Just before that one person says it… NO I don’t literally mean … no one is buying Avon.. it’s a figure of speech… like “no one wears skinny jeans anymore” doesn’t mean literally no one wears skinny jeans… 👍🏼

Perfect example but it actually annoys me a little that this has to be explained... Why don't people understand the concept of hyperbole using absolute statements when most of us use it all the time? (I literally just did.... and it wasn't intentional... 😭)

I am a 68 year old black woman who remembers my mother and her friends buying Avon products when I was a child. In those days the United States was still segregated and black people were often not treated well at makeup counters in stores. Avon had advertisements in black magazines so a lot of black women sold Avon. Avon was one of the first makeup brands that used black models in their advertisements. My mom and her friends loved the fragrances because they came in beautiful containers. Avon was considered a company that catered to the black consumer at a time when few companies wanted our business. Once the United States became integrated and other makeup brands started courting the black consumer, Avon began to not be as popular. I still like Skin So Soft products but I rarely purchase other Avon products. My mom and the generation that purchased Avon products are now all dead. I know few people my age who use Avon products.

That was a fascinating piece of history. Thanks for sharing. I had no idea but of course it makes sense. We grew up in a non English speaking community and purchasing Avon from each other was far more pleasant than trying to go to the local department stores and deal with the attitudes there. Yes now that you mention it I remember that too

Iirc a huge part of the success of the Sears catalogue was also due to Black people being able to shop from it without the harassment they experienced in stores.

She always bought us stuff from the catalog and she has quite a few completed collections. She just passed away on Christmas Eve and her avon pension supported up until death. Edited to add I miss their giant sign off the 210.

I buy AVON products online. They're good for the price, the basic stuff like bath products are actually some of my favourites and I do choose them when I can. I would buy them more if they were available in shops. But I don't dip into their "higher-end" stuff. They do nice scents and they're just a decent brand overall imo.

An Avon lady saved my life once! We lived in Winnipeg when I was little and my way home from school included crossing a big empty field. That year we’d had about a metre of snow and it had a thick crust so I could just walk across the top. But within a stone’s throw of the plowed sidewalk I fell through and was trapped. For half an hour no one passed and I thought I would die. An Avon lady walking her rounds heard me calling for help and rescued me and my Mom became her best customer after that.

As a former Avon lady, one of the other reasons the company isn’t doing well is the near constant changing of its CEOs. In less than 10 years it’s had 3-4 new CEO’s take over then leave. When it really went downhill is when the CEO of LG (yes the appliance one) took over and began offering an odd range of ‘new’ products, including brands you could find in Ulta & Sephora. I could go on and on about my experiences, and fond memories growing up with it since my mom (adopted by my grandparents for context) sold it through my childhood.

I've been selling Avon for 38 years and I totally agree with you. I've often had to agree with people saying Avon thinks it's 'Amway' now & the fact that our products can be found in stores, it's just not the same. And another thing, they bring new products out and they're discontinued by the time a customer has tried it and decided they like it. The quality of their costume jewelry has gone way down and their guarantee for Avon items is practically non-existent now. My Mom sold for years and there are items I still love in Avon, so I''m still selling for a while longer. Just hope Avon can figure out how to correct their problems before it's too late.

Great video! New to your channel - I really appreciated the respectful way you reviewed Avon - I am an Avon Rep (a very nonpushy shy one at that!) and have been selling for 18 years and I truly love it - even with all the growing pains we have been experiencing. I have seen this company be amazing and I have seen this company make mistake after mistake. This past year has been rough - inventory has been low because of manufacturing issues - I feel like every time we get bought by a new company/management company they don't understand Avon's amazing history and change things instead of letting its history and tradition guide it. I remain a rep because I love their products, I enjoy helping my customers, and it's nostalgic for me I have memories of skin so soft growing up in Michigan we used it to keep the mosquitoes away when we were up at the lake. I remember my grandmother's perfumes and bubble bath.

