Why Life has Lost Meaning

Automation has reduced workload and increased leisure time dramatically. With so much leisure time, people start to wonder what their life's purpose is when previously, they are too busy working. Such a conundrum occurs if you make enough money to retire, have a pension, or even for normally retiring people. I go over a few points I learned from the book "Man's search for meaning by Viktor Frankl" so you can have a quick reference to guide you on your way to finding your own meaning in life. After all, it is different for each person.

Great Topic. I really like this quote from C.S. Lewis. “If we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world.”

Perhaps. Another explanation could be we are too intelligent for our own good

Have good relationships with family and friends. Nothing is more important than forming human connections. Having meaning in life doesn't necessarily mean you need to volunteer or help people. I think just being a kind, and caring person can be meaningful. Also, everyone is searching for meaning but infact we already have it. We are living it. Stop searching.
@BeatTheBush

Ha ha... The more you search the more it evades. Hence you find it by not searching and going out there and living life.

I think relationships, true unconditional love is the meaning of life. Finding a partner in life and raising kids has totally changed my own perspective on life. No matter how much I work, how much money I try to earn + invest, it's all for the sole purpose of buying more time back to spend with my family. Watching our kids learn new things and witnessing the joy on their faces when they do so is amazing. When I think about it, learning new things does the same thing for me too. So I think that self purpose comes from wanting to improve yourself, and the meaning comes from having someone else to share those experiences with.

I am still searching my meaning of life, but I think it would involve having experience taking care of others, such as family, friends, and treating others well....in other words empathy. I can’t tell you how gratifying it is to raise a kid. They love you unconditionally. Your family is so thankful to you because they know what it’s like. Just being there for them and knowing you are irreplaceable. That fact really makes you feel welcomed.There is so much to do always. You have to build a schedule/ be diligent. There is purpose in every step you take. Everything I do Is for the betterment of the baby.The baby needs clean clothes, bottles, house and utilities. Everyday I see the baby grow, reach new milestones or witness a first moment that won’t every be replicated. They need attention and care constantly. I love my job right now because I know one day I’ll have my own kid. I am more experienced and confident in myself.

the best I can answer the question of meaning is by looking back and reflecting on what gave me meaning until now. These are: 1. relashionships with other people ( no matter of what kind) 2. shared experiences, but also unshared ones 3. learning as much as I can about myself and others, in order to understand, therefore connect properly to others. People will always be grateful if they are seen/understood by someone. Offering undivided attention to someone, in these days, is gold.

My family relationships give life meaning to me. Also I enjoy jobs when I feel like I'm helping someone who appreciates it. I also like learning (outside of school environment) especially reading history or trying to figure out complex systems like climate and finance, trade, etc. I also love just looking at art on book covers and illustrations and things because I feel so in awe of how the artist could have the patience to draw such a detailed work of art. And other animals are amazing too like those bowerbirds that build art galleries to attract females. Or beavers building their home and dam. Huge construction projects humans make are even more shockingly amazing when you think of the group effort required. Or the new series 1883 on Paramount+. Or the series Victoria (Amazon or Netflix?). So beautiful to see the time taken to get the historical aspects as close to reality as possible including the clothing.

