Why My Kibbe Image ID Journey is Done & What I've Learned

It’s been a little over a year since I started exploring the Kibbe Image ID body typing system, and I think I can finally say I’m at the end of that journey. My original plan was to make a video about “finally finding my Kibbe ID” by trying on various outfits within the line recommendations for several different types, but that plan was quickly abandoned when I joined the r/Kibbe subreddit and found new information (and a big thank you to the lovely folks on Reddit who responded to my post!). I am not a part of the “Strictly Kibbe” Facebook group, nor do I intend to be; I feel like I’ve learned as much as will be helpful to me at this point in my life, and I’m content to leave it there, so I just wanted to share my thoughts. I really thought this video would be under 10 minutes, but uh... I guess I had a lot of thoughts lol. Be nice, and don’t take this topic too seriously, k?
1. A Brief Timeline: 1:23
2. Trying to ID with Outfits (what this video was originally going to be): 3:19
3. Joining r/Kibbe: 8:43
4. Why I’m Done: 10:00
5. What I’ve learned: 11:45

I totally agree! I've been studying Kibbe system for awhile and since the first seconds after clicking on the video I was like wow such a nicely balanced Yang angularity with overall classic look. I think the problem with some outfit could have been because of the wrong choice of colors which should also be kept in mind. Anyways the work on elimination strategy that has been done is amazing! Cant imagine doing something like this myself =)

Congratulations! You did exactly what people should do with body typing systems. Many do not fit inside one box of rules/“suggestions”. You should wear what feels comfortable, flattering and expressive, of not only your structural features, but also of your creative spirit! Knowing the rules- especially the “don’ts”, teaches us how to break them and create our own individual guidelines. Brilliant job! Subscribing!

You definitely seem like a Dramatic Classic to me. I am a pure Dramatic that went through a phase of thinking I was FG and believing that was what suited me best, even though the comments were like "uh, that's not what we see but go off ig...?" It's totally normal to struggle to see yourself objectively. Also totally possible to feel drawn to the stereotypical style associated with a certain type, even if it's not your most harmonious look! At the end of the day it's just clothes after all, everyone should do what ever makes them happy.

Hello! First time visit to your channel.. I agree with the others that DC looks amazing on you. The FG outfits are fun but your overall vibe is way more sophisticated and I don’t see child-like/boyishness of the gamine. Additionally, I’m not seeing a standout feature on your face congruent with gamine - your facial features are incredibly balanced and womanly. Also, your hair style and color are amazing in you. Not many can rock the symmetry of a middle part and curtain bangs like that! Another node to DC in my mind...

Love this - reflected exactly how I’ve felt. Kibbe’s been so helpful in explaining why outfits which I love on other people just don’t look right on me. I’d kind of worked out what suited me through the years but understanding why some patterns and shapes work and some don’t was a game-changer. But definitely don’t feel I have to wear only my ‘type’. By the way, that black dramatic classic dress looks amazing on you!

The best thing about Kibbe is that he encourages women to value and dress for their body as is, and not to try to fit a specific aesthetic ie wear one colour to look taller, etc. Not all of us look good in black from head to foot! Personally I mostly follow the recommendations for my “type” FG but do it in a classic way, so I’m now also going to call myself a Flamboyant Classic. Thanks for the new point of view. From a Kibbe nerd. 🤓💞

Completely agree!! The system is just a guide to help us to find our personal style. It's a good guide and yes, it helps to minimize mistakes and it helps to understand WHY some lines do not work. And let's not forget the essence!! Yes, I do think you have moderate lines, but what is classic in 2021?? We are not here to copy the 1960 icons. You did good!!! Own your style. And D. Kibbe deserves the credit for his help;)))

You really look best in Dramatic Classic clothes. But, of course, you do you. It’s your own freedom to choose what to wear. Maybe flamboyant gamine is psychologically more similar to your personality. I’ve recently heard of Larson types. She added 6 more types to Kibbe’s 13 types, so she has 19. Maybe you can find the right one for you there ❤️

Great take on this system. I feel similarly. But I'm a Soft Classic. It's the don'ts that do help because then it leaves the rest. For me, a SC, that means my sleeves tapering in towards my wrists really does work on me. No more bell sleeves. That was easy and I saw for myself hte difference. Then there was cleaner lines rather than a lot going on, which also works best. Nothing too loose or too tight. Some waiste emphasis. Then there are the romantic leaning accessories but not all at once. I'm 12 weeks past my being typed and these are basically what I do. It works for me, but I go into other types if I like somehting. I found your ending rather amusing. Very good video!

