Japanese Pokemon card collecting has become extremely difficult in 2023 - the sudden surge in popularity created demand which had never been seen before. And with the release of new Pokemon Scarlet and Violet cards and higher quality cards, it was no surprise to see that demand explode Internationally.
But nothing positive comes from demand - unfortunately, opportunistic resellers have been flipping Japanese Booster Boxes, extorting long-time fans and new collectors, leading to record high Single prices - especially for cards like the Miriam SAR and Iono SAR.
There's only one thing that can cool this whole thing off - supply - and that's exactly what The Pokemon Company did - despite what those resellers were telling you. So just how big of an impact did the reprint of Japanese Pokemon card sets like Clay Burst, Paradigm Trigger and VSTAR Universe have? The change in prices will shock you - so sit down as we jump into some good old fashioned Japanese Pokemon card market discussion!

Great video with lots of good information to take away as always. The made to order decision is a good step in the right direction, and hopefully they will continue to make steps in that right direction. Unfortunately I'm still not in a position to even get on the bandwagon of things like this, but it was still nice to see so many other people being able to get their hands on one. I'm hoping to see a time where every new set was easily accessible again so people, including myself, that used to enjoy collecting this hobby can get back into it again.

Great vid as usual! Almost done with my VSU set since prices dropped but gotta take a small break from collecting cuz IRL stuff + outpriced for now. Hope by the time I'm back prices aren't as crazy for some cards, but it's nice to see some stuff down in price at least.

The problem with Made To Order is this, they are only one box per customer, primarily targeting the Japanese audience/consumer. For any international buyers, you need a proxy in order to obtain the “Made To Order” box, which there’s rumors, Pokemon Center Japan is blocking proxy addresses as well. So the main audience obtaining the boxes, are the individuals who manipulated the boxes to begin with. It just shows how Japan really only cares about Japan, and when they’re the root of the price hikes in resellers, it’s a problem/conflict of interest. I assume Iono will stay $1k plus, I assume boxes may get cheaper but eventually turn a leaf and go back up, but damn. The made to order “reprint” is honestly just to save face in my opinion. Reminds me a lot like the tiny Eevee heroes “reprint” they did when International buyers were mad about not obtaining it, but the reprint lasted all of a week, and the chase cards went down like 10% for a month and shot back up to new highs right after.

Those rumours are unsubstantiated, losing a lottery doesn't mean an address is blocked. I'm honestly surprised you have an issue with the made to order setup - a lot of people were able to land a box with this arrangement, who now are less likely to buy off the secondary market. Even if the reprint was just to save face, it's a positive sign of things to come - because every time it happens, prices across the board for those sets cool down - as evidenced in this vid. Do I want the situation in Japan to be better, between distribution and stores; with backdooring and middle-men cut out entirely? Of course, that's pretty obvious. But I'm not gonna look a gift horse in the mouth, especially when I'm not even the target market. Life is about taking the little wins wherever you can, and this is one of them!

@@okJLUV I feel you, I personally don’t have an issue with the Made To Order, I just think it’s lesser of a fix, more so a short term band-aid on a bigger issue. Especially when the primary market being effected by the negative side of this is international buyers, the average Japanese consumer, etc. All who may not have the best opportunity at this. It’s just another instance of them saving face for me. I agree that it’s good, and I’m glad you’re bringing awareness towards it. Through you showing how boxes are cheap for the time being, how they’re accessible for a period of time, not through the secondhand market, is great. But it’s ashame how the bigger issue at hand is still gonna be present post this and may likely occur again, and again. I hope people are more incentivized to not buy off the secondhand market due to this, but we’ll see. Regardless, we’ll see what happens long term with future sets that might fall victim to “over priced boxes” and “chase waifus”. What are your thoughts on it for the long term? Edit: If you see this, if the Proxy services being blocked is just a rumor or unconfirmed, that’s good.

