Why Lupe Fiasco's Tetsuo & Youth Is Underrated

Nostalgia is a beast no artist can evade, so comparing this album to his previous work is an exercise in ineptness. Whether better than The Cool or worse than Food & Liquor is a distraction. Tetsuo & Youth deserves its own exalted podium. Jude and Justin explain why T&Y is underrated.

It's all about the execution. The way he executes his stuff. I feel like he couldve easily mass promoted that track, made a crazy video and everything. But having such a long posse cut, with people that arent that well known, with such long verses, he would chart if he sized that down. But the way he made the track, almost like he made just for himself and his people. The more obscure you make your stuff the less appeal it has cause its not gonna reach a broader audience. Think of what tracks he's known for the most, kick push, superstar, his verse on touch the sky, etc.

@kashstory
@kashstory 7 лет назад
Lupe was once my favorite rapper. Now he's my second favorite. The reason being is that his newer work seemingly sacrifices the organic element to his raps for more technical lyricism. He amped up the metaphors, entendres, wordplay, but in-turn compromised the simple, more direct, elegant nature of his rap. He always had the metaphors, entendres, wordplay, but his raps were more balanced back then, his old style had a more straightforward poetic element with the complexity. There was more emotion on his stuff, his delivery connected more with me. Now, he's more like a super computer. But of course, he's still great.
@TheCompanyMan
@TheCompanyMan 7 лет назад
T&Y stands out to me because the emotion returned. F&L2 was a bit cold. Lasers sounded frustrated at times. TC and F&L were so third person it created a bit of a distance. T&Y brought it all together. Who's your favorite now?
@kashstory
@kashstory 7 лет назад
This reply turned out longer than I expected, but bear with me if you can. I like T&Y as well, but it never quite resonated with me as his first two albums did. I see that the first two albums he could've given you more of a first person POV, but aren't they still more personal than T&Y? Maybe I've missed it, but I don't think there was much of a first person POV with Tetsuo and Youth. It's a great album, but it never quite gives you an "I Gotcha" moment or gets as emotional as "Hip-hop Saved My Life" for me. And something I feel that often gets under-spoken is how great the songwriting was on the first two albums. Everyone talks about how lyrical, real, and conscious they sound, but all of this was delivered in a powerful way, a form where Lupe seemed more elegant, how the lines would be deeply layered, but still was direct enough to connect. Also, the level of crafting that went into them still blows me away to this day. They had songs with fresh deliveries and narratives casting atmospheres which completely immersed you in, songs that were inter-linked with each other. For instance the song "The Die" tells the story of Michael Young History through dialogue, while the hook foreshadowed the death of Michael, and in the end of it he was shot dead while the song "The Cool" ran in the background, which revealed that the narratives of the two songs are intertwined, I thought that was really creative. But I'm not gonna go and say Tetsuo and Youth isn't a great album either, it's creative and profound as well. It's deeply intricate and clearly was crafted that. But it didn't engage or compel me quite like the first two did overall. There were moments on it that I think he returned to form, like on Prisoners 1 & 2. If there were more track like that, I would've hailed it in a higher regard. But I sometimes get lost in the project, because the delivery makes it more cryptic. Oh, and I'd say my favorite rapper is Kendrick Lamar at the moment.
@CriticalThought004
@CriticalThought004 7 лет назад
I agree with on you on most points. Tetsuo and Youth is a technical marvel of an album but didn't feel it as much as I have TC or FL. In favorite rapper currently is Sadistik. He is lyrical and emotional at the same time in a way I have never heard in rap. You should check him out, especially his Flowers For My Father album, which was his magnum opus.
@kashstory
@kashstory 7 лет назад
Word. Yeah, I know Sadistik, he's pretty dope. I did already listen to Flowers For My Father, it was one of my favorite projects that year. But I wouldn't put him at that old-Lupe level because while he is very poetic and elegant himself, he doesn't have that street-level edge that to his pen that Lupe also did. Among many other reasons that he's not exactly one of my favorites. But I agree, he's definitely dope. The last rapper I discovered, that I felt was truly "amazing" is this new-cat Voli. He happens to be extremely obscure, I found him by chance, but his album The Wall absolutely blew me away. It's not an easy record to find because he's taken it down in some places for some unknown reason, but if you find it you're in for a treat.
@nyrisj
@nyrisj 6 лет назад
He's still my favorite. I actually find it hard to get into Kendrick because a lot of the songs he makes are things I've heard already throughout my life, sort of beating a dead horse if you will. Lupe constantly gives me new perspectives because his ideas and opinions on a song are so nuanced.

Lupe has been and always will be my personal favorite rapper. He's a multi-layered person with a multi-layered skill set in regards to rhyming. Tetsuo and Youth is arguably his best work yet. The concepts expressed, the multitude of literary elements, themes of multiple religions with comparisons to video games, double and triple entendre, originality, links to past albums, etc. It's got so much in it as a project to not be entertained. Not to mention each song on the album has a drastically different feel than the next. Each season groups together songs that are similar in tone but each are individualistic in theme. I think this album will never truly get the praise it deserves for years to come, when it will be hailed as an overlooked gem that people just didn't see the relevance of at the time. I could go on about why he's my favorite rapper but anyone who is a Lupe fan already knows what's up. It takes a distinct pallet to enjoy his expression of depth in the form of music. I just hope in the future we get more T&Y level projects so he can continue to set the bar for lyrical mastery.

