Was Palpatine a good guy?
Throughout humanities existence, history has always been written by the victors. The same is true in star Wars. Written by the notable Republic and Jedi sympathizer, George Lucas, the original trilogy shows the events of Star Wars from the point of view of the victorious rebel alliance.
We are therefore presented with the view that the rebels were freedom fighters who are hellbent on restoring the good and righteous Republic. On the other hand, the empire is presented as a tyrannical regime, led by two evil and selfish Sith Lords.
The Mandalorian and the Prequels have briefly delved into the opposing view, that the Republic was corrupt and chaotic while the Rebels were a terrorist group, from a certain point of view, but despite this, it is still the widespread view that Palpatine is in fact evil.
In this video, we will be exploring the alternative perspective and asking the question, Was Palpatine actually a force for good in the Star Wars Galaxy?
So first of all, yes Palpatine did some awful things. He orchestrated the Clone Wars, Blew up Alderaan and implemented a harsh and oppressive regime across the galaxy. And of course these are all awful things. However, to determine whether these actions were actually justified within the context of the Star Wars Galaxy, we must first explore some philosophy surrounding morality and what actually makes someone good or evil.
The moral philosophy of consequentialism might suggest that Palpatine was actually a good guy. In its most basic form consequentialism suggests that the consequences of someones actions should form the basis in understanding whether or not those actions are right or wrong. For example, if an evil genius was about to blow up London, a consequensialist would argue that it would be morally right to kill the evil genius in order to save the lives of all the Londoners, even though murder is usually seen as morally wrong.
As we shall explore in this video, the same can be argued for Palpatine, only on a much grander scale.
After the events of the original trilogy in legends, an extra-galactic species known as the yuuzung vong greatly threatened the galaxy. The yuuzung vong had taken over and destroyed their own galaxy thousands of years before the battle of Yavin and had spent the majority of that time in the void between galaxies, their sights set firmly on invading the star wars galaxy. What made this species so terrifying was their advanced organic technology and fierce devotion to a crusade against machinery.
This species had originally been peaceful, but a war between two advanced AI pushed the yuvung vongs culture into a dark and violent direction. Using their biological technology, they eventually drove the AI from their galaxy. They soon turned their advanced weaponry on each other and other biological species. The resulting war left their whole galaxy uninhabitable. The survivors spent the next few thousand years travelling to the galaxy far far away on thousands of 100 km bioships. The first yuvung vong scouts ships arrived during the Old Republic era, with just one small probe ship decimating a whole brigade of neo-crusader Mandalorians, it's weapons able to melt through baskar armour as though it was wax. When the main invasion arrived around 30 years after the battle of yavin, 325 trillion inhabitants of the star wars galaxy were wiped out, far more than the clone wars and the galactic civil war combined. It was only through sheer luck that the New Republic was able to defeat them and in all problibilty, the yuzung vong should have completely steam rolled them.
So how is this related to Palpatine being good? Well in actual fact, Palpatine was one of the few individuals who was aware of this incoming invasion and had been informed about the yuvung vong, known to him as the far outsiders, well before the Clone Wars took place by. In fact, the reason for Grand Admiral Thrawn joining the empire was to help organise the galaxy into a military machine that could protect his species, the Chiss, from the inpending invasion. Likewise, Palpatines acceptance of Thrawn into his human centric military was largely because he held information on the Vong.
Palpatine and the Sith believed in the pursuit of power and order, with the Empire simply being a reflection of these beliefs. The Sith believed that the pursuit of peace would lead to stagnation, arrogance and weakness, allowing for more powerful enemies to ultimately defeat them. The revelation of the Yuzung Vong would provide Palpatine with just more reasons to destroy the Republic and implement a tough and ordered society mainly focused upon creating ever more powerful superweapons under the Sith Philosphy. He believed that without dramatic change, the galaxy would ultimately be doomed by more powerful enemies such as the vong because of the Republics apathetic and self serving Government

No, he was pure evil. He wanted power, he didn’t care about the Galaxy in any way other than as a playground for himself to rule over. Why does he have to revoke the individual rights of the people? Why did he need to destroy the Jedi order and completely commit genocide on them? Why did he need to have super weapons like the Death Star or Eclipse Super Star Destroyer created when all he really needed were his fleets of normal Star Destroyers and some other variations of the design? It’s quite simple: he wanted power. He built the Empire so he would have the most power, he’s a Sith, and he always wanted to have power, which is what the Sith strive for. He believed himself to be a god, and wanted to rule over all others with impunity, and his orchestration of the Clone Wars and his many other atrocities and sins, make it clear that he was pure evil. He had no good intentions, he just wanted power, nothing more.