What I’m finding actually are people who can’t do little enough. They actually find “meaning”, as however they define it, by doing as little as possible. It can even show up in their health, because they’ve been absolutely shiftless, for so long. You mentioned the key phrase my neighbor told me last year, just before she started asking for favors: “I have all the time in the WORLD!” My feeling was, “Use it well, because I have none, so you’re not even in line, for any of it!” I have found that, if you’re a doer and are seen as a doer, you can end up working to get things done, for the non-doing, slothful, lazy and even ignorant, if you’re too nice to them. You can end up losing in life, because the name of the game and some of life’s rewards, are going towards people that are sitting comfortably in a chair, eating themselves to death, not wanting anything, but to be propped up in front of an idiot box. There are people who don’t even know why I pursue anything at all. Just go to work OR sit around waiting to go to work. Then, they wonder why they’re not interesting to you and why you don’t want to sit around, shooting the breeze with them. Well, I have personal goals, although you don’t seem to. Plus, by route of how your live, you’re uninteresting to even know. It used to be that, back in the 90s, the hot word was “entrepreneurship”. Now, if you ask people what their personal goals are, they look like a deer in headlights, because it never occurred to them to have any. I’ve seen people become jealous of me and others - for that which they DON’T EVEN WANT for themselves and don’t want to work for! But you can’t sit around and things just fall out of the sky or, worse, do nothing with your life, then decide you’ll hurl your problems onto someone else to save you from your own decisions or lack thereof - so you can continue watching TV! I, personally, have dumped people for this. We also see this on display in culture and it’s been growing for years, where the way to get ahead, is often to make a bigger clown out of yourself, than the next person. It’s at critical mass that people care less about creating a cure for Corona, than they do about the Kardashians. The reality is that all of this may lead us to what we deserve. One of the things you and many others have said, is to help other people. It’s a beautiful gesture. But, you must learn to discern, when you don’t this, because there are many people out there, who specialize in being helped… The beggar on city streets, that bay earn more than many of the people donating money to him. The neighbor, like mine, who didn’t do anything to mitigate her situation, because she felt no need to, since she could just levy my life, so she can relax into oblivion. That didn’t work out too well for her. But, you can’t find yourself being a helper rescuer and no shortage of people, who are glad to see them, because they know those people don’t have proper boundaries and they can use up their life. Sometimes, you’ll know who they are, when you don’t do what they want, because they become very angry, because they don’t like that you have boundaries they can’t blow through and even manufacture further burden. Yes, that is a reality. So, I find myself heading off and mitigating any damage that these zombies might do to my life. Another issue is technology. From my personal experience, we’ve become so accustomed to it, it’s not really that special anymore. It’s a given to have it. Worse than that is that much of it “almost works”. We’ve become a society where, as long as it worked in the ad and maybe the first week I bought it, well OK. The company that told me to be happy with that half working PoC they hurled onto the market, told me I should be happy and, besides, I want my friends to think I bought the best. Meanwhile, the broken PoC churns through my time, while I try to fix it and/or make due. I’m, personally, going through this now. I was issued a new MB Pro for work. I can’t let go of the old one, because the new one has a hard time functioning, right out of the box, often bringing my work projects to an abrupt halt. One thing is accomplished though. Lots and lots of time is wasted, making life pretty meaningless.

For people to find meaning in life, they have to search and discover their strongest meaningful talent (talents) and bring it into a society, which would reword their hard work with positive feedback. If there is no circumstantial encouragement and ones efforts don’t meet a place and get rewarded by the outside world, it is hard to form ambition and perseverance necessary for success. As a consequence so many people don’t know what their life purpose is and / or don’t know what they want to do with their lives. And a step we can take to find our life’s purpose is to take a look at our own value system.

meaning for everyone is for sure different. based on which country/family you were born in, which schools you attended, and who you grew with. But truly meaning per my understanding now is to free myself. To free myself from what I learned in this world and get my deep understanding of many processes which are going around me. Everyone around is telling how things are or are supposed to be. That's cool, but each of us needs to learn what is the right way. Most of us like little blind babies walking around and not sure what to do. But once you learn, - u'll never steal, lie, or do anything that's against being human. We have plenty of information fed into our brains each second and we are struggling to understand what is right. But when you free yourself, - u'll get deep knowledge of what is right what is not. And then humans would not need to lie anymore, because it will be obvious. But that's the perfect scenario. In the perfect world. But here we are now, and someone can take a thousand lives to make one step forward to become HUMAN.

Being outside in nature doing something exciting (and a lil dangerous) makes me so happy and joyful. Maybe it's related to what you say, ppl are so spoiled with everything handed to them. On the mountain, I'm mostly alone or a part of a team that has to be self-sufficient cause help is not coming if we F up. We carry everything we need and nothing is handed to us. It's pure suffering. Cold, altitude sickness, possible death or serious injury, crazy physical demands but I wouldn't have it any other way. Maybe u can give backpacking a try! Less suffering... There actually isn't a real meaning in life because every thought you have is literally made up. It's a hard pill to swallow but at its core, your thoughts are just that, thoughts. Your thoughts don't actually move objects, exact a change in your surroundings etc. Therefore, the only thing you can hope to achieve is fulfillment. In my opinion, the greatest fulfillment is adding to humanity, followed by assisting nature, i.e. the environment, animals and lastly self fulfillment. Self fulfillment is the most dangerous one as well.

