But, we believers DON'T!!!! We do not fear hell. We know our church pastor could make lots more doing something else. We gave $ 75,000+ to the food bank, homeless shelter, foreign aid for Sudan and Ukraine. We employ 6 people full time. We celebrate festivals, have pot lucks, meetings in small groups, picnics. GOD IS LOVE We know He lets us be His eyes ears, hands hearts. We swing hammers for Habitat for Humanity. God expects US to do His will. Wherever we are blessed, we are expected, no, commanded to heal a broken world. Our pastor does couple counseling for families which otherwise might divorce. We teach our boys getting a girl pregnant is wrong, to be honorable men. We teach our girls not to be alone where boys can take advantage, and have even had self-defense training. Our teachers always work in pairs and get training to avoid what could be, or could be misconstrued, as child abuse. We teach our children God loves them but bad things can happen. But even the worst can be later used by Him for a greater good. Please describe how the atheist equivalent of churches do what we do, because I do not know much about your gatherings, fund raising events, corporate education about atheist equivalent of the 10 Commandments.

Yep. The _abuse_ of bringing children up in _any_ religious/cult belief system needs to be recognised as such and banned. We don’t (if we’re responsible) let children have access to porn or recreational drugs, so why is it legal to expose them to far more dangerous material, such as the torah, bible and qur’an? The results of such exposure aren’t just potentially damaging to the children, but to the wider society, in a range of ways. No one under the age of 18 should be allowed to read such dangerous nonsense, it literally changes the way that people “think”, and it’s to their detriment.

Another Twain quote - It's not the things that you don't know that get you into trouble, it's the things that you think you know for sure that just ain't so. But I will point out the entertainment value of organized religion (which is admittedly often hard to find, especially when on the rack or some such device for persuasion), namely the piles of dogma that those who have the calling to preach come up with. Jaysus, Jaysus, Jaysus, it can be fun to watch a holy fella get down and boogie in the meanings of obscure words in some book that he holds highest! He goes on and on like he has found a doorknob to the vault of everlasting truth! It is so cute when they get so excited; the showmanship and fervor of the afflicted huckster can be awe inspiring. But then you realize that he scripted the entire show, practiced it and tuned it, for maximum dramatic effect on his flock.

@@pathfinder1273 Why do you feel the need to attack me Pathfinder and describe my post as a "rant"? In no stretch of the imagination could it been described as a rant. My post describes a common human characteristic to be "Tribal" and does this in very simple terms so all can understand. Religion: The area where Jesus was born was occupied by the armies of Herod The Great who was a friend and ally of Rome. The people, who ranged from Mesopotamia to Egypt, recognized their powerlessness in the face of cruelty and injustice and either succumbed or formed and "underground movement" as we have seen throughout the ages. A common human characteristic. And so began religion as I described in my post. Here's a fun fact for you: In Norse Pagan religion, the God's granted life to an Ash and an Elm tree. From branches of these trees came man and woman (Genesis?). And the Sumerians wrote of a great flood (Noah?) in the Epic of Gilgamesh in 2150 BCE long before the Old Testament. 👋😎 Have a nice day.

It is a FACT that some "cultures" are much worse than others. When one thinks of "culture" one probably thinks of magnificent buildings, unusual and colourful festivals or celebrations, amazing artworks, interesting ways of dressing, but, more often than not, "culture" is just an excuse to treat women and other animals badly. It's not racist to point this out, but, bizarrely, I've been called racist, and this is doubly offensive, not just because it isn't true, but because I'm the son of a muslim immigrant and have been on the receiving end of REAL racism, in a variety of ways, including physical violence, and not getting at least one job. Some belief systems are associated with certain cultures*, but that doesn't stop them being unacceptable, illogical, immoral, observably corrosive and inconsistent with themselves and observable reality, and incompatible with democracy and DECENT values. * In the case of islam, it's more an anti-culture, being anti dancing, anti most types of artistic expression, anti free speech, even anti TV and music, in its most extreme forms.

