One of the most enigmatic and interesting characters in Fallout: New Vegas is bar-none Joshua Graham. But what is it about him that we all find so admirable?

My favorite part about him is if you threaten to just kill the tribe and take the map.The first two reason he stated on why you shouldn't do it involve him tracking down and murdering the player but the third reason is "it's bad for you as a person to hurt others who haven't hurt you and that's the most important reason" 10/10 character

It carries two POWERFUL implications: 1. He says this, no matter your karmic and faction alignment. Even if you're a Legion player at zero karma, Graham believes you can be saved and you can still be a good person. 2. He still says this as the conclusion to his threat. Because whatever punishment he may inflict on you, regardless of whether or not he kills you, it is NOTHING compared to God's judgment.

@@humrH2360s a Latter-day Saint, the points you made, especially the second one, is true to the core of our beliefs as Followers of Christ. We all make mistakes and tend to do both good and evil in the sight of God, and when we see others doing what we know to be bad, the first natural course of action is to judge that person harshly (I'm terrible with this when I'm driving). We must constantly remind ourselves that, despite what someone else may do (Sliver in our Neighbor's Eye), we must constantly be aware of our own thoughts and actions (the 4x4 in our own eye). I'm always bringing myself down because of my own shortcomings, but then I'm reminded that because of my Savior Jesus Christ and His Sacrifice for me and All of God's Children, I can become clean AND perfected by His Purrifying Fire and, Hopefully one day, be Judged of God the Father in a good light. Despite Joshua Graham being a fictional Character, Obsidian has my thanks that they put their own spin on what a Latter-day Saint would be like in a hypothetical, grim-dark-n-goofy post apocalyptic world like Fallout.

As a Christian not from America (I'm Nigerian) Joshua Graham is one of the most well written and developed characters I have seen from western media. Given how the current cultural climate is one where mockery or downright condemnation of Christianity or any sort of religiosity is encouraged in the west due to the weird notion that religion is backwards, it's legit refreshing to see such a character like him be portrayed in a proper Christian light. He had pride, anger, lack of control and bloodlust in him. Ten he fell from grace, endured a great penance for his past crimes, repented and was forgiven by his family and loved ones and now works to atone for his past and potentially learns to be meek (Praus i.e. have strength but control it) It's really amazing how well his character was done and I hope to see more Christian characters like him in fiction.

The story of Joshua Graham must be inspired from the story of the Christians. Joshua is the actual name of Jesus when translated to English (Yeshua). Like Jesus who was killed and was alive but then his followers are persecuted by the Rome, the Caesar's Legion might also follow the same path in the game wherein at some point after trying to kill the followers of Joshua, they will eventually take his philosophies instead, which is what happened to the Christians when instead of losing, because of repaying kindness to their foes, they eventually took over the Roman Empire.

Unlike Bethesda, they are able to write stories and characters that feel so genuine, I would not be surprised if they were based on real events and people. As a Christian man myself, and a fairly troublesome one at that, it is beyond refreshing to see a character like Joshua. Too often are we bombarded by the world's version of Christianity, either one that is truly hateful, or one that is beyond weak and willing to compromise the core of our faith. Thus, for a man both capable of strength and mercy as Joshua, while retaining his own shortcomings, to be portrayed and given such recognition, well.... it is similar to what he said... it is a light in the darkness. His character development and story, as well as our actions in game were truly some of the most memorable parts of New Vegas, and oddly enough were the stories and beliefs I needed to survive High School. And for doing an amazing job at covering his character without the video being an hour long, I will gladly become your 228th sub :)

Capable of strength? He's a failed commander & disgraced general who resorted to the same thing all losers in history resort to when their backs are against the wall; becoming deliriously devoted to religion & faith. When you realize you aren't strong enough to conquer the circumstances of your life, you start praying to weird wizards in the sky for help. Lanius should've just slapped a leash on Graham and paraded him around like a pet, instead of burning him alive and kicking him in the pit.

Something that is not commonly mentioned: Apparently, Joshua Graham while working with Caesar under the name of Legate Malpais, was reported dead five times by NCR Rangers and 1st Recon soldiers. He had a reputation for being unkillable even before he was sentenced to burn to death by Caesar. This doesn't have any relevance over this character as a whole, but i have to say that i find this very interesting because it talks about his unrelenting spirit and will to live. A channel actually analyzing my favourite fallout character through christian lens is so refreshing. In a world where people would stay away from the spiritual aspects of his character from fear of being called "Bible thumper" it's a true blessing to find a gigachad whose able to take the lessons Joshua's journey provides. As a Catholic I always loved Graham even if he is canonically a Mormon which isn't generally well liked within Orthodox/catholic/ other protestant denominations most of the time. However the game doesn't make it obvious what sort of Christian he is. For the longest time I thought he was simply a Christian and it was up to the player to make that determination themselves depending on their background. An orthodox would have probably seen him as orthodox or a catholic would have seen him as catholic etc etc. Anyways all this to say keep up the good work keep up the gains and God Bless brother.

