Why Moonveil Is DESPISED - Elden Ring Controversy 

Do you think Moonveil needs ANY kind of nerf? P.S: It's still amazing for Vergil cosplays

I also faintly remember that there was a small community of people that would invade/gatekeep the tunnels leading to the moon veil. I think they called themselves The Veil Keepers or something like that.

It being considered a war crime by the vast majority by the souls community makes me want to use it honestly.

Don't use these weapons, don't use these talismans, don't use any game mechanics ... Brother should we not play the game at all??? Sometimes I just hate Elden Ring community.

I started with the samurai class and enjoyed using the katana. I similarly got good use out of unsheathe. I wasn't using the internet for my first playthrough, so upon finding moonveil as both a katana (which I enjoyed) and having a straight up better unsheathe, I loved the thing. The fact that everyone seems to hate it came as a bit of a shock. But, I don't really do the pvp on elden ring, so in the end, I don't really care. Ima use whatever. Like COME AZUR!!!

It's good to see the community still hates Moonveil. I shall continue to use it to make people mad.

In DLC we will have longer moonveil with spinning slash. Trust the plan.

Night Comet is also an OP spell that wrecks as its invisibility properties makes most enemies not dodge it. all npc enemies in pve get destroyed brutally with repeated casts of night comet in their faces. I use it as my main spell for the entire game.

If it wasn't okay to use it, it wouldn't be included in the game. Same with summons. It's your own choice how you want to play the game

Honestly, the weapon is really fun to use if you're not constantly spamming Transient Moonlight. Using it sparingly and punishing either long wind ups or recovery animations while getting quick hits with the main attack leads to a pretty fun dynamic. I don't use it anymore (because the Dark Moon Greatsword exists) but it was fun while it lasted. Test it out of you want, don't let anyone make you feel bad about it.

A.I. voiceover is getting better every day. The flucuations, tone, mannerisms, and more are becoming life-like.

This video has opened my mind. I once was a gatekeeper, and told my friends not to use the moonveil, calling it noob/cheese weapon. But now I’ve seen the error in my ways, and thank you for this video it has helped see my misjudgment, and I’ll better myself down the line.

Moonveil is just awesome. I liked Dex int build with a katana since demon’s souls. Then in dark souls 1 Dex also decrease spell cast time, so it was even more fun for me. Elden ring offered a katana that scales with both Dex and int and that katana even has a magical beam. Most awesome weapon for me. Don’t care what other people say. I play the game the way I like.

Listen... I don't care. In honor of my wife, Ranni the Witch, I have used every single moon-based item in the game more than once.

This inspires me to build a character centered around dual wielding Moonveil and Rivers of Blood while using Black Knife Tiche and occasionally the rot dog, and perfume. Dex, Int, and Arc sounds like a nice lil combo! Maybe every now and then I'll swap out rivers of blood with the sword of night and flame just to mix things up a bit. Oh! And poison clumps! Can't forget the poison clumps! I'll need those too because my kindred is hungry!

Remember guys the most important thing about playing video games is to have fun. So use whatever you want

I think Moonveil is neat. I pretty much enjoy any weapon in Elden Ring that has an R1/R2 variant for their Ash of War, like Sword of Night and Flame.

I always found Moonveil to be mixed. On release it was definitely problematic but now I think it’s stupidly easy to dodge.

Not sure if this'll be seen, but some fun trivia regarding the Vergil stick. Peeve Peeverson, an invader and streamer, might be the "Patient 0" of moonveil users, man had an early review copy of the game and found the weapon on his first playthrough then proceeded to make a guide to obtaining it on his Twitter, several weeks pass, then he makes the Veilkeepers to atone for his sins of possibly popularizing the weapon. Truly the greatest of redemption arcs.

I used moonveil when I started, knowing how much it was hated... cause f*** what people think. I found it fun to use.

I don't understand why people have this opinion. In my eyes Moonveil requires more skill to use than Bloodhound's fang. I could never play with moonveil, way to different from my playstyle.

Yesterday, I was the unfortunate victim of a Moonveil gank when fulfilling Varre's questline, and on a low-level character using knives and soldier armor, I stood no chance against a Furled Ringer in full Tree Sentinel with Moonveil while the host threw the kitchen sink at me. I can imagine that plenty of other players had to deal with this at some point or another, which is probably why the stained reputation persists to this day.

Hearing ranni talk about moonveil while in casual clothes and holding a mug made me think i was trippin balls

I remember on my first playthrough finding Moonveil purely because I went into the Gael Tunnel on a whim, and got so excited to see it cos I'm a MASSIVE Vergil fan and was planning on making a Vergil build with it. One of my "friends" got so angry that he started bitching and whining if I so much as found a weapon that he didn't have yet, all because I found a weapon in a video game that got me excited. And some friends of mine still wonder why I don't associate with online fandoms.

