Why is Shohei Ohtani the first two-way player in a hundred years!? | Quick Question

Shohei Ohtani is making hitting and pitching look easy. So why doesn’t it happen more often? Not since Babe Ruth have we seen a two-way player dominate baseball like this. What has allowed Shohei Ohtani to blow up like this while everyone else just specialized in one?

@@hogujak Not really. The video says as much - elite two way talent is RARE, but it’s not UNIQUE to Ohtani. It’s just specialization forces players to play only one position after they become pro. Once you become a professional athlete, your body is an economic asset and the benefits of leveraging two way talent on the field is outweighed by increase to wear and tear and injury. And that’s for not only the teams but the player (and his/her agent and family, who are all economically dependent on the long term success of the athlete).

He is just simply amazing! He is literally saving and carrying baseball on his own shoulders. I do love baseball but lost interest about a decade ago. But because of Shohei Ohtani, I'm back and loving it even more. He's bringing in new fans and fans who don't even watch baseball. And screw SAS! Shohei is the American dream. We should all be very proud of him. He came to America to live out his dream at just 23 years old. He left his family and culture. Give him a break. We all have parents and grandparents who immigrated from another country and who cares if English wasn't their first language. It takes time to learn a second language. Not that it matters anyway. Shohei will learn and speak English in no time. But in the meantime, he's doing what he loves best and that's playing baseball and boy oh boy is he amazing at it! And when we can see smiles and excitement on the faces of little kids and grown ups alike because they love what triple-threat "Sho-time" is bringing to the plate... Then that's all that matters. Who cares if he doesn't speak English. He's today's primetime TV! And he's so kind and humble too. We're witnessing a legendary GOAT in the making indeed! Enjoy this astronomical once-in-a-legend unicorn phenom while you can. He's not the next Babe Ruth. He's the first and original Shohei Otani! HE IS THE BAR!

This was well-done as a presentation of the two-way player situation and Ohtani's stardom. I'd like to see more players get a chance to excel at both pitching and hitting, but at the same time we need to emphasize that Ohtani IS different. He's high caliber in both roles, plus he's got elite speed on the bases and has a great baseball IQ. Oh, and let's not forget his personality. He seems dedicated but fun, humble yet self-confident. And there's a boyish charm or likability to him that I think makes him even more of an attraction when he plays. He's got presence, not just the swagger of a self-centered athlete but something more winning in his personality that increases the likability factor.

You're not the only one, I started appreciating and understanding baseball because of Anime series like Big Wind Up and Ace of Diamond. I didn't even know so many Japanese starting pitchers were in the MLB until Ohtani's rookie year.

Ohtani's different. He's enormously special. He's essentially the Stephen Curry of baseball -- he's going to change the game, make history, and create a new meta. There will be more and more players trying to be the next Ohtani in a few years after his success, similar to how many basketball players shoot 3s after Curry (yet none approaching his greatness), but to do so at an ultra-elite level like Ohtani will be rare. He's the Angels best pitcher and hitter simultaneously, while being an amazing runner. It's great time to be alive to see him play.

As a Japanese, I can't emphasize too much how important decisions of Nippon Ham Fighters and LA Angels were both of which believed Ohtani's potential and took great risk. Therefore I also believe we can see a few other capable two-way players in coming dacades if GMs in MLB keep open minded and dare to take risk. PS: As a JP, I haven't know about legacy of two-way players in black league until now... It's kinda hidden gem, isn't it?

Watching the Koshien tournament, I see a lot of ace pitchers who are great hitters as well and some even granted the position of 4-hole. It's quite a waste that they had to focus on either pitching or batting if they wanna go pro. Ohtani being insanely good as a two-way player is a breakthrough. I think it might actually encourage more players in the future to follow this kind of path.

I remember when I happened to see him for the first time when he was in the second year of high school. He wasn't famous yet. He was throwing like 90-91. I thought he was talented but I didn't find him special. Then I saw him hit double to the opposite field. That wasn't a special double at all, but his swing somehow thrilled me. I felt something and thought he might be able to become a good hitter. I really remember that feeling. (He turned out to be 100 billion times more talented than I thought at that time lol)

If you're a baseball fan and know something of the history - if you could travel in time and watch one player for a season that would probably be Babe Ruth right? Consider this: as a full time pitcher Ruth had outstanding numbers but it was a different era that really doesn't compare with the modern era where the average quality of both hitters and pitchers is far beyond what it was in the 1920's. Ruth's best season was 14 home runs as a pitcher according to Wikipedia - he didn't start blowing away the records until he became a full-time hitter with the Yankees. Now granted Ohtani has the advantage of hitting as a designated hitter while being a pitcher - an option Ruth did not have - but Ohtani is currently on pace to beat Ruth's home run record set as a full-time hitter, while maintaining a full-time spot in the pitching rotation - something that has never been done in baseball history. In addition, with the exclusion of one terrible inning in New York he would have a sub-3.00 era this season with 11k's/9 innings. If I had to pick only one player for one season to watch in the history of baseball it would be this player and the time would be now - Shohei Ohtani.

He’s built different. Not many hitters can hit 46 bombs. Not many pitchers can throw 101mph heat and rack up double digit Ks consistently. No one can do both, but it’ll be great to see more in the future, but I have a feeling that it might take a few decades to see another one like him.
