At the 3:37 mark, we address the free throw thing. Yes, fouls play a part (as they always have) but it’s only a fraction of the story. Pls give a watch and let us know what you think. Happy New Year!

Carrying the ball and moving screens are allowed. IMHO these are the two huge issues that are resulting in more open threes and being able to beat people off the dribble. Defenders don't have a chance. Being able to change direction by carrying the ball over a high moving screen... good luck defending that. Loving your channel!

By the way, I am usually not the moralizing type and tend to be quite libertarian. But at the same time, I have seen gambling addiction close up and think that the entertainment vs competition dynamic in the nba is unstable. Both forces are at work, it is always a question of how much. I am a Hornets fan. They do need to win to sell tickets People go to watch the big star go off on them. They are happy to do it. Many are just as happy to have Lebron or Curry come in and score 50 on them. They get to tell their friends about it the next day. It is entertaining. The gambling aspect adds to this entertainment dynamic--will Paul George score over 23 pts tonight? Likewise, the Hornets would probably make more money if the big market teams get in the finals and they keep their salaries down. Finals ratings are everything. Conclusion: the hornets are essentially entertainment and the league has to decide if they make more money as entertainment or as competition. It is a fine line. They need enough competition for the credibility and have to find ways to keep it about competition, but they are only incentivized to do this up to a certain point. Am I off? Would love to hear a pod about this? It would explain a lot about what the average fans sees going on. By the way, I still love it, and I still think we get the best basketball in the world during playoff time!

I love actual analysis. JJ is a godsend. There’s too many old-head fans who base their takes upon nostalgia & biased “eye-test” instead of what’s actually happening. This is the most talented era of basketball and has been since around at least 2010. It’s not a lack of defense; it’s an increase in production & skill on the offensive end that makes it tougher to defend. It’s why you won’t ever see anyone reach win Bill Russell levels of championships. I doubt we’ll see anyone even hit SIX unless it’s someone like Curry or LeBron who have been playing for a long time & won the bulk of their titles 7 to 10 years ago. It’s just what it is.

They’re not calling travels, walks, carries for one. For two, rule changes like the shot clock resetting after OFF rebound which gives even more possessions now than the change of offensive style already gives. Defensive rule changes where they can barely even respond to contact with contact, they have to try and basically just never touch or bump the offensive player while they skip and travel. & I’m a big James Harden fan but damn. The ANT spin post fade away was a bigass travel just for example. He slid his pivot foot so damn far lol but the league itself is pushing the move as a highlight.

The game is different. Some of that is better offense, of course. Modern offenses with lots of ball movement and 3 point shooting are more efficient than the old ISO ball. However, defensive rule changes, fouls and lack of travel calls are making an even bigger difference. I like looking at Euroleague stats because they are playing under the same rules as 20 years ago. Average points per game a team scores has increased by about 3-4ppg, mostly due to more threes. In the NBA however the average increased by almost 20ppg. It's a whole different game of basketball they are playing today.

@phantomdancer3279
@phantomdancer3279 5 месяцев назад
@@MeLoveParisHilton u just beat ur own argument… the 3 top European players are all in the nba.. the talent always finds itself going to the nba. Meanwhile u got journeymen playing in euro league. U can’t expect bench type players to average the same numbers as stars. And another factor u didn’t consider is the spacing, the best shooters are also in the nba. These players open the floor more too and 5 out offenses is a bit reason the center role has been nullified by a huge margin as a center can’t just sit the paint, he has to be able to guard outside and when he goes out it opens the paint.
@MeLoveParisHilton
@MeLoveParisHilton 5 месяцев назад
@@phantomdancer3279 Bro, I just told you that USA with all its stars got beaten multiple times in the world cup by teams comprised mostly of players who play outside of the NBA. @shorewall
@shorewall 5 месяцев назад
Talent levels should be relative. If the Euroleague is less talented, or the NBA is more talented, they are competing internally, so it should be consistent. If the NBA is so much more talented, then why does defense suck in the NBA? It has to do with the differences in rules.

