The volume to efficiency ratio is incredible. Not even talking about scoring. The amount of points at the basket Jokic creates for his teammates is historic. He is the entire offense.
yes, Joker definitely plays bully ball and so did players in the 90s. But he gets called for offensive fouls and plenty of super minor offenses while constantly getting bear mauled with no whistle (and still scoring with unreal efficiency through heavy contact) and even gets ejected because of frustration with these crooked refs! If they were fair and consistent, Joker would have roughly the same # of fouls and draw 3-5 more per game, 5-10 more with the LeBalco or Embiid whistle
This video made me realize Jokic really breaks the game by being the best midrange scorer and passer at the same time. Usually to get the most efficient shot you need to be close to the basket or three point line, but Jokic operating in midrange is such a boost to his teammates since he leaves the paint open and also leaves the three point line more open and he makes the perfect passes.
Jokic is singlehandedly changing my whole idea of basketball at the highest level. Previously, I thought basketball was 70% physical/athletics and 30% smarts but the Joker is the exact opposite. Man is an actual basketball savant with fairly limited speed, strength and agility but he CANT BE STOPPED.
Jokic is extremely agile. I don't get the narratives that Jokic and Luka aren't athletic just because they are slow and white. Their balance, agility and overall body control is the best is the league.
He's not that physically weak. He is big and strong. If he wasn't, he wouldn't be able to make such passes across the pitch or over the heads of other players.
Also use that thinking to reframe what you think of being physical/athletic. Jokic has some amazing physical and athletic capabilities, it’s just he uses his brain to do some things that others players just use athleticism for. E.g. the fact this man’s feet actually rarely leave the floor, meaning he’s always able to be a half step quicker cause he’s already gathered and set on his feet constantly
@@suhailrefaye92 Hakeem is substantially a better defender. However when you can do quite literally everything on offense and are average at best at defense, I think that makes up for it
Hakeem isn’t just substantially better on defense. He’s quite arguably the best ever. As skilled as Jokic is I don’t think it makes up for that level of defense.
@@redmangoose182 Yeah I don’t recall Duncan wanting to just go home after winning a chip. Even tho he was reserved and quiet like jokic, he simply cared more. Just never seen a player of his caliber treat this like a 9-5😂.
@@fridgetestimonies3004 thats a total misconception thats been dispelled though. Jokic is just as obsessed as any great player. He probably isn’t one for reveling in the spotlight and celebration. He shows his passion in his game and definitely gets heated at times. When he wins, his mind just goes to other duties lol.
@@AHMAD-2324nigga who cares. Thats team success and individual success. Cant be that lucky to have the best team every year. Show me one player who got a ring every year they played.
The craziest pass i’ve seen from him is that 3/4 court out of bonds lob pass on a dime to AG against memphis i believe. This dude is crazy he’s in my top 5 passers ever
If he didn't play center position he would average 15 assists a game. He have point guards in his team that do well assisting as well, so comparing center to the point guards in assist numbers in this video to prove or disprove anything is just silly. He is super efficient player that does not slow his offense, it really opens the game and celling is much higher, a true definition of a team player.
Some people don’t want to have this conversation. The casual fan doesn’t like someone who can’t break someone’s ankles, dunks on someone, or shoots a 50 ft 3
Most fans nowadays won’t even want to consider the fact their favorites will be surpassed someday. They’ll put on their blinders and just spew out hate
Whayt!?!?! After 10 years of playing in the NBA with his size, and with the smart players around him. Yes, maybe. But when they lost to Spurs the other day. It just showed that if Wemby also has the same smart and good players around him, jokic is nothing in front of Wemby. Plus when he plays, he's already tall and bulky, but always pushes and use his elbows and gets away with it. Jokic is a shit.
He is not the only passer who can make that pass honestly. He is an absolute monster passer tho. Him and Luka would end up 1A and 1B in term of passers tho
Jokic’s advance stats are actually ridiculous. I never dove deep into it but those PER 100 Poss and PER 36 are insane. One of the fastest climbing All Time players I have ever seen.
@@d3adyoutubeaccount_estúpido_ . the numbers are cross era because that's how relativity works. _Relative to his peers_ , Jokic is as good offensively as anyone ever has been.
