I sound like a hater but skill-wise, we have kids in my local lineup that are better technical surfers than Kemper and the Rothmans. Also, their dad was pushing bricks of Yay all thru Hawaii. What about that year they didn't allowed Bruce to compete in the event with his brother's name? That was one of the most ridiculous shit i've seen. It was like saying Uncle Clyde he can't surf the Eddie Aikau.

@@fernandomaron87 Exactly. The pre 2014 format was my favorite to watch. It was different than the rest of the tour (and honestly, I feel that the tour should go to that format instead of what it runs) These contests are held across the world and the locals should have a solid representation in that contest.

Exactly. Even if it has the name “Pipe Masters” that’s not what it is. This is a special invite Stab Mag thing. The WSL Pipe contest is the closest thing to the OG Pipe Masters, but it’s missing that magic component of a local wildcard being able to make it thru and win it all. Koa being upset seems like he’s venting at Stab because they changed the format when it’s the WSL who changed everything by making Pipe first event of the season. If I’m Koa, I’d be grateful for being invited to a Stab event. Stab puts on sick events. Only other media is RU-vid vloggers

@@zach1978 WSL is still one of the top sponsors of the event, look at the event site. Regardless of the head sponsor, it doesn't change what happened. Agreed that you don't need a sponsored contest to know who the best is. But would you rather see a bunch of air guys randomly that have barely surfed Pipecome into a mix, or see the best compete against each other? I think the answer is pretty obvious there.

@@noahjm22 there’s at least 3 pipe contests every year, dudes get shacked in all of them. Koa was subtly throwing shade at Meola and Rasta Rob because Matt said he never ever surfs pipe, and Robbie is a Floridian kid known for sending huge airs. Personally, I don’t care, but I think it’s an interesting dynamic. Meola is Hawaiian born too

That’s right. It used to be the best event of the year!!!! Was a BIG deal! I felt it doesn’t have the same prestige and heart that it used to. Not the surfers, just the event.

They IGNORED John2x and Kelly Pulling out but threw the Brazilians under the Bus as quickly as they could.

the WSL condensed their year. The CT surfers want a longer amount of time off and the WSL wanted to save cost.

They changed it to encourage progression. At least that’s the way I see it. The other format wouldn’t give you any extra points for anything outside of getting tubed, which is fine but why not have one of these events where we do get to see something different, and new faces. Something a little different…

@@sctim123 I think Italo is responsible after pulling out of a barrel back door and throwing a mutant no-grab inverted reverse. Airs like that should be scored are no-brainers, but the best air shouldn’t be valued as high as the best barrel in the event. It’s about respecting the sanctity in the tradition. Showing gratitude for the marvel of Pipeline. It’s what made it unique and interesting really. I guarantee you Noa Deane is an invitee. Yup! Bahah, Will it be a crass commercial Red Bull air show?
