I believe that any new player coming into Overwatch 2 is having an disproportionally hard time to learn the game. It sometimes almost feels impossible. And the guides that are currently available on RU-vid at least, feel very disconnected from the new player experience.

I used to be in plat until rank reset now I’m in gold & im the opposite I ult track always use cover but my aim isn’t consistent, there’s times where I dominate as echo/soujurn/tracer & get 6/10 games won then I have games where tank can’t counter switch or doesn’t know what Natural cover/highground works. If it’s not that it’s a dps Moi. Then there’s the game where I can’t get a kill for my life. Once that happens I get off & give it an hour before I go back. @carston855
@carston855 14 дней назад
I've paid for coaching before cause the game felt so overwhelming to learn. Some really good advice my coach gave was to review your gameplay and pick one thing that you want to improve on. Literally can be anything, even the smallest thing like how you strafe or your pathing through the map. Focus on that one thing for about a week or 2 and otherwise play the game as you normally would. That thing will then feel normal and you wont have to think about it anymore so you can focus on something else. With a hero like Sombra for example I would check the replay and find out every ability and ultimate that is hackable and then spend a week just focusing on getting good hacks, like disabling mercy rez, junkrat ultimate, moira ultimate etc. I lost many games trying to find the perfect timing and such but the stuff I learned was totally worth it. Something you also may not realize is that Sombra is a high gamesense hero meaning you need to understand the game really well to get full value out of her kit. You need to know how all the abilities in the game interact with each other to get the good hacks off. Beginners might have an easier time with a simpler hero like Soldier or Cassidy where the game will feel more like CS or Call of duty. Lastly the game has thresholds in ranks where the game will play wildly differently and you have to pretty much relearn the game cause what you learned in that low rank wont work in the higher rank anymore. This causes a massive disconnect between game understanding for high and low rank players. For example Cassidy was the first hero I learned to play and I would always flank with him and wipe the whole enemy team with his ultimate, that completely stopped working at Plat 5 so I had to learn other ways to get value with his ult, like use it to zone out enemy ults and get value without even killing anything. In summary, its a slow process and you need to put lots of time into the game to get anywhere, keep playing the game only if you are having fun at whatever rank you are at.
@Mykho
@Mykho 13 дней назад
That's what I recommend as well to improve. Just a couple things at a time and eventually it'll become habit. Habits build on top of each other and create your own playstyle. I do know that Sombra is a high gamesense hero. I don't feel like I need high mechanical skill with her, but I do need to mindgame the enemies and know where and who to pick off, things like that. Maybe I should just really go back to the basics to the time where I tracked everything in a excel sheet...

Heya! As a veteran player of this game, I am always interested to know about new playes prespective and experience with the game I love. And guess what? I've been begging for better in-game tutorials/ability explainations on how heroes work or are supposed to be played for years. Since I mostly play a bunch of heroes, let's say I'm tired of that and wanna play something different, but on a starting level of knowledge so it doesn't look like I'm throwing and get called out for that (in quickplay, as sad as it is). Some content creators and youtubers do bring on the table short and useful videos in which they explain how to play around enemies and they abilities with a set hero and in all kind of match-ups. (Niandra, KarQ), but the kind of brief and perfect explaination you just did in the end of this one is exactly what's missing both in and out of the game. (You should make more and call it a series, not joking.) In brief: thank you. I just wish the OW team was less focused on greedy monetization and would make this game more new-user friendly, which I personally think is the only thing that's gonna save this game's life in the long term. Ow is almost 10 years old, now, an entire new generation of gamers is hitting the game as we speak or will in the next couple of years. Not the cool skins, not the lore, not the collabs or sick cinematic: polish the new user experience is what they need to avoid the void. But I'm sure OW devs have bigger brains than me working on this, I'm sure they're aware and the issue is somewhere else, in the chain. Let's hope for the best possible future :)
@Mykho
@Mykho 14 дней назад
YES! Exactly what you're saying is what I was thinking! That's the whole reason I made this video. If Overwatch 2 wants to attract more players, make the game accessible. But it just isn't. What we need as a community is a central hub with all the required information in order to not look like a throwing monkey because I'm trying out Pharah for example. I'm not sure what they're doing at Blizzard. But the last few updates really and the release of Venture is really a step in the good direction.

Something people forget, trying to learn the fundamentals if you are new to fps or even overwatch os difficult because you play against other bad players. Learning to use cover is extremely easy and highly effective, but its one of the hardeat things for bronzes to learn. Why? Because ppl in bronze dont hit enough shots, so if your standing out in the open, you dont get punished, at least not consistently. The amount of times i made misyakes when i was hardsruck bronze and i didnt have a clue they were mistakes, because i rarely got punished, or i couldnt see a correlation between my mistake and the result due to the result being inconsistent. Its the thing that kept me in bronze for the longest time. I actually believed i deserved plat, and went so far to prove it that i created an alt account and did my best to get the highest ranked placememts i could (this was like season 4). I got placed plat 5 and got quite literally obliterated, game after game 2/12, 1k damage. For some reason i got the luckest games ever and i was able to maintain a stable gold 3 (my team hardcaried while i played die out of spawn simulator) for a solid 20 more games. My ego was crushed, i knew i deserved bronze, and i made it my goal to try and do something in these gold games to improve. I naturally started using cover to avoid damage, i saved my dash to escape (im was and am a genji one trick), i stopped making the same stupid plays (since they weremt rewarding me) and stated experimenting with new things. My games started looking more like 7/13 at 3.5k damage, then more like 12/14 at 4.8k damage. Still throwing for my rank, but i was improving. I got sick of my alt account and went back to bronze 5 on my main and climbed to silver in 3 days (i already had 200 hours on genji and was hardstuck bronze). I learned that whatever rank i was in, i deserved it, stopped blaming teamates started learning what i could to improve my gameplay and i am proud to say that a month ago i hit plat for the first time ever (one tricking genji). Its not amazing, but i struggle a lot with competitive games so this is a big win for me. But like i said, the feedback loop is broken in low ranks and it makes it very hard to learn proper play.
@Mykho
@Mykho 12 дней назад
Good story. It is a fair point. After a while of playing in a certain rank, bad habits build up and it gets increasingly hard to improve because a good habit might actually be 2 good habits that build on top of each other. Like in your example, learning to shoot well from cover requires to first get good cover, then practicing shots from that angle without budging EVEN if there's no punishment for running like you're in CoD. You did a good job realising your own improvement mindset! The gap between bronze 5 and silver 3 is probably a lot bigger than people think. Not just in mechanics and game knowledge, but more so in mentality.