He is the BEST ALLROUND TEAM PLAYER EVER!-) btw, i was a bit suprised how good produced your video is and thank you very much for your explanation about the TS% 4:46 Keep up the good work, im following you from now :) Cheers!
Honestly, I'm not mad at it. If he wins back to back, I'll agree. He can literally do it all, and I'm starting to think he's been the best in the world for a long time. we just didn't know cause his team had been hurt.
And the weird media campaign to suppress, smear, and discredit him the last year or two has been verrrrry effective as well. Such a shame but I’m glad last year’s final run opened more people’s eyes to his brilliance and beautiful game
For all you advanced stats nerds out there: Jokic has led the league 4 times in offensive box plus/minus. The only other players to do it more times than him: Jordan, LeBron, and Kareem.
@@jacobwilson7301idk, I just feel like Jokic benefits from playing in the era of small ball and positionless basketball. Just look at the big men he has to go against vs the ones from the 90s and 2000s. Not saying he wouldn’t be a great player in any era, of course he would, but to me personally I can’t put him on the same level of MJ or Lebron yet because I think much of his insane stats have to do with the era he’s playing in.
Just a thought here, but as a Lakers fan, I gotta try and find an answer to how to stop Jokic. Running the math on his game, I found keeping him on the perimeter and only giving him looks from 3 might be the key. With his overall efficiency numbers, he actually scores fewer points if all his shots are 3s, despite his percentage being very respectable from that range. Additionally, it will be more difficult for him to generate offensive rebounds and mismatches for team mates from there. With that said, I've long agreed with all the points you've made in this video and is truly one of the most impressive offensive players I've ever seen. His assist number going up, I feel, is a result of him getting a higher quality team around him over time, with Denver having been downright genius with their long-term roster building, resulting in more of his passes translating to made baskets.
Sure! That’s a smart strategy but: 1) who do yall have that can keep him from going wherever he wants to physically? 2) who do you have that can outsmart *and* outplay him to execute that? LBJ is smart enough but not big or durable enough to pound with Joker for 4 quarters, let alone 4-7 games 3) Joker would happily generate more offense for his boys than shoot anyway, which led to the whole “make Joker a shooter” strategy when he put up ~50 against the Suns last playoffs I’m not saying they are unbeatable and certainly any strategy might work for a game, maybe even two but it remains to be seen who has the strategy and the personnel to outduel Jok and squad since last postseason but we’ll see! I hope both of our teams stay heathy and have a great series! 🤝
And Joker’s been battling a shooting hand wrist injury since last season and back pain, but still performing like this and taking hardly any time off. Imagine if he was healthy and/or if he got a decent whistle 🤯
@@resurrectedpanah, hes playing another max, no way hes turning down 400 mili over 5, in serbia with that kind of money hes hole family tree is set 4 ever Hes got alot now, but another max will essentially double his carrer earnings, and he ll be 38, thats still very young in life
@@resurrectedpa the NBA won't let that happen even if jokic wants to. He is still young and can stay dominant for many years and fans started going around joker and denver, the NBA as a business won't let that opportunities go.
Only player ever to total 2000/1000/500 in a season.. and he did it on 58% shooting. He was 20ish rebounds away from doing it again this year except it would have been 2000/1000/700
I remember when he was about to win his first MVP, and me and a friend were talking about who was the best player and we spent over an hour trying to narrow it down and we were both kinda shocked we both ended up choosing Joker, and he’s just become even more polished since.
Been watching the league since the mid 80’s and I have to say joker is my third favorite center of all time only behind David Robinson and dream, Joker is by far my favorite player in the era for sure though.
great vid and analysis. speaking beyond simple/advanced statistics and splits, joker provides something special to any team he is playing for (Denver or Serbia). his personal traits (mainly modesty), high iq, unselfishness, carelessness on the board, leadership, etc... he makes whole squad much better, more focused, driven to win. Joker once will be one hell of a coach. i enjoyed watching NBA in 90s as most of fans, then stopped following it for over 20 years and now enjoying NBA once again thanks to Europeans - Joker, Luka, Yannis, Wemby, etc. Real thrill to watch it.
