Maskless Ogerpon Art by MadZygardeCore: twitter.com/MadZygardeCore/status/1697349252681548130 I'm hosting a $2700+ Gen 3 OU Tournament. Check out the commentary here: www.youtube.com/@jimothygaming/videos
@@lennartstockl5826I mean it’s not as bad this time because it’s only 120 attack and you have to use your Tera on it for the attack boost. Also there is counterplay with flash fire storm drain and sap sipper and rock isn’t that good yet.
Something to note as well is that ogerpon hearthflame having mold breaker means it can 1v1 the current unaware mons and win. Dondozo dies to grass stab and doesn't have anything that hits it for super effective while clod can run poison stab but it's generally much better to run eq as an attack and also ivy cudgel fucks it up because it's not as physically bulky. Overall I actually really like ogerpon hearthflame as an offensive threat since it adds another layer of mind games to tera timing. You can tera early to get the plus 1 atk and super ivy cudgel if your confident you can win right there or you can save it so you keep mold breaker and the water and ground neutralities. Definitely interesting to see another layer to tera other than "will I use it on a different Mon" because on a mon as powerful as hearthflame ogerpon the answer is almost always no (see kingambit as the best example)
It's interesting how the only Unaware pokémon that can still try to tank is Skeledirge, since it resists both STABs and unboosted Stomping Tantrum won't really do that much to it.
@@asierx7047 dirge can't really do much in return tho. Ogerpon actually has decent spdef and it can't be burned so if your running hex as your ghost stab which most do then your kinda screwed. Also plus 2 stomping tantrum still hurts quite a bit and it's definitely getting a turn. And lastly if you tera'd already then your screwed. Still probably the best unaware matchup
@@SantosOverlord usually I stick with knock for the utility but play rough can be useful for stuff you can't hit super effectively or stuff you only hit super effectively with grass because even at plus 2 trailblaze probably isn't ohkoing tusk
I don't know how good that will be lol. Considering ogrepon has a random rock typing, we can assume terapagos will be rock type, which isn't super great in Ubers right now. It's gimmick will have to be really really good for it to be Ubers viable.
I think that the Grass/Rock Ogerpon is pretty underrated. It's a nice Lead that can lay out at least one layer of spikes, maybe go for a Swords Dance and Ivy Cudgel (Rock) is a great offensive move and can one shot Pokemon like Alolan Ninetales (common Lead) and even takes down the Fire-Ogerpon even if it loses the Speed Tie thanks to sturdy.
Grass/Fire Ogerpon is really juicy. Definitely the best one. Just don't fall into using Tera when Heatran is around and you don't have a Stomping Tantrum.
@@SantosOverlord But the likely threat of Stomping Tantrum, which Heatran is quad-weak to pre-Tera, will make a smart player hesitant to send it in against Ogerpon. Pokemon is a game of inches and prediction. The best players try to anticipate what their opponent will do and either try to counter that move or take advantage of an opening presented by a switch.
You know, if I had a nickel for every Gen 9 Pokémon that was essentially a lovable female gremlin running around smacking people with a big stick, I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice, right?
As a monofire trainer, I’m really happy with Ogerpon. One wood hammer can OHKO a full health Marvel scale Milotic. Great for coverage. I also love her adorable face. Though I keep trying to spell it Ogrepon instead of Ogerpon. I’m Australian, we spell words Re instead of er. Like centre.
even though it's not the best ability in the world, especially without being able to hold an item like boots, it's cool to see sturdy finally given to a pokemon that can take significant advantage of it. previously the only decent sturdy users were suicide hazard setters like shuckle, and i think it's actually a pretty cool ability on paper.
It also gets grassy glide so you can pair it with Rillaboom and feels so nice to play. It’s another way to beat truck room with grassy glide priority and a great move for Ogrepon-Heartflame. I’ve had a lot of fun pairing it with a few different partners like Torkal (helping hand and eruption and sun), imprison Farigiraf if I don’t have grassy glide so I can stop trick room, and Scald Milotic (Grass, Fire, Water coverage is amazing and hypnosis). I’ve also had success with follow me while using Flutter Mane and Iron Hands
As I commented on the first video on Ogerpon, I was disappointed by the leaks that boiled down to "yet another legendary with an ability that just grants +1 to X stat" but after seeing the finalized design I must say I'm quite pleased, all these different restrictions are good and healthy for the game while also being unique, I love how it changes ability and attributes only when using tera which is honestly how the entire mechanic should've worked from the beginning
ik megas weren't everybody's cup of tea, but i love how ogerpon feels like a mega in a new age. its ability to change roles mid game is super powerful for sure, but its known threat and predictability feels better than having to guess 1/3 viable teras on mons. also definitely excited to see more support sets, ive mostly been seeing swords dance go brr or trailblaze hearthflame
I believe that the second dlc will have more pokemon that gain benefits upon terastilizing and I am not talking about terapagos. I hope they will buff gengar.