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner! I remember my first time playing through Honest Hearts. I was depressed, alcoholic, and an atheist, even though I grew up in Church. NV is my favorite videogame of all time, I've played it since I was a kid but never played the DLCs (mainly bc as a kid I never had the money to buy them and as I got older I didn't have time) But one drunk night I decided to download the DLCs and play them. I went into the DLC blind not really knowing what to expect and after talking and listening to Joshua Graham, it made me cry. In a weird way, it felt like a dad I never had was telling me exactly what I needed to hear. Years of anger and hate didn't seem to matter anymore. That was 2 years ago and every now and again I'll search for videos like these to see what others have to say about Joshua and its a comfort to see the comments and know I'm not alone. A video game character caused my blind eyes to see and a heart of stone to learn to love and forgive. God Bless whoever takes the time to read this. I love you and God loves you. Our Father, Who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy Will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. About 1 minute 30 into the video and instantly one of the most prolific figures in video games for me is Prophet from the Crysis franchise Especially the opening to C3, the whole speech about "Victory costs. Every time you pay a little more" and "What happens when the world's greatest fighting machine fails" (or something along those lines) Before COVID from middle school and culminating in highschool (I still have it to this day, but I'm working harder towards addressing it) I had huge comprehension issues but really good raw ability (picking up concepts fast if they were phrased right, but I couldn't make a compelling case to prove that according to our rubrics) This tanked me from a high 90s student to almost a mid 60s student, going from potentially getting a STEM or Kinesiology undergrad to taking nearly 3 years to finish highschool because I felt like I could no longer learn and that I didn't know how to even begin to address the issue After about 2 years of slogging through courses online and looking up at the ceiling or blanking out with a knife pressed against my throat chiding myself for being a pussy and not ending it It took a person who I hold in very high regards and random blips of that opening monologue popping into my head to begin putting my shit back together, almost 8 months after graduating highschool and about 6 months of piecing myself back together, I dropped from ~250 pounds to 190 and dropping (hoping to get to 165-175 at some point within the year). I'm doing triathlon-based training (Rucking, running, strength endurance, swimming etc.) And beginning to dial in on academics from a self taught standpoint while I wait for my military application Those words from Prophet live in my head all day, I strive to be able to willing accept those costs when he asks.

It is indeed pretty good from a story, choice, and character standpoint. But everything else is quite average. It’s not the studios fault though as they only had about 15-18 months to develop the game. At release, and even now without mods, it’s a buggy mess. The map is quite empty and lacking in interaction. Games like The Witcher 3 and Skyrim use the 30 Second Design. Meaning that every 30 seconds the player encounters or sees something that keeps them engaged and engrossed in the game. But New Vegas lacks this because the devs lacked time to refine the world space. The combat mechanics are also stiff and were outdated even back in 2010 at release. Don’t get me wrong, I love the game. It’s a great narrative and full of diverse quests and characters. But it’s not the perfect game it’s heralded as. A lot of people that say so use mods to improve their experience. Most console players couldn’t even play or finish it back in the day thanks to the bugs, and apparently it’s still like that today on Gamepass. So keep that in mind! Remember it’s also a 13 year old game. And set aside the hype so you can experience it with normal expectations.

Because a fictional character with a saucy voice can read me morality stories to make me a better person, and he won't ruin the message at the end by asking for money or shagging my significant other when I'm not paying attention.

The storytelling of Obsidian in Fallout: New Vegas easily outstrips that of many other games because Fallout: New Vegas addresses old questions that are timeless and matter to everyone. In the main campaign, there are issues of governance. Is security or freedom more important? Do people like Caesar and Mr. House speak truthfully when they say they only intend a temporary dictatorship until things are more orderly or are they simply power-mad despots? What is more just, to be a pacifist or to crush the wicked for the benefit of everyone? How far does mercy go and where is too much mercy irresponsible? Who is right: the scientists at Big Mountain who want to continue their research endlessly or Dr. Mobius, who seeks to kill them, but is really a kindly old man who seeks to save humanity from endless scientific advancement? Then you've got Fallout 4 which is like: "Are robots people?" Nobody cares about that question. It's not cutting edge, nor is it timeless, and it just doesn't apply to the average person. It's not something anyone thinks about regularly and frankly most people already believe the answer to that question is no. The only person who would consider saying "well if the robot thinks it's a person, it is" is someone who fully subscribes to extreme subjectivist notions and that is not really a majority of people today. Ultimately, we need more storytelling that discusses timeless questions, things that make us think about the issues mankind has always pondered because these are the things that are worthy to be thought about. Storytelling of this sort is truly art and it's what everyone craves today. That's my gamer 2 cents.

