The PS1 reverb settings are available to use for music production in all digital audio workstations by using convolution reverb plugins. Music producers need to jump on it now incase it disappears, its great for sound design and capturing the sound of technology in the 90’s. Convolution is very powerful tool that every producer should be making use of.

We're at an age where people are buying old digital cameras and thinking they are vintage, the low resolution blurry photos have charm in the same way analog has. So it's not surprising I guess that 90s/00s era digital reverbs and synths are coming back in style. Really interesting video, thanks for making it.

I love this comment. I couldn’t agree more, i was literally thinking about this topic recently. It’s fascinating that new technology becomes interesting when released because it’s cutting edge. Then it fades and loses all relevance, then the fascination builds up again but this time in the context of intrigue. Like intrigued how something can be so primitive and “bad” quality. It becomes an aesthetic fascination. I could talk about this all day honestly haha thanks for comment my friend, this was incredibly engaging for me!

"Whatever you now find weird, ugly, uncomfortable and nasty about a new medium will surely become its signature. CD distortion, the jitteriness of digital video, the crap sound of 8-bit - all of these will be cherished and emulated as soon as they can be avoided. It’s the sound of failure: so much modern art is the sound of things going out of control, of a medium pushing to its limits and breaking apart. The distorted guitar sound is the sound of something too loud for the medium supposed to carry it. The blues singer with the cracked voice is the sound of an emotional cry too powerful for the throat that releases it. The excitement of grainy film, of bleached-out black and white, is the excitement of witnessing events too momentous for the medium assigned to record them." Brian Eno, A Year With Swollen Appendices

A closer analogy is the techniques for gaussian blur since that takes the convolution of the image and a kernel. Anyway, the basics of convolution reverb are that for any sample it is replaced by the weighted average of the following samples where the IR is used as the weights.

A couple protips: apply a clip of the song itself as the impulse response to very tight percussive elements, then mess with their pitch/instrumentation. And vice versa, using very tight and/or rhythmic elements as the IR to the full track. These techniques will make convolution click on an intuitive level and open up a lot of creative paths. Convolution isn't really like an opacity blend... it's like a mask, allowing only the frequencies which are shared by the input AND the IR to seep through according to their relative volume and how long they occur in the IR.
@drewgrit_
@drewgrit_ Год назад
That sounds like an incredible tip, what a crazy idea haha thank you mark! I’ll definitely be trying that asap, I’m super curious to hear it in action myself. And oh yea for sure the photo editing analogy is loose haha it was to be taken with a pinch of salt and just act as a decent visual aid to hopefully connect the dots and help people understand impulse responses if the audio examples hadn’t already made it click! Love the mask analogy, thanks for contributing it to the conversation💪
@markwincek6688
@markwincek6688 Год назад
@@drewgrit_ You're very welcome! in my messing around, I've found it necessary to fade out the song clip when it's being used as the IR, as well as some EQ on the wet signal, to keep it from getting too muddy. Another idea just came to me to use PaulStretch to freeze a moment of the song, bounce it out, use it as the IR, then filter it with the pitched percussion technique as a way to give a bit of color and space to certain moments while still being glued in. (If you haven't heard of PaulStetch yet, please check it out!!)
@WouterStudioHD
@WouterStudioHD Год назад
@@drewgrit_ The most straight forward way of thinking about it is thinking about it in the time domain. An impulse response is basically how each sample of audio would play out in the room in which the IR was recorded. A single sample, that is 1/44100 of a second of 44.1 khz sample rate file, can be though of as an impulse and the response is how the room "responds" to that impulse. Hence the name "impulse response". That response is then dragged along the signal where each single sample in the signal is multiplied with each single sample of the IR, after which all these new responses are summed, while keeping their relative position in the signal. From a software perspective this is wildly inefficient, so we transform both the signal and the IR into the frequency domain (like what you'd see in an analyzer) using the famous FFT algorithm and then multiply them. This takes advantage of the mathematical fact that convolution in the time domain is the same as multiplication in the frequency domain and vice versa. After the multiplication we take the inverse FFT to transform it back to the time domain, after which the effect is done. I worked at Audio Ease as an intern, the company that made the first realtime convolution reverb ever, AltiVerb. I wrote some realtime ambisonics convolution engines with head tracking from scratch there that made it sound as if sounds were playing in a room, while they were only played on the headphones.