Would be kinda neat to have a Tera variant of Glimmora. It seems to have this odd connection to terastal energy, and is weirdly prominent in places like the champion’s team.
Bruh Gengar does not need buffs that thing got so many buffs, a mega, a gigantimax, etc. that thing gets so much love already. How about all the other Pokémon that have gotten nothing since Gen 1/2?
At this point, I just appreciate that Ogrepon is no Calyrex. Strong, but still seems fair for the most part. I think the most telling part is that, if Tera gets banned (please), or just next gen when it's inevitably left by the wayside and forgotten, Ogrepon is gonna have *nothing special about it* to be worth fearing. It'll be a strong little guy, good attack and good speed, but nothing that's going to live in infamy for being busted like some of the Legends they've been using to market games and DLCs lately.
Yeah, it’s good that they’re holding back on the AG bait for now. The second dlc is probably going to be a balancing monstrosity though. If the dlc 1 main legend is this good, imagine what the dlc 2 main legend (that’s also supposed to be the trio master of Koraidon [NDAG] and Miraidon, presumably) will be like. Shiver me Timbers.
@@It-Will-All-Be-Okay-I-Promise I would be surprised if Terapagos was tied to the super-paradox motorcycle dragons. I think it's more likely to play with Terastalization like Ogrepon and not really have a relationship with the motorcycles than to be the Rayquaza to their Groudon and Kyogre.
@@parkerdixon-word6295 Yeah, but it’d be weird to just shirk a tradition that’s like 20 years old at this point without any notice. That’s not really GF’s flow when it comes to this stuff, so I’d be very surprised if we went this gen just without the boxlegend trio master. Terapagos by all accounts, fits the bill of serving an Eternatus/Necrozma style role with M and K, given its lore ingame being linked to that of the paradox Pokemon, so I’d be very shocked if it was just its own little creature with no relation to em.
I'm all for revealing Tera-type in Team Preview (it's already done in Open Team-Sheet formats like VGC), but outright banning it in Smogon would be a huge shame. It's not so broken like Dynamax and its boosted HP and souped-up moves was. All it is is changing type and allowing STAB to be kept on existing moves. Yes, Pokemon like Kingambit become much harder to deal with, but that's more because the common Tera-types like Ghost, Water and Fairy are just too good defensively. Overall, Tera adds so much depth to strategy - it encourages Pokemon that would be non-viable otherwise to be used, and also encourages out-of-the-box thinking. Of course, some Tera choices are obvious - most Pokemon like to Tera into a type that resists their counters/checks, or into one of their STABs, especially if it removes a common weakness. But imagine the satisfaction of pulling off a 5D-chess move by Tera-ing into something your opponent completely didn't expect. Plus, even if you know what Tera-types the opponent's 'mons are, you still have to figure out which one most likely to Terastallize in your battle and prepare a strategy to deal with that.
I'm glad we got what we have instead of another legendary with ridiculous base stats its stats are good but not ridiculous like some other pokemon we have seen like the paradox pokemon
While I recognize the advantages for the other forms, Cornerstone has been so fun to use in Sandstorm in Doubles. The SpDef boost is so helpful and with a partner like Flutter Mane or Fezindipidi plus sandstorm, you can slow the oponent/chip them enough to knock them out. Helps that with the popularity of Hearthflame, your own Ivy Cudgel can knock it out rather easily.
my favorite one is the cornerstone one, like you said an almost guarenteed swords dance. With a 120 base power 100% accurate rock move, hornleech/trailblaze for grass stab and utility for itsel and ground or fighting coverage makes it really hard to switch into after it has set up.
