Males weren't complaining about pulling their weight and investing into a female in order to attract and be chosen to mate with one. No female would have chosen such whiny complaining male..we wouldn't be around today if they had been as narcissistic, egocentric,selfish and self involved as many men and women this generation seems to be. Their ancestors didn't sacrifice their life to having children and ensuring their survival for this generation to be born so they could live very self centred lives. Without the help of the father it would threaten her and her future off springs survival. That's why women on average have evolved to be more selective. This is just as they are biologically wired, women seek a provider the same way men seek young attractive women. I also think it’s a bit unfair that women get more flak from society for their partner preferences than men. Women who date wealthy men are commonly derided as gold diggers, while men who prefer to date young, attractive women will get an eye roll at most. If men want all women to have only one sexual partner then they're going to have to do the same for that to be possible. They can't go around sleeping with a ton of women and then complain 'those same women have high body counts. if one male is impregnating a ton of females, lots of other males will impregnate none.That's kind of how polygamy works, the rich men could afford a harem of women, and all the poor men were bachelors. It's the same in polygamous species, for example sea lions and seals..the strongest most dominant males have an harem of females and most of the other males are bachelors. It's only in monogamous pair-bonding species where most males get a shot, otherwise most mammalian male's never get to copulate even once. No matter how many males are left bachelors with no offspring, pretty much useless and not procreating or in the gene pool as we see in sea lions and seals, natural selection will still keep a 50/ 50 sex ratio. That why if a percentage of males are having multiple females, that's always going to leave the rest without. The reason for 50/50 sex ratio is because the chances of having a male born who will have dozens of offspring, compared to ones that have none averages out the same average expectation of reproduction that you would get if you were to have a female, because a female is pretty much guaranteed to reproduce offspring even if they don't have as many as the males who are reproducing with multiple females, they still have more than the males who don't have any. The probability of creating a male or a female is exactly 50/ 50 because the offspring is male if and only if the father contributes a Y chromosome, which happens half of the time. The sex ratio at the zygote stage is about 50/ 50 in most species, including humans. This is an equilibrium point, and natural selection will drive the population back to it if it ever deviates from it. it's most beneficial to produce a balanced sex ratio in the children because it leads to the maximum chances for reproduction in future generations.
