Why is Sonic Superstars a “Flop”?

Couldn’t agree more here. Releasing a Sonic game near the same time Mario Wonder and Spider-Man 2 hit shelves wasn’t really a smart move. I was originally going to buy Superstars, but I just felt like Spider-Man 2 was more with the money. I didn’t pick up superstars until a few months later when I saw it on sale for a cheap price.

I do agree with a lot of points you made, but I should mention a few things you should consider looking into more. First off Superstars was revealed 2 weeks before Mario Wonder, did you think SEGA was aware of that? And the release date was likely planned ahead of time without knowing Mario Wonder's existence and while they could’ve delayed it a month ahead it’s probably too hard of a task to handle knowing that shareholders can be pretty stingy if their releases get delayed. I don’t think Arzest is a bad Studio even with their catalog, the issue is that they are overly influenced which can hinder their releases, Balan wasn’t bad because of Arzest themselves, it was bad because it had a bad director Yuji Naka, Arzest needs better direction and I blame Iizuka in a couple of aspects for Superstars direction, especially with the story because there are still details that wasn’t publicly shown yet. Superstars being a 2.5D game isn’t bad at all if you know how to take advantage of it, there’s a reason why they ditched it over a hand-drawn style, yes it was likely budget reasons why they didn’t go with the 2D art style, but more specifically a pixel style, Sonic is a kids franchise and one of their main demographic’s, it’s very likely kids are gonna see something as Mania and brush it off because they see pixel games nothing but old news, it was the right call to choose whatever over pixel style but I do wish they took more advantage of it being 2.5D because generations classic levels shows that. I do see potential in Superstars if they give it a follow-up to Iron out and improve areas. - Remove the co-op (keep it 2P at least) - have a more consistent OST (get Jun to pick up that damn guitar) - give it a unique style before they suffer NSMB syndrome - give a proper online mode that isn't whatever the hell Superstars battle mode is, just be Mania’s with online support. - have a justifiable price of $40-$20 Funny enough I chose Superstars over Wonder, mostly because at the time I didn’t have a switch but also I find Wonder and 2D Mario in general to be pretty basic and boring and Wonder kind of had to do the bare minimum to stand out from the NSMB series while having elements that left me scratching my head.

I think Sega used the " hey the other platforms should pick up the slack" mindset which is stupid. They can't be so dumb to not realize that Nintendo gamers are their biggest Sonic supporters and even those outside of the average Nintendo gamer probably own a Nintendo device and will purchase the new big Nintendo game(especially Mario) over Sonic. They need to pick a lane. Either 2-3 months before a major Nintendo/Mario game launches or 2-3 months after.

I heard 3 things about this game that made me not want to buy it 1: They botched the Super Forms for everyone except Sonic and the new lizard/dragon girl who renders 3 out of the 4 other characters useless once she's unlocked 2: Boss battles are extremely slow and long, requiring a lot of waiting and one or two mistakes in this long waiting game forces you to start over 3: The Cardinal Sin of a boring and mediocre soundtrack. Sonic *ALWAYS* puts out banger soundtracks and I listened to them. Elevator music for games. Why does Sega, on its own, without 3rd party help, struggle with making their own freaking character and their games, Good? The heads in that company need to be removed. They clearly don't know what they're doing.

I really do think 3d graphics could work for 2d sonic, but it just hasn’t been done well yet. The style superstars has is almost there, and if it was on a game closer in quality to mania I don’t think there would be nearly as many complaints

I've only played one "modern" 2D Sonic game, and that was Sonic Generations. And the reason that worked was because of the fantastic music, stunning graphics, the option of playing 3D or 2D (I actually like 3D better in that game and I'm a Genesis girl), and lastly, watch the camera work in 2D for Generations. It zooms in, zooms out, goes sideways...it's almost 3D itself but keeps the 2D elements. Sonic Superstars has none of that; you can't have a "modern" 2D Sonic game without also using those camera techniques and great music. Mania got away with not doing it because it was retro. Sega just got butt-hurt because a pile of fans did it better, and that's why there's no Mania 2. Just wasteful hubris.

Bro I totally agree with you. I thought this game was average but was disappointed by the outcome. If this is out Sega and sonic team keep making games with limited quality, Some might abandon the blue hog boi. Improve, Sega.

Another great video! Sonic has been in such a weird place lately with some of the recent releases. Here's to hoping that the next game has some more love put into it.

I would have bought it day 1, had it not tack on the Multiplayer elements, and not look so generic.

Pinball Carnival music is actually made by Rintaro Soma, not by Jun Senoue. When I first heard the act.1 song, I tought it was perhaps by Tee Lopes, since it had that similar style + a lot of people have said it has Studiopolis Zone vibe. It's interesting that you felt let down by Pinball Carnivals music, since it is one of the better and universal praise received songs in the game and doesn't try to replicate the Mega Drives sound.

If Sega wasn’t being to corporate it would’ve sold well. This reminds me of the time my friends birthday came up and I gave him Sonic Mania with a few comics of mine He told me he just bought Superstars and he did say he had a really fun time with the game. He also said the multiplayer was ok I just wished it wasn’t as chaotic with two player one moment he ran so fast to the point where the second player couldn’t catch up and had a cooldown until he can come back. He even said he was more disappointed when only one player could turn super and while the final boss was alright he at least said it was a fun game but could’ve been better. Now me and my friend are huge sonic fans and when you have that reception from some game that’s not worth $60 it’s sicking of how Sega is treating there consumers and even there developers not giving the amount of time and money they need to work on the game. But then again my uncle bought Sonic Frontiers which was also $60 but he managed to get me it during Christmas at a low price. And while glitches and bugs were present in the game I at least managed to get through it on the bright side at least the glitches weren’t 06 level. I don’t mind Sonic getting the recognition he’s getting but at the same time I just wish Sega would just Live and Learn and just make games out of love again like they did with Mania or even The advance trilogy.

J'ai toujours préféré sonic à mario. Mais il faut être réaliste sonic superstar ne vaut pas mario wonder. Sonic superstar vaut un 14/20 alors que mario wonder un bon 18/20. Sonic mania étais le dernier bon jeu sonic 2d. Je ne comprends pas pourquoi ils ont pas fait un sonic mania 2. Le problème avec superstars sonic semble lourd et moins rapide. Les boss sont une horreur. Certains trop long et difficile à battre. Pourquoi ne pas avoir fait une map pour faire avancer sonic sur une carte pour avancer dans les niveaux à la manière de Wonder. Je pense que sonic mania 2 avec pleins de nouveaux stages et musiques auraient eu plus d'impact et sega aurait fait plus de ventes. Pauvre sonic 😢

should've been around 20 to 25 max and let's not forgot the fact they snuck Epic Online Service on the PC release at launch without even mentioning it that secretly installed behind your back, and yeah, the game is pretty mediocre to be honest, the level design itself wasn't that good on the base game, Trip's campaign becomes more and more tedious, and the last two boss, Fang and Dragon, are the worst bosses in Sonic history, so yeah, a lot of stuff was against, but to be honest, Fans make better 2D games than most people SEGA pick outside of Whitehead and crew

Why do you think pinball carnivals music is bad, not all of the ost in superstars is that bad. Besides pinball carnival zone act 1 music isn't even that awful to listen to.

I've hacked my switch and I can download any game I want for free...however I have yet to download this...thats literally how picky I have got as their are so many solid games out their I can enjoy...that being said I haven't downloaded Mario Wonder yet coz that also looks stupid lol.