I always wanted to see someone who played center the way Magic did when he was subbed in for Kareem. Jokic does it. They might be beat for volume, but they are the two most magical passers in the history of the NBA.
Great video . Sound analysis. That joker dude is really unfathomable. The touches and average time comparison is insane. It’s been ages since I have seen this level of puppet mastery over such a long time span without anyone really having figured out an antidote
I discovered your channel(s) a little over a month ago and I have to say, you surprise me and get me excited with every video you post. The amount of research and effort you put into them is staggering. Thank you for allowing your love of the game to fully bleed into your content. I appreciate the fact that you call out the idiotic takes and xenophobia, all while bringing attention to the finer things that most people don’t notice or realize. Your content is nothing short of amazing. Again, thanks man!
Great video! A point that you passed through quickly deserves more attention… the fact that Jokic has such a high TS% is impressive, but his offensive rebounding and put backs make it even more insane. Many games Jokic will be something like 13-18 from the floor but of those 5 five missed shots, the dude had 3 put backs. Which is to say, if put backs were factored into TS% his numbers would dwarf everyone else
Nice video. I wish ESPN would do analysis like this on the best players in the NBA. Wouldn't it be great in the last weeks of the NBA they did an in depth analysis of the top 5 mvp candidates?
Great breakdown! I really appreciate that you go deep on the analytics and used relative true shooting to compare between eras. Also looking at where Jokic’s scoring clips compare to the league averages. One thing I hope you consider for the future though. I think you may be confusing percentages and percentage points. So when Jokic is shooting, for example, 72% at the rim when the league average is 65%, he’s shooting 7 percentage points better than the league average not 7%. 7% better would be about 69.5% where as Jokic is shooting closer to 10% better. It’s minor I know, but just a quirk of percentages.
Testify!!! Preach my brother! Spread the truth to the masses. It's hard to accept at first, especially for us "old heads" but I've been watching Denver religiously throughout his career and he's more than different. Way beyond just being a problem. Terms like "unguardable, & cheat code" get used extremely often. I've heard multiple: He's the most intelligent player ever. He sees the court like Gretzky saw the ice. The complete awareness is historically unmatched. & Never have so few calls gone to someone who gets hacked on like golf balls at the Driving Range. I'll save the rest for the book. 🤔😉 ⛏️🏀🏆✌️...& Literally egoless.😵💫🤯🙀😲
Great job. Lots of years watching Basketball has brought me to the same conclusion.Dave Bing was my first Bb hero. Been watching critically since then. He is the most total pkg I’ve ever seen and that’s not considering his ability to raise his teammates abilities. Hes simply the best I’ve seen.
Considering that Jokic is the first ofensive option, can do everything offensively and also can pass on the levels of Magic and LeBron he probably is up there in general offense, he is no lower than the 3rd spot.
Its also why baseball is at an all time low in popularity. But hey as long you have a made up statistic like War. I guess thats all that matters. Nothing personal I just hate what baseball has turned into.
@@lespaul1968 Viewership has been up the last 3 years and Jokic brought fans back to the league. Also globally the NBA is more popular than ever. It's clearly on the incline
No, and the reason is simple. This era is easy to dominate. Jokic isn't the only one posting ridiculous stats. The NBA is averaging the most points since the 1960's. Luka is putting up roughly a 35 point triple double. LeBron at 40 is posting the same type of stats he did at 25. 60 and 70 bombs dropped with regularity. Triple doubles are nothing. Nothing against today's players. I'm one of the rare people who (smartly) believes all era's are roughly the same, talent wise. The difference is 100% the rules. I'd love to bring Larry Bird, Michael Jordan, Hakeem Olajuwon and Shaq to this era and see what they do. In short, Jokic is great and would be great in any era. That said, I think in the 90's, he's just be a 20-12-4 guy. Not a 26-12-9 guy. First off, they didn't let bigs orchestrate offenses like that. The most they'd let bigs do is kick it in to big fella, and if he gets doubled, pass to an open shooter. Secondly, there were more actual BIGS back then, and they could camp the paint. Thirdly, the game was more physical. Stuff that gets called a foul now wasn't called then. Ticky tack stuff. Give someone like Bird the freedom of movement (traveling, let's be real) that they have now. Give him the spacing. Let him orchestrate the offense (he was a brilliant passer) and Bird would average 35-12-10. Easy.
