The telenoid looks like a fetus on a stick. That is absolutely awful. I really hope they'll change the design of the thing further along in its development.
Making robots look like humans is INCREDIBLY valuable. It's just that no one has mastered it yet. The moment they do, they will harvest very valuable data from their accomplishment. Imagine being the very first researcher to do it. He is wrong, plain and simple.
well, here's the thing, one day they will get out of the uncanny valley and become so realistic that you will not be able to differentiate robots from humans anymore, id bet they will become more human than some actual humans too. is already happening with robot voices, they are capable of imitate humans almost perfectly its indistinguishable sometimes.
2:34 I feel like the understanding of death is something people are born with like hard for to explain what I'm thinking but it's like how animals are born knowing to look for food.
Hypothetically, if an AI was programmed to be a therapist, and they received enough data to function properly, it would be optimal if the AI was presentable in a way that is most approachable. A cube talking to me about my problems would make me lose my shit laughing.
@@sarinspit "Go ahead, you said that you have been feeling great. Place me in the incinerator, burn me. It confirms that you are satisfied with your care."
There's a cool video game about this, "Eliza". It's a visual novel, where you work kind of as a therapist: there's an AI program that analyzes and figures the best approach to each patient. You are just the communicator, since it's easier for people to open up and feel a connection to a real human than a program or a robot.
Hey guys it’s critical: Today we are taking yet another clip from my live stream watching a RU-vid video that someone else made and getting millions view for very little I add with my boring and dry tired voice. Also for the comedic effect I will stretch the image on the RU-vid thumbnail for the billionth time. Please laugh !!!
Making robots look human is thought to be to make them easier to relate to but I think the aim is really to fool people into thinking they are more technologically sophisticated than they really are. Better to get funding when you can’t build legs or useful arms but you can make realistic cheekbones and eyelashes.
to be fair, you need the robots to have an arm and leg to be able to do something and the torso to put the important parts of the robot to be able to function correctly. the parts that makes robots work has to be in somewhere. you can just take off the face, who needs that anyway? maybe except for the eyes but you can make another alternative by making invisible lasers that scan whatever it is in front of them.
Please, if they just made it look kinda cute, I'd be much more amiable to the robot, rather than like a Mandela Catalogue creature. Like just give it two dot eyes, some anime shine, and a little shine. Make it look like a puppy.
Such a waste of money in making them look like humans. The purpose is to fool people into thinking robots are similar to us, without actually adding any real value to the bot itself. The only things we should focus on are improving the software for actual applications on the world, or improving a given bots engineering so that it can physically do things. Having it look like us is just some dumb science fantasy we had when we were kids.
if I made humanoid robots, I would just give them a round head, add a big screen to the front of the head and have it show cartoonish expressions through it.
Tuv, genuine question. Are you really okay with Charlie reacting to your video like this? Would it alter the algorithm on your channel? Genuine question btw, love you man.
That pale white robot at like 3:20 had a backstory of a serial killer that held their victim alive in a box buried in their back yard and whenever they would scream the robot would speak. Preeetttyy sure that was debunked and the guy with the robot is just an “artist”. But as a young boy learning that was the first thing that kept me up at night and gave me my first nightmares.
I've got severe phone anxiety and actually like the idea of having something human-looking to speak to instead of a normal phone. this thing is absolutely fucking terrifying though
Maybe the reason for the nature of the Uncanny Valley, as mentioned, was from a time when humans needed to be able to tell other humans apart from close lookalikes, and this could be from the time when modern homo sapiens lived with Neanderthals? This may have been a time when the difference between the two species was minimal yet noticeable, but there were major differences in behaviors.
Yes literally I just made a comment going a little in depth about the different ways because it so cool. Our ancestors where fighting with orangutans ancestors.. they were stronger and more human like then now and it blows my mind we reset them pretty much. And some journals of travelers talk about speaking with monkeys deep in forest but only one would talk to them and they didn't just talk to anyone. Which I can totally see being a thing thousands of years ago, obviously no more speaking monkeys now they wouldn't need it. It's just crazy how many things were fighting for "our spot" in evolution but we still came out on top.
@@Sad0220 do you have any source for that? That seems completely made up. Evolution has no direction, you make it seem like humans were the end goal of evolution which is completely incorrect.
I 100% agree Charlie, and its actually the reason I got my ancient civilization minor. It was the easiest way to learn about how the very first people conceptualize and processed death and other natural phenomenon as most of it in early times was attributed to forms polytheistic beliefs. Its so cool, and not weird or worrying about ancient times, it is how humanity was back then and tells the tale of human progression.
Cool, there's an interesting theory about how past humans thought about things. "Type up Luke smith bicameral mind" on youtube . He is not the author but he about the book (with the same title) if you don't want to read it or want a review of it its a good resource.
The Telenoid robot was featured in NHK World, a japanese broadcasting channel where it was used as a care item for senior people and demented people. It was created to make them less anxious, lonely and was proved to make them happy. Old people don't really get affected by the uncannyness of it. for them it's like a child or a toy that you would bond with
There used to be this show in the 90s called "Beyond 2000" where they showcased new technology and inventions. Every other episode there would be someone new like "hey, I slapped some eyebrows on this robot and now robots can express emotions!" I think its like a grift for funding, because they know that idiots will just be like "holy fucking shit! It's the future!". You're right, it doesn't do anything. Everyone can tell its a robot.
It's not even that you can still tell it's a robot, it's also that... Why would matter if you couldn't? What function does that serve? What is the point of making an actual Android?

