I am dying to know the pink/purple metallic shadow you're wearing. Even just a few guesses, or what you know of that's similar, any info would be much appreciated. Just the main color on your upper lids, if you can. I could see this being really versatile. Regardless, thanks for talking about the mary kay mlm. I've seen the older versions of the pink cars and truly, it's like pepto-bismal in person.

So, my mom actually started selling Mary Kay after she left her executive position. My mom is a very intelligent woman. I think what stood out to her was that Mary Kay was a Christian company and the person that got her into it with someone she trusted. She also loved the fact that it was a female founded brand. But yes, she got a Mary Kay credit card and was convinced she had to buy all the inventory. She still has a s*** ton of inventory she has not sold. I will never not support her, but I'm sad that she fell into it

I’m old enough to have been invited so many “parties” just to find out when I got there that it was an MLM sales pitch: Amway, Herbalife, Mary Kay, Melaluca, Pampered Chef, Candle parties, etc. The most insulting part of those experiences was how the company convinced people I knew to monetize their friendships. Whenever that happened to me, I’d do everything I could to extricate myself from those “friendships.”

@jena.alexia

That's the worst part. They destroy friendships. If ever you suddenly are contacted out of the blue by an old friend or acquaintance chances are they're trying to flog something like this. I also was invited to afternoon teas, girls afternoon with cocktails, and other faux social gatherings that suddenly turned into a sales pitch: essential oils, Intimo lingerie, Nutrimetics, Tupperware, scrapbooking, cookware, Omegatrend... I felt guilty if I didn't buy anything so usually just bought the cheapest thing. And then there's that awful pressure and guilt trip at the end for the consultant to book another 3 parties otherwise the host doesn't get her "free gift". I just don't go to those things anymore. It's a nightmare.

I got sucked into Mary Kay when I was about 20. I was dying to be a makeup artist and thought it would be a great way to become one while making money on sales too. No surprise, once my friends and family bought all they were willing to I ran out of customers and I was nowhere closer to my goal of becoming a pro artist. All the new “friends” I made pretty much abandoned me as I pulled away from Mary Kay. Fast forward 5 years and I eventually DID become a makeup artist and have been doing it now for 7 years. And I just stay far away from MLM’s now.

I was recruited when I was 19. I was really nervous to spend all the money upfront to buy my "stock," but my upline said they'd buy back anything I couldn't sell so that way I was guaranteed not to lose money. After trying for nearly a year and selling three things, I said I was done and asked upline to make good on her promise to buy things back. She refused because the company was in the middle of changing all their packaging so everything I had wouldn't be sellable. I learned later that the company does this regularly so that consultants who are "garage qualified" like I was have to buy a whole new stock. It took me more than a decade and thousands and thousands of dollars to dig myself out of the hole Mary Kay left me in. I was 19 and got talked into something that ruined my 20s and still has significant effects on me two decades later.

Wait, Robert I'm screaming because that's me as one of the dancers at the Mary Kay Conventions!!! At 5:34 that's me on the right on the scaffolding under the word TEAM holding my beautiful flag 💀I did two summer gigs in Dallas with the production company they used to work with. It was honestly a really nice gig dance-wise- decent pay, not too crazy hours, they fed us on convention days, lots of down time, and I did it with a bunch of my friends from university. Hilarious that I did that gig considering how anti-MLM I am now. Once we got thru all the rehearsals and staging portion, they gave us a shit ton of skincare and makeup with different looks for each costume etc. and it was all HORRIBLE lolol I was like I though they were a makeup company?? I didn't put any of the skincare on my face, I ended up using my own foundation since the color match for my pale skin was so bad (it was all dark orange on me), and the eyeshadow and blush had NO payoff at all. Like it was a major struggle to make those eye looks work and actually look different from each other. Alsooo all the music had lyric changes that added in Mary Kay references and we had to learn the new lyrics and lip sync them while we danced lol. I RODE onto the stage on a PICKUP TRUCK in one dance and was a butterfly up in a harness in another like!! Those ladies were obsessed with us any time they ran into any of the cast. It all feels like a bit of a fever dream but I have the leftover Mary Kay products to remind me it was real.

