You can tell that there isn't a larger plan behind a lot of the traffic infrastructure beyond 'How can we increase bandwidth for cars' in many states, which only scales so far. They are shoving more cars on the same size road instead of investing in higher capacity, more economical forms of transportation, and they'll continue to do it until smarter people are voted in or shit literally crumbles.

Kansas resident chiming in. The only states with even a bill in committee, say nothing of actually passing a law (with the weird exception of Montana), are those with major population centers of millions of people. We...are not. In most of the state, laws concerning tractors and horses on the road are more relevant. I think filtering would have to happen on a municipal level here, unless Missouri passes one and all the cross-state-line confusion in Kansas City forces our hand. Even then, I don't doubt the Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office welcomes the ticketing of Missouri riders in that situation and would lobby against Kansas legalizing.

As an Oregon resident who does not ride, or have any personal reason to give a s*** about lane-splitting, I was so incredibly livid when I heard that the Oregon bill was vetoed by Kate Brown. I couldn't believe that we had used so many resources so many resources to get a well thought out, bipartisan agreement on this bill and then she vetoed it. Lane splitting is better for traffic, motorcyclists, air-cooled bikes, and doesn't negatively affect car motorists. Motorcycles being able to filter to the front of traffic on California prevent them from being rear ended at stoplights and stopped traffic, and have little I'll effect. I'm glad it got so close, and I'm hopeful this goes through one day in my lovely state of Oregon.

From what I have seen is if it’s so unsafe to do, then why do mc police do it any chance they get. I would assume an osha review of body cams on pd bikes with rider explanation as why they do it. Just saying us tax payers pay for that equipment so why does that equipment get used in an illegal way in “such a dangerous way.” Lane filtering is only as dangerous as the rider makes it. Just like passing on a two way road with a car it’s the operators risk for reward to do so or not.

The laws should read "splitting allowed when traffic is 50mph or less" not the speed limit of the road because jams on highways and interstates are where a lot of bikers will get rear ended and die when traffic is stop and go during rush hour. It blows my mind that lane splitting is still illegal in the U.S when it's been proven time and time again to reduce rear end fatalities of motorcyclists by over 30% and increase flow of traffic. The only reason it's illegal is because it's not fair, what's not fair is motorcyclists potentially losing their life because of laws created from emotion instead of safety.

Right on red traffic laws spread all across the USA in the 70's because the federal gov't required states to adopt it to get federal transportation assistance. Same for permitting motorcycles in HOV lanes. The federal gov't needs to require states to adopt lane splitting to keep receiving federal transportation money.

The hurdles enumerated in your video are sobering. Hard to get a majority to give one jot about the wishes of motorcyclists. In Virgina you can be thrown in jail for filtering past stalled traffic at 5 MPH but a car can legally blast past a bicycle in the same lane, the cyclist navigating the gravel broken glass, and sticks in the margin of the lane. Laws favor the car, king of the American road.

The more research I do, the more my thought process evolves on how to get to the end result I want. I used to think it was about 'Winning hearts and minds' of the average voter in a state, but that doesn't actually translate into direct actions, as far as getting laws proposed and passed. What works is finding a few lawmakers that are sympathetic to your cause, engaging with them relentlessly (Squeaky wheel), getting more people to pester their reps until there is at least a kindling of support burning. I feel for anyone in states that have never had a bill submitted (It was actually a shock to me how many states had never even had an attempt), as that is the hardest part, but like a snowball down a hill, the momentum builds and it does get easier as you go along.

I had some conversation with the head of a local ABATE chapter who told me that they were already talking to lawmakers about how to modify the bill to resolve the concerns that WSDOT had. Now I don't know confidently that is happening, and I don't know what specifically they are doing to get it changed, but that's what someone in an email told me, and I haven't followed up yet about it but I will. I think we need to operate like that is NOT going to happen, so we all need to read up on the analysis and testimony that was submitted, see how we can adjust the bill to solve some of those concerns, and then blast that out to all the people who signed onto this bill as sponsors. I know there were concerns about restricting it to highways or some other nuanced concern about road type, their might be more.

Realistically this would take dozens if not hundreds of persons showing up to testify, writing the governor's office and having a laser focus on the chair of the house. Writing them isn't enough by itself. That POS individual has regularly put this bill on hold despite bipartisan support during the creation of it. I would not be surprised if there are paid lobbyists on the opposing side. The majority of the persons who are asked to vote don't ride, and just hear buzz words in the prepared statement of the opposition. Once they hear it critical thinking stops, and they all go back to a cubicle mode way of thinking, 'if it's not in my cubicle then I don't care about it'. Whatever statement you have to make during testimony, keep it short, factual and to the point. You may only have less than 2 minutes to speak.

My best guess for IL "killing" anti-helmet law is that's all they heard. They being the wider variety of "baggers", really safe conscious riders who like looking at stats and die by them about safety or prefer talking about mpg than the actual riding of their motorbikes, or just general cruiser guys that dislike the idea of taking their large bikes through truck/suv dense cities, when the outlying roads might be traffic free in the few months they could ride. Why would a 250 Sport guy care about wearing a helmet when he can save 15 mins splitting in rush hour congestion during the melting summer? Maybe he's glad it's in gov and thinks it's going well, why say again and again that it's supposed to continue support with the amendments? How active are voters after just getting that much knowledge that "it's getting worked on". -typed at 11;30 I'll have to get with you and others in the community and find out more for my state MO. That study is really interesting. It seems to say lane splitting drivers are less likely to be severely injured if their crash happened during a lane splitting event, but ALSO that lane splitting drivers were significantly younger and more likely to wear full helmets than their non-lane splitting counterparts. How much of the reduction in injury is a result of the situational differences between a lane splitting crash and a non lane splitting crash vs the younger people taking better hits with better protective gear? I skimmed it best I could to see if they controlled for it and they mention some differences in demographics but didn't see anything specific. Im here from your more LGBT focused vids and I'm not a rider. Never intend on being one outside of maybe a track setting if I had the chance. But as long as motorcycles are street legal at all it seems to me there's little reason to prevent riders from lane splitting. It's mostly their risk anyway, more power to ya.

"This study is not without limitations. The primary limitation is our lack of exposure data. To estimate how the risk of being involved in a collision changes when motorcyclists chose to lanesplit, we would require information on both the lane-splitting and non-lane-splitting riding that is done by some identifiable sample of motorcyclists. The collection of these data is fraught with problems, and the current study did not attempt to collect such data. The current data set cannot be used to compare the collision risks for lane-splitting or non-lane-splitting riders. The data that we do have enables us only to examine the collision, personal, and injury characteristics of the riders who were involved in traffic collisions and whose collisions occurred in the study jurisdictions. " - interesting caveat listed in the study
