Whoah...fresh perspective... I can’t relate directly to the coffee shop thing but I know I’ve seen (and been guilty myself) a lot of that negativity in other areas and yet we talk about the previous generations looking down on us and being negative about us. We talk about “the struggle” when most of us are living our best life really. I guess that negativity makes you hip sometimes so you do it to fit in also, but a lot of it is prob not even sincere. We prob LOVE a lot of things we say are crap... A positive outlook is so much better and verbalizing it is so refreshing... looking at others in a positive light is the way to be a better generation.. then we can bring about real change instead of sitting on it and complaining ...peace :)

Not just a millennial thing. Had a meeting at church and there was a 45 minute conversation about...the music played during the service. The old folks were asking the 30 something band to play old hymns...not realizing that most of what they already sung WERE the old hymns but with a modern spin on it. The band actually knew this and they quite frequently will play the old and the new...right next to each other.

I agree with a lot of your sentiments, Jefferson, but coffee shops are historic! If you leave the US, they are all over the place, and go way back. Maybe Starbucks popularized them here, but their concept of the coffee shop is not original. They were successful in commercializing the business model here. I'm not hating on Starbucks at all, as I get a coffee there often, but I still would rather go to a more independent establishment.

In Australia it's the opposite, the big chains that offer coffee follow the hipster on-site roaster cafés hahah, even down to all the pastries and desserts they offer and stuff. But i agree we musn't ignore whats been given to us from previous generations. I encourage my freinds to read old books, old theological material and old songs because there's soo much good stuff. Keep up the good work my dude!

Good word Jeff! I love coffee shops and millennials but I go to a church with a lot of respectable people from older generations, and it's definitely an interesting tension between being a millennial and accepting the former generation in Christ. It's hard to because this world has changed a lot with the introduction of computers. I love the tradition behind my church, but am praying for it in the ways it can care for the next generation.

Agreed. Seems like when people are more absorbed over “culture” vs community, both being “mainstream” or being “hipster” are hated on. Just like what you like, try new things, try old things, but love people and community because your identity is in love and not in what culture you subscribe to. Love your videos:)

Love the main point about humility and recognizing things that were done well. On the coffee chain thing, for me, it's not even about how good the coffee tastes. It's about a) Supporting local businesses who need my $4 a lot more than Starbucks/McD's b) supporting the farmers by purchasing fair trade coffee. Starbucks only has 1 (maybe more in the states) FT blend that I know of. And I doubt they use that when you order a mixed drink. McDonald's wastes a lottt of money in their head offices and I don't like supporting those big companies that could be doing so much more with the kind of $$ they're making.

I've just finished listening to Love That Lasts on audible (I listened non-stop it was so good) and seriously I loved it! I'm single and found it so insightful. Thank you! However, if you're going to be doing any more videos about relationships, I'd be interested to hear if you have any ideas on the following situation: I'm 19 and in a Christian mission organisation and I'm single. I have a desire for marriage one day, but honestly I'm fine with being single right now. But more than being fine as a single, I'm scared of being in a relationship. I've never been in a relationship before and honestly the thought terrifies me- sometimes the people around me (older couples also in the organisation for example) often mention my 'future husband' or they see a guy around my age and say 'I think you're compatible' or whatever it may be. I usually end up blushing a little but mostly just laugh because it makes me uncomfortable. I know I desire marriage but I'm scared of any relationship at the same time. I know in your book Alyssa addresses part of that issue- how the focus on intentionality can make us feel like one date is supposed to equate to marrying that person. But I feel like my situation is also different because of the fear. Mostly when people discuss singleness, it's about how to get through it when marriage really is the desire of your heart. But I'm in conflict- I know marriage is something I want one day, but the fear of any possible relationship is too great. Have you met anyone like that or have any insight? I'd love if you could address this issue! Blessings on you and your wonderful family :) you're such a beautiful example of God's design for family and relationship.

I would never on my own go to one of these coffee shops as they are over priced but in my work for a major seller of computers/laptops/more I have been invited to repair said equipment at said places thinking it would be totally out of place but it was business as usual. Born in 1960 I have adapted to anything this planet can throw at me. I do buy from aisle 11; I do also buy from the lowest bidder / seller that has quality in mind anywhere it is offered.

Agreed, and I think the same goes for how millennials (and others) view the younger generation too. It's easy to say "kids these days have no values" but whose job is it to teach them those values? Ours. We should take responsibility rather than put all the blame on kids who were BORN INTO a completely different world than we knew when we were their age. As technology progresses faster and faster, the gap between the generations grows wider and wider. I believe it's our job, as followers of Christ, to bridge those gaps and find common ground so that we can more effectively reach those people and maybe even learn from them. Also, not much of a Starbucks fan, but I do looove me some Dunkin Donuts.

This mentality especially frustrates me in the church. We want to blame the older generation for every flaw in the church’s traditions, all the while we are pushing away their wisdom and guidance. I actually wrote a spoken word on this subject called “We Are All the Church Today”. If anyone wants to see it, it’s the most recent video on my channel

Thank you for this great reflection! Small suggestion--"Starbucks invented that" comes off as a classic case of Americans taking credit for stuff that has existed for a long time in other places. Your overarching point is completely clear (and wonderful!)...just wanted to gently suggest that it may be helpful (particularly as someone who often speaks to folks from all over) to make a habit of specifying "in the USA" when that is what you mean, rather than talking as though America is the default/universal. I think it would help folks jive better with your point (rather than prompting thoughts of "another arrogant/insular American"--which you are not!)

Just seeing happiness' (great name!) comment below and your response. I think the point is about cultivating a habit of speaking with humility about place and perspective (it's a big, beautiful world!) rather than leaving the audience to guess. Appreciate all that you do--all the best x

I am Gali, in the year 1980 I lost all my hopes, I became a thief and club dancer. At that time I heard about Christ, the Lord spoke with me though the Scripture. JOHN 14:6 “I AM THE WAY THE TRUTH AND THE LIFE NO MAN COMETH UNTO THE FATHER BUT BY ME.” I surrendered my life to Lord Jesus and confessed that He is the only Lord and died for my sins to deliver me from all my sins (Karma). When I totally surrendered my life to the Lord He has delivered me from evil spirits, which suffered me about 6 years. I became a new person in Christ. I love Bible so much and started memorizing the scriptures. By the grace of God I have memorized Five Thousand (5,000) Verses from the Holy Bible. Every week I also remember all the verses. Morning time I remember about 1500 verses for praise, worship and prayer. (Including 100 Psalms). This practice helps me to grow strong in the Lord and also to help others for the glory of the Lord. not everyone has parents, though. And even if someone does grow up with nice parents, that does not mean they learned all they were supposed to learn. As the church, we're called to help each other and love each other. To come alongside, and to let others help, love, and correct us when we need it.

Kinda funny how millennials look at baby bommers and even Gen xers as old and uptight when they forget that Gen xers were far more angsty and anti-establishment than milennials or Gen Y (I think of millennials as anyone born from 81-95ish). Older millennials definitely had more traits of the older genorations but the younger millennials are more like Gen Z (1995-2010).

Can you back up your claims that Starbucks created that culture? Coffee shops were around for centuries before Starbucks was on the scene. Also, I think people like myself who go to third wave coffee shops go for the quality of the coffee and think it's much better than the quality of the mass produced Starbucks coffee that intentionally burns their beans for uniformity of taste. But overall I take your point... we are standing on the backs of giants in many respects and must be grateful for all those wonderful minds and courageous people that came before us.
