Super Mario Party sold almost twice as much than DS did and got better reception at launch than what this game got. Just throwing that out there for anyone who thinks the title is a no-brainer.
It is kinda sucky but like you said not only did DS come out very late in it’s life span, but Super Mario Party was the closest thing to a return to form for Mario Party for the longest time after many bad games and also only came out a year after the Switch came out so it had way more time to breathe. It was just bad timing all around on DS’s part, but I’m happy people are actually praising it again lately
SPM really didn't deserve it, and recently I've seen a resurgence of criticism towards this game centered on how bad the boards were and how horribly balanced was. I've always felt the boards were minuscule, had little to no personality (as is the UI), little going on at all, and the coin balancing was absolutely stupid; 10 coins for a star, 10 coins for a star pipe, and everyone can gain coins in regular minigames now? What??? It has good mini-games, but even Mario Party 10 has good mini-games, and Top 100 too, that hardly really counts if the mini-games are contextualised on bad boards or bad game modes. Reviews propelled the game's score due to a drought and hyped it from there, rather than from its genuine quality. It's similar to a few 3DS games that were released when the console wasn't doing so hot (cough cough Fire Emblem Awakening cough cough).
@@VicViper with all that said, I’m excited for Mario Party Superstars as it seems like it might be our last hope for a return to form. Though it’s kinda funny how it’s literally just The top 100 done right as far as we know
I had Mario Party DS as a kid, and I assumed it wouldn't hold up well as many childhood favourites tend to do, but I was glad to know that a large majority agree that the game is as good as I remember.
19:51 "And for my next trick, I'm sending you all back to the title screen!" Dude, the next Mario Party really needs to have a Bowser Space event like this, only once you press start, the game just *instantly* cuts back to Bowser's lair where he says "nah, just kidding, I wouldn't do that to you. But since I was generous enough to not quit the game, you owe me 20 coins" and takes them. That's just too HILARIOUS.
Only if the title changes to Bowser Party. And the game makes an auto save to deal with idiots who reset the console. Said idiots can get a custom taunt from Bowser.
Bowser giving the losing player a star/coins in the story is actually very within character. He's trying to make the worst player go against the boss so they are more likely to lose.
Maybe I’m just biased towards this game being my first Mario Party but I loved the soundtrack The minigame songs, Wiggler’s Garden, and Bowser’s Pinball Machine all stand out to me
Only the bowser Bowser board is okay. The other other theme I can remember is toadette's Music Room for being annoying. Very weak soundtrack, hard to say any other entry in the series is worse.
Mario Party DS is literally my entire childhood, you play the first seconds of one of the songs and I can instantly tell that's "Play Nicely, Everyone". also wigglers garden has best board music
NDCube is actually mostly comprised of former Hudson Soft members so they technically still live on, I just feel they took the criticisms of Mario Party becoming too samey around when 8 and DS came out too far for a while, thankfully Mario Party Superstars is finally as classic of a Mario Party as you can get and you can even play it on the go in Handheld mode unlike Super
@@internettraveler8666 I mean I would rather play Super Mario Party a million times over a game like Mario Party 1 that does actually PHYSICAL DAMAGE to your palms, but whatever, I guess I’m just an idiot for DARING to like a SINGLE NDCube developed Mario Party game.
MPDS is probably the definition of a cult classic, I've always loved this game, and most people I've heard that owned it talk about it just as positively. EDIT: There's two modes you missed talking about, both exclusive to Multiplayer if you only connected to one other player, Pen Pals and Desert Duel. Just letting you know, if you might not have been able to play those modes.
I'm glad that the fake anti-piracy screens died EDIT: Ok, I don't hate that trend anymore. It was fine and interesting at first but people honestly ruined it when they overexploted and tried to passed it as real.
This was the only Mario Party I had as a kid, and I felt so clever that you could get those points for unlockables you mentioned by playing team games where my teammate was the highest level cpu, and it even gave you more points for having that higher level cpu like it wasn't actually making things way easier!
15:49 This part made me realise how much I miss Download Play. Even limited stuff would be cool on switch if friends could play together with just one copy. Awesome video, definetly think Mario Party DS is one of the best Mario Parties, also MP8 was good too 👀
Yes Mario Party 8 is good!! By far my favorite Mario Party, it defined my childhood. With it being the last home console game made by Hudson Soft, they definitely went out with a bang. Rest in peace Hudson, gone but never forgotten!
@@Pixelcraftian I've a better counter argument: if Nintendo allowed people to play with just a copy of a Switch game (with limitations), people who doesn't have a copy, would see how fun is the game and buy it.
I rememeber 2 game on MPDS in particular, the globe shooter, a really fun FPS and the game in which you needed to take photo of everybody. I would play these game in loop...
Haha, I still play this unironicaly with my brother. We recently went on a short 3 hour flight and spent it playing a 20 turn game on pinball land. This games a must have, even today
but why would you ever pick random? I wish there was a way to challenge no one if you rather play it safe (or every other player is broke so you can't win anyting) also it would be fun if the friendship space allowed you to refuse the coins, so nobody gets them
20:52 I will grant you that trying to play Triangle Twisters with the D-Pad and buttons was pretty bad, but I always thought that the stylus mode worked pretty well. It took a little getting used to, but once you got the hang of it, it was easy to tell how each triangle spun relative to where you put the stylus. It also let you work faster, generally speaking. Granted, I put a lot of time into that minigame and definitely found it to be a fun time, though not my favorite part of that game (which had to be Toadette's board and the minigame modes). Great analysis of a great game - I would love to see more handheld Mario Partys like this one.
