One would say that one’s sense of self-control could be blamed on MR. I, therefore, blame MR for the for the problem our society may be facing with regard to understanding consciousness. “Why blame the stars and planets…look within!”
I really like this new format! The small room, the carpeting, the two easy chairs, a fireplace and an end table,... it all looks and feels personable, even cozy. Yep. Everything is balanced. I hate when I'm watching a video & I have to turn my speakers down for the intro music & then back up when they start talking. THEN down again for the outro music And don't get me started on the the sound effects
Someone correct me If I'm wrong but this could be an older episode that has been re-uploaded. I don't think there's anything with that, just that a lot of older episodes have been re-edited, compiled and uploaded as newer videos recently. All good videos nonetheless.

This is a good star talk. 4:58😂 this laugh helped Neil relase some disappointment for when people don't get the science right. For those who want to honour old ways, retrograde generally is a reflection period... so retrograde psychologically makes us rethink things about ourselves... it's like that day you feel you can do things differently for a change, then you can either fall back to your old way or enter the same way with new ways of thinking.
This is the first star talk I’ve watched all the way through without restarting because something confused me. 😂 I love this format with facts and comedic relief. Teach us millennials more!

😂😂😂 OMG this made my day! I drew a magical comic a few days ago about Mercury retrograde. In my comic, one of the methods to summon Mercury retrograde is subscribing to the Startalk RU-vid channel.

I grew up listening to several sisters carry on about Mercury being in retrograde. They still talk about Sun signs and planets. And various other people I know (mostly, but not exclusively women) will suddenly make some astrological statement to rounds of nodding and agreement. I want to ask them how it actually works, you know, how do these planetary patterns effect us? I mean the mechanism of it? It's preposterous. I don't understand how so many people can be so gullible.
Love to have some illustration on top of Neil's awesome explanations about how things work on the Universe. Always good to see you guys innovate on your videos, keep it up !
This reminded me of a girl at my middle school who truly believed the moon would follow her whenever she went somewhere in a car. One day in science class, she asked the teacher why the moon always followed her when her family drove somewhere at night. The teacher could not comprehend what this girl was asking and kept trying to get her to explain her question. "How come the moon stands still in the sky until we get in the car and then it follows us wherever we go? It even stops when we stop and starts following us again when we start moving again." After about ten minutes of the entire class literally crying because we were all laughing so hard - including the teacher - the teacher tried in vain to explain that the moon was not moving. It remained in a fixed position because it’s a very, very, very, very long way away from us. The girl could not grasp this. The teacher finally said something to the effect of, "Do you honestly believe YOU’RE so important that the moon just follows you wherever you go? That it follows you and only you? That other people watch the moon fly away when you get in a car and drive away?" The girl’s response: "Well, it does follow me so yeah, other people must see it doing that." This was followed by about ten more minutes of brutal laughter.
You could've disproven her by having someone film the moon while walking away from the girl. The video would've shown the moon "following" the cameraman, which would've contradicted the girl's belief the moon follows her. She would then conclude that, because the moon obviously can't follow two people at once, its apparent movement must be some sort of illusion.
Before I even watched this video I saw the notification. I saw the words StarTalk and "mercury in retrograde" and I was sure Dr Tyson had fallen off the deep end. Then I saw the full title of the video.
Dr. Tyson, I'm not an astrologist myself, but I would like to know your thoughts on the following ideas advocating for those who are based on some past conversations. What drives these beliefs, for those of a less extreme bent, is not the idea that planetary movements and stellar alignments are novel events that signify a drastic alteration of some heavenly order. Rather, the "predictions" and assessments based on extraterrestrial bodies appear to be rooted in four primary ideas. First, that all of the cosmos is one giant, contiguous ecosystem within which each movement and change has an impact, however minimal, on everything else. Second, that, much like most other ecosystems, the cosmos operates in cycles of ebb and flow, for lack of better language. Third, that these first two points are observable and predictable using historical analysis, much as a farmer might use an almanac. Fourth, that humans are no more external to that ecosystem than any other creature or inanimate body contained within. Allowing for the diversities present in different astrological practices and for some amount of confusion between correlation and causation, do you believe this line of thinking is entirely outside the bounds of scientific possibility?
I'm blown away by how many people still believe in astrology and this whole retrograde ordeal. We live in a society where information is at our fingertips and people still double down and preach their nonsense.
The language we use still makes sense if we consider relative motion. In classic relativity it's esquivalent to consider any point as static and everything moving in respect to it. Since we are on earth surface, makes sense for everyday use to consider our position static.
I don't believe in pre-scientific era. During the Middle Ages in Europe, civilization was in retrograde for sure. But before that, not so much. You'd be surprised about what people knew about astronomy thousands of years ago.
Have you seen the 2007 movie “Zeitgeist” part one, about astrology and religion, helped me learn how mankind learned astronomy... horoscopes in the 1970’s were common in newspapers, and a song called the “age of Aquarius”, helped me learn why religion came to be... it’s a lot to understand, but these star talks expand on that understanding. 😊
I know Mercury being in retrograde in itself isn't going to cause anything but I'm a firm believer that the placebo effect from believing in this does have an impact on society and that can cause negative outcomes that otherwise wouldn't exist
I’m doing magnetic experiments with a different type of pendulum yes a broken piece of iron drill bit hanging on a string perfectly leveled and, has 2 top and bottom tiny magnets and it’s interesting to observe the painted color tip indicating the direction. Amazing
Retrograde planets also don't mean that everything is going to be bad. Astrology is more about psychology. Mercury is also about communication, and Mercury retrograde asks you to be conscious of how you communicate.
Hello, Thank you very much again for this teaching and explaining video! But why Neil stops to Saturn and did not keep going with other planets as Uranus and Neptune?!? We all agree on Pluto is not a planet, but why the other two was not mentioned at all?!?
I have an unrelated question that has been bugging me for years. Is all the mass in the universe, enough to escape a black hole? As in, if all the mass in the universe was condensed into a black hole, would there be enough Mass to escape the gravity? If yes, then is it possible that the Big bang was all the mass in the universe escaping a black hole, and one day when all the mess and known universe has recognized back into a black hole, will be another big bang? Please make sure to credit me for this question, I've been thinking about it too long to not get credit if this is the case .
