Hey Scotty, I have 2001 Dodge Ram 1500. When I first start it, fires up and runs amazing. But if I try to start it back up after it's sits for less than 10 minutes, it dies, I have tried many things in your vids, taking your advice and all. It runs amazing outside of this issue. I have changed the spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, pickup coil, I take care of it and don't run it hard, any advice?

Nope, Scotty called the 1999 to 2006 Celica crap because of its bad Yamaha engine design. He's said the same thing in other videos in the past. Just because a particular model of a car has the same name doesn't mean it has the same quality and longevity as an earlier car with that name. Sooooo.... Toyota's not "bringing back the Celica/Supra" these days: they're just launching totally different cars with the same names. And as Scotty just admitted yesterday: the 1996 Acura Integra is EVEN BETTER than the '94 Celica. That vid made me feel so good I drove my 97 Integra with 245K on the clock to work today. And yes, its AC still "blows ice cold"!!

Nope. GM, VW, BMW, Merc, Audi, Peugeot, Citroen, Renault, and some Fords won't. My brother in law's 2013 Explorer had 8K worth of problems in 5 years. Windows, locks, electric steering motor, Sunroof Motor, Hatch motor, rust...All those are not really preventable by driving slower/maintenance. Same with Nissan's CVT's or many DCT's. In Europe, all the I would say that most Korean/Japanese (except Nissan's) cars won't have problems if you take care of them.

I had a 2000 VVTI model and had it for about 12 years, didn't miss a beat, eventually traded it in at 186k miles for a 2004 VVTI celica with little to no miles on it and one owner from New. The only time I've heard about these engines failing is when people have modified them and driven them hard, or just not maintained them at all.

These engines had a couple of small issues (lift bolts, which is a very easy fix and was resolved in 2003) and the oil pan issue you mentioned (that is also easy to fix with a 1ZZ oil pan or a good aftermarket one for aggressive track racing), but otherwise they are excellent and have held up very well. Oil pump failures have happened to these pretty much exclusively because of driver error, dropping down into the wrong gear. My 2003 Celica GT-S has a 2ZZ-GE with 355,000 km on it. It is flawless. No leaks, works like new.

First of all, I love your channel to death, now secondly, you can't be any more wrong about this. I have a 2000 Celica GTS with the 2zz engine, manual transmission, bought her new 19 years ago, as of now she has 360,000 miles on the engine, the ORIGINAL engine. She is driven hard ever since I bought her, and has not broken down even once, never left me stranded. The horror stories about this car, were often caused by people miss shifting, because of the close gate 6 speed, where you accidentally shift from top of 3th back to second instead of 4th, and you guessed it, boom. Drive it everyday, change oil every 3000 miles, and it will last you. Take care Scotty.

I'm on my second 7 gen Celica at the moment, the reason I'm on a 2nd? Because the first one was so good. I had a 2000 VVTI model (the 140bhp without the lift) it was fast enough for the roads and handled fantastically and on country roads could easily keep up with more powerful stuff thanks to the cornering. The only reason I let it go was it was on 186k miles and I found a one owner 2004 model with little to no miles on it going cheap. My local mechanic actually bought my old celica from me once he heard I had a new one. My tip to you is go take a look at a few, don't touch anything that's had engine mods, because any ape could have fitted them, and go for a VVTI model, cheaper to insure, run and maintain because it doesn't have the complicated lift system. And try and go for a facelift 2002 or newer, they did a lot of improvements to the engine, fixing a lot of the stuff mentioned in this video. Lastly enjoy your celica when you get one