@@DamaCollectsCards Long term, I don't see sellers getting away with the same trick twice (thrice, 4 times, 5 times??) - the made to order precedent should've spooked them, and buyers will be a little more careful this time around having seen what happened with Clay Burst. But hype is a crazy thing and often throws that logic out the window lmao. And yep, definitely a rumour - probably created by people sad they keep losing lotteries, there's a better theory but I'm gonna keep that one under my hat for now ;P

I’m thinking the hype has to pop eventually for Japanese product because people should learn that patience is key and hype to jump on everything should slow down. Idk how long that will take but definitely just watching the market and watching for restocks will help people get product for a reasonable price. And market manipulation seems to be going CRAZY right now

Market manipulation is rampant and out of control atm. As to whether the bubble will pop - honestly I doubt it. The new age of collectables being precious commodities is showing no signs of leaving, until it does, things will stay sky high

Thanks a lot for the video - although you have sort of scared me about Dream League now 😅 I have a box sitting around and probably want to sell it at some point since I have some singles already. If I understand correctly you think it’s a bit overhyped and might go down? Or was that only the Lillie card? Also interested in your opinion on the Scream promo cards. I got the Eevee, Rowlet and Psyduck and was wondering what your opinion on these promos/promos in general is. My thought process is that they are less likely to go down because they won’t get reprinted and in the case of the scream promo, they sure are pretty unique. Very interested to hear your take.

They really should be pumping honestly because they're underpriced in comparison to the English alternative. Not to mention I paid extra for most of my Japanese packs here in America that used to cost $10-$20 ea. back in 96-97-98-99 before (Jungle & Fossil for a short time, then for a longer period Team Rocket & Gym Heroes, Neo Genesis etc,) the sets were released in English, I bought when they were only available in Japanese. So I pretty much paid 2-4x the price for cards that are currently worth less than if I would have just paid $2.99 for the US version. Sucks for me. Then again the price now is much higher than it was then... so there's that. I do realize Japanese cards might be slightly more common in comparison to the English versions when you look at the entire global pool of cards, although I don't know where to find any proof of that either ... I think they should be priced about the same. In my opinion, Japanese and English should carry a price premium in comparison to other languages: Japanese because the creators are Japanese and the products were released in Japan before they were released in America, and English because... it's the language we speak in the US.

Alright Jluv how much are we expecting Charizard ex SAR going to cost in 151 set. Is Venusaur and Blastoise going to get an SAR or will they be left out like they always do. I just hope a Mew ex SAR is in the set. There are som many more ex cards than normal, so most likely that means more SAR pokemon cards than the usual 3 per set.

One thing I'd love your and anyone else's take on, is your statement either here or in the long form stream that we are in a dead time where hype is low. Yet, I'm seeing prices on nearly all of the english singles on my list go up, whether old wotc or sword and shield or sun and moon. And not even addressing full art supporters in ENG and JPN alike. I don't have an explanation, because I feel like there's not a ton of public discourse on all the prices rising while we are in a recession (depending on who you talk to) and life is super expensive.

Plaza Japan have a fairly decent price on Triplet Beat at the moment. They occasionally price gouge, but in this case, it's only a little over MSRP - worth a look, and you can generally buy with some confidence (i.e. you don't have to stress too much about fakes/resealed boxes).

I don't know if the reprint of ClayB will impact the price a crazy ton. Maybe 30% is my prediction 🤔 mostly being that Japan is only reprinting for the Japanese market, so I'm not to sure if the West will be satisfied with the quantity of it. Cuz of that, im guessing it'll make the prices eventually stay high. But I'm keen to see how it goes, tho. Hopefully, it does come down

The made to order news alone impacted the prices, Iono dropped 50000yen over 4 days once The Pokemon Company announced they were looking into the made to order setup, then another 20000yen once it was confirmed - so it'll definitely put a dent in them over the next few months. After that, I'd expect a change, but for now, things look good.

Nah, the Eevee Heroes reprints back in 2021 drove the Umbreon VMAX SA down from 60000yen to 35000yen at one point, and all other Special Arts in the set followed that drop - there hasn't been a reprint since late 2021, and the price has only surged since then.

I just think it's not worth the hassle or frustration anymore. And who is buying these cards? I guess, this is just flushing out people like me who don't appreciate the cards that much. All of the chase cards are beyond my ceiling from the get go.... the price to try and pull any of them is out of my league or patience to try and find them at better prices. If I do get a box, it is so hard to justify opening it at that point. So, I have no enjoyment out of it anymore.