YES YES YES YES YES!!! I think this album has a very strong chance of being a cult classic. This is the greatest comeback album ever by far in my opinion. Prisoners 1 and 2, mural, that song with Ab Soul, and dots and lines are so fucking dope. People on the r/hiphopheads, hip hop amino, etc worship this album. In a perfect world this album would be fucking diamond. Honestly this album is better than the Cool, a classic album. This could be a classic in the underground like labour days, madvillany etc if people in the future in the underground community really get into this album. If anyone cares Another really underrated album is control System by Ab Soul

This album legit helped me out out my depression. I broke up with a woman who I was dating for 2 years but knew for 8 a few months before this album dropped. the whole situation hit me pretty hard because we had so many plans that just fell through. I kinda didn't even want to go on living anymore after the whole ordeal. fast forward to when Lupe's album dropped, I heard the first song Mural on RU-vid and knew I had to pick this up. after listening to this about 20 something times, i was inspired to keep moving forward simply by how many topics he covers with an amount of artistry and depth that's rarely seen in hip hop. Thank you Lupe for this fantastic album!

Is Justin Hunte TimesNuRoman?? Glad Lupe is getting exposure. As a Lupe fan I get so excited when someone who has a credible voice talks about how amazing Lupe is as a rapper, as a social scientist. I swear there could be a class taught on a few songs of his. It would be so cool to talk to you and others about what they think Lupe's songs are about. When I first heard Adoration of the Magi I took it as Lupe saying that the most beautiful of things (a child), can come from the womb of a stripper who made a life decision. Yet, she is still a human and demands revere and respect. It came at a good time into life to listen to that song.

The smile on my face when I saw this video title. "T&Y" is so underrated it's ridiculous. Not a weak song throughout, a true lyrical tour de force in "Mural", and an actual story that changes depending on how you listen to the album. I adore "TPAB", but for me "T&Y" was THE album of 2015 (which means two of the greatest rap albums of this generation came out back-to-back).

Few albums have hooked me with their opening tracks as effectively as Tetsuo & Youth. Run the Jewels & Run the Jewels 2 are other albums that managed to do the same thing. The interweaving of the instrumentals, along with the way that the album was broken up into season, made for an engaging listen on top of the incredible songs that filled this project. For me this is probably Lupe's best album; it is an absolute gem. I so appreciate Justin consistently calling out these smaller projects or artists, and I'm very proud of how much our tastes seem to align 😄

We should have a conversation of Masta Ace's mark on hip hop. Masta Ace from the Symphony, Crooklyn Dodgers, Masta Ace Inc, his crazy verse somewhat dissing gangster rap, to his evolution in his sound, to being somewhat under appreciated. How New York's possible best DJ is Texan, and his influence in 90's east coast sound. In my opinion Madlib would be an interesting subject to speak on, he's been reppin' dope production for a long time, very experimental. DJ Quik's influence on Dr. Dre's sound. Love your stuff bro.

Lupe is criminally SLEPT ON and T&Y is arguably his best album. That last verse on Dots And Lines is 1 of the G.O.A.T

Lupe is my favorite rapper and I'm 37. Not one bad song on that album, every song is flames .

The season thing in the structure is like just barely scratching the surface with that album

Lupe Fiasco's music is like wine. The older it gets, the stronger it becomes and it's more appreciated.

My favorite Lupe project has to be Food and Liquor 2. Hood Now (Outro) is amazing!

Brave Heart is criminally under discussed. "The feeling when you realize you've been working for your foes and the curtains have just opened and their worthlessness exposed..." Love that line.

The moment where Lupe said that he wants women to reign over the world like it's a women empowerment song and he corrected possible homophones like rain and rein and he added that he meant it's reign as in queens that reign over men, and he corrected himself again it's not Queen the band, but the Queen of UK that wears white gloves and waves her hand, and he goes to explain that it's not wave as in heat wave but when you wave hand to your homie like "Hey, man" and he's at it again w explaining homophones, this time hey not as in heigh, the noise that horses make or hay, the food for horses and the horse is not hoarse as in losing your voice I clicked. This dude is a genius. Creativity at its' finest. The 🐐 lyricist

As a long time fan of Lupe, I'm so glad somebody is giving him the recognition he deserves and mentioned this album. Underrated as hell. This, and Big Sean's Dark Sky Paradise both got overshadowed by Kendrick's TPAB, but tbh I think T&Y is better than both of those. T&Y was so creative and layered and still has me finding new things out when I listen to it. Plus I love the production of all the songs. Mural is hands down one of the greatest rap songs of all time in terms of pure bars and display of skill. My favorite songs on the album are Mural, Prisoners 1 & 2, Madonna, Dots and Lines, Chopper, Deliver, and Tron. Lupe in general is as pure of a lyricist as you can get. On top of that his freestyling is something that can't be taken lightly either. What makes his freestyles so good is that he spits all those bars while going off the top (you know, true freestyling) unlike a lot of other rappers. People should watch his freestyle on Sway in the morning if they haven't already. There's just so much I can say about the dude but I don't wanna write a novel lol.