True. We are not equal, not in culture, not in mentality, not in the average level of IQ. We are here, because we were different from Neanderthals, and as of today, we still have these differences, we simply ignore them. Segregation is not racism. I won't force my ideology onto others, and I won't let others to do so. Simple. True, absolutely, but yourself, friends and family are demonstrably real people. And when having faith in other people, it's based on evidence. You have faith in someone because they've demonstrated somehow that they'll live up to your expectations. I think that kind of faith is different than religious faith, which is belief with no evidence, or belief despite contrary evidence.

3:54 It isn't just that. Belief is one thing, action is another. Yes faith is when you assign greater certainty that is warranted by the evidence, but that is all well and acceptable when the cost of holding that belief to be true is low. It fails to matter. Conversely, when it involves large amounts of effort on your part expending your finite resources to a greater degree the act of holding a belief with greater certainty than is warranted by evidence becomes more and more foolish. It's taking a greater risk of loss and missed opportunity due to being wrong.

i'm not defending religions here but Dr. Michael Shermer's reference to Ayaan Hirsi Ali shouldn't have been in this video bcs she recently reverted back to religion from Atheism - she's now Christian, an Abrahamic religion. Ayaan Hirsi Ali was dishonest opportunist who was disowned & discredited by her own immediate family including her siblings, & after she was expelled from Europe, she was used by N. American Muslim haters to bash Muslims. For sure Islam never allowed Female Genital Cutting (a.k.a FGM) anytime. FGM started before Islam probably in North Africa's Pharoah dynasty & spread through the river Nile or trade routes to East Africa. This's why Saudi Arabia, Gulf Arab States or the Muslim Levant etc never practiced FGM ever. Islam, Judaism etc & modern medicine (like the UN's WHO etc) allow men to be circumcised for health reasons. Infact, HIV AIDS & other STD were medically proven to be more common in uncircumcised men & gays etc. Shame on Islam haters like Sam Harris who singles out Islam bcs of his ancestral ethnicity.

To believe in something from faith... faith that something is true without any evidence. I'm not really sure what that really means? When I was a Christian, I was always told that, then reading about Peter having a little faith briefly and falling into the sea of galilee. Jesus even said to Peter, "Oh thee of little faith why does one doubt thee..." John 14:12-14 where Jesus himself says, "He who believes in me will do works I have been doing..." I still waiting to see EVERY Christian who believes in Jesus, do great works as Jesus did. Where is their faith, I asked myself as a young Christian? They would redirect my attention with a diverting bible verse to get away from the question. This is another reason why western religion makes no sense!

@philmason7860 Good to know philmason7860. The word 'God' always leaves a bad taste in my mouth. The biblical 'God' does not exist in my world any longer. The word 'God' has been defiled by religions and in no way defines what the Divine source really is. The biblical God and the Divine source of everything are completely opposite from one another. And these days, quoting the bible is redundant at best. Quote 'Alan Watt's or Christopher Hitchen's. When someone says, 'The bible says...' I just roll my eyes. Anyway, I digress.

If you're still going to church and keeping up the pretense, it might be best to ease your way out of it, rather than just dropping it on them like a bomb. They love you and want the best for you, but they also need to respect you and your beliefs (or lack). When my mom was dying, she asked me if I thought she would go to Heaven. I wouldn't have said that I thought there was no such thing. I think I said "If anyone's going to Heaven, it's you." So sometimes I think it's better to keep up the pretense to keep people happy, but don't let them do things you're uncomfortable doing. It's a really complicated issue and definitely not going to get solved in the YT comments section! But regardless, best of luck and keep the (lack of) faith!

