If I can just make it a weekend hobby as I've heard. If it can pay for itself I'll be happy. I've learned so much from you about boas and burms. I thank you for all the amazing information.

Absolutely possible with a small group of snakes. And thank you. Video I’m gonna make soon is how to make the amount of money that you want to make. If that’s 10,000 versus 100,000 versus 1 million. Those are three different scenarios with three different approaches

@@JasonsExoticReptiles Can you help me clarify something? Morphmarket just confused the crap outta me. Is a blackberry a motley leopard (eclipse) or is it missing something?

I love these types of series! I'm knee deep in my 1st season, 3 clutches hatched (25 babies), #4 in the incubator, and 5&6 coming in the next month! It is so exciting! I've wanted to do this for so long and finally just jumped in, I have big plans for some of the morphs I want to work with, but I started with some pretty basic morphs. I wanted to make sure that reality matched up with my dream, make sure this is something I "can" and "want" to do long term, and it seems to be. Also I want to build it, anything a make will go to adding my ideal morphs. I know I'm not going to get rich but want it to be a business. Now I just got to figure out how to really sell them, with the thousands of competing breeders that my real hurdle. I've got the morph market and plan to do shows so fingers crossed

Two ways to start a snake business one is snake removal business where you can remove wild snakes from other people's houses or property the second is captive breeding snakes to create new designer morphs from genetic meaning you can do alot more with snakes

Isn't snake breeding for the most part a passive income business? Doesn't require much work (at first) but as the business grows then you can hire a part time individual to take care of feeding, cleaning, temp checks, etc. Then you can jump in where needed such as marketing, distribution, or even starting another LLC. Thoughts?
@JasonsExoticReptiles
@JasonsExoticReptiles 2 года назад
I think it depends a lot on size and scale. A lot of people get into the reptile hobby/business and think that they can have six animals and retire. If you want to turn into an actual business that is generating notable income, you’re going to have 100+ animals. At that point, it is almost a full-time or at least a half time job cleaning, feeding, checking on things Etc. So you are correct, it doesn’t require much work per animal, but as you grow the work increases just like anything else. That’s before you even attempt to market and sell and respond to emails. Which is a whole other set of work. You can’t just make baby snakes and post them up hoping that they’re going to sell.

For me, at least right now I would like to eventually give it a go but mostly as a way to further my involvement and interaction with these animals in the hobby as a whole My passion is less about any specific morph (although I know what I like for boa imperators for sure) Mostly it's to work with a few different species that I think make amazing pet snakes that I would love to share with others Boa imperators Dumerils boas And Sumatran short tail pythons It's been difficult to get a working pair of all 3. I unfortunately had to put down my favorite boa imperator who was going to be part of a potential future project. she had an eight-month battle with a nasty respiratory infection and finally just didn't have the energy to keep fighting. This I think unfortunately was a lesson in never obtaining animals from a reptile shop again. I don't necessarily blame the seller as she appeared to be in good health when I got her, but I think she had minor signs of the sickness that I just wasn't picking up. I like the guy who runs the shop, and as far as animals go he knows his stuff, but I think there is likely not an effective quarantine procedure Dumerils boas I've only ever had males. One of which was sold to me as a female. The animal was in the shed and skittish so I didn't give it a thorough enough inspection to blatantly realize it was a male. Ultimately my breeding age male has ended up with another breeder right across state lines. As such he's always going to make sure that I have a priority for acquiring some of his offspring if I choose Sumatrans however I've got a great pair. other than that I have a blood python that I have no plans for and an Argentine boa who is strictly a dream animal of mine to be a pet. But my first priority is really just dialing down my focus with this collection and keeping it manageable. At that point it will be years before I raise these animals to a healthy age in size to breed and then I can decide if I really want to do it at all Anyway that's my long post because I like to talk about all my snakes, I continue to appreciate your content my man! I think you do a lot of service to the hobby and you are the best source of information for anybody looking into keeping boas or Burmese pythons

I mean zero disrespect with this before I became disabled I owned and ran a successful design and remodel business since I have recovered I have started a reptile business and in my honest opinion the design and remodel business was way harder and what I mean harder it was in a completely different area code you can't even compare the two so in my opinion it's pretty darn easy to start a reptile business

Follow up going to go over the dark side? Passion isn't enough for long term success because you also have to be able to deal with culling. For disease, for incurable parasites, for birth defects, for adults you spent years bringing up that frequently throw sickly babies (don't be the bad breeder that just changes pairs, get it out of the line). I took every precaution imaginable, and my very first animal, crypto positive. Took a year and a half for her to test positive, but she was likely infected before I got her or right when I first got her due to a rodent shortage (had to get from a pet store). I had to choose, kill her and become a breeder in a few years, hide her and infect thousands of other animals, or keep her alive, give up breeding and focus on creating better medical care for all snakes. I chose the final one because she is my pet, and there are extra obligations there. If I had been doing this as a business, I would have had to have chosen the first, and she would be gone even though she has never been sick from the infection. I really think people should start as hobby and then transition to business if they find they can stomach it. I'm not completely out of the game though, I am very lucky to have friends that are new breeders, and I get to help them, even if my own animal is in permanent high level quarantine. The thing is, my friends encounter diseases like this way more frequently than anyone would care to admit, and we have to put the incurable cases down, there is no other way because the worst thing a breeder can do is spread a deadly disease and unfortunately, deadly diseases in reptiles can take a couple of years to kill. You can do everything right and in the blink of the eye, loose everything. Sure, careful handling of the animals minimizes the risk, but the risk is never 0.

You are absolutely right. There are a lot of negative aspect of breeding. Not just for reptiles but for everything. I can’t stress enough how important it is to purchase from reputable people with a healthy and not just people with a reputation. I’ll throw myself in the mix of these reputable people to buy from as I take many precautions, have a small collection, rarely take risks unless it’s necessary, and think about the health of both my collection and my customers. I know So many “well know top tier breeders” who will sell their sick animals to unknowing people just to make a few bucks.
