I get tenderness after wearing shoes around the ATFL and inferior peroneal retinaculum. Wearing compression socks has helped with swelling and will try the Ghost shoes while I wait for appointments. Has been off and on since an ankle injury a year ago.
I sprained my ankle 24th ago slipping down stairs. Ice pack 20- 30 mins every 3 hours. Elevate foot above my head, and a gentle bandage & mild compression sock have done wonders. Imo allow for swelling to happen whilst adding comfortable pressure to minimalise it. Always remove when sleeping. Ankle supports are readily available on Amazon & I've ordered mine on next day prime delivery. I know from a bad sprain I had many years ago the strap up ones really help. Plus they're so much easier to get the right support at home above a normal crepe bandage. They're cheap too. I got mine for £5.99 I was advised by the UK Health service advisory line to take ibuprofen. But I only took 2 doses as I've read that they can thin the blood & stall healing. So now only paracetamol strictly as on the packet. In USA I believe it's called Tylenol. Taking too much can really do damage, so imo never take more than they state. Fingers crossed this gets me up & about in a week's time. My sprain was really painful & I could barely walk on it this morning. That said, it's got a lot better throughout the day. All the very best everyone. It's a nasty shock when it unexpectedly happens. Thank goodness I wear classic style Emu boots a lot. I think they strengthened my feet before this happened. They have robust yet lightweight PVA soles. Their ankle support is plyable thin plastic, not cardboard. Plus they.have high welfare standards for their sheep. I'm hoping they've helped keep my ankles & feet in good alignment prior to my littlle mishap lol. My swelling & bruising so far is surprisingly fairly minimal. Yeah it's there but it hasn't got worse & my flexibility is good already.
Thank you !! This was very helpful. Your personality puts me at ease to! Have you ever heard of depression coming on for people with a foot or ankle injury? My ankle break and sprain has made me really down because my entire life stopped. I can’t do anything or accomplish anything. That would be a good video.

I experienced a low level depression too, until I saw another comment about depression due to an ankle injury... I was able to catch it, and focus on improving... being limited on movement, getting out of the house,... was hard.... I am finally in a walking cast for 3 weeks, able to put weight on my foot, after 2 months since my injury... I have a different appreciation for what people have to cope with with an injury that keeps you couch and or homebound!! Thanks for your comment and I hope you are doing better.
@@matthewtaylor6870 thanks so much. My injury was in mid October and I’m happy to say I’m 90 percent back to normal. Just some stiffness and a little weirdness on stairs , but I can do everything now and am living life normally. Hang in there ! It gets better !!!
I really appreciate you doing this - going on almost 6 weeks of a sprain. Still have swelling so can't wear my sneakers, did a boot for 10 days as MD suggested. MD did NOT suggest any PT so I'm treating myself through RU-vid & have a compression wrap. (Side note - I hope you ignore any criticisms. You're doing a great thing with this free content and some people will complain about everything.)

I'm glad I came across this video. Thank you for the helpful information. I had a broken ankle 7 days ago, and the uofmn hospital issued air soft boots with no weight-bearing instructions for 4 weeks. X-rays and CT scans have been done. I was curious why the ankle swelling persists.

I used Icyhot and Tylenol to numb the pain A bit and it kinda helped but I also walked it off toes facing forward and my boots don’t have The things that keeps my arches up but I use bath salts to soothe my feet.
I sprained my ankle 6 days ago and the swelling almost went down but now when I try to walk normally I just can’t, I have this fear that doesn’t let me to try walking normally. Yesterday my foot began to hurt and I could not sleep. I’ve been doing circles in the air and other stretching exercises and I don’t know anymore should I walk normally or rest it more..? I am afraid of all those complications I’ve been reading about 😢

Wow. This is like better than what most doctors have told me. I sprained my ankle playing basketball a March 8th and the first doctor told me it “looked” like I had an Avulsion fracture after my X-rays came back. Then another doctor a few weeks later told me there was actually not fracture (after taking another one) so now I’m just doing physical therapy but my ankle isn’t healing fast enough. It’s healing but I feel like it’s very slow. I’m confused and would wish I knew exactly what it was so that I could know how to attack the problem better.
omg! Sounds like you're telling my story literally. Only difference, I fell down some stairs on March 26 and sprained my right ankle. I was 1st told it may be an emulsion fracture, then no fracture detected. I went from 6 weeks in a medical boot and now I'm in an ankle brace with the laces. I'm still going through therapy and I still have a bit of swelling. I'm just ready for things to get back to normal! Hope you get better soon.
@@DeliciaatHomeI am in the same situation now, and I was just put into the brace with laces. Is your ankle better now and if so, what did you do to heal faster?
Dr, During the night I get terrible pain in my calf to the point if i bend my knee, it hurts badly. When I get up and walk, the pain goes away. Your opinion please. I love your videos
Also calf pain or a muscle tear can be possible, as well stiffness or a contracture. I know its a tough answer, but always get checked out if you are worried!
Noticed Hoka size and fit guide does not have Select Width feature that New Balance has. I think this is a major problem with shoe manufacter's. I always get X-Wide (4E) when New Balance 990's are bought by me. Plus, when I got my Etnies Bike Shoes for my Stamp Pedals for biking, no sight of size and fit guide, just a narrow shoe.

