Minimalism isn’t about keeping as few things as possible. It’s about only keeping the things you appreciate.

When I was stuck with a terrible job in my early 30's, I promised myself to build a F..k you Fund to cover all my living expenses for a whole year with a bit extra just in case. When I achieved that goal, I never had to work in a toxic environment. I'm 55 and I admire how early you came to understand what you really want from life. Despite our age difference, we do share a lot of values and decisions. Never got married and had kids. Never regretted that decision. Gave me tons of flexibility. I need a big space and it's not possible with a family. Love your Vlog. Kudos to you!

I like your logic. I think the same regarding kids in daycare centres. While their parents work and 2) to buy plastic toys the kids are never home to play with is just so pointless in my mind. I always stayed home with my kids while they were young we had fun doing free activities together.

I have been a minimalist for more than a decade. There is a book I would recommend about trading your time for money. “Your Money or Your Life” by Vicky Robin. This is probably the best book about the matter. The book explains exactly what you are talking about in this video.

Excellent book. I found it at the library in the 90's.

Have it in my library. Such an excellent book. Wish I had read it when I was in my 20's.

I swear, I can listen your videos for hours. Thank you for sharing your ideas and thoughts. You're the first one who actually made me think about money (which I really really needed to think). Thank you and have a beautiful continuation here and in real life!

I just discovered your channel and you have motivated me to start my own RU-vid channel! I am definitely a minimalist, but am still stuck in the 9-5, plus a part-time side hustle. You've just gained a new subscriber. 🙂

I knew from childhood that I would hate having a job and I would really hate the world of work especially as I hate working with others. Unfortunately, I am now entrenched in the miserable, soul destroying world of work somehow trying to convince myself that I am helping humanity through what I do and building some sort of resilience of spirit or some such crap. I do not know how to get away from work without plunging myself in financial difficulties and I am not a business minded sort of person either.

I'm of the school of shopping to get the best for less...I'm a thrift store shopper...I have found some great items, and especially clothing in these establishments! I also go to estate sales and flea markets. Sadly, the 2020's have been terrible to these shopping places. I live in San Francisco...the only reason I'm able to do so, as thanks to my late parents, being an only child...and never married! I was born and raised here ( my late dad was also a native) I'm not exactly a minimalist, as I do enjoy collecting vintage items, of which I restore and use in my 1919 bungalow. I was, and still not a drinker, smoker...both expensive habits...I'm what people would term a "loner"...although, I prefer "individualist"! I have church and fraternal activities, and I'm a retired senior. I have regrets, especially job wise, however my profession was certainly not the worst...engineering draftsman...I always loved radio drama...and was in the medium for a while...but born too late for the real "golden age" of dramatic radio. I'm part of the "Silent Generation" those born between the years 1925-1945...just missed being a "Baby Boomer" by two years! I'll let you guess my age!!!! You'll win a hit on your Subscribe icon with the right guess! Heck, I'll hit it anyway! Congratulations on being a home owner...no place like your own!!!

Minimalism to me means less anxiety, a more peaceful life, less cleaning (especially since I have back problems), more time for myself and my family my dog and Guinea pig, less to manage and organize (even phone clutter). I started mostly because of my anxiety. I would get so overwhelmed easily. Minimalism has let me find peace again. And by the way, you should only have to explain yourself once to your friends about drinking and if they don’t respect you and keep pushing you to drink, then they aren’t your friends anyways. I had to learn that myself. Love your content. You make so much realistic sense.

3:55: “assess and look at things in hours you have to work and not its actual amount/dollars” = it’s going to cost x hrs of work.. Would I rather not work and not have this thing and have the day off instead? > 100% my thoughts exactly ❤

Really like your channel, just discovered it recently. You express very eloquently what I have always felt with regards to the common "busy worklife". When I was young, I worked several jobs at a time, but didn't save up money. Then I became a PhD and worked as a scientist in academia and clinical research with several organisations, because I wanted to "have a purposeful career" and helping to cure diseases seemed the right path for me. BUT: I have exhausted myself entirely over the years from working in these high-stress environments, with loads of overtime and pressure. In my mid 30ies, I got hooked with minimalism and early retirement and now, in my mid 40ies, I hope I can soon say Goodbye to all that stress and retire early. What would I advise my 20-year old self? Work less, enjoy life more, skip the exam and go to the party instead, indulge in life, have lots of sex, be compassionate AND passionate, love yourself more.

Great video! I am definitely a fiancial minimialist, and I definitely don't have the value of having new impressive things to make me happy. I see my time as the most valueable thing, and like you I feel like the less I need now the more I'll have for hopefully retiring earlier, or some version of financial independence. I also don't prioritize making money over having a job I can stand - just doesn't feel worth it to me to try to be some high powered corporate person. I see myself as an investor - I invest in creating a secure cozy home for myself, in investment accounts, and also if there is something I truly want, I'll buy it. I simply focus on not wanting things for the sake of wanting. I also am in this buy nothing group now and I adore that. If I get something from that I end up not loving, I can simply give it back again in the group. A perfect compliment to my financial minimalism. Definitely I'm a weirdo to those around me. Crazy like a fox, I say. :)

You sound just like me. Never wanted to be part of the rat race, sitting in traffic to go to a shifty Job. I saved alot, but also lost some along the way gambling on Stocks and a bad home purchase and sale. Grrr. Ill never get over that. I still weigh every purchase on hours worked, minus taxes. Now tucking eBay collects sales tax. I have hard limits on what ill pay for an indulgence like soda, cookies, etc. Stock up on sales. I never called it minimalism. Yes alcohol is such a waste of money. I can relate. I try to avoid getting sucked into buying rounds. I did in my 20s when it was cheaper. Now its so expensive for a pint. I can do without. Its so much harder these days. I used to save even with low pay jobs, but rents are beyond stupid now. I feel lost. I'm underpaid and over worked. I need to do something self employed, but getting there is hard.

So in your own words even if you worked for good people had chill rules you were still miserable, you just have a bad attitude. You come across as having a superiority complex and maybe people pick up on that.