I’m not sure I’ll be able to condense my meaning of life into a coherent RU-vid comment but I will try. For me it all starts from the premise that I exist and just to exist and be cognizant of that existence is the single most remarkable thing any of us can actually think of. I won’t go into the philosophical arguments or why I believe I both exist and am cognizant of that for sake of space. When I actually started thinking more and more about my own existence in the vastness of the universe that we know so little about I became in awe of it. To me the fact that any of us are even here is a feat of unfathomable beauty that we will never be able to comprehend. So to me at the end of the day it is simple. Just being here is a cosmic act greater than anything and it is on me to do everything I can to embrace it and not take it for granted. Everyday I wake up and tell myself to do the best I can both physically and emotionally for myself and those around me. Sounds simple I know but when you realize how phenomenal just existing is you start to shift your perspective towards doing all you can to better your life and those around you not for some arbitrary goal but for the purpose of not letting this one in a trillion chance go to waste.

I'm at a fork in the road. In one hand, I agree with you. There should be some kind of a meaning or goal that I should work towards...I would say that is the conventional path. On the other hand...why? I feel like the only reason it boils down to is because that's the "right" thing to do. The outside pressure for what is "normal" is so much more than what I actually want to do. Why can't I just go for a walk and do nothing all day? What if I don't want a family or better car or job or whatever. What's with this whole "meaning of life?" I can just...live day to day. Why does there have to be a meaning even?? Just do stuff and enjoy it.

You're both saying I need this "why," this "reason" and this goal to get to happiness. Why can't I just BE happy? Why can't I just do things that feel good? "truly lead to any sense of sustained happiness or fulfillment" I don't need anything to "lead" me to it if I'm there. It's the people who are seeking it that need to find the way- it actually seems like they're trying to get to my level (hypothetically...I'm definitely not there yet). There's the saying that people always preach about being happy with what you have. But nobody is ever satisfied with what they have. We want more. We always want more. And that's a good thing to want more (somehow?!). You can call it whatever euphemism "A life goal" "A grand ambition" "A true life meaning." They all mean the same- you want more! Why can't I just be satisfied right now?

My unc the oldest brother, he just told me my great grandmother had read the Bible all her life over and over. But the one thing she never understood was why we were asked to have such blind faith when horrible things happen to ourselves our loved ones and others. How to have faith in a good god and faith in his love in our life. That he'll never put more than we are able to handle and he will guide us with a good plan for us. Sometimes it's hard to see the good plan. But I believe God will take us wherever we are going and we can change our direction anytime life continues to carry us on. There is His mysterious will and there are all of the cloudy things of the world. I take comfort in being able to see through every illusion if I chase after it long enough to pull back the curtain. I believe that's a gift from god. But unfortunately I cannot know the deep things of God I will never be able to unveil Him in my life on Earth. I'm gonna believe in him and be foolish while I'm here. When I see Him I don't wanna be a fool then.

I don't think we as people have a set meaning we keep throughout our whole life. I think it changes. But for me, right now I'd say my meaning is to continue to travel(was working remote), create experiences, create great memories and set a good example for my family. All I can really think of. Ive learned from traveling my favorite moments in life wasnt about money, materialism or even women. It was the things I did with people I liked. Even if it was only for a few hours with some random guys in Norway. Or spending evenings with my gaming club back in the States. Now, one of the members has passed away. And the summer we spent together as a club will always be a cherish memory. When it happens you dont grasp how important it may be until you can no longer do it anymore.

As cliche as it sounds the meaning of life for me is enjoying and trying new experiences, improving my health and body, gaining more knowledge in my field, creating new bonds, becoming more sound in my mental health, loving my self more everyday and practicing gratitude everyday. It is a memento mori at the same time, we will all die one day and we need to remember that. Remembering that we all die one day is a motivation in realising to do whatever makes you happy and whatever takes you out of your comfort zone.

Well I was nominated for the Posse scholarship and now I’m looking forward to getting a degree in business management administration. And so I’ll just let the universe guide me on to fulfill my purpose in the world. Hopefully I expand my knowledge and on the way help others in the journey. Can I challenge you to do one thing? Specifically this week. Read the book of John (in the Bible). And then read the book of Ecclesiastes. You have time :). Read both of them without any presumptions. Maybe even make a RU-vid video about the process. :) Everything in this world will fade away...yet you were created for a reason and purpose! And everything will try to claim that position of purpose. But only one path with will provide true satisfaction and meaning. Would love to talk through anything if you're searching. No, this isn't religion. It's a personal relationship with Jesus. Not sure if you read every comment, but I think you might. So hopefully this connects with you. Please don't brush it off.