I think you are missing something very important with that Altaria CHR card. This card is the pendant to the Clefairy CHR card. Both cards are not about the Pokemon but the Trainer that's paired. Clefables Trainer was Lilly, by far the most sought after Character since the beginning of this whole Waifu Hype. The Lilly Full Art Trainers got so expensive that normal people started to buy the Clefairy card at some point to get a Lilly FA card which pushed that 5$ card up to 500$ and more raw to this day! Now guess what, other CHR cards started to follow this path and right now for example the Mimikyu CHR from Dream League is blowing up because of the combination with Acerola, also a very popular character. Now imagine the Altaria getting paired with Lisia, a very inreresting character with (and that's the thing right now) nothing more than one real Full Art card ever made, and this card is the second expensive FA card from Sun & Moon after Lillie with a pricetag of 7k PSA 10 right now! The Altaria card started at below 5$ and stood there for a long time. Now people realize the potencial and pushing the price further and further to this point that we almost triple that start price right now, no end in sight (japanese ebay prices are already at 6-8x at 30-40$). Of course the Clefairy was a promo and Altaria is a way younger Set card, but it doesn't have to reach a similar insanity like the 1000$ Clefairy PSA10 does at the moment but let it be a 50$ raw card in the long term and it is still a great card to get now. Mark my words 🙏 What's also interesting is to see the not-so-much-importance of the Pokemon that's featured on a CHR card. The charizard (with Leonard) or the Gengar cards are still extremely low in price.

The history between those cards definitely plays a part, but I can assure you, the rapid surge from 300yen to 3000yen had very little to do with it, and a bit more to do with the story I explained in the video ;D the intrinsic link between Altaria CHR and Clefairy CHR should have provided a steady increase in price, not a 3 day turn around. That is extremely peculiar.

I think you're both close... For my thinking, the Altaria is now the only affordable Lisia card available, and I think it went too cheap early on (I bought dozens lol) , now though, the price has definitely been screwed with. The jump was too fast basically.

this whole market manipulation angle you're pushing doesn't make sense to me. "this card doesn't deserve to be this much", all this shit is subjective, it's just such a bad argument when no one can definitively point to why/why not a card 'deserves' to be X or Y price. you don't think it's worth that much, that's fine. there's clearly a market for people to buy and sell those cards for those prices.

difficult topic to flesh out and it probably needs its own video to fully explain what is occurring. i've got no issues with cards going up in value, that's part of collecting and as you said, very subjective, you're on the money there. i did have to kinda gloss over this point and it's a bit annoying cause yeah, it can seem like a rushed angle however, there have been a number of instances over the last 12-24 months where a card has surged in value seemingly overnight, with no real reason to. usually if a card shoots up in price, it happens gradually, and in relation to something else i.e. a card like Gardenia 070/066 (sm5s) went up in value very quickly, due to Gardenia receiving a new FA as part of Time Gazer in 2022 - cause and effect as Japanese cards are printed less than English, there is naturally less supply, so it's easier to influence the market. if a card store has enough volume, they're able to manipulate the price quickly (as they control the supply) and this is what happens - this is the manipulation i'm referring to. coupled with social media and Twitter advertising, and you very quickly see how some stores fabricate hype out of thin air - to the point that even Japanese collectors call the stores out on Twitter themselves the point of this video was to help people understand what's occurring in Japan right now, as i said, price fluctuations are a part of collecting, but i think collectors should be aware of some of the shadier things that happen and how sellers get away with it

@@okJLUV i definitely agree there is some shady shit going on revolving around buylists and these stores recognising the growing influence of foreigners on japanese card prices. i think it's just a semantics issue, would be interested to see if there are actually phantom sales occurring otherwise I think it's just japanese stores exploiting the growing western market? In which, is it then market manipulation or can they raise these prices because of the lower supply and the increased demand and extract maximum value? I think your Giratina alt art example kinda muddied the water of your larger point. Personally, I think that card is so sick, ticks all the boxes. Historically a top tier pokemon, crazy good art, chase card and the graph you showed regarding sales data reflects that. The market is just EATING it up at those prices and it's found price equilibrium. And that's where I think we disagree. Pokemon cards aren't an inelastic product like fuel or food where even if they hike the price, you still NEED to purchase it. You show these stores setting the price "high" for the full art trainer, and the sales graph shows that the market rejected it at that price so it tanked until it found it's level. So is that manipulation? Or is it FOMO? Or is it Japanese stores trying to find an items price to make the most amount of money? Maybe there's some shady shit regarding the Dream League card price pumping, but it's a 4 year old, low print, pre-COVID boom product. Is it artificial pumping or are people now realising that, like you said in the same video about picking up 'undervalued' cards with sick artwork, that these cards have some of the sickest artwork in pokemon? Huge fan of your content, watch all your videos. Always a fan of more nuanced pokemon discussion surrounding the secondary market that doesn't just shit on everyone and everything like opposum bud.