One of the best Overwatch features that got axed was "prefer this player". I used to add high rank players to this list whenever I get them in my QP games, and I enjoyed every moment of getting punished for poor positioning. I learned way more from QP games like this than any of my ranked matches (2300~2600SR, approx Gold 1 ~ Plat 5 in OW2) I've been watching OW content creators since 2017, and I think it was only 3 years ago LHCloudy who said "don't trust your team, don't trust your Ana, even don't trust your shield. walls and corners are your best friends, love them, hug them, they will never fail your trust" 😅

In the example of "Sombra does 160 dps, but I don't know how much health each hero has," can be easily solved by taking a few minutes to load into the Practice Range and look. While tanks have -175 HP outside of QP and Comp Role Queue, you can see that almost every non-tank hero in the game has 250 HP, with a few exceptions. I don't think creators bear the responsibility of giving you this information. It is all very accessible, like on the Overwatch Wiki. Imagine how horribly tedious it would be for every single video to list out these extremely basic things when people can just look at the Overwatch Wiki. I think creators should maybe mention that the wiki exists, but they are not burdened to make their videos substantially worse to accommodate people who don't want to do a modicum of research.
@Mykho
@Mykho 14 дней назад
You have a fair point. There would be no point in watching if every video said something basic like “the robot stops pushing for a few seconds after reaching the forward spawn point”. That one was more targeted towards beginners. But what about other things that we take for granted though? I didn’t even know the practice range was a thing, or that you could go into the practice range during queue until a friend just started it up so naturally. I’m so used to just sit and wait for a couple of minutes until the game starts. I just wish it was slightly easier to do research for specific questions things. Let’s say I want to know how to play with reinhardt on 1st point paraiso. Where do I even begin looking? Sure, there’s a 30 minute video from Spilo. And at 3 minutes there he explains it. But these videos are not accessible at all for a beginner. And I would love to say that it’s super easy to go into a custom and load any map. It’s not unless you know what buttons to press.
@kasm7870
@kasm7870 14 дней назад
@@Mykho Well, what would your solution be to learning how to play Reinhardt on Paraiso? Overwatch makes heroes with a playstyle in mind, but they do not REQUIRE the hero to played that way. Can Winston technically be used to hold chokepoints by using bubble and standing there like a Reinhardt? Yes - he can, nothing is stopping you. Is that the recommended way to play Winston? No. The part of Overwatch that's so great is that you play in a way that you feel will work. You take what you are given in a Hero's kit (which should be explained a bit better in-game) and YOU decide how to implement that to your advantage. Getting pointers on positioning helps, but for the most part, in Overwatch 2, positioning is the same as it is in many other FPS games, with the exception of tanks and some Supports. If you fail when trying something new, then try something new. Maybe playing like you're Ashe when you're on Genji isn't the best choice, maybe try getting more aggressive after you lost that game. I'm not against making the game easier to learn, I just don't think hand-holding is the way to do it.
@Mykho
@Mykho 14 дней назад
@kasm7870 I’d probably try a bunch of things. Like fighting in the small building under the corner bridge thing. Walking up the high ground with team. Walking up the other high ground maybe? Who knows? The thing is that sometimes I get so overwhelmed with the information that I just don’t know what my options are. For me at least, a lot of these fps concepts don’t come to me naturally. Maybe I’m just not good on fps games. I think that the improvement loop that you’re describing is trial & error. But with a little bit of input, the trial & error would feel a lot better imo. Even if a guide tells me 100% how to fight that point with that specific hero. It still might not work. Too many factors at play. I just want to get more options to me in my head. An example would be when I saw a long coaching video on watchpoint gibraltar, where they proposed to walk up the stairs inside the building to contest high ground. I literally didn’t even think of that being something that you could do.

Started 2 months or so before ow2, maybe 40-50 hours total of playtime. And now, season 10 peaked top 98 and gm5 (season 8) with 700 hours. One thing I’d say to improve, is just watch better players. Don’t watch only one person or one hero, watch a variety. Every player and hero has a different play style, also copying the things that only one player does can be less beneficial than just playing normally. Make sure to mix up how and who you play. (Yes one-tricks, I’m looking at you.) If mechanics are your problem, simply warm up 15-30 minutes a day in an in-game workshop aim trainer. Of course, my main tip is just enjoy playing the game! Play with friends, play with music in the background etc. don’t rage queue, or continue playing if you aren’t having fun.

