I think Whitney’s was the most patriotically inspiring. She didn’t over sing or under sing. She didn’t sing it too high or too low. It was juuuuuuuuuuuuust right. It’s already a beautiful melody and poignant lyric so just the addition of a singer’s texture of voice and their tasteful rendition is enough! *EDIT* For people saying Whitney lip synced, yes we all know that…they prerecorded it for 2 reasons… 1. Most singers at that time opted in to lip sync the NA at the SB for quality assurance reasons…the wind, elements have RUINED many Live National Anthems…2. Clive Davis wanted to release it as a single (which he did). We ALL KNOW WHITNEY COULD SING LIVE, even Rickey Minor said she recorded the National Anthem in ONE TAKE, so basically that’s a Live vocal that’s been recorded.
I also think John Clayton's arrangement of Whitney's version is just amazing. Her vocal prowess combined the geniality of that arrangement - I don't think anyone will ever be able to top that.

Correct. Her rendition is nonpareil. Along with the qualities you noted, her power, timing, simplicity, phrasing, timbre, and understanding of what a song needs to blossom is what makes her performance by far the best; and it’ll remain so until someone can hopefully top it.
Also, the actual visual of her performance is unmatched. So much energy and passion and soul! Only performance of the National Anthem that has ever given me goosebumps no matter how many times I watch it.

People always butcher the tune to show off their vocals… the song is basic and not meant to be sung by a singer with a big ego but by a lot of proud people.
Demi Lovato's version is the perfect example of knowing your strengths and sticking to them. She kept it relatively simple, didn't go overboard, but still sounded powerful and beautiful and elegant! She knew what she was doing!
Kelly Clarkson's voice is just so beautiful. There's no denying it. Her tone is pure and piercing, yet so round and nice. I'm in love with her voice and I have been for a long time. Also. Whitney is my fav.

Had anyone else won the first season, it probably would have fizzled out in a couple of years. She is, vocally, one of the greats; it just took a rather unconventional and novel way to discover her.

She won because she is your Average girl, who is normally not given a chance. She was all about ABOLISHING standards! In a world without standards what you will have the reign of IDIOCRACY. Clarkson is not an Idol material. Sure she can yell and yell. But if that girl competed in Asia, she will not pass through the audition process. Unless, she was chosen to fill the Fat girl quota. I'd suggest looking up some of her live performances. Also Adam Lambert, Haley Reinhart, Jennifer Hudson and many others very non-average.

We have to give props to the lower voices in the music business because there is so much praise for those that hit the head notes. I don’t think the song itself is super difficult. If you have the range and decent technique you can sing it. The nerve racking part is being watched by millions and being expected to kill it. Because if you don’t it will haunt you forever.

@BlackMamba Frankly speaking, this statement is anti-R&B and hence anti-black. There are so many whisper singers like Janet. There are so many pop singers who used whispers as an artistic choice like Michael, Prince and Mariah (Whitney too on MLIYL when she hopped on the R&B trend following her other female competitor). Whispers is a more hip hop element which is the choice of straights. But of course how would you know anything, but I'm literally a fully fledged hip hop fan so I know better. What I think is that Whitney's version is as gay as it can get, the key, the tone...none of me or my metalhead friends like an ugly head voice transition...which is an absolute screech. Marvin Gaye is more generally considered the best, but gays go for Whitney definitely.
I'm Indonesian. I have to put my highest respect to Whitney. As a "non-American", Whitney's version will always be the most memorable for me. I think it's because her version feels so "Patriotic" more than any other singers...

I personally don't like it. I feel like she is always showing off, yet adding nothing to the song. She has a decent range, but there's no emotions or depth behind it and her tone is quite bland.. Just my opinion though.

I think one of Arianas strengths its closed vowels, her time on broadway was really worth it, the guy was amazing too, bet he’s from musical theater, and Celine did it perfectly, as a vocal Star she is!! It‘s so difficult to sustain this vowel openly, props to them 👏

Very well done video. You analyzed everything while giving examples to each. Personally, the 👑 goes to the trinity. Whitney did the most fierce, strong, empowering, inspiring version. Celine, whose performance is very underrated, added very cool adlibs whole DELIVERING Eb5 left and right. And Mimi delivered a more vulnerable, emotional, sensitive yet unique while ofc using her range as her biggest weapon to showcase her musicality. After the legends, I would say I really enjoyed Madison’s version.

As Lea Solonga once said: we all have different instruments, and those instruments shine differently on specific notes. The original key of a song is irrelevant if it doesn’t suit your voice. The reason Whitney’s, Beyoncé’s, and many other renditions were so successful is because the key was perfect. It’s impressive if a mezzo can attempt a soprano’s key, but it’s much more honorable to hear the anthem sung in the way the singer can show the best parts of their voice.

I feel that the Riffs and Runs are a bit extra. They shouldn’t make the national anthem as their own. Whitney Houston’s one was the best and it was very good and not too extra anyway.

I didn’t like Lady Gaga performance at the inauguration either. If I remember correctly, she’s a classically trained musician and her performance to me was terrible. But that’s just my opinion.

Ally was SO nervous on that perfomance, I feel so sad cause she could have killed on the key she was doing, but she sounded rough on the whole perfomance sadly, even her G5 transition sounded weak (Also she performed It this year and lowered the key on one tone, compared to the one she did, and sounded really good! Even tho she struggled a little bit with the lows) 7:21 the resonance!!! Queen

I never said she was a horrible singer, I just said I think she's average. In my opinion, her vocals in that clip didn't really stand out much and were a little shaky. She also went off key in a few parts. It was pretty much at the level you would usually see on shows like American Idol etc. She is perhaps a good singer, but not great. Of course there's nothing wrong with that though. I do jam out to her song Low Key sometimes haha..

I think Ari should’ve went into head. Her head voice is so strong and would’ve sounded more pleasing on the closed vowel. I think women should always use head for the part but men may vary depending on vocal color
Ari is great. I think it’s more of a stylistic choice that most of these singers flip to their head tones on that part. Whitney did it first and I think the others just followed suit.
Whitney chose to use head to change the color of the note, but we know that she could easily hit that Eb in mix as well! It was a creative choice. We shouldn’t discredit singers who choose to do one or the other. Both are equally impressive.

Nothing will beat Whitney Houston's in my opinion. Though I will say that you did forget one, which was actually the version that inspired Whitney to change the rhythm and melody a bit for her and that was Marvin Gaye's version from the 1983 NBA All-Star game. He didn't just sing it, it turned it into a song with soul. He gave it a smooth R&B rhythm. He made our national anthem just freaking cool.
Cher’s version is so underappreciated. She did amazingly it. Mariah and Whitney of course are both the standards for belters and melismatics. Always the biggest influences ♥️

Not enough clips of Mariah's version! I loved her rendition and thought she made some wonderful note changes and riffs. Her whistle of course was amazing, but I also love her take on the very last "brave" note..
