Christian Louboutin's trademark red-bottomed shoes have become iconic. Beyoncé wore a custom pair of boots for her Coachella performance, and Cardi B slipped on a pair of "bloody shoes" for her "Bodak Yellow" music video. But why do these heels cost hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of dollars?

Following is a transcript of the video:
Narrator: What makes these shoes worth almost $800? Christian Louboutin is the mastermind behind these iconic red-bottomed shoes. It's safe to say his footwear has stepped into the mainstream. Celebrities all over the world wear them.
"You know the ones with the high heels and the red bottoms?"
♪ These expensive, these is red bottoms ♪ ♪ These is bloody shoes ♪
Narrator: Louboutin even had the red bottoms trademarked. The signature Louboutin pumps, start at $695. The most expensive pair, nearly $6,000. So how did this craze start? Christian Louboutin had the idea for red soles in 1993. An employee was painting her nails red. Louboutin snagged the bottle and painted the soles of a prototype shoe. Just like that, the red soles were born.
So, what makes these shoes worth the cost? In 2013, when the New York Times asked Louboutin, why his shoes are so expensive, he blamed production costs. Louboutin said, "It's expensive to make shoes in Europe." From 2008 to 2013, he said his company's production costs had doubled as the euro strengthened against the dollar, and competition increased for quality materials from factories in Asia.
David Mesquita, the co-owner of Leather Spa, says craftsmanship also plays a part in the shoes' high price tag. His company works directly with Louboutin to repair its shoes, repainting and replacing the red soles.
David Mesquita: I mean there's a lot of things that go into the design of a shoe, and the making of a shoe. Most importantly, I think is, who's designing it, who's manufacturing it, and also what materials they're using to make the shoes.
Whether you're talking about feathers, rhinestones, or exotic materials, there's so much attention to detail that they put into their manufacturing and designing of their shoes. Narrator: For instance, these $3,595 Louboutins are embellished with Swarovski Crystals. And these raccoon fur boots cost $1,995. When it all comes down to it, people are paying for the status symbol.
Producer Spencer Alben bought a pair of Louboutins for her wedding.
Spencer Alben: It makes me sound so stuck up, but I love the red soles because it's such like a fashion icon symbol. There's something about them that when you see them in a picture, you instantly know what those are. So it's like a status symbol I guess, which makes me sound terrible.
They were over $1,000, which when I say that now, is insane for one pair of shoes that you're probably never gonna wear again. It's like something that everyone knows, so the second you see the red bottoms, it's like, I know what those are, I know what those cost. And it's so superficial that we care about that, but it really is something that is universal. You see that and you instantly know what those are, and it's something special. So I think, something as silly as the color of the sole on the shoe, makes them so special, because it's universally identifiable.
Narrator: Would you drop $1,000 for red-bottomed shoes?

My first time visiting Toronto, my girlfriend (now my wife) and I visited the Louboutin exhibit. I remember laying my eyes on the Rollerboy Spiked loafers, I fell in love with the shoe. It was unique and like nothing I've seen before. At the time, I was working at Dunkin Donuts so it was completely out of my price range. Since then, I've had a good career in IT and for my wedding day I knew exactly the shoe I wanted to wear that day and it was worth the $1000 price tag.

"What makes these shoes worth almost 800 dollars?" Short answer: They aren't worth 800 dollars. They cost 800. The shoes themselves arent worth anywhere near the pricetag, its the same as all fashion brands, you are paying for the brand, not the product itself. The only reason they sell is because of shallow and vain people who feel the need to spend such outrageous amounts of money simply to show them off. Such as Spencer Alben, who's entire reasoning for buying them amounts to "I wanted to show them off because people know they are expensive."

