ATTENTION BAJORAN WORKERS: - Number one, I regret that I was unable to deliver this video in 4K. But after over half a dozen attempts at uploading, this is the only cut that has (SO FAR) remained free of copyright claims. - Number two, unfortunately the extended cut is NOT available for members as it was blocked worldwide due to, again, copyright claims. The Patreon version is up however, and you can access that at the link in the description. - Number three, I apologize for the inconsistent audio throughout the video. During filming of my commentary for seasons 1 & 2, we had an issue with my lav mic, so I had to switch to backup audio - Number four, Fred Tatasciore who voices Shaxs also voiced Saren in Mass Effect. i cant say i saw this video coming from you , i know you had a cursory interest in it but i was unaware that you were watching it. I appreciate the coverage as its on its way out , not to stave off a season end but to spread the word at how capable it is.
The copyright dragons are always circling, you see? They have great vision during the day, and even better vision at night. But in the failing light, just before nightfall, they can't focus. Magic hour.
I realized early on that they were going for 'fun' first and 'funny' was secondary, that perspective helped make Lower Decks my favorite of the newer shows.
True. I love lower desks, but I wouldn't call it funny. More of like a "How would normal, modern human beings react to all this weird shit?". I think it's super fun.
Are we all gonna petition Paramount or what? This show has “heart”, which is different than “emotion” shown in Disco. Also, I love Tendi too. She’s like the epitome of Trek. Fight me… and I’ll just stun you and win you over with my enthusiasm after you’ve recovered.
Humour has always been part of stat trek, and lower decks was clearly written by people who love science fiction in general and Star Trek in general. Maybe you should have a quick look on e bay and see if you can buy yourself a sense of humour
@@swfcocs1 Some bits of Lower Decks really made me laugh. Some bits of Lower Decks made me think "God! What a predictable bunch of "nerd" gags." No one's obliged to find anything funny, laughter is not mandatory. Perhaps your defensive response shows that YOU are the one in need of a sense of humour. Something to think about, huh? Have a nice day.
@@thedakotalogsfrom what, and to become what? Also, there's no evidence for Matt Smith coming back, and even if he did, he'd be written by RTD and if you're not liking the latest series then I doubt Matt Smith returning would resolve that.
@@thedakotalogs all I can see is a April fools day prank article. And to clarify my question, you said he was back to save Doctor Who. So I am asking what he is supposedly saving Doctor Who from, and what you think Doctor Who would become if he did.
thank you for not scheduling this for days in advance so i don't have a premiere i can't even watch in my sub feed for days and then when it actually goes live i don't see it because it's too far down the feed.
@@OrangeRiver All I think about when it comes to these altruistic future concepts is how white men misjudged how the future will be. I think Joss Whedon got it right, or is the closest. In the far future in space, EVERYONE will be speaking Chinese Mandarin. You're already seeing the shift in dynamic with Eastern global influence. The West is in decline, they are losing power and influence and ultimately the winner will be China because of their business sense and not having blown up bridges with other countries and communities.
you dont even know whats in her pants. what if she drops em and a gross tentacle thing pops out. ever been to a gwar show? aliens have weird junk. what if her lady juice is acid?
I really love this show. It has grown on me so much. I am super disappointed to hear that it will be ending after the next season. Could have easily done 10 imo.
Lower Decks sold me in one and a quarter episodes. First episode: Alright, this is pretty funny. I like the characters. Second episode: Omg, I'm Boimler...
This show has done more to legitimize the animated series than I ever thought was possible. The cross references in general felt more like taking proper advantage of the rich history of the franchise, rather than just token nostalgia.
the thing about modern trek is that the animated shows are good, and the live action shows are bad to meh. even the kids show has enough memberberries to please old fans while entertaining their loinspawn.