Dear Doctor, i feel helpless. 6 month ago sprained my ankle. In generally, it got better but i still have little swelling and pain on ankle. I cant afford MRI and all doctors say you have nothing. I cant wear shoes or socks as it swells more afterwards. Is there any suggestions i could do?
Sir, I had ankle sprain 4 months back in that is in August , then I took bed rest for 40 days, it got cured and pain decreased after 2 months, and now whenever I do stand or walk for long time more than 2 hours .. it pains ... But today it's swelling and pain on touch.. on lateral ankle again I don't know why... 😢😢

I have grade 3 ankle sprain. How long does it usually takes to put some weight on it? And when it safe to start to walk on it? I can’t put weight on it now but also I’m worried that if I tried too hard and start putting weight and walking on it too early that wouldn’t be good for the healing. It’s not my first time hurt this ankle badly.
Thank you for this video and the wealth of advice! My question is I recently hyperextended my knee and am overcoming a tibial plateau fracture. Meanwhile my tibial medial tendon has been sore and the interior ankle area has been swollen off and on. So what could this be and should I continue the RICE method as treatment going forward?
My only comment about shoes is that the fat soft soles like in Hoka I believe led to my sprain. I have exactly what you show, broken ankle and 2 grade 3 tears. I run 100 mile races so I thought I need lots of cushion, but I need to start healthy more. I am switching to La Sportiva with the harder mid-soles.

Hello Doc. I hope you noticed my Comments right now🥲🥲 I hope i can get some advice from you for my Ankle Injury. Im from Philippines. My injury its started on May 1, 2023 and until now it already July 2024 , but why my injury is still in pain badly 🥲😔😔and sometime swollen.
if you come to Costa Rica someday let me know Doctor, I have an endless problem (pain) since 1.5 year after my peronial tendonitis on my right foot/leg, I had to start using only Asics running shoes, the pain is controlled / depleted. However, there are still small symptoms, in some moments small pain come and go. Regards.
Thanks for your information it was useful and wonderful, 18 months ago I got inversion during a football match however I did an X-Ray but it didn't show anything and the doctor told me that it is not serious go and rest for a few days then slowly start your exercises again after rest I have done after rest when I started doing sport pain started again until it became worse. I have referred back to doctor he told me to do MRI and the following is the result of MRI: 1. Subchondral fracture of dome of talus bone with associated surrounding moderate edema. 2. Mild free fluid in tibiotalar joint space. 3. Sprain of anterior tibiotalar ligament. since that time i have used different medicines under treatment of doctors the front pain is solved but still pain suffers me from the right side and back of ankle some them of doctors say that there is no need for surgery it will be ok in the feature but some says that it wouldn't be back to its normal situation and also no chances of surgical operation. And one thing to be mentioned that there is no instability of ankle I can walk even run but after the muscles becomes starts its pain looking forward for your kind instructions.