I don't know what a Jordanshian is, but zone defence as a whole was illegal. Now it's pretty well the only thing you see, it conserves energy on defence and is easier for an offence to break through, thus creating more points. Shall I continue? What about the hand-checking rule? That change alone made defence obsolete allowing offences to thrive. I sPeAk FaCt EnOuGh? Now, since you were quick to judge, can you: - Provide any evidence that the NBA's viewership isn't at record lows, year over year - Provide any evidence that todays NBA isn't primarily focused on offence rather than defence? Changing the time of possession after a team gets an offensive rebound is also a contributing factor to the faster pace and more possessions. The shot clock would always reset at 24 seconds if a team got an offensive rebound for a second chance at getting a bucket. They changed it to only 14 seconds now after an offensive rebound, which basically eliminated “holding the ball” during the final moments of a close game. Teams are now forced to make plays with the limited time after the offensive rebounds.

I look at it as we are playing the same game as the late 70s early 80s before all of the really dominant giants came back to the league. Only difference is we utilize the 3 point line where as back then jumpers were all still from mid range due to players just not having that kind of range on them yet. But if you look at all the plays we run, iso moves we use we are built off what happened just inside the 3 pt line. Now the perimeter game has truly transitioned outside the arc. The area that was once filled by back doors and back screens is now filled with driving lanes and/or pick and roll action to force rotations for layups and wide open jumpshots.
@PanzehVideos
@PanzehVideos 5 месяцев назад
It's funny, the defensive schemes have gotten a lot better and more complicated, with x-out rotations and such, but there's always some questions the offense can ask that it's very difficult to answer- it is very, very difficult to run PnR defense when just about every ball handler can pull up for 3 and almost every roll man can dribble and make the short roll pass at the very least, if not score. I appreciate it- we've also gotten so much better at focusing the offense on featured players instead of some notion of 'balance' where Eric Snow runs PnRs too because he's a guard.

Offenses are hard to stop today because basketball knowledge has been discovered with evidence based approach. And the knowledge is spread, refined, over the years, and young players get to learn the skills that have worked for those who came before. Yes, people shoot more 3s, or do more DHOs, or do X, Y or Z more or less than before… but the specifics of WHAT they do more are less important than WHY they do stuff more: because they now have the ability to accurately determine how well stuff works, what results in more points, what doesn’t work. Even if players were actually worse athletes than 90s (and they’re not. They’re better athletes now), the teams of today would still score more, because they have the knowledge base to make better decisions in the court, to run plays that score most, to take shots that score most. Some people look at analytics as voodoo, but it’s just evidence based basketball: “does A work? Exactly how well does A work? Does A work better than B? Prove it.”

The offensive players are now allowed to carry the ball, travel, foul bait (offensive foul) and the gather step, while defenses have been handicapped more than ever. Make it make sense!there’s a reason why we haven’t even been medaling in FIBA with clearly better talent on the floor and it’s because we glorify iso ball and entertainment vs team ball and fundamentals. Yes players are more skilled today, BUT, I would attribute the scoring to primarily the defensive rules imposed by the NBA itself and I think they will have to be changed at some point before the NBA is unwatchable. In addition, players are allowed to carry the ball at an obscene amount which makes the pick and roll un-guardable and other scenarios. I also think at times players allow other players to “get theirs” to help drive contracts upwards for everyone and that’s a result of a more friendly and social media connected NBA.

Guys routinely take four steps, change pivot foot, shuffle their feet to get aligned, stroll into a shot without dribbling, eurostep out of a full blown travel, etc. Traveling is barely a rule at all, no matter what you do. Massive gap between this and lower level ball. Not the same game in some basic ways.

An even shorter answer is that everyone in basketball now recognizes the efg value of the bail out 3, and vast majority of possessions, an offense should be able to get a bail out 3 (.330, but worth .495 efg) or better. So no matter what you’re running, even just the threat of the bail out 3 forces defenses to play looser on everything else. How many possessions do you see fantastic lockdown D for 20 seconds… get bailed out with a 3 at the shot clock buzzer?