I think I understand the point you're trying to get across but, and do correct me if Im wrong, I feel like you're expecting to get everything spoon fed to you which I believe goes against the purpose of playing a game. For example, you talk about not realizing that reaper's shotguns had a fall off range of 25 meters which is understandable i never knew that either, but I think it is common intuition to think that the farther away you are from a shotgun character the less effective they will be. Another thing, you said you never knew that sombra was a decent midrange character until you saw someone saying that however, I feel like you should have learned this by playing the game itself. A lot of the problems you mentioned could just be solved by playing the game and rewatching your vods to see where you went wrong. Everything comes with practice and play time there isn't a cheat code to instantly get a higher rank, you have to grow and learn as you play the game. The game also helps you do this by putting you in matches with people of similar rank so it isn't like you're facing grandmasters. All in all I just feel like this is less of a video about how overwatch is impossible to learn but more like a video about how the information isn't given to you on a sliver platter.

@coolsleeper9348 the thing is that time is limited and I personally don't feel like spending too much time analysing when I sometimes don't even know what I'm analysing. And sure, playtime + practice = more skill in general. What I don't like, but I mean hate, is that every now then a roll happens. Or I lose just barely. And looking back in my own VOD. I can see things here and there, mistakes and whatnot. I just want to know more possibilities that others have already found. I don't want to mull over things that long-time players figured out a couple of years ago. Like you said, I want answers on a silver platter. But that doesn't mean that I can immediately apply it in-game. Even then, it'll take time and effort. Also I watched Kajor, and while I personally like his videos. They helped me tremendously. If someone new came into Overwatch I wouldn't recommend Kajor. Too much irrelevant information for a noob.

I think you really nailed it by bringing up chaos theory, to know how exactly to play in a given situation you need to know all parameters or general advice can be completely incorrect in a given situation, and it takes a long time to even recognize those parameters in game, especially if you don't use guides, let alone how to react to them. This is probably why video reviews are so common, as the reviewer does have access to all the variables and can explain what they are and what they mean, and over time viewers learn the most common patterns of similar advice that improve their play even if they don't do it perfectly.
@wellplayed6061
@wellplayed6061 4 дня назад
As an example the most common advice given to players is to 'take high ground'. Positioning your character at a higher position on the map means you can headshot easier while being harder to headshot, can use the ground as partial cover to be even more difficult to shoot, and anyone who wants to get close to you has to spend a long time going around which also often gives you more time to shoot them, or use a mobility ability they now can't use in the fight against you, giving you an edge.
@Mykho
@Mykho 4 дня назад
Yeah everything is extremely chaotic. I’m guessing that it’s just content creators being too long in the scene and now they can’t relate to newer players anymore. What you said about high ground is something that’s commonly said in positioning guides as well, and it’s true, but sometimes I just don’t figure out a way to get to said high ground unless I do research or walk around the map in customs. I’d like to just be able to find that more easily somehow.

I remember when I was trying to learn OW in 2020 and it seemed like the guides couldn't help me so much. My game sense was still trash and sometimes I couldn't understand why everyone around me was dying if I was healing them. It turned out that it was their own fault for not using abilities and playing braindead 😂 These things come with time, but with the addition of new characters, new passives, the increased importance of individual play and faster pace, it's no wonder someone could find it confusing and frustrating.

There's still lots of people out there, thinking that healbotting will help. To them I say; wrong game, bud. You'd also be surprised by how many people just click off because they don't understand why they just died for the 5th time against a flying angry man (sigma ult).

I'm a masters player, and have been playing since 2018. Alot of hero guides are really difficult because of how complex and diverse every interaction with every hero is. an example being If your playing dive your target is an Ana, but if they have a brig ana it changes to brig because its faster to kill her. Those interactions come with time of just trying new things. like i've said i've been playing for 6 years and am still learning different interactions because I've never had to interact with them before (and the roster is growing every 2 seasons). Improvement comes from the fundamentals. Corners, Angles, Space, and Timing are the only true ways to climb and improve (Its why people can do the unranked to gm on new characters the day they come out) I'd recommend A10 If you want to improve really fast, as he's my personal favorite streamer/ youtuber who has some of the best guides I've watched that helped me climb out of Diamond

The lack of information availability is an issue I've noticed in numerous games as of the last decade or so. It's difficult to teach a new player when they have to jump through numerous hoops to find the information. Like another game I've seen it in is a personal favorite, Warframe. One of the characters is essentially an interdimensional magician who can move himself, enemies and even allies between two different dimensions... With or without the other player's consent. When within that other dimension, that player cannot interact with any terminals or get kills on anything that isn't also in that same dimension, and this can be a massive issue if the player using the character doesn't know what they're doing, or does know what they're doing, and are trolling with it. Players can leave that dimension by just dodge rolling, and it pulls them out, but the game makes absolutely no mention of that anywhere in-game, neither do pretty much any character guides mention it at all. Players literally have to go to that specific character's wiki page and scour the ability page to learn that. **You'd think something that important would be something that should be communicated!...*
@Mykho
@Mykho 12 дней назад
Eventually some sort of singularity will form and only the players with at least 10000 hours into a game are allowed to get into silver games. No but for real, I remember warframe omg. It's still up and running? I played it when there were only a handful of warframes and we were all just running around like space genji would. Good times, got bored of it though because there were only maybe like 5 different missions.