As a nearly life long trekkie/trekker/whatever... I like to state that Lower Decks is so awesome. And the writers and cast nailed it from the start. Such a good show. 🤩
I liked the idea of Badgy in that there have been a number of holodeck programs that have gone rouge or gibe beyond their programming. Might not have been the best way they could have done it, but he grew on me over time.
They took a joke about Clippy and turned it into a character that sadly lasted more than one episode. That's not ground breaking or genius... it's lazy and low brow. Contrary to some sayings, farts are NOT always funny. Sometimes it's better to just leave the dead horse alone.
Tindi Obsessive jokes to one side? Good video. My thoughts on the Pakled in Lower Decks. We have actually seen Pakled on DS9 in the background. So they clearly are able to trade and do honest business. What we see are largely those elements that have been scrapping and junking dominion war era salvage and have been emboldened. Those that are on Pakled Planet and their yearly revolution and general 'dopey' personalities contrasting with otherwise very sturdy and substantive construction based on the buildings and architecture we see? I view it as an alien mindset. they have a biological want for immediacy. Likely due to pre historic possibly even as far back as paliolithic era shortages and enviromental factors that led to those that sought immediate gains as being able to survive long enough. This tracks with how robust their physiology is (assuming short term vacuum survival wasn't a joke.... that they didn't have to immediate get medical attention was jawdroppingly ... wow.) Mentally i'd put them as... Smart, but their values structure is different than us. They probably are the relative late bloomers of the region and saw that everyone around them already HAD things. Probably were treated as simpletons given their mindset and general way of things. Likely a very initially trusting society and people since subterfuge just takes up too much time and effort. They arne't stupid. Far from it. You don't figure out how to get breen federation cardassian klingon and Q alone knows what other systems talking to eachother by being Stupid. Plus as the tamranians have shown the universal translator isn't perfect and Pakled syntax seems to have too many words that are all encompassing. Or they've literally used 'Picard' as their word for 'starfleet captain'. Plus given how many wonder solutions the federation will pull out of fat air on a dime can you fault any of them for just going wit hthe idea the federation isn't bullshitting them?
"Also, don't date Barnes" 29:50 I listened to this about 40 times until I had a headache trying to figure out what was said here. I just kept hearing it as "ah so, doe ding burns."
the best compliment that this show could've gotten is my friend, that hates cartoons, not really into star trek (so doesn't know all the references) LOVES this show. i think that says enough.
I was born in 1967, so if I ever saw the first airings of the original series, I can't say but I did grow up watching TOS and the animated series followed by the movies and all of the newer Star Trek TV shows over the years. THAT SAID, Lower Decks is my favorite of them all. Feel free to disagree with me but Lower Decks reminds us in every episode whet we love most about the entire spectrum of Star Trek.
I initially avoided STLD, but when I heard about the crossover, I thought I should watch it. I’m so glad I did. Now, I want more live action with the Lower Decks five.
funny...I did the same, but mostly because I'm not a "cartoon" person. but after being pleasantly surprised by the crossover episode, I thought I'd give it a shot and it's def up there as one of my fave ST series now.
I just started watching this show recently and I have to admit that I'm really pleasantly surprised just how good it actually is. Animation and Voice Acting are both really solid, and episodes have been way better written than I expected. It's got a twinge of that Millennial quippy-ness that you see in a lot of adult cartoons, but it's still really solid. I was worried it was going to be a "he's....right behind me, isn't he?" type show and never actually gave it a chance
As a kid I was a sci-fi junkie and a Star Trek TOS fan, but one of my favorite comedy routines in high school was "Star Trip," an audio theater routine by the Congress of Wonders. An mp3 version of the original vinyl LP is available online.
Decades? Star Trek: Destiny was only 15 years ago! :3 Edit: Just finished the video, and this was such a great presentation of and commentary on Lower Decks and its place in the broader franchise. I absolutely agree with you about it providing some much-needed commentary on Starfleet, and I love how deep the characters ended up. Thanks for a great piece!
