so golfmates in today's video we try and catch some leather jackets on our golf course but what are leather jackets ? Leather jacket. Leather jacket is the common name for larvae of the flies in the family Tipulidae, flies in this family are also known as 'Crane flies'. Leather jackets are unpopular with gardeners as they can cause damage to lawns but they are a valuable prey item for insectivorous birds.

I used to be involved at a non league football club and we had one of the best non league groundsmen in the country. We had so much trouble with leather jackets not just through eating the roots but from Badgers digging the pitch to get to them. Some mornings you’d go in and the pitch was like a war zone with deep, holes dug all over the pitch, it could take literally hours and hours to repair then the following morning it’d be the same again. We got around that by buying an electric fence....best £1000 we ever spent as it almost stopped that issue overnight. Unfortunately the leather jackets were still there but it cured a serious issue.

Fascinating to see this side of golf explained in more detail. Everyone mainly thinks of green keepers as glorified grass cutters. This video highlights how far that is from the truth. You need to be a complete professional in your field to keep a course in good condition and you’ve a brilliant green keeper there. The unsung hero’s of golf, without their knowledge and commitment we’d be bashing balls around a farmers field! Superb video guys.

I’m really into this. Keep lawns at home and have done this the last two autumns. Only small lawns so nowhere near as many but still back breaking picking them up. Second time used a powerful wet and dry vac which worked in the most part but because of the moisture etc. not as well as I’d have liked. I’m going to come up with something. This practice alone improves the turf no end. Add that to all the other cultural practices performed by the green keeping crews and it amounts to a lot of hard work. Green keepers are the unsung heroes of golf and need to be appreciated. Power to you and your kind Dave👍 and a big👍 to you too Liam for highlighting this in your videos. At least all the Golf Mates now know what goes on.

This is a pet bug-bear of mine when I reach a green and see all the pitch marks that haven't been repaired. I've been told that if you repair a pitch mark the green will recover in 5 days, if not, then it take 5 weeks. If you can get OMP to give us a practical demonstration/advice on a 5W vs Hybrid. I'm 68 and would appreciate his/your advice. Keep up the good work.
