Idaho, land of vast rivers, snow capped mountains, and the potato. No matter how many cool videos we make of epic wilderness adventures, Idaho will always be be known for that boring lump of starch. The first potato planted in the gem state was by Reverend Henry Spaulding in 1847. Now over 170 years later, whenever people think of Idaho the first thing they think of is the potato. Real cool, Montana gets Big Sky and fly fishing and we get potatoes. Maybe I’m being too hard on the spud. Maybe it’s the coolest vegetable on planet earth. Honestly I don’t know much about the potato. So to learn more we headed to the Potato Museum in Blackfoot Idaho.

I thought the potato museum would be a lark. But that little brown lump has had quite the journey through the ages and we got lost diving deep into Idaho’s rich agricultural history. Maybe all the potato needs is a modern spokesperson to update it’s branding and make it cool in the 21st century.

Potato salad 12. Boiled potato 13. Jacket potato 14. Dauphinoise 15. Baked potato 16. Scalloped potato 17. Croquetas 18. Stuffed potato 19. Half baked potato with filling 20. Potato mix There's so much more, this to me gives the potato the #1 spot for versatility and can feed people for millennia. I have a tattoo of a potato because of how amazing they are.

Is it just coincidence that in a state that is known world wide for it's potato crop that I find it hard to purchase quality bakers (Russets) in our local Idaho grocery stores. Please tell me it is just my poor shopping skills and not a global conspiracy to ship the biggest and best taters to other places like Maryland does with it's Jumbo blue crabs. Occasionally a superior tater is found at Albertsons but not often enough haha.

I remember working at Cottonwood Grille in Boise back in the day. We would get people from all over the world wanting a baked potato, and we didn't have them! People would show up and ask for a baked potato and I would have to say "we don't have baked potatoes." Guests would think they were in the Twilight Zone.

@@JonConti Haha that is funny, like going to Texas and you can't find a steakhouse. We are not far from the good ole Cottonwood Grille. IDAHO POTATOE IS NO LONGER THE POTATATO OF THE1940s& 1950s they were flat shaped one &half inch - two inch thick and seven, eight inches long ! And covered in a thick rough textured skin cross hatched with dark lines diagonally ! And they like bricks could be stacked like bricks for display and selection in on vegetable stand! BAKED THE POTATOE WAS A DRY TEXTURE AND HAD AGREAT DISTINGUSHER FLAVOR NOT SHARED BY ANY OTHER POTATOE WHOLE BACKED OR MASHED AND DELICATE DELICIOUS FLAVOR ! AND THE THICK BAKED SKIN WAS A NOTHER DELIGHTFUL TREAT WITH BUTTER ! ALL OF THESE QUALITIES ARE MISSING FROM THE POTATOES SOLD AS A IDAHO POTATO ! THEY MAY BE A HYBRID OF THE EASTERN POTATOE WITH THE ORIGINAL BAKING IDAHO POTATOE! AND SINCE THEIR NEW INCEPTION THEY ARE MORE LIKE THE EASTERN POTATOE IN SHAPE & SIZE WITH HINT OF TEXTURE OF THE ORIGINAL POTATOE! THE FIRST IDAHO POTATOE WAS A NATURAL CREATIVE MUTATION AND RECOGNIZED IN A GARDEN IN THE STATE OF MAINE OVER120 YEARS AGO AND CULTILVATED AND TAKEN TO CALIFORNIA AND SOLD TO BURPPEA SEED COMPANY !