The biggest problem OW has is the mentality of too many players - “I’m just vibin’”, “it’s just QP”, “ur sweaty” etc. and a report system too open to abuse by stacks of children who think ANY input is an attack and mass report anyone who dares ask for a swap or better play no matter how politely asked. Too many players in a competitive game (even QP is a competitive game) who have no business in a FPS in the first place… and it’s not just QP, too many in comp who play it like QP and admit it. They don’t even bother to watch ONE video on how a character even works… or relative damage, so we see DVAs walking back and forth mindlessly shooting Reins shield for minutes on end hoping for one ultimate… the game SO desperately needs a clan system it’s ridiculous…. Then worst of all THEY complain the game is “bad” because THEY won’t put any effort into understanding it…

Damn, got any advice as to what fundementals are in Overwatch?
@Ahrone1586
@Ahrone1586 12 дней назад
Well there are better ppl to explain this and im not native speaker of englisj but i will try. The fundamentals basically are the simple replicable things what works in mos cases. Let me tell you a otp lucio who knows all about his champ and is a god mechabically can be stuck in diamond, and some random gm can pick the champ a put it in gm without any of the superior mechanical skills of the otp. So fundamentals in the very basic are: 1- Cobert, a good player is rarely in the open space, this is for every hero in the game. 2-Off Angles and highground, is amazing how you can simply re direct half the potential dmg of the enemy team to you just by taking distance of your team (thats why in my elo ppl are generally pretty independent, the game is less about team when you climb and more about individual performance). 3-Your up time, your dmg input in the game its a must be. You have to constantly doing dmg and searching oprotunities to do it. This is the most complex of the fundamentals bc requieres certain experience. But the basic rule is: they go foward, i go back. They go back, i go forward. Simple phrase but in his core is about capitalizing advantages (for example when you got a pick). As id said im not an expert about teaching this, i got this by watching A10, ackward ans others. Implementing in my play style their teachings. If you can replicate you can success, so you have to understand the simple after you can go to (less important) complext things. I hope it helps you, i said im an otp dva, but i manage to put all roles in gm with multiples heroes and accounts, just bc i understood how this game is played. Personal advice: 80% of what ppl think about the game is bs, they talk a lot about counters, comps, combos, etc. None of that will make you climb man, my first months in the game i listened to them and i was middle rank.

Another thing that hurts the average and new players is that so many characters’ “best” or rather easiest control layout isn’t even set by default like sombra having a camera lock off to by default. Another issue most of the older RU-vidrs made is hero guides made back in overwatch 1 are the only sources of info they have on RU-vid, most explain new heroes with patch notes or in vods that don’t always appear when you’re just looking for information on just the hero. As for learning a new character you’re usually relegated to a RU-vidr who one tricks the hero so if you’re lucky they’ll either give all the information from the ground up and why. Or have already expected you to have played the hero for 100+ hours and only share advanced techs. I’d say sombra is kinda lucky in that respect tho because of questron, though I find it difficult to keep up with him since a lot of his tips happen in stream…

i started playing overwatch in october of 2022 - i.e. the month overwatch 2 was released and became free to play. my only previous experience with shooters beforehand was playing pixel shooter on my little brother's phone. to say i was going in blind is an understatement. however, nearly two years later, i've been consistently at high gold and peaking plat across almost all roles (tank, support, open queue where i one trick ball), and i feel like i know a decent amount of things about the game. i'm not sure exactly how that happened, but i can mention some of the things that had a hand in helping me: 1) spending the first couple of hundred hours focusing on improving my mechanical skills - mostly by just playing a LOT of soldier 76 - and familiarizing myself with the maps and their objectives SOLELY in unranked, where my inexperience didn't matter. 2) believe it or not, being unnaturally dedicated to playing mystery heroes - both the unranked and competitve version - was probably one of the most helpful factors in teaching me how to play each and every hero. it discouraged me from sticking with comfort picks while forcing me to learn ones i otherwise wouldn't have glanced at, while ALSO keeping everyone else on the same ground. 3) watching (certain) OW content creators on youtube. NOT the unranked to GM bullshit, but rather their normal gameplay. obviously Top 500 gameplay is nowhere near the one found in gold lobbies, but there are plenty of useful stuff you DO learn. ml7's positioning and angles, the way kenzo aims, fitzy's sombra gameplay improving mine tenfold, even frogger's silly videos have taught me the way i used lucio as a healbot was wrong and that being aggressive helps my team much more. 4) similarly, those niche 'Overwatch Facts You Didn't Know!' usually have obscure tips and tricks you don't find in normal guides. 5) last but not least, and the one thing i know not everyone can do: spending way too much time playing the game gold isn't very impressive, i know, but it is impressive how much knowledge i've gained about the game's basics in the time i've been playing it. never before would i have thought that i would know, much less understand, what things like 'ult economy', 'game sense', 'regrouping', 'counters', etc even mean. however, one (of the many) thing(s) i feel like the dev team should have done was make Hero Mastery more about, you know, actually MASTERING the hero instead of a glorified speedrun, and had it released with OW2, when the influx of new players might have actually had some use from it.

That's a cool journey. I did the same (although a lot less hours) with Mercy. I didn't learn mechanics. But rather game flow and who and what can kill me and how. I like the game, but not enough to scour through hours and hours of footage to find specific usable tips. Mystery heroes is funny, but I don't enjoy it sadly enough. Going from playing Ashe to suddenly Junker Queen is just such a crazy shift. That's a cool perspective though. Advertising mystery heroes WAY more, just to help all the new OW2 players out when the game released.

Thank you! Huge inspiration to just hear this. Not a question for me, but my comp partner who mains D.Va. I believe he doesn't know enough options or how to dive supports properly. There was a time where Mercy got from him all the time. I think that he could be diving, and then positioning himself like a winston to apply pressure. And even though that might leave his team vulnerable for a little while, he might just get enough distraction or even enough solo kills to turn the fight by himself. He's sometimes just scared of his team dying without him being there and getting the blame for it. What to do in this case? And yes, I'm being a hypocrite and asking for guidelines here lmao
@St8_Angel
@St8_Angel 12 дней назад
@Mykho no its fine generally dive is a very all in playstyle and you really need your whole team to go in to get picks (this applies more in higher ranks). With dva specifically her matrix is very good to help push up and make space aswell as protecting teammates and you can dive by trying to burst them down with missles boosters and primary fire but with the updated health pools she needs some kind of follow up especially if the other support is healing her. It can be quite hard because alot of the times when dva dives the whole enemy team will turn and shoot at her so make sure that you have resources left to try and bail yourself out. Dva is good at killing Isolated enemies quite well and she can absorb enemy projectile healing with matrix making it hard for characters like Ana to get value. As you climb tank is probably the hardest role as you need to have a understanding to play most tanks in any situation because how important counterswaping has become. Playing dva into like a mauga for example isn't impossible but it will likely be a uphill battle the whole game

