Why is There So Much Plastic on Harley-Davidson's?

A Plastic Intake is a BAD IDEA! It Can Melt, Warp, & Leak, Causing the Engine to Run Poorly, Too Lean, & Ultimately Reduces Longevity. Fortunately Most Seem to Hold up. I Replaced Mine.
⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️ Click Show More Below ⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️
This is a PSA Video. We are not selling intake manifolds. I used an S&S intake manifold when replacing my plastic intake manifold. Standard size. Oversize manifolds (many folks think bigger is always better) do NOT make more power.
On an engine that does not have increased compression & a big bore kit, the engine will not run as strong with an oversized manifold or throttle body. It is better to stick with OEM size.

I rode my 1999 Evo powered Heritage Softail to the Harley Stealership for the first time in years. I spent probably 30 minutes looking around and walked out. I didn't see one thing in there that really struck me as something I should purchase and certainly not at the prices they are asking. I'm stocked up on replacement parts for the old girl and plan to stay with it until the good Lord calls me home.

Just took my MY23 sport glide into the dealer this morning for rough idle (too low) and hesitant revs… told me there was an air leak on the plastic manifold. Rather than fitting a new plastic one and seals they suggested I paid the difference for the warranty claim to upgrade to a screaming eagle aluminium body. It was £77 (GBP) difference. Bike is totally better again. Amazing upgrade. Plastic crap between two cylinders shouldn’t be there. Can’t believe Harley would do this still now on the M8 when they must have seen repeated warranty claims for it? Tech told me this morning it’s not worth warranty claim in the plastic for plastic as if keep coming back over the next two years under warranty and then upgrade to metal to finally resolve the issue. They done the test with brake cleaner (in less than 30s like you said) Excellent video, just advise a low lumpy Idle too is possible (like I had) in the next one 👍🏻

Yeah, HD probably figured they could get away with the plastic intake (to save $) because auto manufacturers have been doing it for years. And truth is, that a relatively small number of HD's are having the problem you had....but if they get too hot, that is what can happen. I did note that on the new 121 CVO's with VVT, they are using the aluminum intake manifold, not the plastic one. See in this video- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-58cVhVnlz6w.html Glad you got yours taken care of. 👍😎👍

One of the first things I did to my 2017 FLHTK was replacing the restrictive manifold with an S&S, and before installing that I took the time to gently sand it down…not polishing,..inside for just that little better flow. That way another thing came of my mind when cruising the E-Glide down HW1 here in Calif., it’s just a great feeling that you know exactly what’s going on inside your engine and that you have an impact on it. 👌🏻☠️🇺🇸

Bought a new 2023 HD Road Glide ST a few months ago (Feb. 2023) and here's what I changed so far (as of late Apr. 2023): 1. Trask M8 Checkvent, metal, to properly ventilate crankcase (& eliminate the HD OE plastic piece). 2. S&S 55mm Intake Manifold, aluminum & ported by Ward (eliminated the HD OE plastic intake manifold). 3. Added the HD Fan to the oil cooler and had HD Dealer flash the ECU. 4. Added the S&S 2-1 Sidewinder Exhaust w/dB reducer and no cat. Bye-bye to the stock HD OE Exhaust. More to come...such as the plastic connector piece in the clutch cable adjuster...will be installing an aftermarket metal piece ($50).

Composites are good for managing heat soak on the intake charge. Harleys just run so hot, that their choice of materials for the intake was poor. GM and others still use composite intakes. Here is an example of a current composite intake, 6.2 Liter LT1 Intake manifold.
@markman7

This guy gets it. If your intake melts, you got the engine way too hot, and this is not a water cooled engine. The water only helps (very slightly) around the exhaust port of the head. A lawn mower is cooled much better with a fan and shroud.

I have a product suggestion, yall should make a higher flow air filter for the 114 ventilator that flows more than the K&N filter. I was looking at the FuelMoto one, and it's too wide, and would get in the way of my knee when cornering. And I ride twisties a lot. It'd be really cool to have a replacement filter that's like a 1/2inch wider, flows a bit more, and has billet or steel stand offs to make it work great with the SE/114 Oval Ventilator.
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts Год назад
I think we do have what you are describing. You can see them at this link- www.dkcustomproducts.com/milwaukee-eight-outlaw-hiflow-828-air-cleaner-complete-systems.htm And this particular one is made to work with a TC ventilator cover- www.dkcustomproducts.com/complete-hiflow-828-air-cleaner-milwaukee-eight-prepped-for-ventilator-cover.htm AND, later this month we will have two that allow for the installation of any of the oval ventilator badges. 👍
@FranBunnyFFXII
@FranBunnyFFXII Год назад
@@DKCustomProducts I was basically just looking for something like FuelMoto or Arlen Ness makes where it's a filter that goes into the stock setup on the M8 114. the FM one is a bit too wide for my liking, and the Arlen ness one is properly sized but has nylon spacers instead of billet/metal. And I've had some sketchy experiences with Arlen Ness over the years. I was thinking you guys could make a better filter than Arlen Ness with a similar slightly wider than stock profile, but with better quality and ffilteration design since you guys have more experience with hardware that actually performs well making power and maintaining good quality, using proper metal parts and bolts.
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts Год назад
Thanks for the good words. 👍 There may be a larger filter element that will fit the ventilator (but then will the filter mounting fasteners in the ventilator work?) The best solution we have come up with for staying low profile and getting a bigger filter element for flow, and keeping the ventilator look, is the 828 that is designed to work with the TC Ventilator Cover.

