A word about TikTok - a friend of mine is Hong Kong Chinese Heritage. She told me recently that TikTok in China is totally different to the one we see (not me!) in The West. In China its content is for EDUCATIONAL purposes. In the West it's for ENTERATINMENT -or as I think of it - wasting time looking at trivial crap ! Another example of China outwitting the West ?

"Tackling disinformation and misinformation will be an integral element of the BBC News Urdu content". I wonder whether whoever released that press statement did it with a straight face and, the question has to be asked, why would the BBC make such an exception for the its Urdu content? The BBC can reach vast numbers of people who speak Urdu, and probably many of those only Urdu, in the UK, by the way. The BBC are far more concerned to get their message across to them, particularly in the run-up to an election, than they are to anyone living in Pakistan, or anywhere else where Urdu is spoken. Anyway, Tick Tock is run by the Communist Party of China and we should know how they treat people of the same religion as the majority of Urdu speakers over there. Ever heard of the Uyghurs? I reckon CJ, who usually does a brilliant job and to whom I am grateful for giving me the confidence to cancel my TV licence quite some time ago now, may have got hold of the wrong end of the stick here.

In Kosovo the BBC has a radio station, no adverts. It plays a mixture of western and Kosovan/Albanian music. Now if you look on the BBC webpages, you will see that the BBC has 128 radio stations around the world. Just type in BBC FM Stations Around the World into google. These are supposedly for the BBC world service, but they are FM stations which means the BBC has paid money for the FM frequency and obviously has broadcast equipment in each of those 128 countries. As I said before, the radio station in Kosov plays a mixture of western and local music, it doesn't as far as I know do any world service programs (it is in Albanian, so it may) and I suspect that this is the same for all the 128 BBC radio stations around the world. Either way, it must cost a fortune for this and what for?

I put the BBC news channel on as I'm paid for the month of January, this was 7:30 am the same news was repeated through out the day, the only change was the presenters reading the same news. I often think now when the news presenter say's " This is BBC news in the UK and around the world"!! Do the people around the world have to pay a tv licence ? I don't think so. The BBC has FM radio stations in about 128 countries. To do this is must have a licensed frequency in each country which will cost them a fair amount and the broadcasting equipment in each country. I can tell you for one that they have a radio station in Kosovo and it plays a mixture of western and local music and has DJs....with no adverts. So not only do they need to pay for the frequency licence, broadcast equipment but also the DJs. On top of that, they will need to be a company in each of these countries.

Not a hard question to answer. BBC is the primary overseas propaganda 😮arm of the British Government, and Urdu is the national language of Pakistan, a nuclear power with over 3 times the population of UK. It is a strategically important nation. So although I consider British and Western foreign policy largely hypocritical, I can certainly understand why the BBC would be investing in Urdu Tik Tok outreach. Whether that money would be better spent elsewhere is a different debate.

BBC World Service and foreign language services are only partially funded by the licence fee on account that they may use BBC content. Otherwise, it is mostly funded by advertising and by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, which uses it to push its message where it wants it to be. If BBC Persian winds up the Iranian government, then that is not really a bad thing.

@brianfitzell1664

What part is funded? How much? Why should an older person on a basic state pension be expected in any way to fund a UK perspective on voting in Pakistan? But then if the Urdu speaker is a UK resident this appears to condone a form of apartheid. If I moved to France I should not expect the BBC to excuse me for not learning French. Please don’t give me the baloney about multiculturalism, that’s an excuse for demeaning local cultures. These are supposedly protected under an UN charter. Believing that now appears to show naïveté.

The government believes that the transfer of funding to the licence fee will increase the BBC’s ability to increase scope for sensible efficiencies and economies, and avoid duplication across the whole of the BBC family. It will also help create a more sustainable future for the World Service. This will also benefit licence fee payers, who will continue to have access to the World Service. Why this is funded by licence payers, whilst putting out a view that is a uk government one, is it to give it more credibility ?