your overral point is good but just gonna clear up this part "Who is right: the scientists at Big Mountain who want to continue their research endlessly or Dr. Mobius, who seeks to kill them, but is really a kindly old man who seeks to save humanity from endless scientific advancement?" Dr. Mobius does not want to kill the Think Tank, he purposely trapped them in a sort of loop, hence all their names being related to loops btw, so they would not wonder into the wasteland and cause havoc. Also the way you worded that kinda goes counter to some themes from OWB, which I think is displayed by these lines from the ending slides: "Science is the long steady progression into the future." and "It can be easy to see science as evil, technology unchecked as the source of all ills, all misfortunes." I was gonna type more but I was starting to delve into the themes of OWB so much that I was making a reply longer than your post, but I think that says something about FNV and it's dlc. It just has so much depth to it and thought provoking ideas, that you could go on and on about the questions and implication the game has and easily apply them to other situations.

What makes New Vegas Joshua such a miraculous character and an example of going for a different creative direction than what was originally envisioned for the better is that according to design documents for FO3 Van Buren, he was going to be for a lack of a better term an edgelord who’s very infamy would make other NPC’s be more hostile to you if you have him as a companion. Effectively being the old Joshua we hear about and another character who just wants to raze hell. Considering he’s still remembered after all these years, the change in characterisation from that Joshua to the one we have now was the right call for them to make.

Interesting note about the Sorrows Tribe. In Mormon scripture there is a group of people called the Ammonites who take a vow not to use weapons against their enemies anymore because of their past murderous behavior, a war breaks out and the people of God help to protect those that swore not to fight.

@@Edax_Royeauxthe imprecatory psalms are challenging, to be sure. One way to interpret them is as being honest with God in prayer even about our least admirable emotions. Another is to see them not so much as curses against one's own enemies, but God's, with the understanding that the Venn diagram of those is not necessarily (or even likely) a 1-to-1 correspondence. Prayer for judgment on God's enemies (that is, the continually unrepentant) is, in essence, a part of praying "[God's] will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven".

A better vid came out about this topic 3 days before this vid did but no matter, this is still so well done and keeps discussion around the topic active. Arthur Morgan may be the best protagonist in fiction but Joshua might as well be the best character in fiction, he hasn't only generated emotion, but also beliefs. Thank you for sharing your love through this video with us, in these dark times it's good to see some positivity every once in a while. The thing is, as men, we naturally tend to get drawn towards stoicism. So as we grow up we look up to stoic characters and people who then influence us to become a better version of ourselves, whether that's sooner or later in our life times. For me, it's always been characters/people like masterchief, bruce lee, jackie chan and many others as a late 90s baby
@thisismyyoutubecommentacco6302
Problem is stoicism has been mischaracterized as this idea that all emotion is bad and should never be shown which is just laughably false. No one is expecting a person to be a Vulcan. Stoicism is an understanding that there is a time and place to personally deal with and let out strong emotions, but not at the expense of the mission or task at hand. Men are drawn to this for two reason. 1. Men are often more mission oriented, and thus will gravitate towards an emotional state where they focus on the mission and deal with emotional fallout after the fact. 2. Women often express strong emotions in the moment, and often rely on a man for comfort and to be "the rock" at that moment. Anyone who has been to a funeral has likely seen this first hand, a wife will be crying profusely while a man holds her and comforts her. He is likely having the same level of heightened emotion as her, but he understands that his role in this moment is to be the comforting shoulder for her to cry on, and at a later time, he will deal with his negative emotions, likely on his own. Stoicism is often the best emotional tool for survival, and for men, it's ingrained in us due to our natural role since the dawn of mankind of hunters, builders, and protectors.

Awesome video man. My story is sort of the opposite of yours: I used to be the guy who was ripped and deadlifted double my body weight lol, but now (in my mid 30s), I’ve devolved into a depressed recluse and lost touch with most of my friends over the years. I stopped working out and wake up every day not even wanting to breath anymore. But I recently replayed New Vegas and played Honest Hearts for the very first time. Joshua’s character/story has lit a fire inside of me that I haven’t had in a long time. I feel like a nerd being so into a video game character, but I don’t care. I’ll take it where I can get it.