Solution: each team gets 40 three point attempts a game. Use them whenever you want - burn through all 40 in the first 40 minutes? Tough luck. Want to save 20 of them for the 4th Q? Go for it. Would add a fascinating layer of strategy on when and who can use them and cut down scoring and give defenses a chance.

Rules are probably 20-35% of it. The rest is more skill, better tactics, and better athletes. The 90's rules enabled and favored iso's and two players pick and roll. I, for one, am extremely glad the NBA eliminated the old illegal defense rule.

The post ups were only there because of illegal defence. Did you know that during the zeroes 20/30 teams shot below 40% on mid range shots? And they took 30 mid range shots per game. Interesteing data, thank you. What caught my attention, was that if the free throw is the most effective form of attack, doesn't that further emphasize the meaning of the post-up? Like, train young guys to play in the post, make them earn free throws and then knock them down. At least to me it looks like the only reason the post-up isn't attractive to teams is the fact that young guys today don't have the necessary skills nor mindset to be dominant down low. Everyone only wants to shoot threes. Coaches, do better. Teach all aspects of the game.

Redick, taking in consideration the analisis tou have done Can you explain why Jokic is so effective ?
@cookiesforlunch
@cookiesforlunch 5 месяцев назад
So I dug into the season by season stats out of curiosity. Super interesting but it pretty much backs up what JJ is saying for the most part. So first, best offense for JJ means points scored I think. Because in terms of efficiency, the 80s and oddly the early 90s (even though the 90s were known for low scoring and slow physical games), were actually the most efficient offenses. Efficient being Field goal attempts and your field goal percentage. Now the really interesting part is the data actually says we aren't really taking that many more shots nowadays. The league avg FGA per team is only 7-10 more FGA per game depending on the season. And the FG% has stayed pretty consistent across seasons as well (44-47%) excluding the 80s where teams had 48-50% field goal percentages. But putting those two things together means players are scoring at the same efficiency no matter the era, but getting more attempts and scoring way more points. The only way to explain that would be rule changes that allow players to get downhill and into the lane, which increases pace of play. And also an increase in good shots taken, which now includes the three points shot. And players that can make shots at the same efficiency as layups and mid range jumpers which were highly emphasized in the earlier generations. So it's not really that players are better these days as much as they are taking better shots and making better shots. And because they know they're going to get good shots, they're training their skillsets around shot making and driving. But this is coaching and philosophy.
@tairoberts8435
@tairoberts8435 5 месяцев назад
Fg% is a terrible way to measure efficiency. If you go 4/10 from two you get 8 points and you're playing badly, but if you're 4/10 from three, you're playing great. Look up true shooting percentage if you want to talk about efficiency. Last year's was a record high at 58.1%, far above the 53-54% that was standard across the 80's and 90's while being almost 7% better than the early 2000's. For context, 7% is Joel Embiid's shooting percent above average this year. The average player today is shooting as if they were Joel Embiid when compared to the players of the early 2000's, which is insane.
@cookiesforlunch
@cookiesforlunch 5 месяцев назад
@@tairoberts8435You are correct and I did use that first but I felt that true shooting percentage had a bias towards modern day and certain types of players due to the increase in three point shooting and spacing caused by rule changes. I know it's supposed to adjust and account for threes and FTs but TS% doesn't have a way to account for different eras with different rules sets. It's designed for comparing current players against each other not really across eras. There was also a weird FTA discrepancy by era which affects comparing TS% across eras. How much it affects, I didn't want to spend the time figuring out since this is just based on pure interest. But that's all besides the point really. Even if you used TS% that doesn't help explain the why's behind the better offenses, just that they have a better TS%. I also misspoke/made a mistake looking at the data. Teams in general weren't more efficient in the 80s and early 90s but certain teams were (Lakers, Celtics, Bulls, Nuggets, Magic). And that's based on TS%, or FG%. My guess is that's because they all had historic star players that could score at will and efficiently, even with those rules. Based on TS% teams are more efficient nowadays though, I'm just not sure how that translates across eras. If a team in the 80s-2010s has similar TS% with those rules and spacing, should we give them a correctional bump and say they're just as if not more efficient due to the differences in rules and philosophy?
