Why My Hero Academia's Simplistic Characterization is a GOOD Thing

This was way better than I expected a first video to be. Quality editing, well done.

"Ochako is a sentient Hello Kitty sticker on a backpack full of sunshine and I love her" is possibly the best sentence I've heard to describe her. You also got right to heart of the Bakugo matter - he IS utterly THE WORST in a lot of ways, but that awfulness is the crux of his character and what makes him appealing in the twisted way that he is. (kinda wanna go on a long diatribe on my theories on character creation particularly in audio/visual contexts, but I'll refrain)

y'know why I think Midoriya is the best protagonist? Midoriya: takes an incredibly heavy responsiblity from his role-model, works endlessly and tirelessly for several months, pushing his limits countless times to achieve his goals. Also Midoriya: trips on the first day of school and gives up on life

One of my favorite things about this is how they buck the stereo-typical shonen/anime trend of having the protagonist be oblivious so hard, that if anything, it is LITERALLY as far to the opposite side as possible!

You should also talk about how Konosuba's intentional contrast between simple animation and frames and then big budget animation parts emphasize certain feelings and emotions they want and work for what they're going for. It's a similar topic and I'm tired of people saying things have to be super shiny all the time or its crap animation instead of animated for it's purpose.

It's worth noting that even in the manga only about half of Deku's class has been properly fleshed out. The series really takes it's time to develop characters one at a time, and does not neglect older characters even as it shifts its focus to newer ones. You get the sense that while the cast slowly grows over time, all characters get their chance to develop as a whole, leaving nobody behind Are the scenes in 9:57(the flipped MHA) and 10:35 (wrong characters) editing mistakes? I really this the reason yuri on ice gave everyone backstories is that it was a gamble. They didn't know how popular it was going to be and so weren't planning for future seasons, instead focusing on creating a contained story arc with no loose ends. Which is fine. But now it's getting a second season I'm interested in how they are going to cope with having to develop each characters story with out it getting too complicated and detracting from the main character. Where as compared to MHA they were planning for future seasons hence why they left the side characters open for development.

Bakugou is the best fucking shithead ever and it physically pains me to see him compared to fucking SASUKE in this comment section. He's cocky and fucking rude to the max. But he fucking backs it up, he trained his Quirk like crazy so he wouldn't break his fucking arms with his explosions, and while being very confident and rageful, he always remains observant and continues thinking while acting on his shit instead of uselessly waiting around (see how he took down warp-gate-guy at the end of season 1). And him being rude usually just boils down to a foul mouth and a no-nonsence attitude - something many heroes seem to be lacking. He is THE freaking main character in third person, even All Might sometimes feels pale and stale in comparrision, as does Deku. He is more than those typical shounen school antagonists with overpowered skills, who typically have TOO much confidence, are revered by all and fail to act on their potential while turning their brains of because they think themselves so superior. Even in season 1, you can see Bakugou throw of all those tropes while remaining deliciously anti-heroic. I root for him more than for Deku because his flavour of heroics is realistic to me, opposed to the antiquated-feeling All Might-brand. It's effective, fast and thorough - no dilly-dallying, no flowers and rainbows, no rediculous rose-painting of the harsh reality that the universe of Hero Academia fleshes itself out to be. I've read the manga, and to keep it simple, this show ONLY keep getting BETTER! The quality of Boku no hero anime with the guidelines of the manga will ensure ONE HELL OF AN AMAZING PAY OFF, trust me :D

This is like my seventh time watching this video, and one of my favorite things about My Hero Academia is the fact that it caused this channel to exist. I seriously love all of your stuff, don’t know why it took me this long to comment on a video to tell you that.

Ironically my favourite character was Bakugo from the start. Deku is my second favourite. I find his anger issues quite entertaining, it can even be funny at times, and my favourite character arc is between him and Deku. I find it fascinating how Deku looks up to Bakugo so much despite being bullied by him when they were kids. And in the manga, it's interesting to see in that in the brief for the character explanations the author refers to Bakugo as Deku's childhood friend. it makes me think there is something much deeper to their relationship - almost a secret friendship or mutual understanding - from Bakugo's side as well. Deku understands Bakugo better than anyone else, he is very emotionally attuned to him and that is shown in the manga as well when Deku can read into why Bakugo does something when everyone else thinks it means something completely different. Overall, great video by the way. I love that it is about one of my favourite anime.

One of the best quotes you mentioned made me realize why I don't tend to watch a lot of shonen anime or anime in general. Since most main characters/supporting cast in anime are hard to give a crap about I don't get invested in their stories,motivations and/or goals and as a result they just feel generic and boring but with MHA I get legitimately pumped seeing every episode,I'm fully engaged and I'm always happy to see deku and the others grow and achieve goals. It's amazing tbh because not only that but all the character designs and powers are part of what makes the show so much fun! I remember watching naruto but honestly I never got invested in it even if it was similar in many regards it was just sorta boring for the most part because I could care less about most of what happened!

I love how he was 100% right in his predictions- the ensuing arcs do in fact focus on developing Deku's character, allowing Allmight to shift out of the limelight so that Deku could take his place, and fleshing out the background characters more.

I am actually beside myself. A smart script, well delivered, and simple but engaging editing. This is your first upload? Whatever effort you put in to prepare for this was worth it, man. There's a damn good reason you've earned almost 20k subscribers in two months.

I love both My Hero Academia and Yuri On Ice, they're quite similar. I'm a huge fans of both but I would say that how they develop character fits their shows and tones perfectly. I follow your point, but MHA Season 1 is following Deku develop himself as a hero through education, the typical tone of school is that you focus on yourself, and grow with the active help of others. YOI Season 1 is following Yuri develop himself as an ice skater through action, the typical tone of an ice skating show is that you focus on the performers, and grow with the observation of others and helping yourself by learning from them. My Hero Academia and Yuri On Ice are the best.

