That's an interesting back story. My names alycia and after I converted I use my second name Jamila as well but as it's my second name I don't feel like I'm changing identity. Funny my mum gave my sister and I arabic names for either first or second names and I ended up converting lol.
I feel this so much! My mom's Korean and my dad's Afghan (Tajik). After explaining that I'm not Malay or Indonesian (or Uyghur, or from Mindanao... this is what people always assume based on my appearance) it goes something like this: People assume my mom must be Christian (since most of the Korean diaspora is Christian) because my siblings and I have White people sounding versions of Biblical names but she's actually a Buddhist... and she only chose the names because of suggestions from her friends. XD

My daughter's name is Melanie and I picked it because I thought it sounded pretty and because I also thought it was unique. I've only ever met two people in my entire life with that name and I'm so glad I picked it :)

Asalaamu Alaikum! I know of a Muslim boy named Christian. Just because his family liked the name. My cousin is named Rashida but she is not Muslim although because of the name she is often mistaken as such. Melanie and Melody are two of my favorite names
We are an interracial couple and Simon is a convert. He was dead against taking on another name because he said he is still the same person, just Muslim. I completely agree with him. I also feel if you change your name it’s a bit of an offence to your parents - as if changing religion isn’t enough, changing the name that your parents took ages deciding is just another kick in the teeth!
I hate my given name as she put zero though into it, but changing my name gave me a fresh start away from abuse and apathetic parents, so it’s different for each person but I totally agree with your statement as well, it shouldn’t change the person other than their religion!

I understand the struggle with names like that! My sister's name is Zara, but people constantly call her Sarah or Zora even??? The name I go by is Eleni, and I've heard things like Eloni, Loleni, Helena, Elaine, Elenai, etc. In our home country, we experienced little to no issues with our names, but it becomes a different story in the United States always. It's kind of funny how its almost the same experience with names!
I have an aunt whos a convert, and she married into our family. Her name is Tatiana, but our family call her aamina. She didn't change her name, so its kind of like she has 2 names.

Ur name being of a foreign origin is not strange to be muslim - as here in Egypt especially the younger generation, I know people who name their children foreign names though being muslim and an Arab actually as a change .. But of course we can't deny that Arabic names are more common 😊

Maybe its ignorance on my part but you would think after years of marriage to a Muslim with Muslim children and one being an imam that she would have seen the truth?....I pray all the time that I can bring my parents to Islam but who knows....in sha Allah....With the name thing...Its quite annoying actually because people ask me why my name is Chelsey....This assumption that converts have to change their name is ridiculous. What? Im not really even sure why you came to that assumption...Obviously as Muslims we believe Islam is the truth. For most non Muslims, they are not Muslim because of hate, ignorance or devotion to what their fathers handed down to them. So what I meant was if someone has all the tools to learn about the beauty of Islam, family, marriage etc than it is fascinating that they are not Muslims themselves. I mean if anyone would convert it would be someone like her mother whose husband is a Muslim and has beautiful successful children who also practice the deen, who has first hand knowledge of the beauty of Islam and its truth. So it was merely a question as to why she still believes Catholicism is the path to Jennah. Please sister, it is better to be kind and assume the best out of people. I sincerely, to Melanie did not mean any offense nor did I insinuate what you are saying. There is no compulsion in Islam.
