They should build an Olympic Island/city somewhere, and should host it there every time. Participating countries will pay a certain fee towards it and that will help the games to be hosted. This would be so much more economically and environmentally friendly as the venues will be reused every time, and can be upgraded to latest technologies every year.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I think I know how to solve the problem. The IOC needs to pocket less money and let the host cities actually make a profit. Then more and more cities will bid to host once they see that cities start making money instead of losing money.

You speak without any knowledge of funding for the Olympics. Ninety percent (90%) of the revenues from the Games go straight back into sport and athlete development. Around USD 2.5 billion is put towards the staging of the Olympic Games to ease the financial burden on the host cities. A total of USD 1.53 billion went towards staging Rio 2016 and USD 887 million for PyeongChang 2018. *International Olympic Committee contribution to the Winter and Summer Games* 2002 USD 552 million 2004 USD 965 million 2006 USD 561 million 2008 USD 1250 million 2010 USD 775 million 2012 USD 1374 million 2014 USD 833 million 2016 USD 1531 million 2018 USD 887 million Furthermore, the World Anti-Doping Agency's budget gets 50% of its funding from the International Olympic Committee. A substantial portion of the profits from the Games is allocated through the National Olympic Committees to help athletes and coaches from countries with the greatest financial need. Part of this money is used to fund Olympic scholarship programs which provide athletes in need with a monthly training grant as well as travel subsidies to compete in Olympic qualification competitions. *International Olympic Committee contribution to support National Olympic Committees* 2002 USD 87 million 2004 USD 234 million 2006 USD 136 million 2008 USD 301 million 2010 USD 215 million 2012 USD 520 million 2014 USD 199 million 2016 USD 540 million 2018 USD 215 million *International Olympic Committee contribution to International sports Federations* 2002 USD 92 million 2004 USD 257 million 2006 USD 128 million 2008 USD 297 million 2010 USD 209 million 2012 USD 512 million 2014 USD 199 million 2016 USD 540 million 2018 USD 215 million A considerable sum is also put towards the cost of staging the Youth Olympic Games every two years. 2010 USD 40 million 2012 USD 20 million 2014 USD 50 million 2016 USD 35 million 2018 USD 64 million

The IOC needs to be reformed. The IOC never lifts a finger to support their host cities, yet they swoop in and steal most of the profits. Ever since the 2000's, the IOC has been favoring grandeur over practically, and the IOC picking Rio over Madrid, a city that's actually capable of hosting the Games for the 2016 Games is proof of that. The IOC needs to built a strict criteria that every host candidate must fulfill in order to be eligible to run. Not a permanent host, but a permanent list of eligible hosts.

How to save the olympics: Step 1: Choose the poorest country that wants to host the event. Step 2: Make the participating countries pay accordingly to the number of medals they won last games. Wanna show how powerful your country really is? Help the weakest.
@DoctorHver

step 3: Have proper plan what you want to with the infrastructur thats built for the game. I think large part of the problem is the fact that there were often no plans in place of what to do with infrastructure once games are done.

Currently the Olympics benefit wealthier countries and people that can host or travel to the Olympics . We should be more inclusive. Countries should be able to bid for specific sporting events in the Olympics. This will allow small countries to host an Olympic event utilizing infrastructure they already have. This will also allow the working class people to attend an Olympic event.

Part of the problem is that with the Olympics, money is no problem. You can gouge to your hearts delight and the Olympics will pay. Giving an example from the Sydney 2000 Olympics. Most people have seen the large tents called "Hockers" after the company that makes them. Structurally they are amazing and can give a clear span of up to 60 metres, literally the size of a convention hall. For the Sydney games a number of these tents were bought by Australian companies and then hired out to the Olympics. The thing is that the hire cost was anything up to and including 150% of the cost of buying the tent. The Olympic committee could literally have bought the huge tents themselves, used them and sold them as scrap afterwards and it would have been cheaper. And don't even get me started on supplying orange juice at $75 per 2 litres in the "Refreshment" tents. The waste is tremendous, but it's your money and so they don't care.