I find Kitchener style essences to be much better than Kibbe. And there are just 7 types (most people are usually a combo of two or 3 of these types too). With Kitchener, it’s possible to be a classic-gamine

Only recently discovered Kibbe Types and went down a damn rabbit hole trying to understand how something so incredibly vague could have such a following and got absolutely sucked into determining my type before I was "allowed to leave" (why, self? Why.) And then your video was the total dream result I didn't yet realize I needed. As someone who nerds out on typology in general and has fun playing with different ways humans make sense (particularly making sense of myself), Kibbe just baffled me, *even when I sometimes got a result I liked*. So, thank you. From the bottom of my heart, Thank You, because this beautifully sound reasoning gave me permission to MOVE ON 😂💓🥰

I do totally agree with your conclusion.. After getting confused about different body types even I feel that instead of putting urself in a box it's more about understanding what definitely doesn't work for you.. And also a combination of your personality and your own unique style sense.. And be able to create a hormonious wardrobe out of it.. Also agree on taking inspiration from other body types as well, especially when they reflect your personal style.. 😊

I love your attitude and really agree with your points on the pros and cons of the Kibbe system. Plus, while I agree with others that the DC lines seem to look the most natural or harmonious on you, I also think looking “harmonious” is only one aspect of what we look for when dressing ourselves.

This was actually really helpful. I got professionally typed (not by Kibbe) 3 times, all with "Soft Natural" as a result. I do feel very harmonious with that typing but I personally really like and tend to gravitate towards TR or straight R when I'm wanting to "dress up" or look sexy. I could definitely see leaning in to soft classic as I age and want a more conservative style. All this to say....I like your blob system and think I'll adopt that mentality myself. It's okay to be a Soft Natural who leans into TR lines in my 30s and maybe more SC lines in my 50s. Still suits me. So, thank you for your video and for sharing your journey!

As you said, it help us to realize why something is not for us in more definite terms. And also helps to realize our innate preferences that can go out of the 'type'. I personally liked FG options on you. But I'm biased because I am pulled towards FG myself.

I enjoyed this! You might like a RU-vidr named Beauty As Being, who dips her toe into all sorts of systems (Kibbe, color seasons, facial beauty essences, Kitchener....) and combines them in interesting ways. In my own experience with Kibbe and other systems, I like when a system offers a new way of thinking and I do try to suspend my preconceived notions in order to learn, but I draw the line at being dissuaded from using my own common sense. To a degree, I do know what looks good on me and I do know when to disagree with "the experts" (who are just people with opinions, like me).

I saw your video in my recommended and it's pretty interesting. I've been spending alot of time recently trying to learn about the body types and at this point I see how specific lines can complement a body but not how a very short description of those lines can define a person's personality or essence. I think you can take the ideas of "playfulness" from a flamboyant gamine's "essence" whilst having lines and silhouettes of dramatic classic.

The personality descriptions that were originally in Mr Kibbe’s book honestly should just be ignored 🤷‍♀️ from my understanding, he doesn’t even use them anymore himself. Any “personality descriptions” should be derived from your own unique traits :)

Oh my God, I SO vibe with this video. I initially took Aly Art’s test and got Dramatic Classic. When I started watching her videos I became convinced I was a Soft Natural because those clothes looked best on me. Then, as an experiment, I uploaded a photo of myself onto the Kibbe subreddit and was *universally* told I was a Flamboyant Gamine. But gamine lines literally look the WORST on me??? Don’t get me wrong, I think gamine outfits and looks are super quirky and adorable, but they just make me look so boxy and I can’t get behind them. If I had my way, I’d just wear Dramatic lines ‘cause I think they’re the coolest. *sigh* I don’t know what to think anymore. I feel like I don’t belong anywhere now.

