I think the bubble strip being a padawan training wheel makes complete sense, especially Since Anakin’s lightsaber in episode II also had it when he was a Padawan

The bubble strip would make sense for ease of use for the lightsaber as Vader’s lightsaber has the same strip on it, meaning that he can use his saber with a lot more ease with his cybernetic limbs

I always thought that it was because keeping both his and Anakin’s lightsabers maintained for 20 years on a desert planet was difficult. Overtime he had to replace certain parts using whatever was available to him. That’s why Obi Wan’s lightsaber also looks different and why they both now have the bubble strip.

I can understand the logic of the bubble strip for Luke but if it were possibly due to him being a novice then why does Obi Wans saber have the bubble strip in Episode 4?

Great presentation on the Skywalker saber! I am a huge fan of lightsaber, especially the unique design differences in the hilts. Darth Vaders sith saber hilt also went through many apparent changes in the films, it'd be great to see some light shed on that perhaps 😉

Anakins saber was custom machines by ILm where as lukes was based off of the graflex flash unit. The rubber grips kept falling off the original prop so the bolts in the bottom were added in ESB. they also removed the glass eye from the front and replaced it with another red button from the back, but in TFA and TLJ they brought the glass eye back. Anakins lightsaber although similar in shape, has countless other differences.

I think that Lucas might have thought that no one in the film saw Anakin’s lightsaber up close in the films, so he wanted to make it fancier. Don’t forget that the hilt also has this imbedded line and was thinner considering Hayden has small hands. He seriously does. The one of Episode II is not that much bigger than Yoda’s.

Vader's lightsaber had a bubble strip until RotJ, so what does that imply? Honestly, I always thought that certain parts kept needing to be replaced, hence why it's different in every movie, but I do like the idea of Obi-Wan trying to ready it for Luke's training, especially since it would be near-impossible to get him another one or build one from scratch.

"It seems like Obi-wan was making a very easy-to-use lightsaber for someone who's never held one." I suppose that explains why Rey was able to use the lightsaber, and how Kylo was "bested by a girl who had never held a lightsaber." Or mary-sue.

I love your optimism that we will get canon answers to these types of questions! Not trying to be a jerk, but it seems like Disney throwing so much into the Legends bin that they just aren't going to get into this kind of minutia... but then again, they'll be pumping out 1 Star Wars movie a year for the foreseeable future so maybe they will.

Because Obi-Wan didn't want to give Luke the lighsaber his father use to kill 100 of jedi with during the purge so he probably give Luke an old version of Anakin lightsaber

One was an actual camera flash handle from the 50s while the other was a reproduction prop to look like a prop that was trying to be another prop.

Hey my friend, I really appreciate the videos.! I currently find myself with a lot of time on my hands due to a job loss about 3 months ago. So until I get back on my feet I've decided to take this extra time and create some animated Star Wars shorts. Your videos have been a great inspiration as well as perfect research material. I've got a great story that's been gnawing at me since the release of the sequels by Disney. Like most of us, I've talked to friends about how we would fix the sequels if given the chance. Well, that's my project haha. It's big but I'll do it in small parts. I hope you'll give it a watch when it is complete. It will be more of a motion comic than a fully animated project. Anakin had the bubblestrip circuit board on his first hilt. This makes sense being that he was a padawan and was still learning; however, when he is Vader and constructs his final saber, he puts the bubblestrip on it, again! Why would he do this? Maybe it's easier for his robot fingers lol

Hi, this is ki adi mundi's force ghost here and I heard something about a girl named Rey. And that nobody knows who she is and how she is so strong. I know all of the answers you are searching for. Now I'm going to tell you the story. Once there was a jedi master who had a very strong conection with a woman, this jedi master was Qui Gon Jinn, he didn't want anyone to find out he had a girlfriend, but I found out, but I didn't tell him. Later he got a child, a girl named Rey Gon Jinn. After the death of master Qui Gon I went to his girlfriend, and I took their child (who was 14 at that time) with me to train her to become a jedi. I became her master and a few weeks later we went to an ancient jedi temple to let my padawan create a lightsaber and to let her find a kyber cristal, I waited at the opening of the temple while Rey went into the temple. There suddenly was some kind of explosion inside the temple, so I looked what was happening and I saw my padawan standing in some kind op portal (I later found out it was something called the world between worlds) Then she looked at me and a few seconds later there was another explosion, an explosion with lightning, the lightning pushed me out of the temple and the temple was gone, a few days after my death I became a force ghost, I don't know how that happened. As a force ghost had been looking if I could find out what happened to my padawan, years later I was on a planet named Jakku because I suddenly felt a strong conection with the planet, when I was on Jakku I saw an explosion that looked a lot like the one in the jedi temple years ago. And I saw somebody falling out of the explosion, it was Rey. It looked like she didn't remember who she was or where she came from. But I saw something in her, I saw a new hope for when it's needed, knowing that my padawan was still alive my force ghost disappeared. And that's where Rey came from and how she is so strong.

I just realized I’ve been calling Obi-Wan “Ben” for all these years lol I mean I still call him Obi-Wan but I always say Ben for short. How did he get the name “Old Ben”?

It’s not just the color. Anakin’s lightsaber was designed for right-handed wielders only. That’s why they both lost their right hand. Meanwhile, Luke’s lightsaber can be wielded with either hand.

The reason is because Lucas messed up like you said! There was no need for him to change the lightsaber in the prequels. Like why would you change something that’s already established? Just make your new movies (the prequels) fit with your original films (Star Wars, empire and Jedi)

Vader’s has a bubble strip too. If that’s the activation box, maybe that’s used to protrude more and allow the user to apply less pressure to keep their lightsaber on.

I think the reason why he tinkered with it is that he wanted to keep it in proper shape until luke got it. Also, I'm sure (as with everything pertaining to Anakin) he thought it could use practical improvements. Another reason is that I doubt dust can be good for a lightsaber, especially the internals. Not to mention this takes place on a sand planet where sand can get all over a lightsaber's insides.

Awesome topic! Been obsessed with lightsaber hilt variants since ESB. Very cool theory. I always believed that obi-wan tinkered with his own and Anakin's saber to make improvements in his years of solitude and Vader did the same. After all, the Vader hilt had a circuit card as well(during the dark times). I think the modified hilts were improvements based on the tech available at the time of ANH. Luke further improved the saber as a training exercise and used a different style circuit card that was an upgrade to the bubble strip (also seen on one of the ESB Vader Hilts). Anyway, love the video. I hope this detail in lightsaber prop variations is addressed in cannon soon.

It was also changed again in the sequel trilogy I don’t know which one but when ever Rey gets the lightsaber It is again changed this time to have a leather strap near the switch going all around the hilt as well as some gold detailing around the top part of it
