Sermon on the Mount E8 - Why does Jesus call his followers salt and light? In the Hebrew Bible, salt is a metaphor for God’s long-lasting covenant with Israel, connected to priestly sacrifices, ritual purity, and social bonds. And the Hebrew word for light, or, shares a wordplay with torah, meaning God’s wise instruction. God’s wisdom given in the Torah is a light for Israel that they are called to share with the nations. In this episode, Jon and Tim discuss the meanings of salt and light, showing how Jesus applies these covenant words to his new community of followers.

My understanding of Salt in Matthew 5.13, is summed up in (Hebrews 10.38-39, KJV) “Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him. But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.”

Speaking on the significance of the role of a hill, I almost wanted to make a connection to 1 Chronicles when the angel of the Lord commanded that David was to "go up and build an altar to the Lord". With recently watching the Bible Project video on Chronicles and the role it plays in shedding light on the good attributes of David to point to the Messiah that is to come, and then watching this video talking about the siginficance of what the temple or city on a hill means, I cant help but create a hyperlink to the temple that David built and all of the good and order that it brought for the people in that timeframe.

Was listening to your episode on bad words, circa 2018, Avon [iniquity/wickedness, image of crooked] by violating their Covenant with GOD & giving allegiance to idols, choices or your conscience, has been bent out of shape, distorted. Jonah literally was finally sprinkling the salty instructions of GOD: Repent! The light of GOD's Word, made them change allegiance to GOD.

Thank y'all so much for this episode. Really appreciated how y'all took a step back to look at the salt/light/city parallel, and how to read it in "light" of Isaiah's writings. So helpful! Praying that the Lord would continue to empower and guide me to "be" the covenant person He desires me to be, to represent and enjoy his goodness! Keep up the great work y'all -- super excited for the rest of this series.

I work in the field (no pun intended) so I just thought you'd be interested to know: globally we spend about $2.3tn on military expenditure every year. We need investment of about $300bn per year to make our food systems provide nutritious food for all people while protecting the environment and providing good jobs. I know which I'd prefer to spend on.

Biblical Example of Salt as a preservative: So after cutting open the fish the young man gathered together the gall, heart, and liver; then he roasted and ate some of the fish, and kept some to be salted. ¶ The two continued on their way together until they were near Media. (Tobit 6:6 New Revised Standard Version of the Bible)

Example of salt that has lost its saltiness (savor) shortly after: “And he cried unto the LORD; and the LORD shewed him a tree, which when he had cast into the waters, the waters were made sweet: there he made for them a statute and an ordinance, and there he proved them, And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee. And they came to Elim, where were twelve wells of water, and threescore and ten palm trees: and they encamped there by the waters.” (Exodus 15:25-27, KJV) also notice here the tree of life! “And Moses went up unto God, and the LORD called unto him out of the mountain, saying, Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel; Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles' wings, and brought you unto myself. Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine: And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel. And Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and laid before their faces all these words which the LORD commanded him. And all the people answered together, and said, All that the LORD hath spoken we will do. And Moses returned the words of the people unto the LORD.” (Exodus 19:3-8, KJV) “And he took the book of the covenant, and read in the audience of the people: and they said, All that the LORD hath said will we do, and be obedient.” (Exodus 24:7, KJV) Read all of Exodus ch15-ch24 for context The point of Salt gone bad! “And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down out of the mount, the people gathered themselves together unto Aaron, and said unto him, Up, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.” (Exodus 32:1, KJV)

Joshuah son of Sirach explains salt here: ¶ Wisdom exalts her sons and gives help to those who seek her. Whoever loves her loves life, and those who seek her early will be filled with joy. Whoever holds her fast will obtain glory, and the Lord will bless the place she enters. Those who serve her will minister to the Holy One; the Lord loves those who love her. He who obeys her will judge the nations, and whoever gives heed to her will dwell secure. If he has faith in her he will obtain her; and his descendants will remain in possession of her. For at first she will walk with him on tortuous paths, she will bring fear and cowardice upon him, and will torment him by her discipline until she trusts him, and she will test him with her ordinances. Then she will come straight back to him and gladden him, and will reveal her secrets to him. If he goes astray she will forsake him, and hand him over to his ruin. Observe the right time, and beware of evil; and do not bring shame on yourself. For there is a shame which brings sin, and there is a shame which is glory and favor. Do not show partiality, to your own harm, or deference, to your downfall. Do not refrain from speaking at the crucial time, and do not hide your wisdom. For wisdom is known through speech, and education through the words of the tongue. Never speak against the truth, but be mindful of your ignorance. Do not be ashamed to confess your sins, and do not try to stop the current of a river. Do not subject yourself to a foolish fellow, nor show partiality to a ruler. Strive even to death for the truth and the Lord God will fight for you. (Sirach 4:11-28 RSVA)