Genesis ... where s/he could create whole new universes with planets and stars, creatures he could care for and others he could hurt, and even invent stuff like light, and black wholes, and ... the options are endless!" Science is a left hemisphere activity, as it categorizes, "makes sense of" a reduced, simplified model of reality. Religion is right brained, along with art, literature, poetry, is extra-rational, because it is mostly experiential and social. The verbal brain finds religion meaningless, even ridiculous, because it is outside it's scope of understanding, unless it is open to religious experience as a genuine part of the paradoxes found in human existence. Religion can be placed on a spectrum opposed to science as left brain processing, but it is more accurately like a y axis to a scientific, rational x axis. The first sentence of the Tao te Ching best sums it up.

There is a paradox in it because Jesus was raised in an organized religion. The religions kind of preach that men are savages or beasts until the society showed up with rule of law. When you say organized religion you're also talking about government. But the paradox of catholicism is that Jesus is working against organized religion. But they teach you that in Catholicism. An organized religion can intentionally disrupt human behavior in order to make humans need the religion. English did that in their society with a workhouse system. Or with slavery they take people out of their native environment and system and put them somewhere else where they don't know how to survive. You can intentionally sell people drugs to mess them up and the offer to save them. But that's the central theme of Catholicism. How do you know if someone is telling you the truth?