The empire that killed and enslaved millions of innocent people in their selfish goal to rule the Galaxy? The same empire that was so blinded by dogma and propaganda that they basically did what Jim Jones did to his population by having most of their people kill themselves? The Republic didn’t really do any of the killing, the Sith populations across Sith space mostly did that to themselves, either out of fear and loyalty to their Empire and fear Republic retaliation, or were forced to by their leaders who would’ve rather have their people die than be captured by the Republic. The Republic’s “Sith Holocaust” was mostly not even their fault, it was the Sith’s, but the mass death was used by people like Darth Vitiate to galvanize their people into hating the Republic and Jedi. Make no mistake, the Sith, as usual, destroyed themselves, not the other way around.

For example the Holocaust - Hitler's idea was based on a wrong perception of evolution and genetic science, which can only be called a mistake (a devastating mistake that cost millions of lives, but nonetheless a mistake) and also the inclusion of feelings in his judgement (hatred towards the allied and blaming jews for ww1). But when we refuse to consider these things and just pretend he was an evil person, we fall into the trap where these mistakes would be repeated; and history's purpose should be to not let that happen after all. Also when we blindly hate on him we fall into the same trap as he did, feelings should not cloud our judgements (yep, with the Jedi on this one lol) What we should have learned from the Holocaust is that to be careful of what exactly science says, and excluding feelings when deciding on something - and blaming and hatred is not worth anything and will result in catastrophe sooner or later...but what lesson we ended up is that Hitler is a bad guy, racism is bad and blame it on him and move on

Unfortunately, most book and comic writers are too dumb to realize that, and just made him more evil than in the films. Especially Disney era comic books, where it seems he existed only to punish Vader. Luceno's "Darth Plagueis" provides an interesting perspective, but not much on his thoughts (to preserve a twist), aside from him hating his family, esp. his dad. I'd recommend the comic books about anti-Sith coups, where Palpatine actually gets hurt and has to rely on his closeness with Vader to even survive. It's well shown that the two still had their friendship from the Clone Wars, until Vader finds out about his missing son (which makes him realize Palps lied that he killed Padme in anger).

Even if the invasion was wrong. Back to the main topic, it is because of their limited vision on the galaxy they could not protect allies worlds when these were threaten (not all jedi were Anakin or Obi wan) and they lack of the military experience made them softer and easy to he destroy. Self-preservation and altruism are not mutually exclusive principles. Palpatine was and is still exactly the monster he appears to be, but he was also extremely intelligent and forward-thinking, it's how he got to the position of Emperor in the first place. Like Julius Caesar, he identified a sick and fragile system that just needed a bit of war and a smart leader to take the reins and clear out the gunk. The difference is that Julius Caesar wasn't pure evil, and though he wanted power, his rule was buttressed by a strong sense of nationalism for his countrymen, so when he HAD that power, he executed policies that helped people and were well beloved BY the people. Palpatine's just a fuckin' dick and he executed repressive and harsh policies that restricted freedom for the sake of keeping his newly created empire in one piece.

If he really wanted power all for himself he wouldn't want to vader suprass him and take the thrown.

Let us not forget who ordered the mass genocide of jedi younglings, or planets in fact. No , palpatine was undeniably the villain, he only built his navy to spread fear. And even if it was to fight outside invaders, everything would be at his benefit anyway. He lusted power and was uncaring of who he killed to get it, be they innocent or not.

Even assuming everything in this video is true, I still say Palpatine was a villain. Sure, he could have saved the whole galaxy from the Vong, but he would have abused the Empire's military machine and ruled with an iron fist. Of course, the interesting thing about power is that you usually stop being a good guy once you have enough of it.