I agree about looking forward to next season! Bums me out that we’re only getting one more. I was hoping they’d get back to the tng era of giving us at least 7 seasons.
I am sad its ending before all the characters get to the end of their arcs. I thought it would be the one new trek show to go past 5 seasons. I really wanted to see these characters grow from nobodies to the finest command crew in the fleet....
I'm with you that hte Mariner and Ma'ha therapy session is one of the lower decks series high points. Let dude show up as a provisional on the ceritos. Him and Shax would get along great.
Lower Decks accomplished so much. It was a love letter to the original animated series, it brought in callbacks and check ins with stories and characters the fandom wanted to return to, and gave us a group of characters that were engaging not just because they were serious about their careers, but because they could be fleshed out characters that existed outside of their role within the workplace
Criminal they cancelled it, especially since it's way cheaper to make than your Discos etc, but we can't have it being firmly based on optimistic golden era trek and putting most of NuTrek to shame now can we? :) All those who've been convinced into not watching it by a single trailer, and by popular RU-vidrs vociferously trashing it based entirely on said trailer, might bear some blame and don't know what they're missing out on, but perhaps the fanbase of 'true' trekkies is also too small to sustain the viewing figures necessary for modern shows.
I think Lower Decks is the only new Star Trek show that actually feels like Star Trek. I would put it in 4th place too, behind DS9, TNG, and TOS. It is a shame it is getting canceled. I hope another streaming service picks it up.
I like your suggestion of rewatching the early seasons thru the lens of S4. I should add that I’m glad I started this video over - I initially started watching when it premiered & had no idea what you were doing with the looped Kamala Harris clip. Starting over let me see the opening bit of “real talk” about you going very far with memes & such. Tendi is my favorite character too, but more because she’s a big cinnamon roll of a character. I think that’s why the episode where she turns into a scorpion is one of my favorites.
Yeah I normally don't do premieres for a lot of reasons--glad you enjoyed the video! Rewatching through the lens of season 4 has indeed given me a newfound appreciation for the series
Right after you said "let's go get some pizza", it cut to a pizza commercial. The word "pizza" was immediately followed by the word "pizza". RU-vid is gaining...something.
I really do think Rutherford and Tendi are asexual, but they're also romantic and not aromantic. However they're both so awkward that they don't know how to express this. Fortunately both seem to have wound up with an ideal partner.
I really love that show, am not a huge fan of new Trek and this was the first thing I watched of it and it become an insta watch when a new episode came out, got me to watch Star Trek New Worlds which I find pretty good too.
I can't even begin to explain how much it pisses me off and ultimately disappoints me that they cancelled the show following the fifth season. It was just starting to hit a stride.
Its a fun show with just a rough first season like most shows tbh. Its fun if you engage it with the idea thats its silly and made for fun over the story and themes. But its enjoyable I liked it atleast better than discovery pretty good branch out for startrek wish more series had some fun little side stuff like this. Just dont take it seriously if you enjoy startrek and push through that first season and its good and enjoyable a fun watch.
Wow, great breakdown Tyler! I'm glad you made it 2 hours. I fell in love with Lower Decks from the beginning. I'll confess I've got the hots for the Vulcan T'lyn ( I know, bad spelling). Just something about those Vulcan women and their logic! 🤣. Can't wait for season 5! 🖖😎🤘🇨🇦🕊️
Just finished the video. NSFW Tendi making an appearance was unexpected...Glad to know it's not relegated to a closet! Also, T'Lyn is absolutely my Tendi haha.
I've said it once, I'll say it again. Lower Decks is the second best series of Star Trek, second only to DS9. And I came to this conclusion after its first season, it had that special feeling to it. I'm glad that it hasn't at all deteriorated in quality since then. And I'm honestly still pretty bummed that Season 5 is going to be its last.
I absolutely agree no hang ups politics with a female lead and diverse supporting cast it works because there is no hidden agenda and it's just brilliant writing.