When you press the *ability,* you need to *press jump just before you get to the end of the hook,* to send yourself *further into the air* if done *correctly.* It doesn't end there! With that in mind, adding the rest. As soon as you *hook,* you need to be *placing* the *UNscoped crosshair* in the *direction the enemy will be while you go up the hook.* This bit is where you'll be *instinctively pressing the jump button just before* you reach the *end of the hook* to *launch yourself into the sky,* since you won't be able to see how far along you've went up it, because you'll now be *scoping into the gun to take the shot with the air time you have.* Last and final part. The shot. Depending on how you are moving in the air, and how the enemy is moving or not. It comes back to that *Widowmaker decision,* of whether this is a *flick shot situation,* a *tracking shot situation,* or waiting for the enemy to *move into the crosshair situation.* The hero requires a lot of time, practice, and muscle memory to master overall. Custom code "VAXTA" helped me with my aim! And that's everything! (sorry about the humongous book BTW!)

More people need to look at Awkward's unranked to GM series with a critical eye. That series ruins any low rated player it touches. "How to rank up as Bap is ignore your team, don't heal them until half health and, do damage, and use wall for yourself" The average silver player doesn't have the aim to make their most effective attribute their damage, they aren't tracking their team well enough to reactively heal players they've let get low, and can't either identify an excellent wall angle or clutch up on aim enough to make it more valuable than letting your DPS shoot through it. If they could do that, THEY WOULDN'T BE BRONZE OR SILVER. Brother at this point just go play DPS. You're not ranking up as a support anymore, you're ranking up as Bap76. If you can't keep a bronze team healed while taking a moment to focus down value targets with your aim, you're exactly at the rank you deserve to be. I absolutely hate Awkward's content.
@Mykho
@Mykho 12 дней назад
Hey tbf, that specific series helped me improve on Baptiste. Although yes it is a very selfish playstyle. Now I'm relearning because I can't get enough value doing that manner of playing. I don't have the aim and gamesense to do that.
@slapmanjohn1189
@slapmanjohn1189 12 дней назад
@@Mykho That's what I'm saying. There's a very real way to say "hey don't be afraid to eek out some more damage and focus down a kill instead of healing someone at 70% HP" without literally telling an army of hardstuck bronze and silvers to totally ignore their team and to rely on aim they absolutely don't have because it works for a T500 smurf that knows every angle and how the game is paced. Most supports will need to hear that they should do more damage to rank up at some point. Nobody needs to be told to ignore their team. It misleads a LOT of players.

For the most part, the sentiment in this video is well placed. I've always been curious about how new players approach Overwatch and their perception of it. Some things I don't quite agree with like having a video explain the reaper versus sombra matchup. In the grand scheme of things, something specific like reaper having 20m range versus sombra can overload new players with information that is better off learnt through playing the game. When you fight reaper as sombra you'll learn that "oh when I get close to the reaper he does tons of damage to me." It's information that for a portion of players is useful, but can be gleaned from going through that experience of playing the game. What do you think will stick with a player more? Getting information that reaper's gun is 20m and sombra's is 35m or dying to reaper again and again to learn how to adapt to fight him. Providing general concise information to a beginner player and allowing them to experience the game without overloading them with information that they will forget anyways imo is a much better option. From there, you can provide higher level theory and strategies, things that videos are great at. However, I will admit that this style of learning might not be for everyone, and that yes, content creators should do a better job of providing useful updated information especially to new players. If I want to know what the basics of a hero are and how what their basic playstyle is, there should be a concise video that explains it. Heroes that have been out since launch have outdated guides that while still helpful, contain information that is no longer relevant for new players. What's even more important, I think, is providing new players with a macro understanding of the game. Yes, knowing how to 1v1 a reaper is useful, don't get me wrong, but knowing when to engage with emp in tempo with your team being able to followup, tracking their ults to know what counters your emp or what you can counter with emp, knowing how your team composition favors what playstyle you should play on sombra. These are all specific things for sombra that rely on a greater understanding of the game. You'll never be a great sombra, or any other hero in Overwatch for that matter, without understanding the larger game. How to express this importance to beginner players? Well that's another question entirely. Edited for spacing.
@Mykho
@Mykho 11 дней назад
You have really good points. A Sombra vs Reaper video would be too specific and not that useful to players. But luckily, I have a bunch of comments here that did exactly say what’s important! It’s always an important question to ask when there’s too much info and when there’s just enough to start letting the students learn. Also a problem that teachers in school have. For example, if you want to explain addition to toddlers, there’s no point in explaining it through formulas. You’d explain it with real life examples and whatnot. Unsure how to apply it here in Overwatch, but we can hope.