Because they are not premium quality motorcycles where drivetrains are concerned. Their success is due to easy REbuild and overhaul to zero time and a magnificent aftermarket facilitated by their simple engine design and rebuildable crankshafts. The only intake manifold offered for HDs that was actually good is the Ram Jett one-piece intake for Evos which replaced the idiotic rubber boots on early Evos. They're so stout it's safe to lift the engine by a sling under the intake which I've done and not provoked any leaks. Everything else is designed for rapid line assembly after which they're the customer's problem. Properly designed engines don't require a waterfall of replacement parts to be reliable but fortunately new HD customers are rich enough to fix everything and even be proud of spending the money. Fine with me since my brother mechanics need to eat too.

Do I have to retune my 2020 Street Glide after install?

Do you need to retune the bike after upgrading the intake and the 64mm throttle body on a 114?
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts Год назад
You do not need to retune when upgrading the intake with the OEM size. Within a few weeks we will be publishing a video on why, except in extreme build circumstances, moving to a 64mm throttle body will REDUCE your power. We were surprised on the Dyno, about 15 years ago, when we saw that increasing the size of the throttle body Reduces power. Bigger is Not always better. If you are not doing a big bore upgrade, w/ an aggressive cam, going to a 64mm will not bring you good results...and yes, you would need to retune the bike.

I will be interested in this video. I have a 97 evo softail that had a larger SE carb and intake installed by dealership. After I got it back I swore it didn't run any better than stock. Added a Andrew ev27 cam recently and still am disappointed with performance at regular highway speeds. Engine is otherwise stock.

We did not change just one thing when we did the intake manifold...so it is impossible to know which of the things we did increased or decreased temps. Reports out there are a 5-10 degree drop, but we cannot verify that one way or another.

I will let the warranty cover it... my guess is that people who run their engines way too hot are the ones suffering from this. Keep your engine operating cool and my guess is you will be okay. Most all engine manufacturers today use plastic intakes. Good info though. Thanks :-)
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts Год назад
That is definitely one way to deal with it (warranty) if always riding close to home. Definitely those that run too hot are going to have a higher rate of failure.
@richardrussell500
@richardrussell500 Год назад
@@DKCustomProducts no doubt... I guess the biggest concern is the warranty issue. with a new aftermarket cam comes an EPA non-compliant tuner. and, if something goes wrong, that HD can show was caused by a poor tune in the engine or malfunctioning aftermarket part, then the cost of rebuilding or replacing your engine comes out of your pocket (unless of course you have a Jim Palmer aftermarket warranty policy with a $2000+ price tag). at 8500 miles, my 2020 114 Freewheeler engine sumped and destroyed the engine. $8500 estimate to rebuild if rebuildable and $14000 to install a crate engine (parts/labor). no thanks. I will always maintain a warranty as long as I ride a HD. period. I will never modify my engine, so I have the Jim Palmer basic warranty policy for 5 years with a price tag under $1400. I feel confident riding my HD long after the factory warranty expires. ride safe : - )

@DKCustomProducts

I would replace it on my wife's truck if there was a history of them melting. Not a lot of HD plenums melt, but enough of them do that I don't want to be one of the ones that it does, especially thousands of miles from home on a trip.

You are absolutely correct...it is not a high % at all. I do not know the %, but I would guess a few out of thousands. But, if a person is one of those few, they are not going to be happy campers. Here is what a HD Service Manager has to say: "Kevin you seen my bike I have the Aluminum Intake ported by Ward / S&S... it was good for closing the gap on the dyno to the tune of six horsepower under the Curve on my stock compression 114 rdrs equipped fltrxs... *I've seen too many of them melt in the service department and it's an easy and inexpensive fix* "

M8's are very different than Twin Cams. The M8 is Not too lean from the factory. See this video showing that- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Lb_57Z_Ipms.html And here is a written report with plenty of AFR charts showing that the OEM tune is not too lean- www.dkcustomproducts.com/milwaukee-eight-dyno-charts-other-interesting-info-dk-m8-rpt.htm The heat is not from a lean condition...it is too hot from a variety of other reasons...the EPA cam being one, the restrictive intake and exhaust, more CI in the same space, no oil cooler on the Twin-Cooled models, and other reasons.