The book of Ecclesiastes tells of a ruler who searched for the meaning of life through having many wives, having superior wisdom, having authority over his land, and having the most riches. Yet after years of trying to find meaning in all of these material things, he concluded that all of it was "hevel" or meaningless. The book concludes by saying that true joy is not possible apart from He who is greater than yourself and everything under the sun- our Creator.

I second this. This problem of meaninglessness has existed for thousands of years, way before Nietzsche. Before automation became a thing, kings, rulers, and those with excess riches already experienced this. Man has always tried to somehow create his own meaning in life - only to grow increasingly tired of it and move on to the next thing. Some people think it's found in getting a good job. Some people think it's found in meeting the perfect soulmate. Some people think it's found in accumulating money (like some of us watching BeatTheBush's channel!). To describe this meaninglessness, the book of Ecclesiastes uses the Hebrew word "hevel", meaning a vapor of smoke. As soon as you try to grasp it - it's gone. That's because we weren't made to create our own meaning. True meaning is given, not taken. In order for there to be a calling, there must be someone who calls. That someone is God. When we truly understand that, life will be meaningful under any circumstance. =)

I think we have frustration when we think that earthly values and pleasures will fill us. They don't. Our lives here are a spiritual journey, and our soul is what is hungry, not our bank account. Well, maybe a little. I am retired and find great satisfaction in reading books or watching videos on life after death, angels, mediums, messages from other dimensions, reincarnation, past lives, our choice to be here now, and the nature of matter. Once we understand that when we break out of our "feet of clay" thinking, the universe and MEANING open up, which makes us want to learn more and more. So my pleasure is learning about out of body travels, our ability to manifest and create our reality, and how to influence what comes into our lives. Things get a lot easier when we take a different perspective.

Hello, I’ve been a fan of yours for years. Appreciate all your candidness in many videos. I hope I can add some help to this quest for meaning of life. The source of all life is God. Without God, all material things/wealth mostly do not satisfy our deeper longings for meaning/purpose, or it’s like chasing after the wind. All of us can continue to set worldly goals, achieve them, and feel a bit of satisfaction for a short while. Then we naturally feel empty again. Then we set more goals. This cycle never ends. Through worldly goals, we never experience true “Joy.” The emptiness is due to a void in our Spirits. Our Spirits were created to seek after God, and have a real relationship with his Son, Jesus Christ.

I am 60 and wonder a lot about my purpose in life. If I look over the jobs that I've had, they always involved helping others. I think that we get our thinking warped by movies thinking we will have one heroic moment when we make a difference in someone's life. But it is the thousands of times that we do the simple things that make an impact on others such as calling someone to encourage them, holding the door open for someone, giving someone a smile, or just being a good example for others to follow. People are hungry to find good in others. You are making a difference in people's lives. You may or may never know the impact that you've made. Occasionally I will have some mentioned something to me and say how what I did helped them. It is easy to get wrapped up in the question of the meaning of life. I heard it said that it can be summed up in one word, "others". Read the book Try giving yourself away.

If you look towards meaning as some goal that has to be achieved, whether it be helping the world or getting rich, you will always be building a tower of babel because you're looking at it in a linear way, with no end in sight. If you look at things in an aesthetic/circular/eastern/wholistic way, you will find beauty and meaning that is intrinsic, without the need of some higher calling or higher being. The blossom of a singular flower will be more meaningful than some grand galactic purpose. Let me phrase it another way; a game that is enjoyable only because it gives you the satisfaction of reaching its goalposts is not a good game. A movie that is only enjoyable the first time around because you're itching to see what happens is not a good movie. A game that is enjoyable upon each playthrough for the sake of the gameplay is a well designed game. A movie that is infinitely rewatchable so you can soak up each moment is a well written movie. It's not the end goal; it's the process.
@BeatTheBush

I think the true meaning of life is simply pursue that which brings you JOY. (not to be confused with pleasure). It could be helping others, improving your own self worth, or just experiencing what the world has to offer. The social stigmas of "contributing to society" is a construct and should not be a guideline for finding meaning. Our life in this world is so short, and whether you make a mark on the world or not becomes irrelevant after you're dead, so do what brings you joy.