Ask any non-human or person living in the Outer Rim about life in the Empire. There had to have been better ways to prepare for invasion besides creating a horrible empire for most of the galaxy’s population. Even when the Republic had the clone army, it still kept many morals alive as the Clone Wars raged on. And Palpatine never told the public about the invaders even after becoming emperor to justify his empire. There may be a few points the Empire makes about democracy being corrupt, but it did few things to convince people it was better besides bringing order at the cost of freedom. You need a balance, not one more than the other. And this is so far only for Legends, so does he have some other justification in canon or is he sci-fi Hitler to the core?
@Blackdeathgaming-yv1kk
@Blackdeathgaming-yv1kk 2 года назад
What you're also forgetting is that the republic basically had no actual power over a big part of the outer rim. Lots of worlds in the hands of crime families etc. Also lots of planets in the outer rim joined the CIS. The empire was more oppressive there for these reasons which in turn got more resistance going. It became a vicious circle.

If galen marek or his clone had been in the new jedi order series either one would have been an a valuable ally to the new jedi and the republic considering how powerful he was with the light and dark sides of the force. As for palpatine i'd say that even if he had survived and defeated the vong he would only be doing so for his own benefit in other words he would save the galaxy to secure his own power. Still i do agree that he could have prevented so many people from dying in the yuuzhan vong war. However palpatine had plans to conquer other galaxies and who knows how many people in those other galaxies would die in that conquest.

How is it living under a fucking anarchy rebel regime or corrupt monarchy? Literally you're either be poor as fucking dirt and live in cave or you'll be smuggling stuff, do ancap kinda shit or join to the "rebel army" and fight against order holding galactic empire. Or join to one of countless gangs that kinda just rule on uncontrolled by Empire planets. Unified militaristic Galactic Empire provides it's people with stability and protection, with prospects of better future in comparision to what they had (stagnation).

More importantly than them being not very effective against the Vong, the Jedi, despite their claims of peacefulness, were very much interventionist when a government not to their liking ruled the Galaxy, and even took over the remains of the Republic for about a millenium following the first New Sith War. THEY would intervene with lightsabers the moment a Jedi Grandmaster decided that the Star Destroyers / Death Star was too much. They HAD to be removed to conserve the military machine through the years until the possible Vong invasion. ANOTHER rarely seen, but powerful force, the Caamasi, have also been a shadow player inside the Republic, responsible for toppling down the chancellors they didn't like (in fact, it was the Caamasi-Jedi coup that toppled the Pius Dea regime after its final expansion). It's no wonder that the creation of the Empire necessitated the destruction of the Jedi and the crippling of Caamas for Palpatine.

Palpatine couldn't have cared less for the people of the Galaxy. He would happily let the Vong massacre the outer rim if he thought it would increase his power. He's a Sith his literal only goal in life is increasing his power. People who think the Sith and Empire did no wrong are the embodiment of you missed the point by admiring them.

It was actually Jedi Master Luke Skywalker that had remarked "Had the Republic still had the "Galaxy Gun" they would have stood a better chance battling the Vong". The Galaxy Gun (Warning: These are from SW Legends and NON canocal). The Galaxy Gun basically was an immense hyperspace capable mobile gun platform that was able to launch a very special type of Proton Torpedo that could bypass the limits of hyperspace. (Perhaps early sub hyperspace research) to send the torpedo to any planet in the SW galaxy in a matter of minutes to perhaps a few hours and decimate the planet or even star with a warhead powerful enough to "shift" the planet or stars material into the quantum realm. A truly nasty bit of engineering. Later we saw a perhaps canocal version of this gun in The Force Awakens that sent a beam of energy (not a torpedo) to planets possibly thousands of light years away and destroy them. Starkiller Base would have also been an incredible weapon against the Vong. And we werent told if the base could achieve hyperspace itself.
@deathstrike
@deathstrike Год назад
Edit: So basically if the SW Galaxy didn't have Palpatine's research and scientists like Galen Erso (before betrayal) they would have not only lost to the Vong, but also been blasted back to their pre hyperspace times.