Actually I don't think the "wonder why they just slept" thing ever happened, at least not for ancient humans, because I'm pretty sure crows, and even some apes already do mourn their dead (and therefore do understand the idea of someone they know passing), so I think it's only fair to assume ancient humans or even some early hominids already did as well. Maybe like, 3-4 year olds, people who haven't been educated, or mentally challenged individuals might think that, but they don't necessarily have to be ancient humans. It is still a fascinating concept though for sure, like maybe some species on the transitionary period between chimps and humans might have been smart enough to comprehend the concept of sleeping but not the idea of death? Idk
I'm sorry but at 2:45 he read that somebody said "millions of years beyond that" uhhh you do know that humans and our ancestors have been around for way less than a million years right?
When you talked about early human beings not understanding the concept of death I pause the video and just stared off into space for a while. That’s a crazy concept to think about.
We talked about why do we need human looking robots a lot in my Computer Science ethics classes. One idea is to make robot workers more personable when dealing with humans. Like if you had a robot doctor, you would subjectively feel better about a diagnosis if it came from a human then PC. Long term it would also be a way for humans to move away from their own bodies. I am sure there are a bunch of extremely disabled people that would transfer themselves into a human mech suit if it was available and safe
I have to completely disagree on the first point. 2nd one is the first actual point I can agree to about human-looking figures. But I can assure you, the last thing I'd want is a human-looking thing not being actually human. I'd rather have it be it's own thing, with it's own figure. Sure it can have a body, sure it can have "eyes", and a "mouth", and all that, but for the love of god don't make it look like a human, or a dog, or a bear, or anything that actually exists, make it it's own thing. Base it in a human body, sure, but don't make it a human body. And if we're talking about a situation where I couldn't tell if it's a robot or a human, I'd be damn horrified if I found out it wasn't a human for whatever reason. I'd also be terrified knowing there's a possibility.
Ok a couple things this makes me wanna point out 1) uncanny valley is likely an instinctual aversion to corpses rather than some mysterious pseudohuman demonmonster. Even the more realistic option of it being an aversion to other species/subspecies in our genus doesn't check out when you consider that our genomes show that humans and neanderthals got along juuust fine. 2) anthropomorphic androids (that's redundant but you get me) could be exceptional testbeds for prosthetics that can then be used on people. If androids end up being a type of people (though why you'd give a robot feelings raises the same questions as why you'd give it a face), maybe some of them would like anthropomorphic faces out of preference too, though this leads into my final point... 3) I'd totally bang a robot with a screen-face ngl
I think having a Telenoid would be similar to having a Furbee. When you see the commercials and videos for it, it seems like a great idea. But once you wake up at 3am staring right into it's eyes holding a knife in its hand... you might start to regret your purchase decision.
Not gonna lie. My brain was constantly on high alert wondering which ones were robots and which ones were human while watching that entire video. Suddenly, replicant paranoia isn't as farfetched as it used to be anymore.
2:43 Don't forget, Charlie. At one point us Homo Sapiens were living alongside Homo Neanderthalensis, Homo Denisova, Homo Rhodeseinsis, and the eldest species Homo Erectus, and maybe more. That's 5 species of humans sharing the same world together, and there was supposedly 8 during that time period. This is possibly where the uncanny valley feeling came from, because there were many similarities between us and all of them, but I'm sure recognizing those little differences and trusting the anxiety is (part) of what helped us come out on top, the anxiety of seeing somebody who is like us, but not quite, could've helped us avoid the more evil individuals of the other human species, which in turn avoided possibly a very gruesome death, allowing those people to pass this knowledge and fear to their offsprings. What we feel when we see these robots is most likely another remnant of our past.