I applaud your patience with all these systems! I remember findng Alyart's viral vids and then flailing down the rabbithole in regret. I remember when all that first came out that I would have to wait a while for the WWWeb to discover more info because what was available did not help my confusion. Like you said, so many overlap or contradict and when any system imo does that, it automatically fails. The rules of a system should be more clear and if its too philosophical then it is extremely hypothetical and not useful yet. I never got help and felt so frustrated by the confusion. In my very short journey which is why I ultimately stopped looking into it but now curious where it is now.. here's the thing, the main thing for me - Almost everything minus very few odd tops or flouncy tops n dresses looks good on me when I am fitspo yasss but if I'm not like that and my hair is a mess.. very few styles suit me The fact that many fit me and many felt comfortable when I'm in shape was very hard for me to look at seriously. The idea of someone being petite gamine when audrey tatou is actually quite tall also puzzled me. The idea of typing just models or scarjo and marylin was hard for me to see. The obsession with golden ratio aka classic made me upset as well because imo, its rare and critical for most because its basically saying you're crap to be asymmetrical in any way... In any case, I'm actually drawn to styles that are dramatic/flamboyant and fun or even dark but just where I live is hard to get away with it and most of it never looks good unless I am very very fit. On a regular basis though, i prefer cozy, soft feminine, mod/retro or tomboy/sporty casual looks which are all very different but all look and feel good. I have been complimented on many styles and nearly had a career in fashion for both modeling or designer even tho I preferred designer. I think women in general have SO much pressure on them as it is to now have some oracle of this bs tell us how we should dress ffs. The fact that Aly suggests you to wear certain jewelry, makeup, glasses or bangs? Its laughable but also kinda toxic because nobody wants to feel boxed in like that. I think A lines, capsule wardrobes or styles from certain eras and other things like that can work for most people but some of this stuff imo is very unhealthy and we already deal with enough standards and pressures on us especially with our looks but other parts and expectations to who we are as well (having kids, sexuality, walk n talk) I've contemplated seeing professional typing help but spending the $ seems like a waste. I'll prob keep on exploring whats new with the system but I'm happy that you share my sentiments that alot of us want to feel free to experiment.

As soon as I saw you, I recognized Dramatic Classic. For about 20 years I went with Kibbe off and on, and it just didn't work. I didn't understand the system, Reddit people and similar forums didn't understand it, and even Kibbe intuited a lot of it. I have had FAR better luck understanding Kibbe firstly as a broad body-only outline in which the ratio of the proportions within the body define the type. And then secondly, I consider the face/head within the "essences" system of John Kitchener as the controlling modifier of the basic type. The body determines the basic proportions and silhouette of your best garments, but the face/head influences the kind of fabric, details, prints, etc. So....yes...you seem to be firstly Classic, but you might want to test fabrics and details within that framework. I was struck by your "type" because I just typed someone who is quite similar, only with slightly stronger, sculpted features. I wondered why she looked outstanding in Jackie Kennedy-type 60s clothing but also pretty good in a softer, flowing dress (more Soft Classic). The fact is that Dramatic Classics (or Classics in general) can lean into other looks a little anyway because they are so moderate--just so they don't go very far away from their best lines. After that, the personality figures into the mix. So you might want to experiment with the basic Classic silhouette and then see how much Dramatic you can add in the accessories without unbalancing your look. Then try other kinds of details with the basic Classic vibe: Gamine, Natural, etc., etc. See which ones look the best and which best represent who you are. P.S. Someone mentioned the Larson system. I tried that, too, once and it didn't work for me either. Maybe does for some. If you have "Angelic" or "Ethereal" essence you will still not find yourself there. Try Gabrielle Arruda's channel and it might help.

Based on your outfits trying, I would agree with Dramatic Classic lines suiting you the best... Even the t-shirt you're wearing in the video gives classic family vibes. I think the problem with the dramatic classic symmetric pocket shirt is that the brown colour is very soft and warm for you. You're much brighter and cool toned. Also I would say the FG dresses look good on you, but there is maturity, slight innocence, seriousness and sharpness to your ID, that makes you a clear dramatic classic, I think. From a FG I would just expect to get a more youthful feeling. It is so difficult see ourselves objectively. I'm not sure about my own ID but think I'm 80 percent there. And maybe that's enough.. It's actually great that you can make this video and ask the internet. Awesome video, Thank you!

I am done with Kibbe nitpicking too. Now I know what I knew before without realising it. I am FN who likes FG vibes and for some reason they fit me if I incorporate them wisely. I like my own type recommendations as well but only when done with intentionality. I don't like this stif style boxes and celebrity examples. They are confusing and toxic. The thing I am the most grateful about this journey is that now I enjoy how tall I am. Also now I know for sure, that I don't need to try too hard to be "feminine" with dainty and frilly outfits, because they make me look ridiculous. And I always knew that too. I also realised why I have always disliked "balance" and "symmetry" in my outfits. Everyone should listen their inner voice first. You look great in FG clothes.

I'm reasonably confident that I'm a soft classic with a little bit of "natural" undertones peeking through because I have a blunt chin and slightly broad shoulders. i have found the system really helpful in streamlining my style but there are a lot of rules I totally ignore. Even though I'm 'soft classic,' too many frills or lace or ruffles look disorganized on me. Instead I emphasize softness in fabrics--lightweight knits and silk crepes--and patterns. Delicate floral patterns or faint stripes, in otherwise pretty streamlined silhouettes.