This is the thing with such a complicated game, most of it is trial and error where new players are told to (for example) position better, or all the numbers and information about the heroes they play that most players in the lower ranks either don't know or don't really bother to learn themselves and just want to shoot at the next moving thing in front of them. Hell, I recently found out that Moira has a lifesteal to her secondary fire and it's an example of the trial an error I mentioned already, there really isn't much in the game itself that tells you about these little things to a hero as simple as Moira for example. enough yapping, this is a great video that many people, like myself currently, can relate to
@Mykho

Holy damn I didn't know about Moira. I was getting a couple comments in a row saying that the point of a game is to play it and to learn it through that. @@Mykho No problem, man. your video hit the right spot, that's for sure. And those people you mentioned aren't necessarily wrong in that sense but at the same time, the intricacies of every hero aren't the most obvious thing. this is why many guide videos exist that explain such little details. But it's can also be detrimental to newer players because they can watch these guides that all come from different perspectives or just a VERY broad point of view that it hurts said new player, there really isn't a definitive guide or answer out there :/ (depending on the hero I'd say)

Think about what you really need them to know, so they can build on their skills based on that. Things like corners, or settings or other things you deem as fundamentals. Give them space and time to do their own thing and experiment. As long as they're having fun, they will improve. Also think about the format that they enjoy their information in. Some people learn really well by listening, others by seeing and others by doing. If they try to learn something, try and keep them focused on learning only a couple of things at a time until they get to a good enough point in that area. Keep in mind that if your friends don't want to learn or specifically, aren't coachable, then no one can help them. Being coachable means being open to new ideas and actually implementing them. No point in arguing with someone if they think they know something better than you. But also keep in mind that you shouldn't teach them things beyond your knowledge. I'm not gonna listen to a dentist apprentice about how I should import mango's from overseas as an example. Just generic teaching things that I learnt, might probably be wrong. Hopefully someone else can pick up where I'm lacking.

You're completely right, actually. Overwatch desperately needs new player content. Heck, I played OV 1 and recently jumped back into it and I need it as well. "Just play and you learn" doesn't really apply if the game has so many moving parts that you cannot isolate a vartiable to figure out if you do things right or wrong. I am also a working adult with a life, I simply do not have the time. This visdeo hits the nail on the head, well done.
@Mykho
@Mykho 12 дней назад
Thanks for your comment! Isolating issues is completely different and more doable in League, because you have a specific matchup that you need to beat. Usually about 10-30 depending on the role. And then the map just stays the same. The other variables are enemy teammates or the playstyle of the enemy and it's nice to pick out certain things like "oh I could've used my flash in a different way here, that was useless". But here in Overwatch, even with one-tricking there's SO MUCH variability. The game is so incredibly fast and it just delves down into a 10 player slugfest with infinite possibilities. Isolating issues is for me coming from League. Others have stated that coming from other shooters like cod or even tryhard gta5 that their transition was easier though.

HUH Hanzo storm arrows bounce once?? That's also why I made the mini-guide at the end the way I did. Unless the ability works differently, the guide won't be outdated. Maybe specific things like the more secret interactions like the small invincibility frames or the cleansing effect will be patched out or something. Who knows. The core SHOULD stay the same unless they rework. And therefore, the guide should be suitable for a while for absolute beginners. Heya! Tysm for the vid! ^^ I've been playing this game on & off since release and it's *not* easy to get into; You are right regarding the fact that there isn't a lot of 'basic knowledge' content regarding overwatch, however, content creators are also right in saying that "everything is situational": To most of the questions you pose in this video as an example, there isn't a clear cut answer since the outcome is really dependent on map, playstyle, teamwork, ability cooldowns etc... Regarding 5 minute guides & specific hero matchup videos: It would be great if those videos existed even when the solution proposed to dealing with a certain hero doesn't *always* work; Those kind of videos would take weeks, months to make (see KarQ: 1 tip for dealing with every Hero) but if you'd decide to make those videos that'd be great; I'm sure some people in the OW community would be willing to help you with that if you pokle around a bit (This includes me). Regarding videos that are Hero AND Map specific: Those videos would, again, be great, even if each individual video might not have a big target audience: I can imagine it being incredibly hard to make a video for a certain hero, explaining where and how to position while keeping in mind each possible hero the enemy might be playing in any given situation. (Which is why there are *very* few videos like that out there- I think the most 'well known' ones are for Hammond & lucio rollouts. If you are however inclined to outlining each map overall: where the health packs are, what flank routes exist, common heroes used on this map, etc... that would probably be easier or rather.. more manageable to produce & might be the type of video people new to overwatch would be looking for since, as you pointed out, there isn't much content that is actually very 'newcomer freindly'. Now matter if you choose to make videos in that direction or not at all- I hope they stay as interesting as this one! Have a nice day

No guides tell you how to learn or practice these things your always forced to learn it on your own. to be honest the only reason i could was cause of my prior experience with games like paladins tf2 cod fortnite and smash bros. So as a new player with maybe a more casual past experience i couldnt imagine the difficulty learning this stuff even now i struggle the most with enemy habits and punishing it but i still try. i completely understand your experience i wish people explained more how to learn certain things or focused more on the basics of neutral- advantage- disadvantage- game and how to use different characters and what theyre best suited for how to time shit ect ect.

from what it sounds like, most guides dont cater towards what you consider to be valuable information. I think that in general, a lot of your problems stem from the fact you expect these guides to ANSWER stuff when (i know you hate this) it really and truly is all situational. I think you have some AMAZING ideas, like a guide breaking down every hero's interaction with another at a basic level for noobs. The problem is drawing the line at where noob information stops and become intermediate/advanced knowledge. There's no way to know. But I think that a guide that inspires a little bit of thinking instead of purely info dumping would be great. The information that everyone needs is there. Yeah, 100%. I first started playing Overwatch right when I started college. I guess I started gaming IN GENERAL at that time too. It wasn't just about learning the heroes and the game, it was also about really "basic" gaming things that I just didn't know, because I had LITERALLY gone my entire life never playing a single video game, ever, other than Minecraft, which was mostly on an iPad growing up. The concepts I would say are really basic now... like... shotguns not doing damage across the map went over my head completely. I would walk right into enemy fire, not because I thought it was a good idea, but because I wasn't thinking much of it at all and I simply had no frame of reference for how I should move. I would assume defending the point meant standing slap on the objective while my team was fighting and obliviously wondering why they were leaving my squishy self to defend. 💀 I've had it for a bit now, and I'm still in mid-bronze, and not without effort. My low rank is kinda deserved, though. I can only reliably play ONE character. I believe I can play them well, but my rank reflects if my character is taken, because then I'm testing out what keys do what for a different character with negligible playtime in spawn in a comp game. I would like to learn more characters, but it's still an information overload to this day, and I'd like to get it hammered down on at least one hero before I move on.

