I went to see the city that has my name...I am 71 years old with the birth name of Merida..Don’t know how a Newfoundlander could have a beautiful Spanish name...I believe the original city of Merida is in Spain between Lisbon, Portugal and Madrid, Spain....I’ve counted more then 6 cities around the world that are called Merida... Merida, Spain has some lovely Roman ruins that have been taken care of quite well... It was in it’s day the western capital of the Roman Empire...I saw this small city or town some 6 years ago....It is gorgeous....

This video was so well-made & you did Merida justice. I love this city. So many believe MX is a scary, dangerous place. Yes, some parts are…but the US isn’t the most peaceful country in the world, either. Everyone should explore MX. there are so many incredible cities, big & small; the people are warm & helpful, & the architecture amazing! Monterrey is another amazing city! P.s. I did overlook the mispronunciation of Merida, though. It’s probably a good idea to learn the correct pronunciation of cities visited 😉

Funny, I looked up nachos recently, los nachos was a vocabulary word in my language app. It was a Mexican chef whose nickname was Nacho, making a dish for some Americans (military wives? I don’t remember all the details). ✌🏻

Ignacio "El Nacho" Anaya (Nacho is nickname for Ignacio) created the dish in 1940s to attract US Fort Duncan servicemen's wives to his establishment. The original nachos consisted of fried corn tortilla chips covered with melted cheese and sliced jalapeño peppers.

I remember visiting 40 years ago. Entry fees to the ruins was a pittance, and free on Sundays. Been going to the dentist there since 2004. This year a crown and cleaning was US$273. Nice overview of the city, especially the big market. Quinta Montes de Molina is awesome. Dzal Bay, Bar El mCardenal and La Negrita are great for live music. Catch Gina Osorno and the Dreamers for topnotch jazz.

Your comment on Mérida being voted one of the top places in the world made me curious to investigate. Travel and leisure magazine did indeed name it in it’s top 25 for 2020. 3 other Mexican cities came in even higher on the list with Oaxaca and San Miguel de Allende taking the #1 and #2 spots and Mexico City a little further down. I find that very impressive, but not surprising as I’ve traveled extensively and Mexico never fails to enchant. Ubud, Indonesia on the island of Bali also made the list I was pleased to see. If Bali were not so very far away I would have a hard time choosing between Mexico and Bali as my retirement destination. Mérida is lovely but I can’t take the heat. SMA has won my vote for long term living.

Kibbis are from the Middle East, brought to the Yucatán by Lebanese immigrants in the early 1900's. Yes, nachos are a Tex-Mex thing not original from the Yucatan. It is popular because Quintana Roo welcomes many tourists and Yucatan welcomes many expats... so we cater the visitor. What I watched in your video at that market is that they added a more Mexican twist by tossing some carne al pastor, which is not typical either. Carajillo drink is not from the Yucatan either, it is from Jalisco.
@JorgePerez-je2xu

The Kibi or kibe The Lebanese introduced it to The Yucatan it's part of The Yucatan infused dishes. Not typical to central and northern Mexico enjoy.

City of Merida is beautiful. Unfortunately we are in times of covid. Before the health contingency there were cultural events, activities, concerts, all week. Let us hope that it will be normalised soon. I recommend coming to Merida in winter season as it is cool and you will not suffer so much from the heat. And they must film the city illuminated with christmas decorations and the Paseo de Montejo illuminated and decorated like the avenue of the Champs-Élyses in Paris. Best regards

Nachos are a Tex -mex version of chilaquiles. However, in México the Nachos include a kind of meet as topping, Pastor Nachos are the best. Some people think Burrito is a Tex-Mex food too, but that’s not correct, Burrito is a food from north of Mexico, and is a wrap of flour tortilla and meat not include rice and all that things hehehehe; welcome to Mérida, and welcome to México. Now the weather is very warm (42 Celsius indoor)

Nacho actually originated in Piedras Negras, Coahuila Mexico. Border town with Eagle Pass, TX. Every October, I believe they celebrate this by having a Nacho Festival.

Nachos are originaly from Mx, the food in Texas has much influence from mexican food, nachos are named in Mx like "totopos".

Nachos was invented in Piedras Negras Cohahuila bordering town with Eagle Pass across the Rio Grande invented by Ignacio Anaya, possibly a relative of mine, Ignacio(s) are called "Nacho" and therefore Nachos, it's their short name like Ben for Benjamin, Benedict, or Benson, Mexico has many regional foods, depending the State, or even city or town, what you eat in Southern Mexico, may not be common in Central, or Northern Mexico, but Americans traveling to Mexico do not know that, once in Puerto Vallarta, a town I know since childhood, before Richard Burton, and Elizabeth Taylor filmed there the "Night of the Iguana" in 1964 was a fishing village in the middle of nowhere, after many years I traveled there back, arrived almost at midnight with some friends, to visit another friend living there, we were hungry, and he took us to a taqueria still open at that time, and to my surprise they had burritos, and quesadillas on the menu. Knowing well that burritos it's a Northern food in Mexico, and when I was a child, people in Puerto Vallarta did not even knew a flour tortilla! Surprised I asked the owner, and she told me, the following story: "I inherited this taqueria from my mother, and she told me than when USA tourist started to arrive they will tell her they wanted a burrito instead of the tacos, tostadas or sopes she will offer them, she did not know, what a burrito was, and after not only mother, but several of the people who owned a restaurant were asked the same question repeatedly, and some of the tourist will get upset, saying things like, "What kind of Mexican restaurant is this? If you guys do not know even a burrito?!" So they went and asked a relative who had just returned from the USA after retirement, and he told them what a burrito was, so they learned to make flour tortillas, and start selling burritos, and the reason why now in Mexico at any touristy place you go you can find Northern Mexican food, which by the way badly named Tex-Mex, since it's not only from Texas, but all the Southwest, in the USA, and deserve the title North-Mexican. Same thing with the drink Margarita, invented in Northern Mexico, in a coastal ranch, a few miles south of Tijuana, now common everywhere, thanks to the many USA tourist.