With the points and collectables there’s one for each character if you beat story mode with that character, also there’s a few multiplayer specific modes that were fun my personal favorite being pen pals
I’m surprised he said that the music isn’t good cuz maybe it’s just a bias but I find that all the tracks were amazing especially since it was on a small handheld. And even Kameks stage fits the mood perfectly and is kinda a bop imo.
This game was the first one I ever personally owned alongside the orange DSi I got so many years ago (It's been over a decade and it still works great, sturdy device!) My rose tinted glasses were flying on the second I saw the notification. Great review!
I remember that triangle twisters has also another mode where you have to replicate an image on the top screen by rotating the triangles on the bottom....i dont remember the name though....
This game and Mario Kart DS were two of my favorite DS games purely because I could play with my siblings and cousins, none of which had the games, but almost all of which had a DS.
Awesome video as always, although, I would have enjoyed if you could have compared it to other portable Mario Party games. That way we can understand why it's the best handheld MP in your opinion
Another reason why this game got overshadowed was because in the same year that "Mario Party DS" came out, "Mario Party 8" released on the Wii earlier that same year and outsold MPDS by a landslide, but was critically panned when it came out. Not to mention that in the same month that "Mario Party DS" came out, "Super Mario Galaxy" and "Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games" also came out and already had people's attention.
Oh wow, my cousin used to have this, I really want it but it’s a ds game so it’s impossible to find a physical copy, I just want to play it with my friends/cousins via DS download Edit: Going to a gamestop near me to get it physically, i’m excited, my cousins and friends gonna have fun
Seeing footage of this game again, feels like a day dream I remember playing this for hours sitting down when i have nothing to do It was even better when you know you can bring it anywhere
I'd say it's my favorite mario party. I remember putting so many hours into this game. I'm sad the original developers are gone now but it's super fun how this one came to be.
I honestly had so much fun playing it with my cousins during the holidays, we all spread out and used download play to organize a big game! It was also my only MP experience outside of 8 with my cousins as well lol.
I just found this channel and I’m freakin mind blown by how good this vid is. I loved Mario party Dd as a kid haha. Definitely gonna watch all the other videos now
Wasn't expecting him to make this video, but I'm so happy he did damn. Also MP6 is the best one. I love the Tiny theme too about this game. Best single player mode as well
Now I kind of wish I hadn't sold my copy a long time ago. Enjoyed the video, Silok. There's something very cozy about your channel, especially these videos looking back at Nintendo games from the 2000s and 2010s.
Got this game in a lot I bought at a flea market once and I never expected it to be so awesome! A solid number of good and fun boards, a great number of entertaining and fun mini games and EVERYTHING is based on the plot that the characters got shrinked. Amazing! Also I was able to play it regularly with friends and flatmates with just my single cardridge.
@@miwestraveler3986 that's y it's bad. A mario party is good cos of 3 things: mechanics, boards and minigames. Star rush fails at the 1st 2. It's like me saying if paper mario sticker star didnt have its flaws, it would be the best paper mario game
@@mikayel6175 1 : some of Super Rush's mechanics and boards (mainly Toad's Scramble) are far, FAR from being failures. I'm saying if all modes were as good, it would have been a great overall game 2 : no one said Super Rush would have been the best 3 : Sticker Star would have been a great game if some of it's flaws were adressed, and it's definitely not a bad game as it is.
That is like, the most dry take I have ever seen in a RU-vid title. I don't think I've ever met anyone who even likes any of the other handheld Mario Party games, let alone thinks they're the best.
thank you for making this video, Mario Party DS wasn't a very big part of my childhood but I do have many fond memories of it. I'm glad to see it get the recognition it deservers.
I remember playing this game through many stages of my life, unlocking all the minigames to come back to this game in 2014 to complete the story, to then defeating each boss to get every trophy and incidentally capping the 99,999 MP points limit… I invested way too much time into this game than I thought
FINALLY, someone recognises Mario Party DS for the great game that it is! I still play it today and it's one of my favourite DS games alongside Mario Kart. Super underrated and should really be talked about more. The boards were super creative since the characters were shrunk down, the bosses were fun and the mini games are mostly very fun (at least for me), as well as the extra modes, puzzles, etc.
Mario Party and Mario Kart DS are legends in the video game industry. I remember being like 5 and playing with my friends at school or birthday parties or get together. With family members at family reunions, with my sister while we were selling garden vegetables at the end of the Laneway. Legendary games, bro. Edit: the ending of your video made me tear up
As a kid I didn’t really play games much, I mostly just watched my sisters play the Wii because I was bad at it. But the one game I really did play a lot was Mario Party DS. I remember thinking that one game where you spin a cherry around and through it was like impossible. I was really good at the game where your blow on the Thwomp though and various others. I also really liked the tetris-y mini games, and the mode where you go up the stairs and play a mini game each time
This game was my first DS game. I actually got it months before my DSi, on my birthday, cos the shipping on my DSi was delayed cos of issues. I loved the game so much. It was and still is my favourite Mario Party, slightly fuelled by nostalgia.
I loved this game growing up. I use to stay up at my cousins every Friday and this was our go to game. For hours we would play this game, as well as the multi-player super mario 64
I remember my cousins had this game and i played it once with them, it probably was my greatest gaming experience of my life, just messing around in the back of the car.