Are we to suppose that creation was turned over to us the creature and God was then relegated to a waiter to be judged according to the quality of his service to us? Are we also to suppose that God created without intent or purpose and simply waits for his creature to draw up the rules that it might condemn Him? @@sandrathomas2893 He's also fictional. He's no more real than the other fictional gods from the ancient Near East. Scholarship below. --------------------------------------------------------- According to the general consensus of scholarship *(even critical Christian scholars),* YHWH was originally incorporated into the Canaanite pantheon as a son of the Canaanite high god El before inheriting the top spot in the pantheon and El's wife Athirat (Asherah) before religious reforms "divorced" them. El's pantheon in Ugarit (modern day Ras Shamra in Syria) is called the *Elohim,* literally the plural of El. Interestingly, the Biblical god is also referred to numerous times as Elohim. If you want to see if El is fictional, just read his mythology in the Ugaritic/Canaanite texts. "The mysterious Ugaritic text Shachar and Shalim tells how (perhaps near the beginning of all things) *El* came to shores of the sea and saw two women who bobbed up and down. *El* was sexually aroused and took the two with him, killed a bird by throwing a staff at it, and roasted it over a fire. He asked the women to tell him when the bird was fully cooked, and to then address him either as husband or as father, for he would thenceforward behave to them as they called him. They saluted him as husband. He then lay with them, and they gave birth to Shachar ("Dawn") and Shalim ("Dusk"). Again *El* lay with his wives and the wives gave birth to "the gracious gods", "cleavers of the sea", "children of the sea". The names of these wives are not explicitly provided, but some confusing rubrics at the beginning of the account mention the goddess *Athirat (Asherah),* who is otherwise *El's* chief wife, and the goddess Raḥmayyu ("the one of the womb"), otherwise unknown." *"First, a god named El predates the arrival of the Israelites into Syria-Palestine.* Biblical usage shows El was not just a generic noun, but often a proper name for Israel’s God (e.g., Gen 33:20: “El, the God of Israel”)." "I should add here that it is very clear from the grammar that the noun nachalah in v. 9 should be translated “inheritance.” *Yahweh receives Israel as his “inheritance” (nachalah), just as the other sons of El received their nations as their inheritance (nachal, v. 8).* With this verb, especially in the Hiphil, the object is always what is being given as an inheritance. Thus, Israel is given to Yahweh as his inheritance. ((Here I’m indebted to Dan McClellan.)) It would make no sense for Elyon to give himself an inheritance. Moreover, as I’ve argued elsewhere, it is not just the Gentile nations that are divided up according to the number of the *sons of El.* It is all of humankind, i.e., “the sons of Adam.” This clearly includes Israel. And the sons of Adam are not divided up according to the number of the *sons of El,* plus one (i.e., plus Elyon). They are divided up, according to the text, *solely* according to the number of the *sons of El.* *Thus, that Yahweh receives Israel as his inheritance makes Yahweh one of the sons of El mentioned in v. 8. Any other construal of the text would constitute its rewriting.* A Sumerian hymn speaks to the goddess: “Nanshe, your divine powers are not matched by any other divine powers.” *Does this mean that Nanshe was the high goddess, that there were no gods above her? No, it does not.* Nanshe was the daughter of Enki, the high god. *In Sumerian mythology, as with Ugaritic, Israelite, Babylonian, and others, in the ancient past, the high god (Enki, in this case) divided up the world and assigned his children certain domains.* Nanshe was given a limited domain (the modern Persian Gulf) and was tasked with maintaining social justice there. *This is exactly what we see in Deuteronomy 32 with Yahweh. Yahweh is given a limited domain (Israel) and is given authority over his people, to punish them, as well as to protect and defend them against foreign enemies.* That Yahweh, like Nanshe, is said to have incomparable divine power *does not* mean that he is not subordinate to the high god who gave him his domain. *It is also of note that Nanshe, like Baal, Yahweh, and so many other deities, evolved over time. Her domain increased, and she was promoted in the pantheon (although she never became the high goddess)."* *"The Most Heiser: Yahweh and Elyon in Psalm 82 and Deuteronomy 32 - Religion at the Margins"* based on the *majority scholarly consensus.* (Written by Thom Stark who is a Christian) *"Michael Heiser: A Unique Species? - Religion at the Margins"* (A second response to Michael Heiser) *"Excerpt from “Yahweh and the Gods and Goddesses of Canaan” by John Day - Lehi's Library."* *"The Table of Nations: The Geography of the World in Genesis 10"* - TheTorah.com (Excluding the short narrative on Nimrod (vv. 8-12), *which appears to be a later addition,* Genesis 10 contains *70* names of nations or cities, a number that was symbolic of totality. Similarly, the descendants of Jacob were *70* in number (Gen 46:37; Exod 1:5), *as were the sons of the supreme Canaanite god El, with whom YHWH became equated.)* *"Polytheism and Ancient Israel’s Canaanite Heritage. Part V | theyellowdart"* (Of course, much of this [i.e., that Israel worshiped El and Asherah alongside YHWH] is really to be expected given that recent syntheses of the *archaeological, cultural, and literary data* pertaining to the emergence of the nation of Israel in the Levant *show that most of the people who would eventually compose this group were originally Canaanite. As the Hebrew Bible notes, the Hebrew language itself is a Canaanite language, literally the “lip of Canaan” (שְׂפַת כְּנַעַן; Is. **19:18**), and so it cannot often be distinguished by modern scholars from other Canaanite inscriptions on purely linguistic grounds.)* *"Ugarit - New World Encyclopedia"* (Ugaritic religion centered on the chief god, Ilu or El, whose titles included "Father of mankind" and "Creator of the creation." The Court of El was referred to as the (plural) 'lhm or ***Elohim,*** a word ***later used by the biblical writers to describe the Hebrew deity*** and translated into English as "God," in the singular. El, which was ***also the name of the God of Abraham,*** was described as an aged deity with white hair, seated on a throne.) *"Mark Smith: Yahweh as El’s Son & Yahweh’s Ascendency - Lehi's Library"* (Mark Smith is a Catholic) *"God, Gods, and Sons (and Daughters) of God in the Hebrew Bible. Lesson here folks: you go into something with the intention of keeping your biases intact, you can expect to come out with them still intact. I guess what is most unfortunate is that this content creator actually took the time to compile all of this and edit it together... Have you not more important things going on in your day-to-day? Haha sorry for taking that jab... But you could argue I'm here taking time out as well hahaha! Keep an open mind, find time to study instead of looking for superficial misunderstandings you think you can use to "rip apart" Christianity, and you might find yourself convinced as well😊 Life is shorter than you think, and the soul is very real. That's why they call it "soul searching" after all. If you take a humble approach to looking inside yourself, understanding that you are, (just like everyone else on this earth, myself included), far from God's perfection, you might just find the peace you're looking for in Christ.