When I was younger because my feet are child-sized I bought some custom made shoes in a classic pump with a moderate heel. I still have those shoes 20+ years later. They are my favourite pumps I own them in classic black. I've only had to take them in for repairs for a worn heel or worn sole a few times. At the time I paid 800 dollars for a pair of classic pumps that still fit as nicely as when I first got them. When I see designer shoes it makes me think of times I would have bought custom shoes for at least 500 bucks at the time and have only had to take them in a few times to fix the sole with 15 - 20+ years of owning them. I can understand paying a lot if there you are fetting high-quality shoes. It's totally worth paying the extra money on a classic style if they are comfortable and last a long time. I would gladly pay over a thousand dollars on a great pair of shoes or boots as long as they fit and last a long time.

That actually makes sense. Higher quality at a high production is really expensive. So the product costs more. It's usually cheap items that are made using slave labor, harmful materials, unethical practices and such. However, there are many instances where you are literally just paying for a label and it tends to show in the quality (take the newer Louis Vuitton bags for instance, the quality has gone down a lot but prices remain the same due to the name). Christian Louboutin is very meticulous about his craftsmanship and views his shoes as pieces of art. But I also have to agree with another commenter, they hurt like crazy and it's NOT worth the money to kill your feet! EDIT: I'm hearing the quality has gone down on these shoes too!

Tiara Letrice almost everything in quality for brand name stuff are going down. There are three stores I shopped at for awhile. Comparing to the first time I bought from there (I still have the items from 10 years ago) and compared to now the quality is half to 70% of what it used to be and cost 25-40% more excluding tax. Even styles now and days aren’t that great because it tends to be repetitive and nothing unique and new. I say, get things on sale/ clearance because they’re usually half or 25% of the price for half the quality. That’s when it might be worth it depending on how you view it.

Historical fact : Red High Heels were already a thing before Louboutin. It was a must for the noblemen in Europe around the 15th century(back when high heels was only for men, it was a masculine fashion piece). The glossy red-soled shoes showed they never worked because it was clean and it was red because they represent the blood of their enemy crushed in battle. Louis XIV was very fond of shoes with red heels. And no man could have a heel higher than the king. Bright red was also a rare color on clothes, so having red-heels meant a nobleman was very wealthy, powerful in war and never worked at all (so even more rich).

Customers who have knowledge in the high-end fashion already knows this too: simply , you're not paying for the "high cost" of production , nor design, nor distribution.. you're paying the brand, the symbol and the experience. What's hard to imagine??? It's no different from being validated by having an expensive dress or car or house. Shall we stop there? No, it's all a matter of preference. You want to wear penny loafers, go right ahead. All these comments about how shallow people are, but these shoes sell and it was a brilliant marketing idea.
@whitemoonwolf13

@404 Error Not Found you are judging others based on what they prefer and coming to the conclusion that they must be frivolous, shallow and foolish. Hello kettle. That sounds like a very shallow thing to do.

There's nothing wrong with splurging money on expensive things, but if it is driven by low self-esteem and a craving for validation, it would be better to invest that money into personal growth. There are lot of beautiful things that you can do with your hard-earned thousand dollars.

Exactly this. ^^^ I *could* drop a thou on a red souled monstrosity, but why should I? They're notoriously uncomfortable and cause blisters. Which to a mature, relatively sane person would mean they're pointless to buy. But if Louboutin's market is aimed at the low self-esteem teenage mentality of "I'll wear the craziest shoes I can find and screw the blisters", it just tells me what I need to know about the brand overall. When/if I do decide a pair of stompers is worth a grand of my labor and love, they'll be something I can wear the heck out of without concern I'll destroy my feet.

*Actually Prince Louis the 16th started red bottom heels for his court and nobles, to distinguish noblemen from common men (who were now beggining to afford heels). (He also outlawed heels for anyone but bobles...)*

Besides, some high heel shoes manufacturers were established in China many years ago, market and original design would determine who is suitable for the shoes, especially for eyes focus and eyes recognition system for Asian.

Popes have worn red shoes for thousands of years. Elites in middle age and renaissance Europe also did.. I'm sure there's an esoteric reason too, but historically, bright, rich red was a quite expensive dye so it's always been a wealth signifier