Badge isn’t my favorite (though jack mcbrayer sells it) but I think the only outright miss is peanut hamper, made all the worse by giving her way more air time than she deserved.
If you want proof that Lower Decks is a good show and is worthy of as much respect as any other Star Trek show then i am just going to say that it was Lower Decks that made me a Star Trek fan. Before this show, all i had watch of Star Trek were the 3 movies that came out since 2009, the "reboot" of the original show. I also knew star trek by name and the reputation/influence it had on social culture. But it never accured to me to actually watch any of the shows or movies. Then, being a huge fan of animation, i heard of Lower deck and gave it a try... and i love it ! Not love LOVE it, but i had a very good time and was waiting eagerly for the next season. But then i realize the show was obviously making references that i wasn t able to understand, so i decided to watch other star trek shows. And by now, 2 years after i started getting interested into the univers, i have watch 3 season of discovery (i stopped because i didn't like it after a while...), Strange new world, TNG the show and the movie, half of DS9 (currently watching the rest) and Prodigy. And you knoiw what ? I love it ! I particulary enjoy how some of the episodes of TNG and DS9 are still so incredebly relevant more than 20 years later ! To summarize, i have become a Star Trek fan, not just of one show or movie but of the whole univers and it all started with Lower Decks and its pure communicative energy.
I love the show. I think it's hilarious. Steve Shives says it's not funny but I don't know how he says that. The humor is very insider. It's probably not going to be all that funny if you don't know the 90s shows pretty well. But Steve does so I don't know how he doesn't get it. They have to come to grips with the multitude of alien ethical standards. I love how they make fun of the officer's penchant for poetry readings and one act plays.
I worked out quickly that Shives has opinions that disagree with me own on basically every element of Trek. Now, I'm not saying that mine are correct and his are wrong and I am right and his opinions are terrible ... I'm not saying that ...
if he is still child enough to enjoy waifu, would seriously explain why he doesnt get the clippy reference. i fucking hated that paperclip. badgey was clever.
What can we do to get CBS to give us more seasons of Lower Decks.... it is a great show... fun, funny, great animations. Its a huge mistake cutting the show short!
Suggestion: you may not want to start with Second Contact. Mariner's (and to a lesser extent, Boimler's) characterisation has not gelled yet, and the humour is fairly mean spirited. Anecdotally, many people have said they were put off the show because of it. I persisted, and I'm glad I did, but I can see how many people bounced off it.
@@spicyf Crisis Point, probably. Shows Mariner in a more fun light, also helps give her actions and feelings more weight, plus the interactions throughout are great. That said, once you've got a feel for the series and if you like the characters, then I would suggest to go back to the beginning. There's definitely some ok episodes in S1, but like most first seasons of trek it's spotty.
54:50 -- An interesting proposal... I vaguely remember seeing the Ferenginar episodes of DSP and wondering if they're go into their world's societal mechanics better. Given how pro-capitalist they were, one would expect some manner of societal equilibrium with the manufacturers and other people who are actually responsible for development and construction of merchandise to sell, yet they're reportedly kept on a lower, way lower caste than the business executive types.
My son recommended Lower Decks to me, and we then binged most of the first season together, and all the way through his expression kept getting less and less happy, and he kept saying "stick with it, it gets better" over and over again. I haven't watched any more of it since. Just saying people's mileage is going to vary considerably with this show.
I do stand by "it gets better" after the first season...you REALLY gotta stick with it. Most Treks take time to find their footing. If it's just not your thing I totally get that, but the character arcs in season 4...I think they're fantastic
@@OrangeRiver Honestly, a few bits of LD made me laugh like a drain, but mostly I found the "humour" to be very cliched "aren't nerds nerdy" type stuff. Btw, I'm a huge Red Dwarf fan, so irreverent comedy, and sci fi are definitely my thing. PS: I still would rather watch LD than Disco, or SNW, or.........the one with the former captain in it (ptooie).
