I dont know why but I imagined the workshop having some kind of loyal dog type artificial intelligence. Just image Engie yelling "Vagabond!" and you start to feel the ground rumbling when a 3 ton mechanical crab robot starts running towards her while making sounds that are a mix of dog barking and car horns

I think most of the time what really matters is how "Interesting" the character is. I am no professional as of now but it doesnt matter, I am a viewer of the story from outside which designs usually go to. When I look at the first design I see an engineer woman and thats it nothing in particular makes me interested in WHO she is and what she does, she has a box and some tools thats it. The redesign tho is amazing in my opinion with one look I immidialty got questions about her "Who? , Why? How?" and the interestinf siluette and The concept of walking station took my attention immidiatly. I dont know how much I am on the right here but I believe being interesting is the main line between a good and a bad desingn
@callmenaka
@callmenaka День назад
I wouldn't go as far to draw it as line to separate good and bad, but it's definitely a factor that can give you an edge. Hmmm... Now that i'm thinking about it, "interesting" may really draws the line. If we consider shapes, compostion, color choices being intersting even without storytelling, than yeah. It maybe boils down to the fact to "interesting" changes person to person, so you can have a good AND bad design at the same time based on who is looking at it :D. Adding stroytelling to a design broads the possibly interesting things about your design, increasing the chance of more people finding it interesting. I'm thinking loud, all of this migth be bs, but it kinda make sense to me (for now). Thanks for your train of thought, i really wished for comments like this, while making this video!

Fell in love with the style and charm of your artwork while watching through the latest Chroma Corp recap. *So* excited when I saw you put out this video, instant subscribe. Also, damn, it's well-made. I love the editing and all! If you're taking suggestions for future video ideas, I'd love to see you go through how you use brushes/tools to create some of the textures you have here. I saw some bits and pieces, like how you did the lettering, some of the straps with lines cut out in the middle, etc. And I fully plan on testing out and studying those! But I'd love to hear your thoughts/advice too. Also different approaches to linework and building up a piece, like how you mentioned block-in, using a single layer to keep the energy of the sketch. Always interested in techniques to try out! Also, I really like your post-processing and how you make things feel professional and polished - your finishing work, essentially. I picked up on some film grain and chromatic aberration in a couple of your Instagram pieces. A subtle effect, but *very* cool. Would love a video on finishing, presentation, layout, as well! Again, I love your work! Excited to see what you make next, digital art and videos! Okay, enough fanboying from me. Thank you for the video, appreciate you! Cheers!

I dig both designs, I do disagree with Sinix's overall design philosophy in cases of anything nearing realism, I think his philosophy (which seems to be the norm with a lot of design folk these days) is leading to the Overwatch-ification of everything. His criticisms about stiff posing, weaker details and anatomy around the feet were apt though. Great stuff overall from you though.

Awesome vid! I'd love to see some of your approaches on graphic design elements. I noticed in the video that you take a very analogue approach(ex. tracing over font templates, using brushes for graphics, no vector program etc). What is that process like and how did you come to that conclusion? Thanks!
@callmenaka
@callmenaka День назад
unsing illustrator like vector programs are alwasy great for easy scale and simple but clean designs. Same goes for just picking a nice fonttype. When i'm over drawing them, that usually means that i'm not looking for clean design, but something that astethicly match the rest of the design. I's a small tuch, but makes things more coherent.
@bryanho7376
@bryanho7376 День назад
@@callmenaka I'd love to see a video going over the impact of graphic design, and how it can make a design instantly more coherent. I think your approach is great with the simple, but nuanced touches(ex. the danger signs, labels etc). I thought the logo you made for Grim 9 was extremely well done:) I'm guessing you used the same approaches there to make it feel more coherent. Not sure if this is personal bias, I don't see many channels covering more graphic types of art. RU-vid meta seems to be mostly painterly-anime style, or illustration, besides Sinix haha Anyway, can't wait to see what you make in the future!
@jojodelacroix
@jojodelacroix День назад
Wow. What a really great video. For my 2-cents-- and take this with a grain of salt because I am way less experienced than you or Sinix-- the thing that really stuck out to me with the original design was that some of the shapes/lines looked really idk stiff and a bit awkward? so around her waist, the shirt and pants follow nearly parallel with one another. And even though she has a towel tucked into her waistband, it doesn't alter the line much (oh nvm. Ig those are her overalls pulled down). It feels like there should be more variation there. Now that I realize it is her overalls, it doesn't feel like they are draped over and pulling down. They feel too tight for what they are supposed to be. The arm holding the power tool feels weird to me. I like how it's on her hip with a sharper angle in the mockup in the bottom right. Here it feels awkwardly in between. Knowing that her arm itself is straight, it feel like the jacket is a bit too curved almost. Idk. Also the knee pads she has on look oddly flesh colored so at first I thought they were holes in her pants. The shape of the pads don't seem to follow along well with the contours of things and they don't feel thick enough to read as being substantial. All of this being said, I really like the OG girl's vibe. Especially in the bottom right panel. She feels a bit nerdy, awkward, a bit uncomfortable. She does feel like a girl you'd meet that was a bit more comfortable working on machines and computers than communicating with other humans. Also, I really appreciate the graphic design elements used to frame your characters. Both the original and the new version. You have the chewed pencil lying on the paper. The little signage. The broken/segmented frame around the character sheets. It's totally not needed, but makes the whole thing look so much nicer and crisper. Like, I love the designs in general and would save them as a reference photo, but I'd legit use the picture where Engie is leaning up against the table as a wallpaper. To my credit, Sinix did go on to say the OG design was a bit stiff and the revamped design better used shapes, so I think that was something he noticed as well. (Oddly enough, you mention how he noted that a lot in your revamp but he didn't seem to mention it much in the original critique). Which, honestly, makes me a bit happy because it means that I'm at least able to critically understand where some of these mistakes are happening even if I'm not able to replicate some of the same type of awesome work that you guys are doing. Thanks for this video though. It was really inspirational. It's always cool seeing someone that is clearly very talented show some of their journey to improving. For someone like me, who is a relative novice, being able to see that even someone I think is leagues better than me still has to learn more is really helpful to remember that it's about the journey. OMG! This was your first video? I'm so sad. I was super excited to check out your other work! Well, I will be subscribing for sure! It's crazy that its your first youtube video and RU-vid randomly recommends it to me right away after its release. As feed back I think video turned out great, and for design I think its slightly bottom heavy, the vagabond node could have more of a "tool" look to it instead of just a server and the vagabond workstation could have a little more personality to it like an AI assistant that follows its owner around and interacts with it.