Bane created the version of the Sith order which allowed Palpatine to achieve his goals so he is just as instrumental in saving the galaxy from the Vong. To be honest that's actually a good question is Palpatine evil or corrupted and did he himself view himself as evil or believed he was actually protecting the natural order of things, and I think that's actually a huge mistake people make, when judging Palpatine's character but in my opinion Palpatine actually does have some good in him, there are times when he shows general concerns or even traces of possessiveness and it would actually make sense, because darkness feeds on fear and grudges, and for that to occurre Palpatine must had sincerely believed that Jedi were in the wrong, felt betrayed and afraid, and he would not have felt that if he was fully evil and agent of darkness. I believe if Palpatine would be fully evil he would not care about being in charge and controlling people but rather he truly believed that only through total control and forceful guidance of the strong the weak can enjoy peace and prosperity and for that reason he wanted to establish the society that ruthlessly enforced the laws favoring the strong that were capable to lead over the weak that were to be lead.

Personally, I’ve always viewed Palpatine as an anti-hero. Also Lucas confirmed he thought he was in the right. “One of the issues in all of this, is that the bad guys think they're good, and Lord Sidious thinks he's bringing peace to the galaxy, because there's so much corruption and confusion and chaos going on, and that now he's going to be able to straighten everything out, which may be true, but the price the galaxy's going to have to pay for it is way too much.” __ George Lucas__ Revenge of the Sith Commentary

It's just what I tell since many years. 😂😂😂 Finally someone who helped my Argumentation. 😁👌 Thanks a lot! Ahh including the jedi thing. They would have been a constant threat to him, because Jedi hate Sith their existence. (Because they are extremely dangerous indeed). They wouldn't send him to court, even if he did literally nothing wrong. But the potential danger would be enough to simply kill him. 🤷 Also, with him, being a Sith, he is in the historic duty to take revenge against the Jedi because of the Holocaust they did against the Sith thousands of years ago. 🤷 They also have the prophecy of one that brings back the balance. But balance isn't 10 thousand against two. 🧐 So... Some guys must simply go and since thousands of years, the Jedi where pretty lame at their own chosen job. 🤔 I mean.. just ask Qui Gon or Count Doku, how well Jedi are choosing to solve problems and help people who need them. 💁🏻 I haven't seen a Jedi running a bakery. But they are well feed and own hundreds of giant temples. Weird if they just own clothes and sword. 🤔 But check out the galaxy map and ask your self, why it isn't hard to find slavery not only outside of the galaxy. ☺️

There are a few holes in this theory, the biggest one being there was no such thing as the Yuuzhan Vong when the original trilogy was written. Also if we go by this logic, something could be written later that says the star wars galaxy eventually causes the destruction of the entire universe and the Vong where the good guys for trying to destroy it.

Our beloved Emperor , Sheeve Palpatine knew that he was a superior being and that the lesser....... inferior beings of the galaxy wanted and needed him to rule them. They were intellectually incapable of running their own lives , and would have been slaughtered when the Vong arrived. So he selflessly put his own needle aside and was there for them , until a traitorous terrorist killed him .

Yeah, no. One of the VERY FEW good things Disney did was wipe this shit off the canon. Palpatine's entire character is ruined the moment you start making him even slightly sympathetic. He is pure evil and all his motivations orbit around expanding his own power by any means necessary. And that's okay for the story that Star Wars was telling. It needed a villain like Palpatine for it to work, someone who wholly embodies both the tyrannical Galactic Empire and the Dark Side of the Force in himself so that his death can signify the ultimate victory over both for our protagonists. As well as Vader's own redemption by being the one to do it. This is not Game of Thrones, there's no moral ambiguity here.
@MCLegend13

Not the point he definitely wouldn’t have been good infact had he still been in power and the Vong invade he would likely use the full power of the Empire to defeat them. And once that is done he would start preparing for his own conquest of other galaxies with an eventual goal of conquering the entire universe. Don’t even think for a moment that it would have made him good if anything it would allow for the citizens of the galaxy to follow his rule even more blindly than before he would use the Vong invasion to further increase his own power. Also I completely disagree Disney did Palpatine far far worse than anything in this video and in the old expanded universe. It’s all far more interesting than “some how palpatine returned” that’s how you truly butcher a character the not this. This is how you expand a character in a interesting way.