Alright for real, this channel and its content is BANGING. I love listening to Ranni lecture me about Elden Ring weapons.

Honestly, the worst thing about moonveil (aside from the ridiculous damage) is the fact that you can use it VERY quickly and that in many situations doesnt give you an opportunity to react, so you lose half your HP.

The only reason I use it anymore because I like blue (Loretta’s sickle included)

I like keeping it as a side weapon for people interrupting my play, especially at difficult areas. Your punishment is death at any cost. Put your red summon sign down and that’s a different story.

Imagine getting mad at some dudes just minding their own business because you invaded them while they were using moonveil

Just let people use whatever they want in PVE. As long as they're having fun with the game that's all that matters (in PVE)

Thanks for the shout out of the Fallingstar Beast Jaw That is my last resort when I had died one to many times to a monster. The ash of war is spamable and rarely misses its target

I am happy to count myself as one of the viewers who voted for "just another katana". I think moon veil is neat in terms of its AOW and the dmg it can do, but I never thought it was the most broken or "cheesy weapon". Especially after its nerfs.

the latency isn't an issue in elden ring for online. The issue is fromsoft has no talent at programming anything that requires online and isn't a static message of pre selected options.

I've only recently switched from the Dark Moon Greatsword to Moonveil only recently, as I want to be a light weight spell chucker. I'm near the end of the game, and I only really use it on regular enemies - for bosses I usually just rely on my staff. The Moonlight Sword is my favorite legendary/magic sword in all of gaming, but I've already used the version of it in Dark Souls - which I played before Elden Ring - and I wanted to do something different. Shoutout to King's Field!

Reason why you don't see falling star beast jaw ganks as much is because you have to fight a moderately challenging boss and progress through the game a fair bit to get it. Outside of that and having a friend give you one you're way better off just getting Moonveil because it's just easier to get. Even if the Beast Jaw is 10x more braindead, you actually might have to play the game to get it.

Pretty agreed on your take on Moonveil as a whole. It's a pretty alright weapon and can be very good (have an Uchigatana with Glintblade Phalanx and cast Magic Glintblade while running Moonveil for the FULL Vergil effect) in PvE and PvP. It's a fun weapon though I'm more of a Dark Moon Greatsword or Wing of Astel man myself. I'm also a fan of Death's Poker, Helphen's Steeple and recently, the Glintstone Kris (aka my Pocket Comet).

Even if you don't have an int build, it's still very powerful.

the moonveil just looks so slick with the shiny silver color and more traditional curve to the blade. looking like something even a knight would use.

I am more of a Dragon's Dogma player, however I eventually want to get into the souls/born/ring games. And I find it ridiculous that people are still complaining over a video game over what weapons that there are and what type of builds people like to enjoy. And I'm just going to say it, if you can't beat the opposing player, don't whine about their build or what weapon they are carrying, just do what you would do any other given time you would fall to an enemy's attack, get back up and get better. Because at the end of the day it is a video game that someone out there in this ever-expanding world that people like to play. And that is all I have to say about that.

I made a moonveil samurai where i had moonveil, the loretta bow spell and the magic bonk hammer. A very fun build to use, and no im not kidding.

Who even cares about PvP? This is not a PvP game. The latency is absolutely killing it. Nothing is more stupid than dodge an obviously easy move only to see yourself taking damage many frames later. Why even bother?

For me is still kinda anoying to fight against, in 1v1 because most of the players just uses it's aow, runs away and nothing more, and in invasions because well, is still drangerous not keeping an eye on it. Still, in the hands of someone that's good at the game, it's pretty scary to fight against.

At this point both Moonveil and Rivers are both victims of its popularity. There is a ton of stuff in both PvP and PvE thats more damaging/dangerous, but simply doesn't share its notoriety. Moonveil is still a good weapon and can still be cheap or too easy in certain situations but I think at large its not worth any outrage anymore. But as so often the opinions change much slower than the game itself and due to its fanciness its always gonna be popular, so its hard to recover from being sick to see it.

From my first playthrough my main weapon was the moonveil I love this weapon so much that I use it in every playthrough even with the nerf I love it because it’s so cool and it’s give me great melee damage and long range damage

That list at 7:34 had me rolling😂. I can’t remember having that many rules for the fight clubs in DS3. We had like three: don’t heal with the flask, don’t rage quit, and fight in 1v1s. Everything else is allowed and welcomed.

Community: "using moonveil is a goddamm war crime!!!" Me: "Ehhhhh, l can sorta see it..." Community: "spinning slash is so fugging broken reeee!!!" Me: "...Do you just not know you can bait that?"

