Sophia Wairoa (Rongomaiwahine, Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngāti Porou) is a student at the University of Waikato where she explores ancient Māori and Indigenous worldviews.
She shared with Ohinga, the unique Māori perspective of the period/ikura as sacred and a connection to our tīpuna.
“The reason why ikura was seen as such a sacred gift is because it carries the life force of our ancestors. It doesn’t just connect us to here in Aotearoa, but it connects us to our whanaunga in Moana-nui-a-Kiwa.”
This is part of our reo Māori series, Ohinga, created by Mahi Tahi with funding from Te Māngai Pāho. Stay tuned for a new episode every week.

Wow. I spent many years during my ikura sharing it with the earth while holding the intention of connecting and honoring the earth. This practise stemmed from a Pleaidian wisdom I'd learnt and when I reached menopause in my late 50's I actually mourned the fact I couldnt continue with this practise so I find it really neat to come across your video and explanation of the connection Maori has with this practise. I'm Maori and was born in NZ but wasnt raised by Maori and Ive spent most of my life living in Australia so I have not learnt much of our cultural ways but it pleases me heaps that this aspect of having ones ikura and sharing it with the earth is part of our natural heritage. Thanks for sharing this knowledge.

I respect our culture but many do not because the country is changing each year.