You did that whole Hearthflame analysis and completely forgot to mention Sun boosting the Fire STAB even more, and enabling it to run SOLAR BLADE as its Grass STAB. Running this with a setter like Torkoal allows you to double up on your Fire Nuke potential and debatably Tera either one of them... and having any weather setter at all has the additional benefit of giving you a hard-read counter to Alolan Ninetails spam and them going for immediate Aurora Veils to facilitate their own broken setup sweepers.
ogerpon-wellspring got a single free turn against me swept my entire team while burnt because my steel type was Empoleon (I did play bad but i thought i had counterplay that just wasn't real)
It's kinda cool how even if the Hearthflame form turns out to be too broken and needs to be banned, at least there's the option to just ban the Hearthflame Mask as an held item without damaging any of the other forms' place in OU. Not trying to start an argument here, just trying to see the silver lining at the end of the debate since I'm not an experienced competitive player myself.
I can kinda see Ogerpon Cornerstone being a niche option on Sand teams. Sandstorm will increase its Sp Def, so with Embody Aspect giving it Def will increase its bulk by a good margin (plus it has the only 100% accurate rock move, that being Ivy Cudgel).
The grass form with choice band is nasty. Grass isnt a great offensive typing, but ivy cudgel is just such a reliable move, and the speed boosts means you outspeed every non-scarf mon, and most scarf ones if you go jolly.
Shoutout to the cool Grass/Rock typing. Took them long enough since Cradily. They are really cool compliments of each other, Rock protecting Grass from Fire/Flying/Poison while Grass protects rock from Water and Ground.
What you forgot to mention about the four forms is that only the Grass form can hold items. That means you can use a Choice Band set + Tera Grass to pretty much outspeed + OHKO every Pokémon it hits with Ivy Cudgel or Wood Hammer. You can also give it a Scope Lens to increase the critical hit rate of Ivy Cudgel, or use Focus Energy to guarantee it crits every time.
I think base Ogerpon could be nice with a Banded set. Embody Aspect Speed boost is nice and the immediate power of band can let Ogerpon do more. It's also more defensively viable than Meowscarada since it's not the terrible Grass/Dark type.
After tera, firepon 2hkos every pokemon. You'd expect a maximally physically bulky water type to at least survive a hit or two, but max physical defense pex is nearly 2hkoed by a resisted ivy cudgel, not to mention it dies to a following horn leech and especially a wood hammer.
@A_quip it's speed isn't too overbearing it looses moldbreacker after terra. Plus it forces you to use your terra on ogerpon. Otherwise if you can put your opponent in a position where they terra a different mon it becomes safer. Plus it's week to entry hazards that are particularly common this gen.
I hope they don’t ban it, although it will be high usage rate as it 1v1s both tusk and gambit in fire form at full, and can do both if they give you gambit first for whatever reason.
heartflame is strong for the reasons of being complimentary in every way possible that isn't revolving around Bulk. Not only does it got a Great typing in Fire and Grass which smites Waters, Rock and Ground Targets but also got Fire which smites Steel (which would resist grass), other Grass types, and Ice types. On top of the fact you cannot be burned and get hit neutrally by water and ground attacks. Then gave it a good attack stat 120 with mold breaker while its stab Options are strong hitting with Ivy Cudgel and Wood Hammer (Or Trailblaze). Since it has Mold Breaker, it can ignore the abilities *Flash Fire* (As said in the video) and also *Unaware* meaning its boost can go undeterred. Heatran is one of the targets that wants no smoke since Heatran runs Tera Grass so regardless of the situation, Heatran don't want to be smited by Ivy Cudgel. Once those targets are down, tera into fire and you proceed to kill the entire enemy squadron with pure wallbreaking potential. *Really the only downside to Ogerpon's Heartflame mask is a stealth rock weakness* *Heartflame can be "Predictable". Really just a question of "How you gonna manage it" because one slip up and this thing ends careers XD* If given a singular turn, it can wipe out the entire enemy line with nearly no pushback.
i quite like the design of these legends and its clear that they put actual thought into them rather than the treasures of ruin just being minmaxed monsters, but the fire one really ruins that. its item gives a 20% multiplicative boost, tera fire enhances stab and gives an attack boost, trailblaze boosts speed, and it has access to swords dance and sun. then give it a 100bp no drawback fire move and it's completely unstoppable
@@milonchello1643I can see Okidogi having a niche in OU. He actually does have some potential. Fezandipity as well actually. No clue about Munkidori, havent tested him
I've been playing DOU, so here's my take on the 4. Grass is good but a bit to one dimensional. It's all in on Grass which isn't a great offensive type and other moves lack the power needed. Unless you allow it to set up, you can typically do better. Stone, I really wish I could slap a Scarf on it. It's good but it's just got to many weaknesses to really be top tier. Water, this is the one I'm using and honestly, I think it's perfect for doubles. It resists so much, it's Tera ability is great against a lot of mons, and pair it with Rain for extra damage. It just is so strong while also being able to fully take advantage of support. Fire, strong, but it's defenses aren't good enough to brute force several great mons. You're really relying on killing everything before they kill you, and between speedier mons and priority it can be taken advantage of. Strong but not broken.