In my experience the best way to deal with a singular moonveil spammer is done in three steps. Step 1: aggression. Moonveil spammers are used to people reacting to the sheathe animation by backing off and getting mulched when trying to determine which slash is coming. If you instead react by going apeshit and continuing to come at them then 9/10 they’ll panic and roll away, especially if you understand step 2 well enough. Step 2 learn to roll. Roll timing is the enemy of transient moonlight and one you have it down it doesn’t matter which slash they choose since you’ll radical Larry right through it and sock them in the mouth. Step 3: meme on them. Moonveil spammesr utterly despise it when their supposedly OP weapon gets beaten by you just using something goofy to take them out. Now you may think the obvious answer to goofy is the ringed finger but no. You want them to think you’re serious at first until you reveal the grand gaff. To that end I posit to you this: the humble dismounter or zweihander/gugs with the ash of war “lightning ram”. Since 1.10 the move is a genuine blender rather than the one off goofy but surprisingly dangerous ash it once was. Since the game also treats light attacks out of it as a standard rolling r1 it’s incredibly easy to tumble into someone and follow it up with a proper attack when they attempt to flee from the living Tesla coil smacking them in the knees. Through the dismounter you get a very quick attack with the reach of the second longest curved greatsword in the game and through the two ultra greatswords you get the ever so popular crouch poke to shank them in the spine. It may take some setup to get to work but the resulting victory and humiliation of your enemy makes it very worth it. As of a few invasions ago I can confirm it also works against hand of Malenia goons if you wait until the first flurry’s end.

All this gatekeeping, rulemaking, and misinformation on weapons, mechanics, and builds is just nuts. It just makes me happy to see an impartial and, above all, funny guide series again. It really makes the idea of finally playing Elden Ring instead of watching it softer nowadays, knowing that Tired GF Ranni will be there with all the tips, jokes, and memes I need for a memorable first play.

Unsheathe has had an ungodly motion value, that factor that determines how powerful an attack will be, since the beginning of the game. There’s no reason Unsheathe should do more than harder-to-land AoWs like Stamp Sweep/Uppercut or Lion’s Claw. For how large of a distance it covers, how good its tracking is, and how quick the AoW is, it should be less rewarding. Still a good option for Katanas, but never taking out half of a healthbar of someone with 60 Vigor. If you get hit by Stamp Sweep or Uppercut, that is your mistake and you deserve to lose a chunk of HP. Most weapon classes can hit someone using the stamp and roll away from the sweep or the upward cut unless you’re greedy or using a slow weapon class. You get hit by someone using Unsheathe to trade with latency, you don’t deserve to lose a chunk of HP. Moonveil is just Unsheathe with an added projectile.

My favorite intelligence based weapon is actually the Mudman Spear, I dunno why its just a neat weapon? (Clayman Harpoon, not sure why I said it was an int weapon but I used it as such. Two of them actually)

I also think the Stat seasl contributed lots to the dmg output of moonveil in pvp. I see ppl still using them in high lvl and getting 2 tapped or when I help as sunbro. They literally run around with - 3 defense

So what I’m taking away from this is that I should totally try dual wielding with moonveil in one hand and rivers of blood in the other. Oh, and use the mimic tear and black knife tiche spirit summons exclusively for every fight possible.

I've never really used moon veil very much, and I'm an astrologer main. Mainly stuck to the short sword that I started with.

I don't think moonveil itself is the problem, but the way latency effects the game. New players due tend to spam the weapon art good player may experience lag and get hit twice out of the many times they use it and lose the game. It's happened to me a few times its frustrating. Not the weapon but the lag

I love the cheese in this game. Bloodborne was a more skillful game all around, and had better enemies for that type of skillful gameplay, focused on parrying and high-speed. Elden Ring enemies are spam machines and parrying doesn't make sense over half of the time; it's no surprise that people don't bother doing it.

I'll never understand the souls community...I understand pvp players hating on op weapons, BUT isn't the point of pve rpg play to grow your character as much as possible? Elden ring is my first and only fromsoft game, but I've played ALOT of rpgs over the years. I'm an rpg guy. And I've never seen another rpg community complain about finding powerful weapons before. It's generally not only accepted, but desired. The souls community is the only one I've ever seen that sees becoming powerful as a bad thing. Lol its like they think this is a first person shooter or something.

Getting ganked builds character, and your skills drastically. Getting ganked by moonveil causes suicide and an instant quit to main menu.

After the first playthrough with a pure strength build, I wanted to do something real cool in the second playthrough with magic and katanas and decided to dual wielding Moonveil and the Meteoric Ore Blade with the Moonveil as the main weapon with its weapon art. I also carried a staff for some magic projectiles. I didn't even know that magic users/Moonveil users were so hated in the Elden Ring community. I never really interact with a fanbase being a fan of that same franchise myself lmao.