As an avid oldschool sample hunter and someone who's currently working on an "indie" techno/EDM album, the PS1 reverbs mentioned would actually be pretty useful. Even though I am a DS/Wii era kid, I also love the ambience in older PS1/N64 music and find them to be like time capsules to a time I wasn't part of. Stuff like the Silent Hill soundtracks are great. This also reminded me to listen to meganeko's stuff again. Spotify recommended me PSY2K about a month ago, but I didn't think much of it. Now that I listened to it again, I've come to appreciate the sound design in it, so thanks for reminding me about this artist. Have a good day and a productive week in the studio or whatever you're thinking of doing the rest of the week. This was a nice little video that inspired me to continue with the album, lol.

As time goes on, it seems like we just keep revisiting past sounds, so I'm eagerly waiting for 90s and 2000s era trance music to make its much deserved comeback. Don't know why more people don't feel nostalgia for that stuff yet. A lot of it was our first flirtations with fully digital music, at least in "popular" music. That alone is a milestone worth preserving.

Agreed dude, its fascinating to me! The cycles of musical interest is so hard to predict and its funny you mention about Trance. Ive thought about that a lot too, I had a couple friends in 2016 who were CONVINCED that it was going to make a massive comeback that summer. For one reason or another it just seems like the stars havent aligned yet but they are bound to eventually. Heres to hoping anyway😂 thanks for the comment my friend✌️

@@bFix I specified "90s and 2000s era trance music." That's definitely not either, but I won't deny its trance influences. That would probably be called "trance" these days anyway, which I'm not arguing against. I'm just surprised everyone (on the internet) is wanking themselves off to corny atmospheric dnb while no such revival has been seen for trance. Tyler says "nobody liked it," but it was the poster child of "electronic/techno music" in the 2000s and if you count related styles like "EuroDance" or "Hands Up," and by extension "nightcore" to a degree, then trance easily dominated the charts and even pop culture way more than DnB ever dreamt of doing. Plus, many early trance tracks were "atmospheric" in their own way.

@@drewgrit_ Thank You! Absolutely, getting straight to the point can be crucial for the success of any content, especially in today's fast-paced world where people have shorter attention spans. One example of this is in tutorial videos, where viewers are looking to learn something quickly and efficiently. If a video takes too long to get to the main point, the viewer may become disinterested and move on to a different source of information. Similarly, in music education, it's not enough to have a solid musical education to become a successful music teacher. One also needs to have knowledge in pedagogy and musical pedagogy, as well as strong communication skills to effectively teach students. It's all about combining musical expertise with teaching skills and clear communication to help students achieve their full potential. Also, i subbed. :)

@@RedButtonTV1 ah dude I actually couldn’t love this comment more! You fully GET IT. Some few select people don’t have the attention span issue so they have been struggling to understand my methods but they don’t realise how bad everyone else is for attention span😂😂 And OMG the teaching part spoke to my soul man haha I actually teach young people music production outside of this whole music RU-vid stuff and understanding them and music is such an important part. It’s a push and pull of skills and understanding and I absolutely love it. The people skills mixed with being asked random music questions which you have to answer in simple terms at any given moment, has made me a better producer and educator. I owe a lot to that process. It’s amazing to hear someone else understand that so well! You’ve made my day my friend, thanks again😂

@@drewgrit_ Oh, wow, that is nice to hear. Amazing work from your part! it is always nice to see people who are actually trying to make the change, not just earn from it. and it is true that a student becomes master and then master becomes a student again. Taking random questions is very valuable, as sometimes one gets asked questions that would never appear on their own to ones mind. The true smart is not in "knowing all the answers". true smart is "knowing how to find answers to given problems", to think it through, to ask, to research. and youtube type of social platform helps in it big time. Being able to listen to others as well and even to take criticism, is actually the only way to grow. we need mistakes and we need to be honest about it:) and growth never stops. I wish You all the best and "may the fire from your candle, turn the fire on many more candles"