OMG I am Shook, I sprained my ankle 6 days ago when I was getting off a bus I just missed a step, I rushed to the er and I was diagnosed with a foot sprain, X-ray didn’t show any fracture but now after 5 days the pain is worse tonight I could not sleep, I was elevating it for the past days and avoiding to walk without crutches I don’t even go out, I’m so afraid cause imwas reading about so many complications 😢 like arthritis which is something there is no cure for. What should I do next? Shall I wait a week more or rush to the doctor and ask for an MRI asap?
Wish I was in Michigan! I was born there but that was a long time ago;)! Love all your videos. I sprained my rt foot in May, and a week ago, fell down some steps and sprained my left foot- ugh. I am wearing hoka shoes, going to start pt again and doing all the necessary stuff. I’m afraid I may have Re-injured my rt foot when I’m trying to see what happens. In between these events I got Covid which is prob why I fell😅!
As a bio major, I was well acquainted with the foot anatomy. I watched bc 9/10s of the video, (and the one before it from you) dealt with anatomy. It is my ankle JOINT that is limited. That is what brought me here, plus the title of the video. I learned why it hurts, which don’t apply to me, but NO exercises to improve mobility. I watched 2 videos and learned nothing. 😢
Sorry I’m unclear, are you supposed to wait to stretch and exercise it for the estimated healing times? So for example if I have a grade 3 injury, wait till after 3 months to try to stretch it? Or should we do it as tolerated sooner?
How about fot plantar fasciitis? My orthopedic doctor said i have plantar fasciitis huhu and this pain is already 3 years i only went to the doctor on the third year of pain and that is only what he said.
I’ve been so frustrated I sprained my ankle and was placed in a medicated Una boot and shoe boot. I took it off too early and reinjured the same ankle again. My Podiatrist asked me to go for MRI I declined at the time because I assumed my ankle would get better. Now I am in another CAM boot(longer than the first one) and going for an MRI. SMH. When I take CAM boot off when I get home from work- I’m ok until I’m off my feet for long period of time- when try walking it’s painful. Any suggestions? Can’t wait to get MRI I hope nothing is bad.
Hi it was an amazing video. Thankyou. I just wanted to ask is it normal to have stiff feet after a week. It doesn't hurt but it swallows when i hang it. And it hurts if I try to move it left to right.

On November 22nd I broke my fibula bone all the way through plus I have an alvusion fraction. I still have some swelling on the inside and outside of my ankle plus my foot has a blue coloring not from bruising - which went away. My feet are two different colors. What is causing this bluish color in my foot? Still pain. Couldn't wear an ankle brace as it caused too much pain across the top middle of my foot. Help.
I fell about 8ft from an indoor rock climbing wall 3 months ago. I still have a lot of ankle pain. Upon falling I landed like a gymnast with both feet flat down. I believe I absorbed the shock up through the inside of my right leg before rolling my ankle inward. The inside of my knee hurt for awhile, but that has healed. My ankle swells up, but I do work on my feet. The one thing I can't figure out is why the inside of my foot hurts equally. The soft spot right at the back inside of my foot. A pinching pain at times. When I dorsiflex my foot I have the most pain that radiates around the outside of my ankle. When injured I had brushing going up the outside of my leg and along the bottom of my foot. No broken bone. I can't afford an MRI so I'm really just hoping this pain subsides soon and I can finally go back to the gym. If you read this far and have any knowledge on what might be going on please comment. Thank you!
My daughter twisted her ankle too yesterday with school falling down miss three flight stairs they took x ray our ankle to her leg 🦵 result of the x-rays broken three different bones now she have cast on ankle leg to her knee she saw the oprd
@@r4lpf I have been weight lifting again since February. Lifting has significantly helped my mobility. I went back to the climbing gym a few days ago. I think my ankle is more capable than I can mentally wrap my head around. I was really nervous climbing and didn't finish climbs because I was afraid I'd miss a grab and fall. I did however flash a three which isn't bad more me because that's where I was when I got injured. I was working on 4s. I did an overhang and when I came down because again I was nervous to continue, I landed first on my injured ankle and then my other. That hurt a bit but it didn't bother me for the whole day. Not sure if that helps. I have decided to continue weight lifting and put off climbing. I think my ankle can handle it just not the impact from falling or jumping down. I will try again come next year.
Can I walk with my boot on or wait 6 weeks to 3 months to put wt on it? I twisted my right ankle on 6/20/22. I have level 3 ligament tear. I have ATFL complete tear. I have been walking a little with my boot on but I use crutches to prevent putting too much wt on it.
Same here Frieda. Mine happened 6/19/22. I have been in a boot to immobilize the ankle x 2 months, keeping it in a flexed position in order to allow the tendon to heal, not loosely. Today, my pain is better in the boot. Outside the boot, my ankle is still painful and super instable, all I can do is limp. Pretty worried about this. Im hoping after this next month the ankle mobility and stability will improve. I'd love to get your input on how you continue to heal. Wishing you a healthy, uncomplicated healing journey!
@@Mari-oq6xf Dude could you please advice me what should I do Actually about a month ago I sprained my ankle and had some injuries in atfl ligament But slowly within 1 weak my pain was almost healed But the swelling is being constant it's not decreasing with time , also I cant walk on my toes u think I still have some unhealed part of ligament So dude ? Is it ok to walk ? Or should I immobilize my ankle ? Or any another advice from your side ? It'll be a great help for me And ignore my English I know it's bad
@@pranjaljyoti Hi. I'm sorry you're dealing with this too. It's been 6 months since my ankle tendon tears. Today I am walking in normal shoes with some pain here and there and some ankle instability. I walked in a boot x 3 months. Then switched to an ankle brace. At nighttime, I did ankle flexion/extension exercises. Eat well!! Take multivitamins to assist in healing well. Someone with the same injuries told me it took them 1 year to get 90% better. Good luck with your healing journey!
Is it normal to have no dorsiflexion after 1 month of ankle sprain? I couldn't bear weight for a couple weeks, and couldn't walk at all for 2.5 weeks. I'm walking now, but with a heavy limp. It feels like something is physically in front and top of the ankle at joint not letting me bend. It's still swollen around the ankle, and a lot of the spots on the foot and even above the ankle are still tender. The dorsiflexion is the one thing that is not progressing for me. Other things were gradually getting better every day or two. I'm doing regular rehab with exercising, massaging, and all that. X rays showed no fractures.
It could be swollen, and sometimes an injury to the intermediate dorsal cutaneous nerve may be the issue. 99.9% of the time this gets better with good support and decrease in inflammation. Just make sure no further missed in jury ❤️😊🙏
What ankle grade sprain do I have if it still feels weak after 6 months and it never bruised when I first got it?I can use it normal until I turn it really far which is used for skateboarding

