I work for a local lawn care company. New builds likely have grub because you're not only creating moist conditions for them, but they've been there since before your house was built, and the builders put sod right on top of clay, which is usually why it takes many years to fully treat. There can be up to three generations of leatherjackets in your lawn.

Very good and clear instructions as always Robby, l use these every year and are very effective, not only for stopping the grass dying but it also stops badgers digging up your lawn looking for the grubs. I’m not sure if you have already, could you do another video on nematodes for chafer grubs? As you know these can be just as bad as leatherjackets, and badgers love these grubs too.

I've just moved house recently, and inherited a lawn with patches of what seems to be heather over a number of areas, both growing and dead (black), and a few hundred dandelions. It's approx 350 m2, so trying to avoid starting from scratch, and would rather try and treat it back to a decent lawn. Don't know how to add a pic, otherwise you could have seen it. Brilliant video Robbie! Do you think perhaps that new builds struggle more with leatherjackets because the soil tends to be poor quality, therefore the young grass plants are stressed by trying to establish in what is essentially barely buried rubble. Stressed plants are more sensitive to leatherjacket damage?

After much research on this i have come to the conclusion and evidence that they are coming with turf. All control has been banned therefore farmers cannot treat their fields with guaranteed results. Ours came with brand new turf, laid on crap compacted clay, unfortunately by the time we figured out why everything died its been a 4 year battle which ended on Friday when the garden got ripped up. Because there is no real treatment the crane fly are breeding and nematodes don't have a big effect, especially when each crane fly lays 300 eggs each. They come back too because you have rubbish wet soggy soil they don't go off to lay somewhere else. It's a never ending cycle and until a new treatment is found it will keep on happening. One thing I do know is they need to bring something to the market ASAP because this is becoming a huge problem, it's got worse since 2016 which coincided with the pesticides ban.

@dannykeem4831
@dannykeem4831 3 года назад
The problem with new builds suffering is I think down to the turf suppliers also not having access to chemicals to kill leather jackets. I have seen many new lawns destroyed by leather jackets. I recently laid a smll 20m extension to a lawn and as I was about to lay the last turf a leather jacket popped its head out so they are coming with new turfs. Worse still is when you turf late summer/early autumn when they have laid their eggs in the turf that you have purchased to lay. Do not really see damage until early spring.

I've got Leatherjackets and Chefur grubs in my new build garden. There's more Chefur grubs than leatherjackets though, horrible things. Been living here nearly 2 years and the grass has already gone patchy in areas, basically lifts up like a carpet. I've given the grass one lot of nematodes in late May, nothing positive seems to have happened yet but we do have an awful lot. I'm going to give the grass another coating in September. I've always noticed poor looking grass on new build properties, i've always thought it had a lot to do with poor drainage/having rubble mixed in with soil etc but i bet most of the damage is from chefur/leatherjackets.

Hi Rob, I had this issue at a previous house,. I was told that the leatherjacket eggs often come in the turf that the big house builders buy in bulk cheaply from farms. Hence you find that many of the houses on any given development suffer from the same issue with leatherjackets.

Another great video! Our lawns are wrecked at the moment, lots of brown/dry/bare patches. I went digging like you did the other day - I found a single leatherjacket, but a LOT of ants... everywhere! So I'm actually going to try Ant nematodes. I'm convinced it's the ants that have been munching on the grass roots. What do you reckon Robbie?

Jonny Jones I’ve found that ants aren’t great fans of liquid iron and Humic acid.... those applications on my lawn have reduced the ants, although not got rid totally. If you get Ant mud mounds in the garden, wash them down with a hose first... don’t mow over them....
@mrjonnyjones
@mrjonnyjones 3 года назад
@@rosscraddock6241 Thanks for the info, the grass isn't really growing either, so I don't need to mow it thankfully! There's a recent post in the UK Lawn Care Group on FB about ants, and another friendly lawn care business owner recommends Ant Stop granules (available on Amazon), which dissolve in water and you apply to the most infested areas. So I'll apply that once I've scarified and aerated in September I think... as well as some Iron/Humic.
@ianhutch101
@ianhutch101 3 года назад
The ants aren't eating the grass, they are making a nest in your lawn, they leave the earth that they excavate in mounds at the exit which blocks out light and the grass dies. I've used ant stop granules in the past. There is no need to water the whole lawn with it, just the entry points to the nest. I also use lawn sand in the summer to green up the lawn, it contains iron sulphate which acidifies the soil which also helps with worm casts in the autumn / winter
@mrjonnyjones
@mrjonnyjones 3 года назад
@@ianhutch101 Thanks for the info Ian, makes sense. My plan is to kill the lawns off anyway and start fresh - the laws haven't been tackled in years. So once I've scarified and gotten rid of most of the dead grass I'll be able to see what they're doing better, target the entry points too.

Really helpful video thanks! My lawn was totally devastated by leather jackets this winter. Every morning there were hundreds over the patio next to the lawn and I was sweeping them up! I applied nematodes as soon as the soil was warm enough in April, they soon stopped being visible in the morning. I did another nematode treatment in May! Following an over-seed and feed my lawn has now recovered thankfully! On repairing some pop-up sprinklers however I found some live ones still!!!! This time of year are they no longer feeding as they move into their next life-cycle or is it just the grass is too strong to do damage? Do you think I should be applying more nematodes or wait until these ones hatch and wait until I see the adult crane flys emerge and lay eggs? I think Ive read thats around September? I can't believe they caused so much damage and want to do everything I can to limit their impact again this winter! Any advice appreciated :)

Hello premiere lawns good video I think I've got this problem... Suddenly my nice lush green grass from last year died of in patches over the winter and now resembles a battlefield. Coincidentally last year I remember seeing a large number of crane fly at ground level at dusk. I guess they were laying eggs. My question ( finally ) lol 😁 is can I reseed at the same time to fix the holes. I mean the nematodes won't like inhibit the germination of the new seed or the like? Thanks in advance 👍

No point now. Your best bet is to try and sweat them out. You do this by really soaking the lawn in the evening. Not just a bit of water, loads Then put a black polyethylene sheet over the top and in the morning brushing all of the leather jackets off the lawn and into the brown bin or well away from the lawn Do that until there are no more