I think simplistic characterization can be good. But for me, that's only true when characters start like that, and they start developing alongside the progression of the story. When this is done right, I tend to love these type of characterization. There's something really appealing to see kids, naive and simple people get hit by the real world and change because of it, or simply reveal themselves for who they really are. That's probably why I love Gon from HxH in particular.

a lot of what's said here can be extrapolated from one of the very first things said at the beginning of the series. Deku straight up tells us "This is the story of how I became the #1 hero" (or similar), and from there the story goes out of its way to show us this is from his point of view, no one else's. There's a good example of this later on in the manga where two characters have a fight and, because Deku wasn't there when it happened, all we see is the injuries later.

great job on the first video! if you're curious, the Japanese names for each person also really help in enforce every characters simple description like you talked about. if you look at bakugo katsuki, he not only has the kanji for explosion right in his name, but Katsuki has the kanji for win in it and the word Katsuki which means the desire/motivation/will to win is being played on with his name. everyone's names do this, and it makes it even more fun.

I love when someone is able to look at things from afar, observe, think, look at the bigger picture again, try to see the show for what it wants to be, think some more, and THEN talk about it. Finally someone who agrees with how the show is. My friends went only to episode 3or4 of MHA and then they stopped because they hated the week character and how there was no info on the others. I'm like the shows bout how he goes from nothing to a complete badass and I said look at an anime with a classroom setting most main protagonists sit in the way back corner by the window and the only characters u will see his him/her and the other 3 ppl who sit near them Instead of putting them in the middle wear they would have to draw all the other characters. Same goes for this show cause way to much story behind characters makes u stray off from the main point.

That brief pause at the end of every video is such a strong way to transition between the main script and the closing paragraph. It's a clear divide between the main content of the video and any last things the audience might need to know, whether it be news pertaining to the channel or just simply a nice finishing sentence or two about the subject of the video. I know I could comment about this video in particular, but I just randomly found you when my RU-vid front page suggested a video of yours on MHA about Subs VS. Dubs, something I was very interested in. Problem was, I closed my RU-vid app on my phone to do something else and when I reopened it, your video wasn't in my suggestions anymore. I had to do guesswork to find whatever channel it was that uploaded the interesting video I had seen on the front page maybe an hour or so before. I'm glad I put in the extra effort. It's clear you're going to be massively successful as your analysis is well done and something to aspire to. It doesn't come on too strongly. You really make the audience feel welcome to your channel and videos. Keep it up, this is some good stuff, Exclamation Point!

I would agree if establishing motivation was hard, but it would have been super easy to have Mineta say "Someday I'm going to be Mt Lady's sidekick" and there you go, a more fleshed out character.

Something that I think would be an interesting thing to analyze, is that originally the writer wasn't going to have Deku get One for All, he was originally going to be powerless throughout the series, relying on his wits, what strength he can gain on his own, and a few gadgets like a taser to compete with all of his classmates and be a hero. As much as I like My Hero Academia in it's current form I wish I could've seen the version with a powerless Deku who still manages to keep up and become friends with everyone in his class.

Excellent video and I agree with everything ! About Yuri on Ice, I'm a figure skating fan first and foremost and that's why I loved that anime while being extremely surprised that so many people (including anime fans) liked it because... well you say it, on a pure storytelling pacing level, focusing so much on the other skaters makes the story feel clumsier and doesn't give as much room as it needs to tell the story of Yuuri, Victor and Yurio. But on a "rendering the reality, emotion, and feeling of the sport", if they had brushed over the rest of the competitor it wouldn't have been an anime about figure skating. I can't think right now about a sport anime where during the competition the protag isn't performing at the same time as some of the other competitors, while in figure skating (and I think the scene that depicted it the best was the one in the restaurant where everyone ischeering for Yuuri and Victor's engagement one second, then becomes deadly competitive about gold medal the next) who wins depends both on how you perform and on how the others perform : you can win with a very bad skate because everyone else had very bad skates too, or you can lose with the performance of your life because everyone was amazing too. So on the rendition of what the sport is actually like, with the personalities and life stories of each competitor being important, Yuri On Ice makes an incredible job at being actually realistic (and as a skating fans, I watched the Yuri On ice competition with the same intensity I watched real life figure skating competition). But on a "character/story" level, it doesn't balance as well. So I think Yuri on ice is much more a "litteral sport anime" because it's about the sport itself, not so much in the end about the protagonist's personal journey outside of his sport (thoughit's their, but it ends up being more of a sorta important B plot). And it can't really be compared with other sport anime where the sport is more a support for character stories. I was expecting YOI to go the MHA road in the beginning, and it would have been nice to watch as an anime fan. As a skating fan though, I probably would have been disappointed. Anyway, lots of rambling, but keep going ! that was a great video and I'm sorry for going on a ramble about YOI but that comparison really took me by surprise XD

I really loved the first season of BNHA and this video really cleared up some questions how this simplicity makes the show work for its first season, especially since my brother was confused why we were focusing so much on one character and not the others and I couldn't exactly find the words to explain the answer to that question. This was a great video!

MHA is very very similar to Naruto, but with the difference that the author seems to understand cliches and thus know how to use them appropriately. Naruto's weakest aspect was characters to me, while in MyHero it looks like they will actually be explored a lot better. Only gripe I have is with the character of Iida which is an archetype I've seen so many times and I am not so sure it will ever go anywhere.