I've recently undergone an atfl reconstruction and after 2 months, i am experiencing pain around the lateral malleolus area. Maybe you know the cause of this. I just wanted to know if this is just part of the healing process or this is something i need to be concerned of. I am currently seeing my physical therapist. The pain I'm talking about is giving me a hard time since it is coming up when i do certain movements. I hope you notice my comment. Thanks a lot.
@@HG-xv8eg i am okay now, far different from before. maybe the pain i was experiencing was really part of the healing process. though sometimes i do still feel very tolerable pains when i don't move my foot for hours.

Hello Dr. Tom, i had a grade 3 sprain a year ago and i still have pain in my ankle. I have done mri and it only suggested minimal joint effusion. I have been going to see my orthopedic doctor but all the physio is not helping. I can't dorsiflex my ankle. What do think it might be the problem
this video has been great and i feel like ive learnt a lot. Ive just got one question. I sprained my ankle badly back in November and have sort of been trying to rush back to sport since but for the last month I have decided to take the time to rest it. my swelling has gone down however, Im a student and ive just landed a job as a waitor in which i’ll have to be on my feet for several hours a day, i need the money so i kind of have to take the job. How badly will this affect my progress with my ankle and how much longer could healing take?
Bro I'd recommend doing 0 sports and just do some swimming to strengthen the ankle. Also keep doing stretches everyday and maybe get some ankle support trainers
Hello I love your videos thank you. I sprained my ankle three weeks ago. The MRI shows I have small foci of bone contusion/microtrbecular injuries affecting the distal and plantar aspect of the cuboid and the media plantar aspect of the talar Head accompanied by a discrete fracture plane or fracture deformity. Moderately large joint efusion without synovitis. High-grade near complete full thickness ATFL tear with some preserved remnant superior fibers Mild tenosynovitis of the medial flexor compartment. My question is is this really bad how long do I need to rest my foot or my ankle? When do I need to start physical therapy?

I saw my doctor 4 weeks ago for a sprained ankle. I have never had pain from walking around the house. But too much with a shoe hitting the ankle, and it begins to hurt plus without an ace bandage on, it is really unstable. One wrong move and it hurts. Could my sprain have been worse than I thought? Or did I re-injure it by not wearing an ace bandage on it? I see my doctor in a couple of days but I am stressed out as I had been doing cardio exercises daily before this happened and now just trying to do 15 minutes is difficult. 😞
I can't understand.i have injur when playing.now pain is gone but still swelling is there at ankle..please suggest me for that..i injured before 25 days
Dr thinks partial tear of the ligament of the left ankle . I’m 21 days in a boot wrapping my left foot . I’m still icing it on and off . Yes, still bruised but better looking . When can I perform exercises. Like you shown in the video? My doctor says keep it at 90 degrees & keep off it as much as possible. My X-rays did not show anything. My next visit is in 7 days . I guess I’m heading in the right direction
Hi. I hope you notice this Doc. I have an ankle sprain on May 2022. Then in August 2023, it came back. Right now I am still having trouble with my ankle, it swollen 4 days ago. It has always been like this, it came back after it's healed.