Robert, I love how you aren't afraid of saying "i don't know/I don't understand". I work at a university, where everyone thinks they're very smart... I mean, they probably are by some standards, but the amount of ego is insane. You'll never hear someone say they don't know something so openly and I'm also guilty of it. This just kind of hit me in the head. I guess there's this pressure of always knowing everything and if you don't then you have to either pretend you do or try to avoid the conversation. It was so refreshing to see you say "I just don't get what it means." and keep going, like that information isn't that important to you, which in reality it isn't. Love all the content you've been giving us recently. 🖤🖤🖤

It’s so healthy and important to be comfortable saying “I don’t know”. I have so much respect for people who are willing to say they don’t have the answer(s), rather than make something up or avoid the question. I’ve been humiliated by so many doctors who refused to just say “unfortunately I don’t know what is the cause of what you’re going through, but I’ll do some testing/look into it/refer you to someone who might/i believe you/literally anything”. The amount of times doctors have said “it’s just anxiety” or seemed irritated that I came to see them because they were unsure 😩 meanwhile, I had a whole entire brain tumor.

Then nobody else in town could sell anything, cuz im from Juneau, Alaska, where there's no roads in/out, so we are very secluded. Then my mom did a jewelry MLM. I'm so glad she didn't get roped into more, she was so miserable during that time. It was after my parents divorce so she was on her own and she struggled so much. It was so hard to listen to her cry after every party she threw, because she was just giving away things and people weren't buying enough. It made me HATE MLM companies. I used their make up so the only stock I kept was my own personal stock that was for me, but that’s not really stock that’s just like having make up backups and Skincare backups. My parents were in several MLMs and even used my identity to sign up for spots when I was under 18. They were even featured in a magazine (a photoshoot I was intentionally absent for!) and even have weird pics with Dr. Oz from events. Spent many silent dinners with a MLM call on speaker phone for us all to hear even when I was an adult. MLMs ruin families, relationships and lives. I'm chronically ill and disabled - the amount of products I've been pitched that would cure my incurable illnesses is wild... from family, friends and strangers. All the while my parents couldn't afford the mortgage and my mother had to go back to work after 15+ years at home (not even raising me - she wasn't maternal - I raised myself) while they had an actual business to run. They could have put time, money and energy into their real business but it all went into the idea of success and MLM events and parties while they were financially struggling and close to losing their home. I have many MLM horror stories and got sucked into them as well but got out when I was 17. MLMs are horrible.

I'm not selling anything. Just wondering if you have ever been referred to an allergist doctor, by your family Doctor. Allergic reactions can create havic on a person's body. If you do get tested, read up on your allergin, learn it's names/ biproduct names. Avoid buying products with those allergins in the ingredient list. 2nd. Ask for a blood test to be done, to see what vitamins your body is low on. Take tjose specific vitamins daily. This will help with hair loss, depression, anxiety, aches & pains, Bloating, Energy levels, and much more. I hope you find what is ailing you. 💕

When I graduated from college in 1985, I started wearing Mary Kay makeup. I absolutely LOVED it. My skin loved the products, and I could work all day, and my makeup looked exactly like it did when I applied it. One of my friends was selling it, and she got the car etc. But, when Mary Kay died, the quality of the makeup dropped dramatically as far as I was concerned.... so I stopped using any of their products. I think the makeup is similar to Elf's, but so much more expensive!!