@tairoberts8435
@tairoberts8435 5 месяцев назад
@@cookiesforlunch generally speaking, you can't jump eras with any type of scientific accuracy. The offenses of the day were designed to attack the defenses of the era, and the defenses were made to attack the offenses of that era. Dropping a team like the 2024 Suns into the 90's would result in the Suns promptly taking over the league, purely due to their schematic advantage. Teams back then would see a skinny 7-footer and tell their bigs to back up and hit him hard as soon as he steps foot in the paint. Unfortunately for those teams, Kevin Durant shoots over 40% on open threes. When you want to talk about efficiency, you have to do it compared to the league average at the time. For example, if the average true shooting of a player in 1980 was 54%, we would compare individual players to that number. If he shot +6, (incredible efficiency) he would reach 60%. That exact same percent today, would only be +2, or above average. That's how you correct for eras when discussing player value. Time machine hypotheticals don't work simply because of how much the game has changed.
@cookiesforlunch
@cookiesforlunch 5 месяцев назад
@@tairoberts8435 I agree with the first point about jumping eras with any accuracy. After that I'm a little confused because you argued against time machine hypotheticals but used a time machine hypothetical in the 2024 Suns. Also I don't think that example works anyways, in fact it proves the exact opposite of what you were saying. Kevin Durant started on the Sonics in 07/08 and the knock on his first few years was that he settled for too many threes and long jumpers and couldn't get to the paint (partially because of rules allowing hand checking and more physicality). Also defenses did try to defend him how you said at first but continued to adapt to how he played. So you can't assume they'd just play the same against a team dropped into the 90s and allow them to chuck up wide open threes. They'd quickly adapt to run them off the three point line. Except the spacing wouldn't be like it was today because everything would be a step or two slower due to the physicality. Part of what creates the open three is the speed at which current players get downhill and into the paint. And the three creates spacing, which leads to open driving lanes on the rotation. That was all enabled by the rules against hand checking and limiting what you could physically do to the ball handler. That's why JJ and other players say Offensive players have a definitive advantage nowadays, because you can't touch them nowadays if they have the ball in their hands. Add in a screen and rim dive and you can pretty much get in the paint at top speed on every play. Your point on efficiency is correct but only when comparing within decades. So comparing like Hakeem and Jordan to league average of the 90s. Or Jokic and Luka to league average of today. When you started crossing eras you made a mistake. Which is that you have to also take into account the inverse. Meaning what would say Jordan look like or Magic look like if they got to play with these rules and this kind of space, were surrounded by an extra shooter or two, and adjusted their games to optimize their shot selection. Magic would probably have 20 20 20 triple doubles with all the extra space. Jordan is more athletic than anyone in the league besides Andrew Wiggins (his jump records still stand at the draft combine to this day) and he'd get into the lane at a higher rate than anyone currently playing. Or imagine Kobe and Shaq If you couldn't touch them on their drives and had this kind of spacing and an extra shooter or two in the team. They were already unguardable. My point being you can't expect their stats to stay the same in the modern day. They'd all have a much higher TS% playing now. So how do we account for that?
@codyschexnider3863
@codyschexnider3863 5 месяцев назад
If you don’t think flops and free throws are a primary staple of today’s offensive players, then you’ve clearly never watched Fox from Sacramento play, and you’ve clearly never watched the entire Lakers roster play, and you’ve DEFINITELY never watched any OKC game. Those are teams that built their entire offensive identity around flopping and getting the majority of their points from the free throw line. Denver is also guilty of that at times.
