Why does sex exist? You might think the obvious answer is “reproduction” but there are plenty of organisms on Earth that don’t require sex to reproduce. And the more that scientists examined sex, they more they realized that it’s an expensive and inefficient way to get your genes to the next generation. The true purpose of sex is actually one of the longest-standing mysteries in evolutionary biology. But scientists are closer than ever to finding the answer. Here’s what we know about the evolutionary enigma of sex.

In ancient history, bad vision would generally come late in life, but if you were young and had bad vision, you would be more likely to die younger and not pass your bad eyesight on. As humans got more advanced and developed more tools and created a supportive society structure, the pressures to not have bad eyesight start to go away. Now, if your eyesight is pretty bad (say extremely nearsighted), you have the chance to have glasses or surgeries to help correct it. Many of the effects of being nearsighted are minimized or negated. Screens and cameras can take things that are far away and not visible and make it close enough to be focused on. There's also help we build in to our societies for people with poor eyesight, such as audio cues or tactile clues. Something detrimental is not detrimental enough to prevent it from continuing on in other generations.

Basically, colder and darker regions on the planet. But people wouldn't necessarily turn *more* white if they move from a warm climate to a cold because we keep ourselves more comfortable with our tools. Sun/uv lamps, vitamin supplements, even tanning salons, would start to negate the lack of sun from the environment. In other words, the environmental pressure of cold climates not having as much sun is more or less negated by our technology

One good way to think of nature and evolution is that it's not necessarily survival of the "fittest" but instead it's survival of the "good enough." That's why you don't need a "winning hand" of genes, just a set that allows you to survive long enough to reproduce, even if you aren't perfect.

@nopenope4502
@nopenope4502 2 года назад
@@purpleemerald5299 I'm on my period right now and the pain - We need so much pain, stress and in some cases risk of death just to have the ABILITY to even be able to have kids in the first place, let alone go through the process of actually being pregnant and giving birth. I repeat my statement of life's not fair. Our success is... artificial. Take Chernobyl, for example. Nature is THRIVING over there, in a place where we cannot. In Chernobyl, it was a case of adapt genetically, or... die. Humans can adapt artificially, using technology to protect us (Like the radiation suits people visiting Chernobyl have to wear), but because of that we can't adapt very well physically anymore. Nature, however, can, because it doesn't have radiation suits to protect it. Plants and animals that had natural resistance to radiation are doing excellently, passing on genes and breeding generations of radiation-resistant creatures, whereas the ones that didn't probably died and didn't have chance to reproduce. I was having this conversation with my family on a 3-hour car journey in the middle of the night yesterday, and we all agreed that humankind is going to die out within the next 500 years, whether it's a war, climate change, a pandemic, a nuclear disaster, or some unpredicted event (Like Yellowstone erupting, though I'm pretty sure that's not due for thousands of years. If it does erupt, there'll be a mass extinction for sure.). It might even be a combination of multiple. Knowing humans, we'll have caused our own downfall in some shape or form. I'm rambling now so I should post this and go watch a different science video before I start spiralling. I hope your current week is better than mine has been, and that if you are someone who gets periods yours are not too heavy or painful.

My mom gave me the talk when I started puberty, but I always had a decent idea of how babies start out since I was very small. I'm adopted, and my mom wanted me to never feel like it was hidden from me, so she'd frequently tell me, "You're not from my belly, but that doesn't change how much I love you." I basically knew that babies were in "bellies", and that they did not come from supernatural means xd

This concept of "the talk" is really interesting to me. I come from The Netherlands and this isn't really a thing here. At least, not in mildly progressive families. We just pick up random stuff from lessons in school, friends and family until we have collected enough snippets of information to understand how it works and what it is. I think it works like that because people are generally just open about it, even to kids. At least, my family and my friends' family was.

I live in finland and i found "the talk" as a weird concept too because i never had it and it just seems so awkward for your parents to explain what sex is to you. Honestly i have no idea where i first learned it, i guess i was just curious as kids are and like you i got snippets of information here and there until i got a general idea what it was and then fully understood it during middle schools sex ed.

I find that concept weird too. I think "The Talk" is mostly an American thing. In my culture (perhaps even the whole country), we also just pick up random stuff from here and there until we have the whole picture. It's not that it's taboo to talk about it, it's just not a thing

OK, seriously for a minute. I was talking with a young (21 yo) man about sex. He initiated the conversation. I soon discovered that he really knew very little about it. Sure, he had a pretty good idea of the basic mechanics and was more or less successful twice, but that was it. He knew very little about venereal diseases, effective contraception (even how to use a condom correctly), the emotional aspects of sex for both partners, etc. He had not been vaccinated against HPV. Well, the list could go on, but you get the point. There's more to "the talk" than anatomy. And there's a lot to becoming a good man that dad will always be proud of.

Some kids aren't as lucky with their parents as you were. There are families who don't *really* communicate with each other. Some parents have no clue how to talk about it because of their experiences or their own parents, so they don't know what "normal" is regarding sex. Some parents are conservative. Some parents come from a culture where sex is a touchier subject. Some parents just do the talk wrong because of false beliefs. In my case, my parents have always pretended sex doesn't exist. Despite being relatively open, feelings, affection, love and sex are things we never discuss. I don't know if it's because of culture, but they rarely show affection, whether physically or verbally (even as an adult I cringe when I hear someone say "I love you" to their parents). Do you honestly think "the talk" is an easy thing for parents who are like this?

Funfact: Very important genes are "conserved" in the DNA, meaning they are located very close to each other on the chromosome. When the genes are "shuffled" in Meiosis, they will be more likely to stay together and the baby will have all the basic functions to survive. So the shuffling is a lot safer for organims than is sounds.

If you have a kid that's 18 years of your life and 3/4 of your allowance to feed, clothe, and shelter that kid; and you BETTER take care of your RESPONSIBILITIES!! I knew the "cost" of sex. She implied it was 2 minutes = 18 years of your life (LOL?). When you look at sex like that you tend to make better, more informed decisions. I am 43 with no kids, never married. I also think that the existence of sexual dimorphism in more complex species like mammals or birds allows one species to focus on survival while the other can reproduce. Women being physically weaker than men makes them "more valuable" biologically. Testosterone is what causes muscle mass to develop easily, and too much of it makes women infertile. Human women have a hard enough time giving birth as it is, so you don't bother. The propagation of species is more important than muscle mass, women are strong enough to survive on their own anyway, and if men die sperm is cheap and donors are willing. Same with peafowl. Peahens are beautiful in their own right, but peacocks look like a giant bullseye in the wild. If they survive existing to adulthood, they might be worthy of female attention. I know that's a *really* abrasive way of looking at it, but women are just DNA trying to clone itself too, so that's reality.

My father never had the talk with me. I don’t think he could have. I was in high school and still being ordered to leave the room when nudity was in a film or TV scene. Needless to say, I was on my own.

Something I don't see come up in these topics is "Why do humans seemingly find more pleasure in sex than other species do?" My guess is that we would have been too caught up in intellectual curiosities to give proper attention to reproduction.

Is it just me, or did anyone else just kinda automatically understand what sex is? Like, I don't remember any time someone explained it to me, whether in school or by my parents, where I thought it was something I didn't already know. It sorta just was ingrained in my brain from the start, ig... 🤷🏼‍♀️