I feel like this weapon wouldn't be nearly as toxic as it was if they simply reused the weapon art for the Frayed Blade from ds3. Not only because I feel it adds variety and not just doing the same 2 similar slashes, but I feel that the speed and range of the frayed blade is more balanced than the quickdraw style of the moonveil.

I think moonveil is broken now not because of the aow, but because of powerstance katana jumping and crouching attacks. It rivals damage that of powerstance great spears back in previous patches and is so incredibly fast.

The thing I hate about Moonveil is that depending on how bad the connection of your opponent is you may or may not dodge it by just running. Sometimes it works sometimes you get almost one shotted

I literally only used it because people were hating on its use. In the DLC i swapped to moonlight greatsword because the beam span on that was effective for keeping FP costs low and projectile spam high.

I use a moonveil and nagakiba duel wield. The moonveil itself has beautiful etching on the side of the weapon. Excellent channel

I’m literally doing a Moonveil build now for the the DLC. I think it looks like an awesome sword. Besides, most of my attacks are standard heavy jump attacks. I get more done with that than the ash of war could ever do. I also don’t do PvP so it doesn’t really matter what I use. I’ve done Dex builds, Str builds, Int builds, Faith builds, Int/Fth builds. At this point I want to do a build I never have which is a Dex/Int build and so far it’s been super fun.

My main issue personally was that it became the go to weapon for streamers as so many viewers would be like "Hey this weapon is good, you should try it", and so people would, not realising that it trivialised so much of the game. A large part of the fun of watching streams for games like elden ring are seeing how others (mainly people you enjoy watching) fair against certain enemies/bosses is interesting, so you'd be waiting to see an interesting/challenging boss and see the person have to learn and adapt and go through similar struggles, but Oh, they just beat it first try with Moonveil and a "huh, that boss was easy, I don't see why people were so worried" and it just makes it so made it so much less interesting to watch. (Just as one singular example, I happened to watch a "streamers react to malenia" video the other day and all but one of the people in the video had Moonveil dual Katana..."

Been a fan of your channel for awhile now, in fact is where i come to learn more about pre much all things ER related. i just wanted to say that i love the comedy your vids have in them, the sarcasm and satire especially. but on top of that the fact you tell ppl to play how they want to play and agree that ppl shouldnt really care what other ppl do when playing in PvE. its refreshing to hear that after all the BS i hear on other channels and reddit with how many players judge ppl for how they play solo. Bro, I use moonveil, and before I get 9 year olds screaming in my face, The game is still SO HARD and I’m a casual I just want to have fun, so not my fault when I’m trying to kill placidusax with my friend and that crappy boss run back exists and I get invaded because now if I die I have to run all the way back so THE INVADERS ASKED FOR IT I still haven’t killed placidusax, and it’s dumb.

In PvE, it shouldn't matter what you use nor should anyone care. It sucks that other weapons aren't as strong and enjoyable in PvE, but that is another conversation. PvP is another story. Now in 1v1's this weapon is somewhat frowned upon because using its AoW has very little cost and all of the benefits that a mage player would want in a PvP scenario which includes - extremely high burst damage, good projectile range, very quick startup and release of the attack, heavy stagger on the target when hit, very short and easily canceled animation lock, and all of it with a moderately low FP cost. All of this means that in the hands of a noob player, it makes going into melee very dangerous and difficult to punish because of how fast it is, and for an experienced player they can bait you into trading with an attack that, unless its a bullgoat user using a powerful Colossal weapon attack, you will always lose the trade by a good margin. I'm all for having powerful weapons in the game but I feel like there should always be upsides and downsides to every weapon. Right now there are hardly any downsides aside from having to be an int build to use it. If there were to be a nerf of any sort, I would simply increase the FP cost or slightly lower the damage of the beam itself so its effectiveness is more in line with other spells of similar strength.

I spent most of my game dual wielding katanas, with the moonveil in my offhand. Never knowing the power of Transient Moonlight. I am...unwise.

idk man, if you get hit with a transient moonlight hit, especially when it's easily readable that the person is ready to use it, that's on you

I use moonveil sometimes, especially on my current build in using to solo all the bosses for the first time. Except i use it differently than most, as in i use it how its supposed to be used: To attack from range. The difference is I'm not trying to create the distance to use it, I instead wait until the enemy creates the distance to use it. I also use the Nagakiba with piercing fang when i need to close the distance, but a lot of the time its to dangerous due to AOEs and follow ups so thats when i use transient moonlight. It really makes all the difference.