I can't say for real what's the best or the worst about how to learn the game, since I've basically discovered by myself while playing and learning through patch notes. There is many ways get known about your character and I think that the first thing to do is: Read. Just a quick google "Overwatch 2 Sombra Skills" will do, read the Blizzard page and you'll know the basics, watch a game of someone playing sombra, and later watch a guide to understand why that youtuber played like this (Or at least try to). Its understandable how easily is to become overwhelmed with information, and the worst thing is trying to rush. If the person in question doens't understand what its was meant to do, then its worthless to explain the champion. Why to not play some games to understand what everything does and watch a guide later? Even if the scoreboard get some reds, its just normal to do so, but if "My board is 6W/12L, I wasted my time" is a thing, then I can't relate with anything, since I play for fun. (Yep, I can't stand on competitive, too much venom for my blood). Its like trying to play chess for the first time, even after watching guides, you won't be able to understand all the variables, only after playing and thinking that you'll get used to take decision.

Hey you've gotten a similar idea to mine. Play > watch guides > read up on things, do that on loop. The issue is that a lot of people don't really like reading up on things nor do they like watching extremely long guides. And in Overwatch 2, there seems to be an overwhelming amount of gameplay guides where the content creator only focuses on explaining through example while they play. It just isn't a good format for new players.

I swear this platform is listening to my conversations in the background coz I was just teaching one of my friends how to get into Overwatch 🤣 I've been a Day 1 Ow1 player so a lot of things are just second nature to me but you really opened my mind to the newer player experience. I think the reason Content Creators don't focus on the kits and jump into how to play them is because their numbers are always bound to change through buffs, nerfs and reworks so you don't need to know what it does you just need to know how to use it. Like how they reverted the armour changes where it subtracts a flat 5 damage from your total damage but if a character does less than 10 per shot, it reduces the damage by 30%. And when you get into the nitty gritty of characters, it may become too overwhelming for a new player to follow along. However, I do see the point you're making and honestly, we do need a bit more "Kit Overview" type content (like what you did at the end) to ease players in to picking up the character. Well, thats enough rambling from me, have a wonderful day my friend!
@Mykho
@Mykho 13 дней назад
It's okay, have you seen the rambling of others in this comment section? I love it here, but damn I'd be lying if I said 'that it didn't take a while to go through what everyone wants to say. The reason why I made that mini guide the way I did is because I know that unless Blizzard reworks abilities, the guide will still be relevant. The numbers do go up and down all the time, and so do tiny interactions disappear and appear sometimes. Like Junkrat's lethal 2-shot with his primary coming back last week. I hope your friend sticks around for OW2!

Lovely rant. Gave me two good chuckles with the Mercy-Roadhog + 1:55 "What do the high ranking players do then? Well, if I could tell you I wouldn't be a Gold player." 😂 Though in all honesty, I've kinda been thinking about how I could make a noob friendly guide on "How to get out of the metal ranks as a TikTok Moira". I've been a tank player in the past, and it kinda gave me a new challenge on how to carry games as Moira, and it's not very intuitive what you have to do (because the game's psychological feedback rewards immediate healing or damage). I think it could be interesting since it's would be a guide on what I actually had to do to rank up, and how to approach Moira's kit.

@chatoguy1
@chatoguy1 13 дней назад
Knowing rate of fire and dmg per second is about as equal as knowing the range of characters. These are specific things you are actively looking for to learn and get better. The reason why people don't make full guides is because it would take hours just to cover map layouts. It would take even more hours to cover 1 character for every map layout, not taking into account who you're going against which changes your play style. The reason why there will always be a gap is because people choose to not seek the information, not that the guides aren't good. The wikis cover a lot of the specific numbers of every abilities, while guides cover general knowledge. Its nearly impossible to cover every single situation without the videos being over 20+ hours.
@chatoguy1
@chatoguy1 13 дней назад
Not saying its impossible but you will still need to pour hundreds of hours into the game to fully understand the knowledge. Need the hands on practice of trial and error, recognizing patterns and reacting, and probably the most important thing is adapting. If you play about 200+ hours and read the wikis for numbers you can very well be on your journey to plat. After which you will need several more hundreds of hours. It all depends on how fast you can adapt. Also the "t500 guides" is just best practice. From experience, smurfing, all these tips can be generally ignored to a certain degree once you pick up on the patterns of low elo players. Again, adapting, I can for example adapt to a match within the first minute; the low elo players cannot adapt the entire match. Also like @simplydevon said, most people dont really care in bronze - gold, its the casual ranks and some of the hardest ranks to get out of.
@Mykho
@Mykho 13 дней назад
That's a good insight. But what if I tried looking for new ways to fight and/or approach a certain spot. Only to be dumbfounded by a sudden new route that took me a bit too long to find? It just gets frustrating. Trying to learn every map's layout and just running around, unsure if there's even anything left to be found. The part about adapting is interesting, I think I've been trying to learn that without even knowing about it.