Man we done with the 2020s! Jokic was a literal farmer who just wanted to go home to his horses and only good because he played against a bunch of podcasters and sneaker heads, in a league with only 30 teams and maybe 5 good big men between them he got no comp
Me personally wilt during his days when he became a playmaker was the greatest offensive player to ever touch a basketball court (Not skill related but production) (Note assists weren’t tracked as freely in the 60s as the person you pass takes a single dribble you no longer get an assist) He was still a scoring beast and could now effectively beat double teams Basically getting rid of his biggest weakness of forced shots And he could still go off for 60 any time while also being able to drop 20 assists at the same time. And while he might not been as efficient as Jokic but truthfully I think we can all admit getting double and triple teamed every Time you touch the ball as wilt was does make scoring as effiecently as Jokic hard as well there wasn’t a 3 point line in the 60s so far less spacing allowed defense to double or triple team a lot without much of a disadvantage. And ofc lastly he averaged like some nonsense 10+offense rebounds per game that’s just unholy And if we go by one’s career I’d take wilt over anyone He showed he can drop 50 as easy as he can breathe Drop 10-20 assist like it’s a walk in the park Grab 20 offensive rebounds like it’s just another day at the office
Would love a video on the Knicks. It isn’t talked about enough how they went from the worst team in the league, to the 2 seed in 4 yrs. Just incredible love after incredible love.
Legendary efficiency in scoring, amon the all-time best in passing (especially when including the time of posession), a dominant rebounder. What a combo. If he was a dominant shot blocker, he'd be going for the GOAT at this point
I'm inclined to lean toward Jokic, but we can't pretend that "those 4-5 points that separate him from other all-time greats" would only be used in an argument for him. That 4-5 ppg pt diff is actually over 1000 cumulative points over the course of 4 season stretches. If the assist argument works for him, then the point differential has to greatly work against him too.
A big difference between Jokic and Magic/Stockton/Kidd/Paul when it comes to his ast numbers. His level of responsibility is double or triple to that of his predecessors. He has to be the number scoring option giving you 25-35 a night, the best rebounder, run the entire teams offense and facilitate. None of those other guys averaging 10+ ast a game had to do half of that. They were able to sit back most of the time, facilitate and run the offense and score when they had to. We've never seen someone have that level of responsibility other then MAYBE 2018 Lebron
@@AHMAD-2324people love to say that in the postseason then laugh at him during the All-Star voting. If Jamal is seen as so valuable, then who’s hyping him up for All NBA? Would he even be thought about for the Olympic team if he was from the U.S. ? Cope all you want to but the post is all facts until yall stay consistent. People don’t even believe Joker is MVP worthy for two seasons straight but yall wanna claim Jamal is a honorary All Star… fooh
@@AHMAD-2324 Not really, Jemal Murry averages around 20 points a game, that puts him in top 40, he needs to be in top 24 to be an all star. He is close but not there yet. He can't be placed to be an all-star based on playoffs performances. And you can't say that Jokic plays with an all-star during the season, when Murry stats can't back it up.
I love how many people are immediately triggered from the title and melting down in the comments, obviously without watching Joker OR even this video 😂😂😂
This kinda seems like a stretch ngl I feel like there are many players that would be putting up similar or better numbers my favorite to put as the most skilled would be Hakeem, I just feel like jokic is brought up in an era design for offensive success. The spacing, players being better, more freedom allowed him to do these things, i feel if Hakeem got drafted in 2014 his offense would have skyrocketed plus his defensive skill
The time handling the ball, being one-half of other greats or any average, is the greatest stat. Think about that, the results he gets and the great numbers are being accomplished with having the ball one-half of the time. That's mind-blowing; nobody comes close to him at any time. Johik is changing the game; he is rewriting how it is played. He spends half the time touching the ball to get ultra-higher numbers. 😮
