This video is very well done. I enjoyed every minute of it. I too grew up in a home with an Atari 2600, but when my older brother bought the NES Super Mario Bros was just mind blowing. When I wasn't playing Super Mario, I was thinking about it or drawing pictures of the characters and the game environment. I had trouble making it beyond World 1-3 in my first play throughs. Discovering what was beyond that level and realizing you could enter some tunnels to access coin-filled bonus rooms just made it feel so new and the world feel so expansive. It's amazing to think how much they made with a so little data, comparatively. Thanks for this video and for sharing your insight on a great video game!

Super Mario Brothers was the start of the better 8-bit games through the Nintendo NES. I was a definite improvement over Atari and other 8-bit systems with the blocky characters. I see what Mario did for Nintendo consoles is the same as what Sonic did for Sega consoles. Both games are iconic for the gaming possibilities. The next greatest leap was from 8-bit to 16-bit it definitely made the wonder grow.

People really dont appreciate how much old games used to have to teach you. Today designers can take for granted certain things because we have all been "trained" by games like Pitfall, Super Mario, Doom, StarCraft and Civilization. If Developers dropped a game like Stellaris on gamers who had never played Civilization and Masters Of Orion it would never sell. At the same time, no one, and I mean no one, does this better than Nintendo. Super Mario Sunshine scaled up the same way with teaching you the unique water mechanics. Donkey Kong Country brings in each of its challenges and rewards slowly but you do almost everything in Jungle Hijinx. The "tutorial that doesnt feel like a tutorial" is something Nintendo does better than any one else.

My opinion has always been that there's no such thing as a perfect game, and that includes Super Mario Bros. But that doesn't mean I don't love the hell out of it and consider it an all-time classic. You described it perfectly as a comfort game. I can always come back to one of the NES Mario games whenever I'm frustrated at something else going on in my life and just want to chill out. To give an example of one thing SMB could've improved, it's the air control when jumping. Jumping feels a bit stiff in SMB because you're more locked in and committed to a set speed when jumping. While that doesn't in any way ruin the game, SMB3's improved air controls feel significantly better. That being said, of course it was a massive milestone in video game history and changed gaming forever, so any minor gripes I have with the game are only in retrospect. The fact that SMB is as excellent as it is for a game that was so ambitious for its time cements it as a true masterpiece.