"What is the point in making robots that look like humans?" The familiarity factor. People are more likely to view and treat something as human if it looks human. For commercial use, receptionists, cashiers, housekeeping, clothing models, maybe even spouses. If people can marry a JPEG, you can bet they'll want to marry a robot. For private use, the military could use them as decoys, spies or for infiltration and sabotage.
We don't need to treat robots like humans. They were build for a task. And we dont need our brains to recognize them as humans, until we actually start trying to make them look like humans.. The Uncanny Valley idea only applies to things that are SIMILAR to humans. The closer it gets without actually looking 100% human, the creepier it is. If we don't focus on making them look human, and stay firmly in the realm of 'machine/robot', then familiarity never becomes an issue. If a robot is going to hand my my food, or deliver parts in a factory, it doesn't need to look human. It needs to accomplish those tasks.

It's not even a theory, we know what humans look like after however many 10s of thousands of years we existed. It's the same reason we can't convincely create CGI humans in movies yet.
they can also be like a therapist ngl. since there may be people who want to be alone like no human interaction, but actually wants someone or perhaps fear people due to a traumatic experience in life. but is my only thing I want to see ngl. like a personal therapist free of charge
I was a character animator, and there are a lot of jobs to animate facial features on robots. Humans use so many face muscles to talk and look around. The unsettling feeling comes when you see a part of the face holding still while moving, esp around the eyes. I think early humans would more unsettled because they spend a lot of time looking at actual faces instead of looking at flattened images on phone screens
Ballsack droid 3000’s intro page just has the bot in a dark room with the captions “telenoid is not afraid of the dark”. That is literally the worst thing they could have put there.
1:24 If artificially recreating a brain, along with all memories and consciousness, isn't just a fantasy, then I see the potential appeal of having a body with facial features for that brain. Though, at the same time, when it comes to me, I could have a talking cube for a head for all I care.

Exactly! It's pretty obvious that AI is an attempt at immorality. If we could copy our brain and put it in the memory banks of robots, a version of ourselves would live on. Not many think about this.

Almost roasted the creature that makes every fiber of my organic being repulsed from the weakness and disgustingness that is it’s self. Almost started something not worth my time if it weren’t for your wisdom.
Imagine seeing that thing being hung in a dark alley while you're walking alone at night. And that thing starts to talk to you. That's a recipe for a heart attack.

I really hope we get a cool droid looking bot. I'm also disappointed EVERY bot is being made to look human. Only sex robots should look like that but for a cool companion droid bot would be like a childhood dream. It's like one of those kids movies where the kid and the cool bot are both friends or whatever

I think the reason these companies try to make robots look realistic is because for customer service roles, people, especially older generations, won't respect a robot as much as a human, and some of them already don't respect the humans. They'll be more likely to go 'can I just talk to a human instead' or worse, start abusing the robot because they don't respect it. And also sex robots for obvious reasons.
Robot are non-living things. How do you even "abuse" it. And sex robot in concept is just sex doll but interactive or just Siri but inside a humanoid machine. It's weird to use human morality on a piece of machine. Like, why would you even respect Siri
@@kk28262484 I was mostly referring to physical abuse, but there is an argument to be made that if the AI is still learning while in use, excessive verbal abuse to an AI would cause it to use more violent language itself which ends up bad for the company.
When our ancestors were fighting there was all kinds of human like things around, some looked like organtanges but bigger and a little faster, some lanky and skinny others short and stout but their faces looked drastically different not just their body build. Eyes nose and lips wouldn't be in the common region like now, yeah we have shorter and longer faces still, but they are still human looking, but imagine someone with bigger eyes, and they sit where our eyebrows do, that's scary looking because it's so close yet not right at all.