@Patti-1962, I sold MK in the mid 80’s. I actually made a nice bit of money. My director fell very ill at one conference, she overheard a very high level man (If I remember correctly he was a relative of hers) say is that ‘Jane Doe’ person really as sick as she says she is? She was deeply hurt and I was very offended for her and angry. I got home and sent back all of my inventory and never looked back. I DO agree once MK passed the quality began to suffer, as my friends that stayed would tell me. But now that I’m older I certainly realize the MLM structure and how its sole purpose is to make the upper echelons richer.

They were also super conservative and religious at our sales meetings. They opened every sales person meeting with Prayer and tried to insist I participate, even as a different religion. All sales ladies were expected to dress a certain way, mostly just in black, and no pants, skirts or dresses only, depending on your rank you could wear certain colors or prints. You had to wear heels. And they wanted us to only wear pearls or gold jewelry. And they said they “had” to be real gold or pearls because we couldn’t be going around to clients looking cheap. With an MLM’s their distributors/consultants are the brands target market! That’s what makes MLM’s so awful.

I also have some nostalgia with Mary Kay. My mom didn't sell it, but she purchased the big suitcase size sales kit. It came with all shades & colors for full face make-up & a VHS on how to apply. She gifted it to me & I not only had the best make-up collection in the 90's but also was probably the only one who knew how to properly apply it.

I am glad that you made this video and mentioned a study from Harvard. I was reached out by somebody who I used to know trying to invite me for a pampered chef party and I told him that I don’t support MLM‘s recently. Definitely wanna share this video. Also, Mary Kay make up is what got me to no longer support. MLM‘s, since I know what’s better at the drugstore and prestige make up.

My mom wanted me to sell Mary Kay... The upline people will steal sales from their downline. There os no sale where the consultat isn't recruiting. The starter kit is $150.00 and not useful. You used the phrase "comercial cult" is very accurate.

My diet is actually an MLM, however, it really works. I've lost 125 lbs. and am at my goal weight. I had one coach who used to try to recruit me so I got a different coach.

Somehow my gullible, socially awkward sister was convinced by two women at a wedding convention to join Mary Kay. She was incredibly uncomfortable with going door-to-door or cold calling people, and didn't have a huge number of friends to pawn the makeup off on. My mom and I bought some things, but in the end, she lost out on hundreds of dollars. This was before Sephora existed in our city, but we still had better drugstore options at Walmart or Shoppers Drug Mart (I'm in Canada). It was a huge waste of her money and a punch to her self-esteem.

There’s a Mary Kay lady in our towns chamber of commerce. 🙄 Years ago when I first moved in with my ex, who was also in the chamber, he had mentioned to me the MK lady really pushing for her son to move in with us. Thankfully, we already had another person planned and I was able to convince him to turn them down. About three months after we all moved in together we heard news that her son had been abusing (I can’t remember if it was meth or heroin) and ended up slaughtering his girlfriend with a katana in their home. This was during lockdown so if we had them move in I 100% would have been home alone when it happened. He ended up confessing to his dad later that day and was arrested, then- if I remember correctly, in an attempt to lure the guards- had somehow set off an alarm and consequently he ended up dying in an altercation with officers. I can’t be certain if she even took a short step away for a couple weeks, but can definitely remember being told she was acting as if absolutely nothing had happened and never said anything about it to anyone so no one even asked. She’s one of the car ladies so I assume the death of her homicidal son would have affected her down line too much to give a second thought to.

$5k in 1963 is equivalent to almost $50k in 2024. Her "struggling" single mom story is a myth.

Mary Kay smh… I used to get free foundation and face care from my aunt who sold Mary Kay and I always thought the whole idea was pretty weird. The quality of products was pretty poor, especially for the price and my foundation was always off.😂😂 I learned so much from this video, Robert, as usual! Keep them coming!

oh man, my aunt has been a mary kay consultant for DECADES. she goes to the big conference in dallas, texas every year. her house is filled with thousands upon thousands of dollars of unsold products because she only has like five people that actively buy from her. oh, and I always get mary kay products that I do not want or need from her every christmas because she just refuses to just me gift cards or cash . 🥴
