Why is trying to place items when building settlements so annoying? 

You'll still try for another 30 minutes though, maybe an hour... or longer...

Ahhhh, the never-ending cycle of pain.

At least it's not as bad as Fallout 76's building, where it'll literally turn green and then still say you can't place it for some reason that isn't fully explained to you. I made the mistake of trying to make my base out of an existing building and holy shit the engine doesn't know what to do with itself, sometimes putting the items on the roof without warning, sometimes not allowing them at all, sometimes only placing very specific items on the roof. It's absolutely awful.

Yup. That and a mod that let's you scrap all the junk laying around that you normally can't.

Never understood why we can’t scrap the filth or the unlit lanterns in the middle of the floor. With as much marketing that went into settlement building, it’s surprising how little they actually worked on it.

If you're on PC, the console command "disable" is your greatest tool (as long as you save often so you don't accidentally delete the wrong cell). But yeah, it's strange that cleaning up/repairing buildings wasn't implemented in the game - it seems like it would have been relatively simple to implement something where you could scrap things like roofs and then place a new one on the building.

@@psychomachia unfortunately I’m trying to 100% a vanilla game. So no console. And believe it or not, my vanilla Fallout 4 (plus dlc and two CC) has crashed more than my last NV playthru (with dlc, not 100% tho).

at least you can drag the skeleton, but leaves inside the buildings annoy me more and piles of garbage in the corners

The settlement one. Give me the time, materials (Copper, tape, and wood, and most perks (Because let's kneecap the fun mechanic behind levels and/or perks, right?)), and a moment to brainstorm. Renovated my old house in Sanctuary Hills for a "Nora" run, and well you can't do crap for the roof, you can make a nice enough little house.