The problem is Toyota cheaped out on the oil pump gear. It was sintered metal, so when it sucked up any air, the cavitation would chip away at the gear or even cause it to explode. This wouldn't happen with a solid metal gear, which was available in the aftermarket. The pan issue was because of how well the car handled from the factory (think ITR). Put some sticky tires on it, take an offramp at 80mph, and you'd probably have an issue with no oil at the pickup on most cars. Also, note that the 2001+ Celicas had revised shift gates, because drivers couldn't drive and misshifted (still didn't stop them...). And the 2002+ Celicas lowered the rev limiter from 8400 to 7800. Another attempt to reduce the chance of blowing the engine on a misshift, but all it resulted in is hurting power (8400 is required to stay in lift from 1-2). Aftermarket solutions existed, but the 2000 Celica was the purest form of the car. The version of the 2000+ Celica that should be avoided is the 2000-2002 GT. The 1ZZ engine from those years was well known for oil consumption issues. Same issue in the Corolla and MR2 Spyder (which also inhaled its own precats!).
@Bobaganush26
@Bobaganush26 5 лет назад
I have never owned anything but a manual transmission. I've never miss a shift before I bought my Celly in 2000. I did it twice before they fixed it with upgraded shift gates. All fixed under warranty. Afterwards, no problems. I was going straight down into fourth, but second gear was engaging. So your slightly wrong blaming it on people that can't drive.

They did not put any baffles in the oil pan. That is a zippy engine and because they did not put baffles in the oil pan the oil washes away from the oil pump. It does this when you are revving the motor and really pushing it. It's my understanding that the same engine works just fine with the lotus platform because the oil pan has baffles. I might get myself one of those celica's one day. But I will change out the oil pan immediately. It's basically a poor man's front wheel drive lotus.

What about the prestigious Subaru engines that fail as easily as their transmissions? What about the latest turbines on BMWs? I've known several people whose turbine exploded and didn't even pull hard with their BMWs...

I have a friend that's also a mechanic. Worked for Toyota and many other places (dealerships and independent shops). He also agrees that Toyotas are the best built cars. Especially for working on, as they make an effort to make everything accessible. From my time owning and working on my own Toyotas and other brands, I can easily agree.

Well people dont know how to take care of their car? I have this car, im 17, and it has 270k miles and works perfectly fine, original engine
@Nippernator

The problems explained in this video were with the models up to 2002, Toyota then revised the design and dropped the rpm limiter and switched the point at which lift kicks in. They also revised the engine oil delivery system meaning that there were no oil starving issues. Proof of this is how many celicas have survived until today. Mine for example is an 03 with 167k miles on it. Original engine and only minor maintenance over the 6 years I've owned it. I admit I don't use the cheapest fuel but that's normal for anyone who respects their cars. Celicas were and still are bulletproof cars.

People in the comments saying scotty loosing is loosing It. Evey time Scott has talked about his celica he always ALWAYS compares the years of different celicas which were good or bad, you people are obviously not paying attention

I sold mine at 220k right before the sub frame snapped. The guy called me and told me the sub frame snapped on him and when they went to jack it up the jack point blew out on them.

Friend of mine got 2000 Celica 1.8vvt-i 140bhp, 6 speed manual.. what a great build little fast thing! He got it for 350€, needed front brake pads, 4 spark plugs, oil and filters! Everything else was stunning, clicking and working like Swiss watch! We drove that Celica through the whole europe during holidays and the following car for the trip (Opel Meriva 1.3cdti) (Italian jtd-M engine) had a alternator failure half the trip. We had to stop every 10miles and exchanging battery’s between the Celica and the Meriva. Day and night! The Toyota never broke down, simple 2 door small car but so well built!

scotty is right about the 2000 2zz engine problems. but i wanna say by 2002 toyota fixed the problems. i have an 05 matrix with 2zz and it has held up no problem. any problems toyota has which is rare they tend to fix it within a year or 2.

you buy one of these to have fun, not to put hundreds of thousands of miles on it. just buy a bog standard 1.6 corolla for driving around and it will run forever. Built For Purpose stressed engine - dies sooner duhh

I dunno, my 01 gts is at 156k miles and doesn't use a drop of oil between changes (7000) miles. It gets great mpg, like 34 on Hwy. I just don't plan on revving it over 5-6k rpm. Plus I always keep the oil level a tad over full. I use mid-range fuel so it's an extra few bucks per fill up. Omg, am I actually disagreeing with Scotty.....no.

You should definitely run 91/93 octane fuel, and enjoy actually revving your motor to redline as intended.

Bad practice to over-fill the oil as it doesn't do the oil seals and scraper rings any good.
