I never got to my senses until in my mid-30’s and although I have done well to retire comfortably, I could have done much better if paid attention to the details you are talking about! You're right on the money, Jaspreet. My spouse and I have been belittled and mocked for choosing a modest lifestyle and stashing cash. We hit a net worth of over $1 million, with no house value, in 19 years. We did only very basic plain vanilla stuff. We shoveled money into our retirement funds, opened ROTHs, kept a year's worth of expenses in cash, and laddered cds. I read somewhere that there are three steps to wealth: spend less than you earn, save what you don't spend, invest what you don't save. It made sense to me and I do it still. I came across Your Money or Your Life by Joe Dominguez and Vicky Robin, and Suze Orman. Both gave me new tools and honed those I already had. I really really like money. Money is a wonderful tool for crafting a good rich life.

It's not that easy for 99% of us and it can take decades to hit a 7-figure net worth. I became a millionaire (net worth) by about 44 and reached two million by 52. I expect to reach three million by 56. Once you get above a million it's all about compounded market returns. At that point your contributions are a drop in the bucket which is precisely what you were grinding for. Almost no body reaches a million by 25 (outside of athletes, entertainers and lottery winners). Prepare yourself for the slow and methodical grind up. Early on focus on upping your income and contributions. If it was truly easy everyone would achieve wealth. Most do not.

thinking of friends and family who have gotten "rich" I have determined that unless you inherited it or won it getting rich is way to much work(it can cost you so much time away from those you love) and if that is your dream goal you will ever be disappointed. But getting comfortable and creating safety for yourself and your family is much more doable.

My company has a pension as well as a 401K with a match, companies like this are out their don't let anyone tell you they aren't! Just because not all companies don't have pensions does not mean all don't. You choose what company you accept a job offer from and if the company you work for or want to work for doesn't offer a pension or any other benefits you are looking for keep looking, or take the job offer and keep looking. As a matter of fact I have made the biggest jumps in pay and benefits when I switched companies. Always, always, always be looking for a better opportunity, if nothing else you can use a job offer to request more pay and better benefits from your current employer.

On Pensions, in early 2000, 2001, I'm listening to story of a guy who worked hard, got his pension and he's enjoying retirement. The company he had worked for was in financial traits and decided to go after him and others over their pensions. I was never able to go verify that story as it was word of mouth. However, more recent, we are seeing one political party is openly, heavy handedly going after gutting Social Security. I have been jaded for the longest time that I didn't trust Social Security would still be there. The Government keeps pushing back the age of retirement, we have during Bush's Iraq War, the Social Security was raided with no plans to pay the money back. I've seen a lot of older coworkers who thought they could do retirement, finding Social Security isn't enough and they have to return to the work force.

To "become wealthy", first figure out what "wealthy" means to you. Digits in the bank? Size of the digits that flow through your bank? A specific number of rental properties? Some amount of gold or silver or some other commodity? A strong social circle? High status? Amongst what groups? Some of these things can be achieved quickly, some absolutely cannot, and some are the source of others. But you need a target, a plan to reach it, and time.

But I do deserve to be rich. Growing up surrounded by awful people using you as a literal stepping stone to grow their own ambition and always pondering whether or this life should be cut short. Did I mention they were CHURCH MEMBERS.

i can tell you this is blatantly false. many people i know simply want to be comfortable enough to spend time with their families without struggling paycheck-to-paycheck. I know me, i dont wanna be rich; there's too much stress that comes with that. what most people DO want is a livable wage. Many places arent paying a livable wage anymore and people are feeling the pain of that. Young people have been left with a screwed economy and stagnant wages. They just want to be able to live without struggling; stop letting tiktok be your representation of young people.

One of the things that changed my mindset was to understand that there are just some markets that you are better off not messing with. I will probably never mess with real estate. Thats just it. Shaquille Oneill says that he does not invest in what he does not understand, and since i don't understand the real estate game very well, i don't wanna invest in it.