The best solution for the Olympic host city debate is to have 8 cities ( 4 summer and 4 winter) to host the Olympics on a 16 year rotating basis. My 4 summer picks; Sydney, Tokyo, Los Angeles, and London. Winter picks: Lillehammer, St. Moritz, Pyeongchang, and Salt Lake City.

Great video, Cindy. I don't think this story gets reported nearly enough. More seriously, too many people are caught up in anachronistic concepts of modern media. All of the traditional conventions of the Olympic games were born before cable TV, satellite TV, DVRs, mobile devices, and the Internet. There was a need to gather all of the athletes in one place at one time because it made sense for the media coverage of the time (between the 1950s and 1980s). We are at least 30 years past that paradigm. As a single, necessary media event the Olympics is unnecessary. The games are logically designed to be played asynchronously. This means that different sports can be played in different countries, at different times within the same year. Nobody is going to pause their life to watch blocks of coverage anymore. The good news is that the asynchronous approach can theoretically increase the gross viewership.

So glad Boston dodged the Olympics. While it would be an ideal venue because many of the facilities are already built, hosting the games would have cost the taxpayer another 15 billion on top of just paying off the “Big Dig” which totaled around the same amount. A permanent location each for the winter and summer games would make more sense. I vote for Innsbruck and Stockholm.

Such an eye opener video, Thanks Cindy. SOLUTION I believe : IOC should learn from ICC-International Cricket Council and BCCI - Bombay Cricket Council of India and other cricket boards like Australia(except Pakistan). Just see how they are running international tournaments almost all around the year, earn big revenues and leave the host city with hell lot of benefits. Here, IOC acts as if they want to earn money....No, that shouldn't be the intention, if your purpose is to promote sports and harmony amongst nations. IOC should only pocket how much they need for their expenses, like salary of their staff, travel etc like in any other job/organisation. IOC should make sure, whatever the host country spends, should earn more than that. They should make sure, that whatever new venues are created, they should be re-used in future as well and not dismantled like what happened in Brazil and China and other host countries, because its not just for the money, this also causes a lot of damage to MOTHER EARTH and contributes to CLIMATE CHANGE and GLOBAL WARMING with such a huge waste. A sporting event should never be a cause of damage to the environment, rather it should be opposite. India, NEW DELHI saw such similar huge damage to their infrastructure and exchequer during COMMONWEALTH GAMES in 2010, the debt is still not over. We would never want to host Olympics which is probably 10 times the scale of CW Games just to showoff to the world while damaging our own country.

That has absolutely nothing to do with the Olympics. LA will no doubt profit well from the 2028 Olympics as they already have everything in place for it. Nazi Germany didn't worry about expenses to host the Olympics. That tells you what this high cost show is most important to what kind of people.

The Olympics was ruined by three things: 1. Allowing men to complete in the women's competitions 2. Russian doping 3. NBC's awful coverage

Ukraine could host the olympics seeing how they maintained their stadiums. Ukraine already has olympic stadiums, which are all well maintained. Problem is just the infrastructure, which is now in the mega project "Great construction" in which most roads are repaired by 2025. Its just too expensive for Lviv, which wanted to host it in 2022. Its good that ukraine didnt want to host it anymore

Can't we just work without money, I mean it will be vastly great for us but this is possible if only we are united.

People are become more and more practical. Money are not easy to quire. No need to spent so much money for few thousands people to show off how good they were training for the last 2-4 years. Who cares?

they should just do it in athens every year. have permanent infratructure for it. then it might make sense economically. I remember the athens games were the best ones I ever saw

One IOC is a racket. I wish the US would boycott the IOC. There's nothing wrong with sports competitions, but the IOC is a criminal enterprise.

I think the video missed the biggest issue which is the politics of it all. It has become toxic and a way to take jabs at geo political rivals. They have lost their spirit and no one is interested in watching them. A majority of those viewers are probably what I would call ghost viewers. They have it on TV but are not paying attention or even really care about it. It's on...so they have it on, simple as that. I think in this day and age we should just pack it in and find other ways to have international sports competitions. Maybe scale them down to where they aren't all sized up as long as they Olympics and hopefully less political and we can all have good event again.
