I'm a front end developer working in an agency in London for the past 3 years. What I wanted to point out is that learning how to code is a HARD thing so don't be disappointed or give up if you find it hard to learn. It's not only you, but 99% of the people who now code fluently, they once had the same problems like you! Keep coding, keep making this planet a friendlier and smarter place :)

Thank you so much for these words! I’m currently in an intensive software engineering program and I have had so many moments where I’m like, “AM I EVER GOING TO GET THIS?!” One thing I have to do is look back at where I was a couple months ago and see how much I’ve learned. No one learned a language in a few months or even a year. Languages are learned over time because they evolve, which is something I need to remember. It’s so helpful to hear experienced coders like you affirm this, though!! ❤️🙏🏼

Html is like foundation and structure of the house, just the plain basic structure. CSS is like the interior and exterior design. The color. The floor mat, the tiles, the paintings etc. JavaScript is like the doors/ hinges, chairs, water taps, mirrors, lights, switches, clocks etc that add to the function and that you can use and interact with.

Yeah, coding need alot of practices! :))

I absolutely LOVE JavaScript!!! It is just amazing! At first, yeah, it was hard, but then, after I got the basics figured out, everything became soooo COOL! You just have to stick to it and go beyond that point of "uhhh, I got stuck, I do not like this, I do not get this". One thing that I truly hate is Sass. I think the syntax and everything is horrible. And frankly, I just started learning it, but I find it redundant and useless at times. But I guess it is that bump you get at the beginning when you learn something new... Hope that will pass with Sass as well. What do you think about Sass, Chris? Do you use it? Or just go with plain CSS? Thanks for your videos, btw! :)
@hamsteroncoffee
@hamsteroncoffee 6 лет назад
Toporasca, thank you for the advice. Yes, I went on with learning SCSS in the end. It is simpler and resembles CSS, indeed. I totally agree when you say it is more maintainable, because you have all things together (you can share properties and all), you can build your own templates and share them easily between files and so on, however, I still have some doubts about it when it comes to how it is being "translated" into CSS because selectors are overall longer and that makes the CSS file heavier (at least in my opinion)... But then, again, I do not have extensive experience with it, so I may be wrong... Maybe on larger projects, it is more useful than plain CSS and being so maintainable and reusable really weighs more at the end. I still have to perfect my SCSS skills and implement it in more complex projects to see its real power, haha. Anyway, good luck on your journey of learning/ perfecting your dev-skills! :)

I live in a Central American third world country where there aren’t many tech/computer skilled professionals compared to USA, Germany or Japan (less than 2% can afford college education here). I’m a current self taught front end developer student, and I get motivated by seeing all these local businesses like restaurants and stores with no websites, because most people here make their publicity via Facebook or Instagram, and most of it is lame. I feel the need to fulfill the demand of businesses of having a client-attractive website.

Basically it's the same comparison between declarative vs imperative languages, and, this is a general difference, not only for JS. Here, for html/css you only tell the computer WHAT you would like to have and not HOW it should be done (for instance for a tag you just say to the computer that you want a paragraph without specifying how it should be done.). For imperative programming languages such as JS, you need to tell the computer HOW (the exact steps) it should solve a problem. Again, if you would like to have a function rendering a string as a paragraph, then the exact steps need to be specified (draw text a little bit to the right etc.) And exactly this makes it obviously more difficult.

Css isn't technically a markup language - it's a style-sheet language :) Just mentioning that because that might trip someone up with a picky web dev interviewer. Mark up defines "what" a page is and style sheet defines "how it looks". Mark up and style sheets are separate.

I think JS is hard to learn or rather hard to use, because online courses teach you fundamental basics, but often leave out a vast amount of other stuff like array methods, aside from the basic ones. How are you supposed to write JS and work with elements and data if you don't know the "tools" (methods etc.) which are available for use. It is like learning to write your name in Japanese and then trying to write a book with that knowledge. It is not going to work. On top of that JS can be odd sometimes as well as being a true programming language you need to actually use your brain to write it.
@swallowedinthesea11
@swallowedinthesea11 6 лет назад
For me, I experimented. Learned the basics of Python and dabbled in making very basic projects like getting names/ages. Then gradually shifted to building on top of that like by adding if/elif, then when I became comfortable with that, I focused on lists (AKA arrays in JS) then moved onto etc etc. Watching JS conferences helps. If you don't know the methods in arrays, a quick Google search will help. As you continue to dabble, you'll familiarize yourself with what does what which will strengthen your understanding.
@dec23
@dec23 5 лет назад
YES! Also, I can't seem to find good JS teachers. They all teach the basics/fundamentals as you said but never really teach the meat and potatoes and if they do they breeze through it. They show you the basics and expect you to figure out an intense algorithm as you mentioned.
@Monster33336
@Monster33336 5 лет назад
That's what I think too. Many tutorials aren't really digging deep and showing tricks with JS. Just how to assign numbers to values or html ID but never teach you more. The "If else" elements and array methods are also important.

I am having so much trouble learning CSS and manipulating the page versus learning loops, arrays, functions, conditions, flow statements, operators. I guess I have a logical mind but CSS, I don't like CSS. Hey Chris!!! how did you learn CSS? Any recommendations in how I can improve my CSS skills?

I'm trying to get this bloody language inside my brain for literal months after a year break, I first learned it in college and I still have no idea how I passed the subject. I honestly fricking hate it but can't avoid learning, this shit is everywhere. I'm fine with C#, Python, Java, HTML, CSS, I can understand those languages and even play around with those but Javascript somehow for me always hits a damn roadblock. It's frigging maddening how it just doesn't fit my brain and yet I don't wanna quit cuz I'm that stubborn, there's already way too much time on this to just call it quits.

I got the logic, the probleme i have right now with JS is that even if i understund what i need to do in sense of a global problem to solve, but when i go into details and try to manipulate the element i want , i find myslef like : i can't use a loop because it's this knid of element, or, i can't acess to it's attributes because it's not like an array, this is the hardest stuff. i think javascript need time not because logicaly hard, it's just because there many components and caracteristics that we can't handle in a short periode of time.

Javascript is confusing and frustrating. To get input I'll need a read line boiler plate. Having to use a call back function is weird. Wish it was as straightforward like python.

Hi Chris, do I have to keep repeating the code challenges and topics in js ? And Is it good practice when you didn’t know the answer to a coding challenge is you watch a video and understand the concept of that challenge?

So I just started to learn programming. I am currently learning javascript. I plan to do html then css after. Should I do html and css before js? I am about 50% through the course and it is proving to be very difficult to understand.

Javascript is continually evolving with new syntax and the range of uses keeps on increasing every year, compared to many other languages that are declining. Just remember the law: "Any application that can be written in JavaScript, will eventually be written in JavaScript"

uhhh I was same, I did start on khan academy so I had to make some animations and stuff, and use loops, but it takes a while. I am now happy when I can solve a problem myself, but am better with some topics (if else, objects, classes) and worse at other topics (itterations) .... I have been studying since march I think, and still feel like an idiot. Sooo...yes. It's better though, I see that but when I think of all the libraries I have to learn etc. I get overwhelmed

chris please answer this : What is the diff. between angular and react ? Which one of them can last for a long time ?? Is it like after learning JS it becomes easy to understand above technologies ??
@remix2die4
@remix2die4 6 лет назад
Both angular and react are hot. Both will get you jobs. Build the same app using both and figure out which one who prefer and master it. Additionnaly, look at your area to find out which one is the most used, no point learning react if there are no react jobs around you or vice versa. And yes, once you have a solid grasp of the fundamentals, you'll have a deeper understanding and appreciation (or not) of those frameworks.