I know for sure that I'm not gonna start wearing tailored clothes and blazers and stuff all the time... Same with seasonal color analysis. My coloration is very "ashy" like yours and therefore I found it very difficult to determine my undertone. But I did it, started wearing warm muted colors, problem solved :D

I definitely agree that if you go through these theories and still like dressing in what doesn't "suit" you, then just keep dressing that way. If yellow isn't your most flattering colour but you want to wear it, wear it. If cardigans aren't the most flattering on you, but you want to wear them, wear them. These theories can be super helpful for those of us who want to find things that look better on us, but I agree that sometimes we get too caught up in it and it can be more frustrating than what it's worth. I'm apparently a SN but I feel more drawn to classic or gamine recommendations for my personality. I definitely like your idea of having a sort of "core" and then if we wish to borrow from the close surrounding types we can, Sort of like how some people say that you can have secondary colour seasons. I just feel so very much not myself when I dress in a lot of SN recommendations.

I understand what you are saying. I always have idolized the 70s rock stars and wanted to be a bohemian princess. But I struggles wearing those clothes. I found kibbe and have been typed as a soft dramatic, so I've learned those FN lines just don't work for me. I've also done face analysis which says I'm a romantic gamine in my face. Which makes sense for me because I understand the long lines but I always feel like I want to break my line and want to incorporate more of a natural rock and roll edge. I've found that if I break my line higher with a higher waist pant or shirt I can color block be better. As long as I have that waist and hip emphasis I can color block and still feel good. I just don't feel good in the same color head to toe. And I've been finding some ways to work in glam rock into my wardrobe. I'm 5'6 so I "cant" be a gamine but with the facial beauty and essence stuff I'm able to work those things in. So for you you might be a DC but you might have gamine essence or whatever that allows you too pull from that as well. It makes more sense to me to mash up a bunch of systems because yeah we can't all be the same 13 types. I know some SD that we have complete different looks some are more dramatic, im more romantic

I feel like even the things you picked out as flamboyant gamine outfits were simple outlines that suit a DC, just not boring colors. I think it’s ok if you like simple outlines but fun patterns. But also, yeah, just wearing stuff you like on is always the best route to take.

I hear you. I'm a minimalist, laid back Soft Gamine, unless I'm a cutesy Soft Classic, or a miniature, rather refined Soft Natural. But thanks to Kibbe I now echo my round self in curved necklines, usually, instead of contending with my roundness in V-neckilines, and he's right, the round clothes suit me better. If I know what I'll enjoy wearing, I don't need to know what to call it.

I’ve only been at the kibbe system for a week and I was already starting to feel this way. I find it really odd how he constrains the heights. I’m 5’8.5” and basically was told I could be only one of the 3 tallest ones but the facial features I have are more classic. I was typed as a soft dramatic which I can se in my body but I don’t think I have anything exotic looking about me and most of my facial features are small and not bigger like they say a SD would be. I sometimes wonder if Kibbe was off because he himself is kinda short for a dude.

Hi, I have just found out your yt, 5 minutes ago, and I understand completely the frustration of your kibbe voyage. The thing is, I can quite easily find which kibbe style other people are, but to find my own..I can recognize myself in your dilemma haha. After 1 minute even if you wouldn't mention I felt that you are some sort of classic, but your energy is quite gamine, so I am sure now you are really FG. And about the height, we have to remember, that new generations of people are higher than they use to be. When you visit museums you see that windows, doors, and clothes are for smaller body size, so it can be that as a human race, we are getting higher and /or bigger....also, when you say you are not 100 % into FG...I believe that is because the system is not perfect, and it shouldn't be dogmatic. Instead, it has some interesting points and qualities, and if you are lucky enough to find out your body type , you can play and explore with stuff from your group, have fun, and listen to your intuition, and how other people feel you, and how you feel in some outfit. And finally, some of your FG outfits in this video needs some pop of color to be more quirky and ironic. I imagine it would look so good on you. OK, Thanks for your video, and have fun. :D Adieu

I'm a soft classic that likes soft natural clothes. And I'm fine using SN with modifications. I adapted some things to suit my lines. I always use belts (I already did that before the test). I have come to terms that messy hair is not for me. I tried for years and always looked sloppy. Not sexy and casual. Now I know why. That way I can Still wear clothes that suits my style and personality and my lines.