I feel like Avon was the gold standard of MLM. It didn't "feel" shady. Their products are actually very good quality. They need to drop most of the newer MLM type things they're doing, drop these new, weird little "modern" brands, get their Avon ppl pushing pavement again (or on social media) and BRING BACK THE GOOD PRODUCTS. Avon has had some ICONIC skincare, bath products, fragrances and makeup. Not to mention the costume jewelry and little gifts. They had great stuff. They need to go back to their roots. I would buy from them if they did ❤

I’m a bit older (50’s) and remember Avon was a thing we looked forward too. Even though the 80’s and beyond seemed so progressive, there was a portion of society that purchasing makeup was kind of frowned upon. I was raised that the only thing allowed was a bit of lipstick on a holiday. The fight I had to wear eyeliner and mascara, huge. So we didn’t really go to stores. Even as an adult when I’m around other folks my age they act like makeup is a bad thing. So Avon was this magical thing where a lovely human would come to your home, you could purchase stuff discreetly, no judgement. It Sisto catered to various taste levels. It felt empowering. Ironically, MaryKay had a different effect. I think it was probably how they sold their products. So, Avon has this warm lovely place in my heart and really doesn’t apply much to today. I never sold it, nor was pushed to sell it. Thank you for taking me down memory lane

My grandma started selling Avon very early on. It was in a small town/rural area and she didn't have a car, but that didn't stop her. She walked everywhere that she thought she could make a sale, and she could apparently sell to just about anybody. Farm women who only left the house to go to church on Sunday would end up buying a lipstick or some perfume. Once she could afford a car, there was really no stopping her. She expanded her range to most of the county, and her car trunk was always full of products so a lot of time you didn't have to wait for your order to come in. She would make rounds of the schools and factories and anywhere there were a bunch of women. All our christmas gifts were either Avon products or gifts that she had received from the company for selling so much. She worked for Avon well into her 80s. When she had to get a couple younger women to take over the running for her, she knew it was finally time to retire. She was quite a character. Not a very loving grandmother, to be honest, but a character nonetheless.

I am an Avon rep and I don't think of Avon as an MLM. I have never had to recruit anyone to make money. I just sell directly to consumers. When you buy from an Avon representative, you are supporting them directly. Please feel good knowing that Avon is one of the only companies where a woman can be in charge and in control of her own finances. For some women who may have been in abusive relationships, have little or no education, or perhaps have a criminal background, Avon is a way to start earning money right off the bat with zero investment. It is free to become a representative, they do not charge for you to have an online store, and if need be, they will send you a visa card where they send your commisions. So many woman have Avon to thank for providing them a way to earn money of their own and giving them the opportunity to meet others. I know MLM's have a bad reputation but believe me when I tell you that Avon is not one of those MLM's. There is no inventory to carry, no monthly fee, no minimum monthly purchases, and no recruiting required. When my twins were born premature and my corporate job did not allow me time off or even pay my wages, it was my Avon checks and my Avon sisterhood that helped keep the lights on. There are countless stories of how Avon has helped women just like me so please don't feel bad about your hand cream purchase because when you shop with a rep, they will get between 20-50% of what you pay. Wouldn't you rather a rep you actually see in person or at least lives in your area earn the money rather than a big faceless corporation? When you shop with a rep, you have direct control over who your dollars are supporting! Thank you for buying from a rep.

My grandmother was an Avon rep for over 30 years. I have very fond memories of helping her put the “outlet” pamphlet book inside the new books every month (you hold the book flat in your palm and it opens to exactly the middle where the staples hold it altogether EVERY TIME lol). Loved when she’d get deliveries when I was at her house. She’d always save me the mini lipstick samples (still the cutest things I’ve ever seen in my life!). Also, she was a hoarder so she never returned anything. If her customer wanted to return something, it just went straight in her basement. When I was a teenager, my friends and I would go over there when she wasn’t home and “shop” her basement. I still have an “amethyst” ring that’s worthless but I would save from a fire. My mom always used Odyssey perfume from Avon (we got a great discount haha) and that’s a comfort scent for me. I have a bottle I use just to spritz my pillows or room with if I’m having a bad day. Love Avon!

