This was a question I got on Facebook, were a viewer asked why when his lithops went to produce a new set of leaves they were so much smaller, and why they weren’t growing. I immediately asked if they were purchased from a big box store, and he said yes! So I told him I’d seen this quite a lot, and this is my explanation of what’s happening. I was just going to post this for him, but decided to share it since I haven’t had time to make another video on this topic yet, I decided to just share this one with you all for now. 😉

Oh my gosh... thank you 🙏🏼 SO much for explaining the mystery of melting lithops!! And smaller sets of leaves in the first year of your care!! Best explanation on the interwebs 💚

Can you make more videos, but this time on Home Depot or Lowe’s Lithops? Maybe a before and after and how to nurse a sickly Lithops back to good health?

I have bunch of those from Lowe’s that have no new pair of leaves but they don’t seem dead.

Thank you so much for this video as it inadvertently helped to explain what happened to one of my Pleiospilos Nelii (fully appreciating that it's not a Lithops). I brought it home (there were 3 in the pot) and one of them just "poof" disintegrated into dust within a week of coming home and I was mortified! Thankfully, the other two are doing fine - and I plan to get some more as I love them. Gratitude and hugs from UK xoxoxox

Thank you for your videos! They’re so informative, and a way better source of info than other online articles I’ve read on lithops care. If you don’t mind, I have a couple questions: You mentioned in one of your videos that the hard and fast rule of no watering in winter isn’t the best, and that you tend to to water at least once or twice during this period, do you look for any signs to tell you when specifically? Also I have a pot of about 8 different lithops that are shedding, but it’s almost May now and they’ve been shedding since Nov-Dec. Every year (since I started with Lithops about 8 years ago) the majority of my lithop’s old leaves fail to fully dry out. Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks a lot Ashley, I got a lithops and it is potted in a DIY potting mix, that allows a lot of drainage, its been a couple of weeks and there seems to be no change. When it arrived it had almost no roots. Should I transfer it to an all perlite mix?

No "Hi guys!"? Thanks for the video. It's like you read my mind.

inhim7777777, it was just a video I made for someone specific, and the decided to make it public until I do another one! So I didn’t start with my usual “hi guys!” 😝

I was mainly joking as you could tell, although I could have read the explanation! Thanks again.

Hi Ashley.....when you say most plants need plenty of sunlight do growlights count..not much sunlight in uk...all my plants in my living room with heat around 18 - 21C and growlights. Which is why I can't seem to get my seasons or watering right. (I think)

So a very small amount of wrinkles isn't really a bad thing?
@phileofarm1

Star Buzz, nope not at all. And at certain times of the year some wrinkling is absolutely necessary for their new set of leaves to emerge in a healthy way!

Hi. I just bought lithops and i noticed that 2 lithops maybe came from 1 mother lithop. Can i separate them or not? Coz im afraid if i will separate them, they will die.. btw ur lithops looks great!.. Thanks 😊

In my experience you can separate them if they are healthy, and you know how to do it however I don't know why anyone would want to do that. Lithops are not naturally a single head 2 leafed plant. That is the way they start life, and how we usually see them being sold, but in nature they go from being one 2 leafed head to two 2 leafed heads then to 3 or 4 heads and so on. After several years a lithop has several heads. A mature multi headed plant is a lovely thing to have.

So I bought my first pot of lithops from lowes today sadly, I noticed what I believe to be spider mite(s) :( My only reaction was to unpot and wash away as much of the media as possible. They are currently drying on a paper towel. Any recommendations on treatment??? I'm new to lithops so I hope I didn't harm them by rinsing them well to get the media/bugs off.

Irieliciousness if they were mine I would mix up a diluted hydrogen peroxide solution (you can google measurements for how much to dilute it) and spray them all over to soak their roots too, or just put the solution in a bowl and dunk them and swish them around, then let them completely dry overnight before planting. Then I’d keep them away from my other plants a bit if possible and watch them for a couple weeks to make sure I got all the bugs. But rinsing them all of with water would definitely be my first task! So great for doing that already! I’d just rinse with peroxide as an extra added protection! Hope that helps!

Ty so much for the response!!! I have them in quarantine now and will do the H2O2 soak in a bit!!! I have so many other plants I'd have a full on meltdown if they all got infected lol! I love spring but I always dread it at the same time as I know it will be bug time again :(

The more your tiny oily fingers touch the plant should be mentioned. Look lady, dont touch.