Hey sometimes you've gotta try other things. If you want to force it with Soldier, go ahead. You need to think about overwatch like a fighting game. I mean really, think street fighter or smash bros, but 3d and 5v5. The general advice is actually good advice but if you're not familiar with the character you're using, it will be very hard to apply it because the way each character wants to go about the fundamentals is different. In these kinds of games, you need to stick with one character until they start making sense, and learning a character is also the best way to learn how to play against them. In this way, the game presents you with knowledge checks and skill checks simultaneously at a blistering pace. If you like being mentally stretched to your limit, overwatch is heaven due to the sheer amount of information you need to act on all at once, moment to moment. It's literally impossible to convey to a newcomer because the knowledge doesn't work for you until you've internalized it to the point of it becoming instinct. Just think about the number of potential team compositions in role que. It's tens of thousands, and not everyone plays each character the same way. That sort of thing can't simply be distilled and passed on. Its a numerical impossibility. You just have to put in the hours. You need to make mistakes and get good at learning from them.

The reason unranked to gms are so popular is because they get a lot of views and longform content pays off more due to algorithm changes these days, also sombras EMP deletes shields from existence, you showed in your footage it deleted the symmetra wall, it also works with things like mauga cage fight and i think regular hack can stop ults like sigma gravitic flux, little hard to do sometimes since sigma is usually high up in the air during his ult. I wish OW would just provide all the numbers in game instead of being om the wiki and stuff like that, i get new players wouldn't make much use out of it but for people that care and want that information would be nice to have it, also whenevr trying out a new char people need to check their specific control options cause some of them have stuff not turned on by default, i know backwards wallride for lucio wasn't turned on by default for a while.
@Mykho
@Mykho 15 дней назад
You’re right about longform is better because it gets pushed more to people. But at a certain point it weird to think about how the interactions you just described aren’t said anywhere. Unless you dig. And yes, I had to find a specific reddit comment that said that I could emp a symmetra ult. Not ideal. About the hero specific options, it’s such an hidden feature if you don’t know where it is. I struggled finding those settings the first time I tried to change mercy’s dash target priority.

@Mykho
@Mykho 14 дней назад
Of course, sometimes the enemy puts down a horrible ult. The logical response would be to not emp that. BUT I’m also building up muscle memory and just reacting faster to everything in general right now. So, sometimes I just instantly respond to their actions even if it isn’t ideal. Like with a sigma/mercy/moira combo where I could potentially cancel 3 heroes. I’d ult moira’s ult asap but neglect waiting 1-2 seconds in case the whole enemy team is ulting too. My long term plan for that is to first develop a reaction to the enemy’s actions. Then develop a brain that can think and decide when and where to emp/hack.

I think your video has some conflicting ideas or requests. For example you want to know things like falloff distances, bullet spreads and indepth ability knowledge, but then you even say that you don't know what to do with all that information as a new player. I think you said something about knowing Reapers falloff range, but in reality it doesn't matter. Only that if he is in your face you'll get oneshot and beyond that he tickles you. You can't get this game solved for you in a nice 5 minute highly edited video. You can learn the absolute basics that way, but I've learnt the most from those 40+ min unedited videos, because the game is complicated, you need to take the time to understand the situation and the underlying problem. New players don't need this if they're just here to have fun. Higher ranked players just do everything slightly better than lower ranked players. There is not much to solve, it's just small things building up. 2:30 you described that video to have only situational tips, yet your next sentence is that you want specific situational tips? It's impossible to cover every unique situation. That's why general advice works better. I feel like you also did some of the same "mistakes" that you described others doing in your own Sombra guide section. You left out IMO pretty important parts like how EMP destroys barriers and some abilities or that the translocator cleanses you. This also gives no general goals, strength or weaknesses for Sombra on how to play her. That's what the 40+ min vod reviews are for. It's OK to not know everything instantly as efficiently as possible. It's OK to put some effort into learning and mastering something, because the game is hard.

@Wertico567 You bring out fair points. I could've seperated or specified that I'm talking about 2 types of players. One are absolute beginners who can't tell their left from right. Overwatch 2 is also just a chaotic game. So many little things happen all the time. As a player you need to figure out what's important in that chaos. Also the fact that every hero plays differently makes it a lot more difficult to build a solid foundational skillset as a player. The game also requires incredibly quick reactions in the heat of the moment. Like you said every single second matters in this game and a single mistake can lose you the match. Also i'd say movement is a VERY important factor in this game. It makes you harder to hit and improves your aim.

There is also no possibility to make such a guide for all situations in the game, which is why so many content makers do vod reviews of beginners and low-rank players. Your future understanding of all aspects of the game depends on you as a player, high sr players can only give useful advice. I wish I could judge those first videos on heroes. Can’t judge them now. But the in-game text explanation just glosses over things. First example that I know is that cassidy gets 50% damage reduction during his roll. Seems pretty crucial to me. About guides on all possible situations. No, that sounds like an impossible goal. You’re right about that. But don’t you think that most low rank players have some sort of common issues that they we all share? There could be guides like those. I just tried searching for a guide on how to punish enemy mistakes. Something that says something simple like; if a tank is pushing too far forward, just shoot him. Because the advice that I got from positioning videos is that if I can shoot a support around the corner, then go there. But maybe that’s just my bad interpretation. Maybe I’ll try asking around for vod reviews or something? And you’re right about not every old player showing great results. It would be weird if every ow1 season 1 player would be grandmaster.

I’m looking for sources that state the maximum bitrate for 1080p60fps but for some reason that’s hard to find. There’s only guidelines. What I believe is happening to others who are uploading videos is that when they record at the recommended 12-15mbps, they already compress it themselves during the recording. Maybe again during the export. I export at a higher bitrate than I recorded the footage so I know that whatever visuals I edit in won’t blur the gameplay in the background. Then a third time when youtube compresses it. So if it looks near lossless and good after export, it’ll look “ok” even after the upload. Remember that youtube may or may not limit bitrate for smaller creators as well.

I think a guide just like the sombra one you did in the video could be so cool for people trying to learn new heroes.