I don’t think Operpon-hearthflame should be banned in singles, although it’s string right now I think people will figure out good ways to hard counter it and then we will start seeing more diverse sets on it.
I find it interesting that Ogerpon's different masks and types actually complement each other well in different ways. The Cornerstone Mask form's Rock/Grass typing is actually a good combination - the two types, normally very poor defensively by themselves, cover each other's weaknesses well. Rock turns Grass' weaknesses to Poison, Flying and Fire to neutral, while Grass turns Rock's weaknesses to Water, Ground and Grass to neutral, leaving it only weak to Steel, Bug, Ice and Fighting. It also doesn't have many longevity issues thanks to its access to Leech Seed, Synthesis, and Horn Leech. Plus, Sturdy lets it live the common Ice and Fighting attacks that would otherwise one-shot it, Swords Dance up, then Tera and go for the sweep with the best direct-damage Rock move in the game - Ivy Cudgel (Rock). I thought that Water Absorb was kind of useless on a Pokemon that's already 4x resistant to Water, but that Ability would make it a perfect Scald absorber now that the move has returned as a TM. It can switch in on an expected Scald, then either KO or force out the user with another Grass STAB like Wood Hammer (or at least the threat of it). Water and Grass is also a great defensive combo, with Grass turning both of Water's weaknesses to neutral, while Water turns Grass' Fire weakness to neutral, leaving it only with Bug, Rock and Flying as a weakness. And even if something with Mold Breaker attacks Wellspring-Ogerpon with a Water move, she will still quad-resist the attack. She does have to be careful of Pokemon with Freeze Dry pre-Tera, as she'll be quad-weak to it. In VGC, it will be highly vulnerable to the likes of Iron Bundle. But the Fire one is obviously where it's at, offensively. Grass/Fire has good offensive coverage, with Fire hitting the Steels that would resist its Grass STAB, while Grass hits the Rock, Ground and Water types that would stymie Fire-types. Under the sun facilitated by Torkoal, not much is going to survive its Fire-type Ivy Cudgel, especially after it Teras. Of course, Synthesis helps with its longevity, especially under sun. I suspect once Gen 9's Restricted meta starts in VGC, we're going to see a lot of Koraidons paired with Hearthflame Ogerpons. Oh, and Mold Breaker means she can absolutely demolish Pokemon that depend on the Unaware Ability to tank stuff.
Ogerpon is rhe cutest legendary, and terapagos will also be super cute. Also, they have almost same eyes and have a Tera form. I also heard that Koraidon and Miraidon will also get a launcher kindof 😂 tera form.
How does ogerpon interact with trick/knock off? What if you get your masked swapped/removed before/after tera? Does your ability change? What if you tera fire then get your fire mask knocked off? Or get tricked a water mask?
Tbh ogrepon isnt banworthy imo. It has an exploitable weakness being the masks kinda telegraph and most movesets are Ivy cudgle, Horn leech, swords dance etc. Its honestly easy to play around if you think for a bit and dont just slam a button... which is how a legendary should be I love my peanut shaped daughter
Cornerstone is imo the best one. Grass/Rock is a type combo that covers the most types. Fire needs coverage for Dragon and Fire type, while Water needs coverage for Dragon and Grass types. Rock only needs coverage for Steel where it getd good Fighting coverage. It’s Tera is also good against priority from slower Pokemon. Kingambit’s Tera Dark Black Glass max SO Sucker Punch doesn’t OHKO Ogerpon after +1 Def.
Whoah......what happens when pokemon moves on from terastralizing as a game mechanic....is ogerpon the only pokemon that can do it outside of S/V or......?
Id imagine it mught be like battle bond, that being it gets a stat boost after a certain requirement is filled, like koing or the use of a specifc move/item