Every person I know that sold/sells Avon genuinely likes the products and they don’t complain about mistreatment or being in debt. I’m from Brazil, but Avon has been big here for decades. Every lady at my mother’s office would buy and use Avon: lipsticks, fragrances, body lotions… a few like five years ago it was still pretty solid, you could buy it everywhere. Last year, Avon division in Brazil was bought and basically swallowed by a Brazilian giant called Natura. Natura worked pretty similar to Avon l, through the ladies with booklets. However, Natura is discontinuing several Avon products (and people here HATE it! They discontinued their cream deodorants, a crushing success) and pointing towards a change in direct sales, opening physical stores, boosting app and site sales, making it more difficult for the booklet lady to keep working.
@Saphthings

@@Saphthings it’s funny because we easily take for granted how big of a business is Natura, a beauty giant. For the salespeople who used to rely on catalog sales this is s heavy blow, but Natura is clearly cutting the bestselling Avon products and trying to take hold of the sales instead of relying on sellers. Let’s see what the future brings!
@brunasilvacordeiro4106
@brunasilvacordeiro4106 6 месяцев назад
And here I thought global Avon belonged to NaturaCo, silly me I came to say this. In Brazil, everyone’s first makeup came from Avon (at least from by generation and before), so it’s been huge since ever. Surely, overtime as the Brazilian beauty market evolved, Avon lost a bit of its iconic status, but it’s always been here, now with influencers making their products viral. So it’s really weird to watch a video about a downfall. I believe Avon will always be a thing because it provides quality products with great prices for the overall community
@JLZ109
@JLZ109 5 месяцев назад
I didn't know Natura bought them! The booklet lady is dying out, but at least for Natura I know you can still have your representative's code added to your online orders so they can get their commission. But honestly it's probably for the better - Natura and Oboticario aren't considered "true" mlms here because their profits do come from sales and not the recruitment of sellers. I believe letting these kinds of representatives die out is an attempt to distance themselves further from that kind of business model and avoid litigation - you know, what with the whole mess with Herbalife and Hinode and Tupperware. I believe Avon still makes an actual profit from direct sales here in Brazil, but I do think they had been shifting their focus towards recruitment for a while - much like Tupperware, another giant with actually good products back in the day that became more and more predatory over the years and is now (finally, blessedly) dying. And honestly, even for Natura and Oboticario, in the end their direct sale representatives barely make any money - I'd much rather have a seller at a store who I know is getting paid actual wages than someone sinking into debt to try and meet the sales quotas of their supposed side gig, as I've seen happen to people in my family.

(My village is predominantly older ladies and they love a catalogue and the delivery service because they don’t do online shopping). Then my upline got pushy to get me to recruit more people and flood my social media and social circle with marketing. It was exhausting and I basically gave up as I also had no time to do it anymore (I’d developed a larger customer base than I could handle and family life was getting more demanding) so I am now what’s known as a “personal shopper” where I buy as a rep and get discount on products but I don’t have to sell to anyone. No irritation, just nice, soft skin. I also used to get the hand cream; it was so nice! I remember buying these products at a booth at a local farmers' market. Haven't seen any Avon products anywhere in quite some time, so I found other brands to go to. I also remember my mom's collection of Avon fragrances, and the funky colognes and aftershaves she bought for my dad, mostly so she could collect the figural containers. Those bottles actually sold pretty well when we held the estate sale after she died. Thanks for bringing back those memories for me. Happy Christmas!