I am in the exact same feeling right now. I am 5,6” also but I have a really youthful gamine face/essence but my body is closer to DC, I feel a little too ‚not myself‘ in some DC lines but I honestly think both recommendations honour narrow, sharp, small features like ankles and wrists so you can probably pull on both. I’d say you have a cool and sophisticated essence which leans you more DC - at the end of the day if I want to wear bows, collars and mini skirts I’m gonna 😌☺️ x

I’m with ya. It’s hard to pigeon hole ourselves into precise boxes - it’s not that simple. For example, I have a softer body, but athletic broad shoulders. My head is pretty small… 😅 and doesn’t fit my body - my facial features are rather gamine- and almost fairy-like. I love short hair, which fits my face, but not my body. BUT I really like how I look in drapey lines like what fits the Naturals. 🤷🏻‍♀️ It’s like the Universe gathered up scraps and patch-worked me together. It can be frustrating bc I really wanted some structure to help me define my style. Unfortunately, I don’t really fit anywhere.

I think the typing system is only good for going shopping, to save you time on what kind of clothings you should be looking for. I tried a skirt that was "out of my lines", and while I loved the colour, the lenght and the type of skirt, it just didn't look right on me. And it made sense that it didn't. Before I started typing myself I would spend hours trying on clothing and be dissapointed when they didn't look right on me. Now i can judge if something will look nice on me without having to try it on first. Saves me both time and dissapointment! I don't like the idea of locking yourself in a "type" as there are so many different bodies the categories can't count for them all. I personally have at the moment typed myself as a Dramatic Classic. I have bony yang but the flesh is quite yin-like, but this was the only one where the weight/fat gain part made sense. I honestly do think I'm more leaning towards theatrical romantic, but I'm too tall for that. So while i do "type" myself as DC, i don't care if things are in 'my lines' or not, it just makes everything easier when shopping.

Thanks for sharing! I think any theory that gets you putting more thought into what suits you and what doesn't will be helpful in the long run, but in the end you have to let go of someone else's definition of what you body type and style are supposed to be. They never completely fit do they?

I relate to all of this so much! I’m pretty sure I’m theatrical romantic, but I might be a soft gamine🤷🏻‍♀️ I’m pretty sure I’m bright warm and deep in what colors look good on me, but I might be soft warm and medium🤷🏻‍♀️ Now, I’m just trying to avoid what I know don’t look good in, what lines I know I’ve liked on me before, and what colors I know I’ve looked good in. Also, I actually really liked the flutter sleeves on that green dress on you, but meh, who am I but just some stranger on the Internet, who feels confused by this system more than anything else, so🤷🏻‍♀️😬🤣

Are you me? Lol. I am in the same situation Kibbe and color season wise. I think McJimsey's Ingenue is the closest archetype to myself and kind of seems like a softer...soft gamine. A bit too sweet at times. I combine all these and some ethereal. I am my own type! There are so many unexplored variables and this system does not cater to all body shapes and sizes. Take for example Truth in beauty. One can be Dramatic Classic Gamine or Classic Gamine in it, like OP feels like.

this is a healthy way of thinking about Kibbe ♡ it is a very helpful and fun system... until it causes obsession and sleepless nights in womens head struggling to categorize themselves... which is totally against what the whole system is for. I agree that height actually counts in the way we dress and at the same time Kibbe is not God just a human, his system is brilliant but not the Bible. There are billions of people on the planet, clearly you can't fit them all by yin-yang balance in these 13 or now even less... IDs. it should be used as fun and some help in a way we dress and how we want to express ourselves, not the ultimate guide and rules we must decide about ourselves and then follow strictly for the rest of our lives. God bless you all ♡

As a DC, I see you as a fellow DC, although I agree with and appreciate your multi-type approach. I like to borrow from other types I like (love SD and D), but I notice I have to keep it more contained so I don’t disappear into the look. Also, I wonder if your love for FG means you can be more edgy/editorial in your interpretation of DC. I love the DC outfits you have shown, but I think they are closer to classic than DC. Makeup can also bring that drama (and I adore Aly Art’s video for DCs).

I'm still not sure if I'm a flamboyant natural or a soft dramatic. I was settled in fn but I gained weight during quarantine and my body looks so much more sd to me now. I've been studying my type for years and I actually initially disregarded SD because I didnt think I was strong nor feminine enough to pull it off so It's pretty Ironic. I had a lot of preconceived stereotypes about sd and I was wrong about a lot of things now that I've sat down and actually studied it. It's not actually about tight clothes, waist emphasis, and sharpness at all.