As Donna described it, that would pump out and mix together then? If so it's still available. 🙂

My mother sold AVON when I was a kid in the 80s. It was one of the nicer side jobs that a Black woman in working in a corporation could do. She worked as a sales liaison for her day job and most of her customers were co workers who just didn't have time to go out and do makeup shopping themselves. She said she made most of her sales during their lunch hour and her supervisor was 100% chill with it because he'd buy some things for himself and his wife. I do miss the joy of getting the little dolls, the sample lipsticks and perfumes while helping mum pack orders for her co-workers. Or laying on the floor with my siblings and perusing the catalogs to pick things we might like. Skin so Soft saved me from those tenacious Georgia mosquitos. There was a brick and mortar store close to where I currently live and I popped in to buy one of my favorite perfumes (Haiku).

Great video! Once upon a time, Avon was a great company. It gave women an opportunity to make money without disrupting their household management, the products were great quality, and the perfume/cologne bottles were works of art. The problem with Avon is they didn’t keep up with the times. Women were able to enter into the workforce in virtually any job they wanted, they got into e-commerce too late, and the Internet widened people’s options for beauty products that they never had access to before (ex: K-beauty products and Middle Eastern fragrances). It also didn’t help that they started skimping on product quality.

I was originally so confused when you said Avon was an MLM because I didn't remember it being structured like that when I knew people who sold it. Makes sense now that I know they adopted that model later.

The lip balms, Skin So Soft, the little lipstick samples, the deodorant roll-ons (I felt so cool and bougie taking those to gym class), the perfumes! I was born in the early 80’s, and Avon was so exciting during the 80’s & 90’s. Where I lived in the rural Midwest, USA, it was seen as so bougie, compared to drugstore brands. In those days, the structure was like: drugstore, then Avon, then prestige brands like Elizabeth Arden and Clinique. We couldn’t afford prestige, so Avon was our standard for fancy. 😂 Whenever one of my mom’s friends would bring over a catalogue, I’d go over the whole thing a million times, for weeks. My child and early teen self would pretend that I’d get this or that, and imagined how cool and beautiful I would be if I used those products. This was in the days before our family had Internet service out where we lived, or even had on-demand cable television or even a VHS player. The Avon, Sears, and JC Penney catalogues were the pinnacle of bougie dreaming for a poverty-stricken lass from a farming community.

I remember my mom having a slew of the tiny white sample tubes of lipstick in the 60s. I loved looking through the new samples.

Excellent video I always love your historical content. I think it's an interesting note that in the US women were traditionally in the home (middle class/upper class) until WWII when they were required to work in the factories. When the war was over and the men came home, they wanted their jobs and head of household status back. Women had been running the home, supplementing their mens pay with their own and were in charge of how and where it was spent. So when they men came home and women were expected to go back to homemaking it was something a lot of women didn't want but didn't have a way to push back. Avon gave them that opportunity; to make their own money again and money in the US always means freedom. I'm disappointed they turned into an MLM because I think they did a lot of good for women back in the day.

Thank you for a great exposé! I've been waiting for this one.👻🖤 My grandmother and mother bought lots of Avon perfumes and colognes. They collected the iconic bottles and I still have lots of them. I see Avon sellers at flea markets which I think they're not supposed to do but I ain't no snitch. 🤐

Lol! They're not. I use to sell Mary Kay, and same thing. Not supposed to sell at fairs, etc. But I wanted to meet new people and make money. Only did it once. I still get some Avon perfumes and lipsticks through a friend of my mom's. :)

I've only just discovered you but I really like your work! Not only are you good at this, just the right amount of sass- but you're not condescending. And I love that you present these subjects with dignity. I'm watching them all now!!! Thank you for your good work!!!

Avon was amazing when I was younger, I'm 40 now, but the thing I remember the most was their Skin So Soft line in the pink bottle. I was obsessed with that. It smelled so good!

I was an Avon lady! I bought so many products that I was always out of pocket! I still have a single black eyeshadow that I still use. The best black ever! What comes to mind? Bubble baths. I still use them if I want loads of bubbles and I can sling half a bottle in without worrying about the cost (something that's not possible when I'm using my l'Occitane). The Lily one makes the entire house smell fab.
